- It’s only the group stage opener. You can’t win or lose a tournament in the first game.
- The 1st half resilience was amazing! We saw the future (Baturina) shine with his goal from outside the box.
- Seeing a true #9 score for us (Musa) is what we need for the next 2 games versus Panama and Ghana.
- Livaković MOTM for me! Yes, he let in four but he also saves four English opportunities including a retaken penalty. Could have easily been 6-7.
- Modrić had a bad game and a silly foul that led to a penalty. Jebiga. The boys will bounce back vs. Panama in Toronto.

45′ – GOOOOOOOOOOOALLLL!!!! 2-2 Croatia right at the death for halftime! Mario Pašalić chips the ball into the box and Perišić sends a light flick towards Musa. The hometown boys who plays for FC Dallas unloads with the shot to beat Pickford low. In the first half of the World Cup, Croatia has goals from the future (Baturina) and a true #9 in Musa. The fact that we have offense cooking against England is FANTASTIC! Croatia are unlucky to concede twice by millimeters. Livaković’s foot was barely off the line on his first Kane penalty save. The corner kick that led to England’s second goal hit the corner black and went the wrong way. Right now, Dalić and the boys have to be happy in the locker room after two unlucky bounces and an amateur foul by Modrić in the box. GAME ON IN TEXAS!!!
42′ – GOAL. 2-1 England. The ball hits the corner flag and crawls out for a corner. Kane is left wide open and unmarked in the middle of the box for an uncontested header. The momentum shifts back to England after Baturina’s goal.
36′ – GOOOOOOOOALLLL!!!!! 1-1! Petar Sučić dances in the box and makes an English defender miss on the slide tackle. He passes it off to Baturina at the top of the box who slams it upper-V past Pickford! It’s all level in Dallas!
12′ – GOAL. 1-0 England. Modrić with a clumsy foul in the box. Kane steps up to the spot and Livaković makes the save! After VAR, Livaković’s foot was one millimeter off the line. England given a retake. Kane steps up and goes the same way to beet Livi.
1′ – KICKOFF!
Dalic had the team try to compete with England all over the pitch. This was impressive as we don’t usually play high intensity dynamic football across the pitch. It’s never been our strength. We’ve always been a counter attacking team who defend quite deep and then keep possession if the counter isn’t on. We have also struggled with creating chances other than crosses. So Dalić really tried to push our level up to match the big teams. That was impressive and but for the sloppiness might have hit us a result. England’s first three goals were all gifts caused by individual lapses in concentration. The lineup was fine. The tactics were bold. England were extremely well drilled to move the ball quickly and intelligently and execute on their chances. It was pleasing to see us press high up the pitch and score beautiful goals. We were very brave to take on England in that style. However, I believe in order to be successful you have to play to your strengths. Especially against England who find it difficult to know what to do when we just keep ball in the middle of the pitch. We never sat in a low block through the game. Which is also something England struggle to break down. So Dalić started the World Cup by going toe to toe with one of the favourites. That shows belief and confidence. In the end we couldn’t keep up. Not a surprise. We just need the right balance between that new dynamic game and our more traditional game, some of the players to get fully fit, modric to not have a stinker and I think we can still beat teams and progress forward. Don’t forget we beat Colombia with our B team. The game with Brazil we should have tied. We put 5 past Czech. We are absolutely capable of having a good tournament. We lost to England, big deal. The boys are working as we speak 🙏🏻❤️

Its safe to say we fell off, we are no where near the team we was, we had a chance to prove we are not punching above our weight but let’s be honest, if u watch that game again from start to finish it could have ended 7-2, we are no where near the level of England, absolutely no where near, time to start rebuilding, get rid of all the old guys and inject the youth, rebuilding phase 1.0

