Dinamo vs Osijek (2-0)
Dinamo and Osijek both fought hard for points on Saturday’s season opener at Osijek’s Opus Arena, with Dinamo pulling through in the later minutes of the match with Kulenović and Stojković scoring two late goals in the last 15 minutes of the match. Both Dinamo and Osijek are looking for rebound seasons, after Dinamo slipped up on last seasons HNL trophy for the first time since 2017. Dinamo has taken the message seriously by hitting the transfer market and fielding a brand new squad that fielded an entirely new back four, with Scottish veteran and Premier League player Scott McKenna featuring in Dinamo’s back four. Notably, a new talent, Moris Valinčić, from Istra had a huge impact in the game grabbing himself and assist, while linking up again with winger Mateo Lisica who also joined Dinamo from Istra this summer, creating a lethal attacking duo on Dinamo’s right side. While Osijek still remained stunned after missing out on a European spot for the first time since 2016, this seasons opener wasn’t much of an improvement for an Osijek side that has a giant question mark next to their name. The only major positive note for an Osijek side that missed out on the few chances they did have this match were that new signings, Stanislav Shopov from CSKA Sofia and former Newcastle United U-21 prospect Yannick Toure did perform relatively well. Osijek still enters the season with five of its starters from last year injured, hindering a team that has historically been very hit or miss in HNL campaigns. Dinamo found the back of the net off two low crosses first in the 78th minute that was tapped in by Kulenović and another in the 85th minute scored by Stojković. Dinamo’s revamped squad passed its first test this season at Osijek, and will head into what should be a layup match against newly promoted Vukovar, while Osijek continues its opening season gauntlet facing Dinamo, Rijeka, Varaždin, and Hajduk, by hosting Rijeka next Saturday.
Hajduk vs Istra (2-1)
Hajduk and Istra went back and forth in a thrilling match at Poljud that opened bizarrely with the stadium losing power, delaying the match. After the match got started, most of the first half remained quiet until Hajduk earned a penalty after an Istra player tripped Benrahou in the box. Benrahou stepped up and netted the pen, giving Hajduk the lead going into the break. However, the lead wouldn’t last long with Istra capitalizing and shocking Hajduk just three minutes into the second half after Hajduk made a completely unforced error passing into pressure in their own box allowing Istra’s striker Prevljak to poach the ball and score an equalizer for Istra. Istra was able to hold off Hajduk’s pressure following the goal for most of the second half, until Hajduk found the back of the net in the 85th minute off a header scored by Fran Karačić. Hajduk’s last minute winner allows them start the season perfect at Poljud and hopefully allow the club to continue its goals of pushing for a HNL trophy, one that has been just barely out of reach in the past two seasons.
Rijeka vs Slaven (2-0)
Rijeka snuck out a 2-0 win at home to open their season after last years historic title winning season, dethroning Dinamo Zagreb for the first time in 8 years when their 2017 team completed the same impressive feat. Despite Rijeka’s shaky start Rijeka squeaked out the victory in stoppage time thanks to super sub Šimun Butić’s goal and assist in the 90+3rd and 90+6th minute of the match. Slaven’s defense nearly held off last seasons champions thanks to a stellar performance from their keeper Osman Hadžikić who recorded 6 saves on the night and kept his team in the match until the very end. Rijeka’s bench came through in the match with Ante Matej Jurić coming off the bench and scoring the other goal of the match. Rijeka found their first goal off a corner that was deflected towards the diving head of Butić who’s goal set the Rujevica crowd back to life, then Butić finished off Slaven by firing a cross past Slaven’s last defender and right towards Ante Matej Jurić who volleyed it home for Rijeka to complete the 2-0 victory. Despite defeat, Slaven’s performance still showcased their ability to play their effective defensive minded football that kept them within the hunt for a European spot until the last day of the season. Rijeka will travel to Osijek to face their first major challenge in their road to winning their first back to back HNL title.