All this optimism about Gvardiol but you’re going to be disappointed. The old Gvardiol (from Qatar 2022) is never coming back. Pep changed him and he’s not the tiger he used to be. Dalic doesn’t have the skill to bring him back.
I thought Vuskovic did okay. He’s pushing forward and trying to create something while also defending. He’ll get better.
I’m not as impressed as you all seem to be of Petar Sucic. In my opinion, he’s too easily pushed off the ball and has no physical presence. I’ve seen him pushed off the ball many times at Inter and he was pushed off last night too. Wimpy. Baturina fights.
Dalic too dumb to put someone on Kane 24/7 for the match. That should have been Stanisic’s job as he knows Kane very well. Every time Kane is receiving the ball he should’ve been pressured. Instead he gets to roam wherever he wants to score and setup goals with minimal pressure. If you take Kane out of the game, England becomes mediocre.
Croatia played with the intensity of a friendly. England is coming to bash your face in! Match their intensity! Especially in defence. Good pressing in the first 5 minutes of the game but that’s it.
And ffs, when are you going to realize that the refs are against you? Every game. So be extra careful in your 18 yard box. Any slight infraction will be a penalty shot.
The Panama game will be the true litmus test to see if there is any juice left to squeeze out of the 40 yr old Luka lemon 🍋

The physicality of Panama will be an issue but modric is wise enough to use that against them one would think?
Many times Modric was running back to cover for Gvardiol running too close attacking and letting his mark counter. I didn’t see anyone else picking up for Gvardiol.

Also, the retake of the pen. is complete garbage. The whole point of doing stutter step penalty is to draw the goalkeeper into committing before you kick it. It’s a cheap trick and should be outlawed.
The game plan was solid, the execution of the plan was not. If the defence can tighten up we might actually do something.

It was an embarrassment to the game. Ghana hardly won and Panama are dirty. Panama had more chances too. I will say they are fast. We need our youth to start to keep up.

Scoring wins games but defense always keeps you in games. If your team can defend, you will always have a chance to get a result. Just look at what happened with Switzerland and Qatar. Three defenders at the back works only when you have three strong, quick defenders, that are very reliable defensively. We scored 2 great goals but gifted England 2 first half goals with a rotten (retake) penalty kick and even more rotten defending on a corner kick. We have been giving up bad first half goals lately. Croatia can not keep putting themselves in a hole every game because you can not battle back every game especially against good teams. How do you leave Harry Kane, their best header of the ball, completely free on a corner kick. The defending on set plays was horrible throughout the game. The second half was tough to watch as we just did not come out with the same intensity and let England dictate play.

Dalic had a terrible day, modric and Dalic blame for today’s result. Everyone comments on modric isn’t harsh enough. Guy was terrible and should be a man and bench himself rest of tournament. Not a single person is above the jersey including modric he was awful he can’t play at the level anymore.

That was a heart pounding game and I expected a draw and we were playing for it. It was such an odd game and only a couple takeaways that are positive in my eyes.
1.Pressure upfront. We kept pushing England’s defence and Pickford when he had the ball. Musa, Baturina and Sucic were all over them and it worked. The pressure went away of course after that 3 England goal. Our offence is what I was worried about and we managed to put two past a team that didn’t concede once in qualifying.
2.Our midfield still look a bit above average. We pressured and contained England’s midfield. All the goals were from outside.
3. Livakovic the saviour. Had it not been for him, it was turning into a slaughter. Subasic saved us numerous times in Russia and did it while injured too.
Negatives…lots
1.Defence and coverage. Gvardiol, Vuksovic and Šutalo (Shitalo) all played horrible. Not one impressive takeaway from any of them. Stanišić playing on the wing is what helped us. I was under the impression our defence would be better with our youth, my oh my I was wrong. We looked so sluggish. Allowing 11 shots on target is laughable. We were lucky it was 4-2 and even tied two times with getting pounded by shots.
2.Modric and his time. It’s time to let the cleats and headband hang. He is out of fuel. Kovacic should’ve started over him. Modrić allowed us to concede first with that careless foul. Once again we conceded first and that’s what we always do. He looked so slow and can’t keep up.
3.Corners. Every corner England had which was 8-2 against us, I cannot look and had to shut my eyes. That Kane goal was too easy. Why isn’t the best player covered? Absolutely unreal how many corners they had and every one was dangerous.
4.Croatian clawing back. Once again we concede first and when you chase games it will never end well and catch up. Playing catch up is what Croatia does. We didn’t against Denmark, Russia, England and France in 2018 conceding first and only leading once in those four games.
I’m watching this joke of a Panama and Ghana game. One shot one target in 45 minutes? England would slam these teams and if they don’t put more than 4 against either, it will make us look like a joke.

Corners conceded and coverage: Too many allowed and that Kane goal to go up was too quick after tying it. The third goal was also not angle to cut off the England winger. Once again it was Liva’s fault.

Positives and negatives for sure, mostly negatives. My biggest takeaway is that 5 at the back just isn’t for us.
Overall, conceding 4 in our first game overshadows everything . Defence wins these types of 7-game tournaments and, without Liva, they’re putting 7 past us today. Really poor stuff.

Not much positive for me. England is not that good, and Croatia made them look like elite Brazil. When was the last time England had that much offence in a major tournament? I can’t even remember. Not expecting much this tournament. Looking like the transitional years of 2000-2006. They qualify for major tournaments, but don’t do much. Expect to see that in this tournament, and maybe 2028. Will be hard to replace Modric and Perisic.

I’ve been complaining for years about Dalic choice in players.
Modric is to old and it was time insert the youth 4 years and having the vets as subs.
Terrible tactics, choice in formation, playing players out position, and player choices.
We have young speedy players but he won’t play them.

Modrić had a bad game, and our defense wasn’t great, especially when Kane was left completely unmarked. Hopefully, we will bounce back and destroy the next 2 opponents. Other than that early “loose” play, and that, he was fine (for me) …. there were lots of giveaways from both teams in the first 10 minutes. These teams play so infrequently together that the quality almost always pales in comparison to “club” games.

We gave up more shots than an NHL gets in one night- that was a 7-2 game at a minimum- play every kid and win or lose – let’s move on from the dinosaurs – Dalic showed no coaching or strategy

What I can’t respect is the other Luka. He just looked scared and his touches did not exude confidence at all. He is 19 , first World Cup match and against England . I understand . But he looked like a pale imitation of himself when playing with Hamburg . Not a good sign IMO

Post match with Harry Kane – He said during the second half team talk the manager told them they don’t care if England lose at least we lose playing our own way. That fired them up during the second half to score. He did give Croatia credit for having good players.

I don’t know what I’d say to them. I don’t know them.
But:
The first three goals conceded were gifts. Modric mistake won’t happen again. Defending set pieces has to be improved. Gvardiol is not yet fit. Perisic at left wing back gives gvardiol too much to do. I’d go to back 4 from now. Stanisic didn’t suit right wing back either. Petar sucic did ok. He had a big job to do pressing and tracking Reilly. That’s why Dalić put him there. And he still set up the goal for baturina. But he has been perfect in the double pivot with Luka. I would return that. The pressing was good from the team and the collective energy was the right level. Baturina and Luka vuskovic proved they are ready. Which is huge positive. The goals we scored were absolutely brilliant. So ever all there are some big big positives to take. Just a bit more fitness, a bit more focus and maybe a return to a back four and I think we will come good at this tournament. The players know it. They were relaxed and determined at the end of the game. That tells you everything. We be fine

These comments are so negative, ignoring the fact that Croatia is finally attacking the goal again instead of killing the game for the first time since 2018, with Modrić being the least effective player out there. England played a great match, truly a great match. Bellingham’s goal was a perfectly placed shot with Mario P on top of him (not fast enough but still there applying pressure) and Livaković in front. Rashford’s 1-on-1 was also amazing. Give England credit, they played very, very well. Give Dalić credit too—a team that has struggled to score goals against strong competition since 2018 just scored 2 and came close to tying the match at 3 with what the announcers I have were calling a “young lineup”. Baturina, Musa, Matanović, Sučić, Marco Pašalić, Vušković… These are the in-form guys and they made this an exciting and respectable game. No shame in losing while going for the win. If Croatia wins the next 2 and moves on, maybe they go deep. It is possible with tonight’s attitude.

Dalic chose the squad, every time we see a video clip of the training sessions or something about the camp, hotel, food, small celebrations for a Birthday or some team gathering for recognition…its always positive and heart warming. No drama, no scandals, no embarrassments…just a family of players supported by millions of Croatians that know what it means to be one of us!