Rijeka is gonna lose to Shelbourne? Sigh
This always happens to our teams. They do incredible in HNL, the minute they are in Europe it all fizzles away, it’s frustrating. I don’t even care this point which one between Hajduk, Rijeka, Dinamo, Varaždin, Istra gets through I just want one of them to at least win a single trophy in Europe. It would be nice to claim at least one, even if it’s the Continental League at this point.
The problem is a lot of these clubs get way to much preference in these tournaments, and have so many teams from their league in this tournaments so it stacks the odds against. Our teams would almost have to have a miracle run to win a trophy. We only ever have 1 team in a tournament at a time, I just can’t see how it’s possible with these odds, and when the system is skewed.
Looks like Ivanović is selected to play this qualifying round match in Champions League for Benfica. Against Nice.
Looks like their intent was definitely to play him.
I don’t want to jinx anything. However, in my view Ivanović really seems like that player who has a great pace with ball at his feet. He has great ball retention and is able to finish. I know the game against Gibraltar was not against tough opposition but I really liked what I saw from him.
I really hope you had a great season with Benfica.
Ivanović has his first Champions League goal with Benfica!!! Someone tell me if they are watching I am literally looking at the stats online.
How is he playing?
Good movement on the goal:

Better news is that Pavlidis was the worst player on the field.
Hopefully this means Franjo is the star striker moving forward.
That’s good news for us and for Franjo.
Vuskovic
There has been some uproar by Sp*rs fans about “news” they are looking to loan him
If you search social media – X – there is NOT ONE FAN who wants to see him go on loan – NOT ONE FAN – the only ones that reluctant accept the “news” say “it’s good for his development blah blah blah” – this is lazy and generic – it’s not all the other players Spurs send on loan to 2nd / 3rd / 4th divisions come back and end up in Spurs 1st team division (or another 1st division league/team) – 99% of the time once you’re loaned out to lower leagues – you stay there or drop further – yes there are exceptions (like Harry Kane) – but those are outliers
Question: if Spurs are adamant on loaning him – why doesn’t he go back to Hajduk for the season? Could they use him after Prpic and J-League left? Isn’t this the best solution for the Croatia NT???
Should be another competitive season. Rijeka keeping Fruk was massive, and both Hajduk and Dinamo made some huge signings.
I’ll never understand why Kulenovic isn’t a guaranteed starter at Dinamo. One of the most effective attackers in the league.
He’s not perfect, but he’s just so underappreciated.
The weird thing is that Beljo is a similar caliber of forward…yet Dinamo went and broke a transfer record on him.
Beljo’s biggest weakness is that he’s not an efficient striker (requiring a lot of chances to finish). Whereas Kulenović seems to be the opposite. He puts away goals with far fewer chances.
I’m pessimistic but I hope Beljo ends up becoming the next Mandžo.
I do like the fact that if we’re going to pursue talent from foreign leagues, that they end up being Croats (which many were).
I think Boban made a lot of smart prudent moves in the transfer market, however the Beljo transfer was somewhat of a gamble because of the price-tag. If he becomes the next Mandzo, then Boban will be seen as a genius. If he’s a bust, Zvone’s honeymoon is over. I think it was a good move, but only time will tell.
I like most of his moves.
We’ll see how things play out, but I’m only really worried about Dinamo deprioritizing the guys who were already on the team (like Stojković) who are better than many of the new arrivals.

Ponosan! 🇭🇷💪🏻
Truly incredible this nation, 30 years since Oluja. And next year— 30 years after we debuted at a major football tournament, I hope we’ll be at the WC again!
Correctamundo.
Anyone here who is not proud to see the spectacle of these two concerts is either a Serb/Yugo…
or they are just too sterile from being Westernized too much to understand (which can be forgiven, and they should take some time to learn more about Cro, including some songs).
Spot ON Maminjo
Well said. I’m so proud to see all of the young people celebrating at Thompson concerts, and also marching in the military parade. It looks like the new generation are proudly embracing our history and honoring our heroes.
Who said Croatia has no wingers, to me the story of week 1 was young talented wingers. Going to be interesting to see there progress
Krivak from lokomotiva
Butic from Rijeka
Lisica from dinamo
With the recent oluja anniversary and another national shame of a thompson concert, it’s time to reflect on how the powerful use patriotism to richen their pockets.
Tudjman and his 200 families, one of which was the kvartucs, sold the dream of Croatian patriotism to the masses so that they could break toward independence through the blood and hardship of the people which would then allow the wealthy and powerful to pillage the state of Croatia in the privatization process.
Go to the big places in Croatia like dubrovnik in the summer or zagreb in the winter and run in some the circles I do and you constantly run into these people who you know how they got their wealth and you know they are riding the same game today of government corruption.
@The truth2 are you saying Ante Kvartuč is part of the Croatian chapter of the Illuminati?
Is Ante also a possible candidate for Epstein Island list, hence the cover up?
Now that you mention its quite weird that he controls the biggest Croatian diaspora sports website, hmmm.
Interesting!
Truth you’re such a beta loser. You’d love to see Croatia in the current state of France, Germany, UK,, etc. You’re a globalist pig. God forbid 🇭🇷 protects their unique culture
@John
I’m thinking that The Truth might also be on the infamous Epstein Island list with rainbow armband on full display.
Just a hunch.
Not enough for Turkey to get Fene bench Croatia #1 keeper
Now they getting Gala to buy Stanisic to bench him
And getting Besiktas to loan Vuskovic to bench him too
How doesn’t everyone see what’s happening ?
Nasty nasty Turks.
That’s 6 out of Croatia starting 11 taken out (by Turkey, England, Brazil, Portugal) and they summer transfer window still open….

With Vuskovic, a long line of clubs have been interested in loaning him, but with some looking for an option to buy which Spurs flat out refused. That has left five clubs circling the Croatian for a straight loan, including Hamburg who have a long-standing interest in the teenage centre-back.

Fingers crossed he gets loaned to another PL club
Bournemouth under Iraola would be perfect (they just sold 20yo CB Huijsen to Madrid for 57.5m, 22yo CB Zabarnyi to PSG for 70m (coming) and 21yo LB Kerkez to Liverpool for 45m)
If Luka gets loaned to a 2nd division Championship side – god help us
Idea: do you think HNS/Dalic can convince Thompson to throw a pop-up concert outside Tottenham Stadium with 500,000 Croatians showing up – and the concert keeps going until Levy agrees to start Luka every game?
How did Vrbančić play for Osijek?
I only caught the last 20 min of the game and didn’t really notice him on the field, but he seems to be rated as Osijek’s best player that game.
Vrbančić and Jagušić are our next big central midfield prospects (behind Baturina, Stojković, and the Sučić cousins) so we need to track their progress closely. They had great seasons last year for a couple of teenagers.
I think Vrbančić is being penalized because he’s a redhead
Can’t say I’ve ever seen another Croat guy completely ginger like him. Have you?
It’s weird and probably frowned up (potentially superstitiously like left-handed people or at a minimum subconsciously)
Doesn’t help that he has a full beard, which is also ginger
If he wants to get rid of the distraction and improve his career prospects – he should immediately colour both his hair and beard to another colour
A couple of more midfield prospects to maybe track . . .
Might be worth keeping one eye on Patrice Covic and watch how his season unfolds at Werder Bremen. He played the full game in a friendly against Hoffenheim a few days ago…
After a disappointing season in the Austrian league, Lovro Zvonarek looks to bounce back in the Swiss league where he is now on loan to Grasshopper. He played well in a recent friendly, and maybe he turns things around this season.
Back in the 90s, Patrice’s dad played for our U21 team and was once considered a good prospect (playing well for Stuttgart when he was only 20-ish years old). But then his career didn’t take off.
Patrice is very young and hopefully his dad helps him realize his potential (something he couldn’t do himself).
Even though he’s born and raised in Germany, I’m sure the kid has no choice other than to play for us, lol.
Vrbancic had a good game. When he was subbed in the 70th minute Osijek midfield fell apart.
Ok that would explain why I didn’t notice him on the field.
I think I tuned in around that time, not too long before Kulenović scored making Beljo look like Kanga.
Hajduk plays Dinamo City from Albania in the 3rd round of qualifying for the Conference League with the first leg on Thursday at Poljud.
If they can eliminate the Albanians ? Hajduk is favorite but you never know with Hajduk? they have been awful for a long time in Europe, even losing to teams from Malta.
They were fortunate yesterday with the Playoff draw and will face the winner from Silkeborg (Denmark) and Jagiellonia (Poland).
On paper this was the easiest draw? still a tough ask, however they avoided teams like Fiorentina and Besiktas and this was probably the draw they were wishing for. As a lifelong fan I hope that we can finally reach the group stage/league format of a UEFA comp and improve our club and national coefficient.
As far as HNL is concerned, to have any chance competing against Dinamo and Rijeka we need more depth in the squad. Happy to see Ivusic in goal and Fran Karacic is also a good right back. With Uremovic departing for Japan we need one or two quality CB’s. Hopefully up front Livaja and Rebic can produce the goods.
