HNL’s matchday 13 contests have been a bit of a snoozefest, unless you’re into great defensive displays. Every single team in the league had trouble finding the back of the net this week, however, they were all great at shutting down their opponents. A shout out to some of the goalkeepers this week is deserved as Ivan Čović, Marko Malenica, Zvonimir Šubarić, Dominik Kotarski, Ivan Lučić and Martin Zlomislić were fantastic and are part of the reason for their teams’ defensive success. Dominik Livaković continues his unimpressive streak as he records 0 saves and 1 high claim all match.
HNK Šibenik 1-1 NK Slaven Belupo
Relegation-fighting Slaven Belupo (who’s only victory all season came in matchday 1 against Dinamo) faced mid-table Šibenik on matchday 13. At the 10 minute mark, Jakoliš strikes an exciting ball from a difficult angle, but Ivan Čović makes a solid stop. Fast forward 7 minutes, a hot Antonio Marin shoots the ball straight into defensive midfielder Mario Marina’s hand. After a long 5 minute review, it is deemed a penalty kick, and Marin Jakoliš slots it in with style. A minute after the start of the second half, Jakoliš made his presence known yet again with a smart run and powerful shot, unfortunately aimed directly at the keeper’s gloves. Just two minutes later, it’s Arijan Brković’s turn to test the opposing keeper as he drives a curler from the corner of the box, but yet another save is made keeping this contest at 1-0. At the 68th, Šibenik’s captain, Mario Ćurić, receives a golden opportunity to double his side’s lead, but the ball is denied by the woodwork. At the 79th minute, Slaven got one of the most exciting chances of the game, threading a few passes resulting in a dribble and a shot, all in Šibenik’s box, but the kerfuffle results in nada for the Farmaceuti. And off the very next corner, a head connects with the ball, but another fantastic Lovre Rogić save denies Slaven once more. Three minutes later however, Slaven finally got their equalizer off an almost identical corner as the previous one, the score was now 1 to 1. The clock runs out and the two teams share the spoils at Stadion Šubićevac.
CroatianSports’ Man of the Match: Marin Jakoliš (1 goal, 3/4 long balls, 2 shots on target, hit woodwork once, 5/6 ground duels won)
NK Osijek 1-0 NK Hrvatski Dragovoljac
After a relatively quiet start to the match, Ramon Mierez gets the first chance of the game, hitting the ball with an outside swing resulting in little power. His scoring woes continue. At the 32nd, Mierez strikes the ball once again directly into Zvonimir Šubarić’s chest. At the 40th, Osijek had yet another opportunity to score with a decent Fiolić run, but he placed the ball wide and we found ourselves still at a deadlock. With seconds to spare until the halftime whistle, a nicely placed cross finds itself in the box and Osijek’s Mihret Topčagić rings the ball against the crossbar. Osijek continues to dominate but are unable to have much finishing product, until the 71st minute when Darko Nejašmić heads the corner down to the feet of Mihael Žaper, and he taps it in for the game-winning goal.
CroatianSports’ Man of the Match: Petar Bočkaj (3 tackles, 5/8 duels won, 99 touches, 7 key passes, 9/16 crosses, 2/2 dribbles)
HNK Hajduk Split 0-0 HNK Gorica
A crucial game for Hajduk as they look to finally break into the top 3 spots in the league, and their opponent is 6th place HNK Gorica. At the 9 minute mark, a well-directed cross finds itself on Marko Livaja’s head, who rings it against the post. At the 26th, Biuk creates an excellent turnover and feeds Livaja in the box, but young keeper Dominik Kotarski makes another solid stop. Only 3 minutes later, Vatreni legend Dario Melnjak has the chance of the game on a one-on-one versus Kotarski, but Hajduk are yet again denied. The match is a defensive masterclass from Hajduk, not even allowing a single shot on target, but their offensive engine has been slow. At the 90’+3, a low ball into the box finds Melnjak at exactly 5 feet from the goal, and he touches it over the net. A deadlock in Poljud is the final result and Hajduk are denied a spot in the top three for another week. A shoutout to Stipe Biuk for one of his best performances all season that unfortunately ended without his name on the scoresheet. The young winger finally looked lively and tracked back defensively. He had 6 tackles (the most out of any player throughout the match), 3 key passes, and 1 big chance created.
CroatianSports’ Man of the Match: Dominik Kotarski (5 saves inside the box, 3 high claims, 1 punch, 52 touches)
GNK Dinamo Zagreb 1-1 NK Istra 1961
Dinamo Zagreb is looking towards first place in the league with a win versus Istra, and the action starts just minutes into the match when 26 year old Komnen Andrić finds himself one-on-one with keeper Ivan Lučić, who stops it with the tip of his foot. At the 14th, Martin Baturina puts himself into a good position but heads the ball wide off a Sadegh Moharrami cross. Dinamo get their closest chance so far in the 24th when a beautiful corner from Marko Bulat is headed by Perić and finds itself on the goalline before Lucic secures it. Five minutes later, Baturina shows off his wicked shot and sends a bullet in from dozens of feet away, but once again is denied by the Austrian goalkeeper. At the 60th, Dinamo coach Damir Krznar makes a rather puzzling substitution as he subs out arguably his two best players of the match so far in Marko Bulat and Martin Baturina. The result? Istra took a 1-0 lead in Maksimir from 19 year old talent Dion Drena Beljo. The 6 foot 5 striker found himself in a good position off a Luka Marin through ball to sink it past Dominik Livaković, who will not record a single save in this contest. Beljo now has 7 G/A in 768 minutes (or 8.5 games) of play. And just when Istra thought they could escape matchday 13 with a shocking 3 points versus the reigning champions, Luka Ivanušec whips a cross into the box that finds 6 foot 6 center-back Dino Perić. And the 3rd match out of 4 so far ends in a draw.
CroatianSports’ Man of the Match: Ivan Lučić (8 saves, 4 inside the box, 2 high claims, 2/2 ground duels won)
NK Lokomotiva Zagreb 0-2 HNK Rijeka
Top of the table Rijeka visit Kranjčevičeva in their matchup against a renewed Lokomotiva squad, much stronger than the one from last season. For the first 45 minutes, both sides enjoyed opportunities in a relatively even matchup and it wasn’t until injury time before the end of the first half that Robert Murić, from a free kick, sent a wicked curler into the corner of the net. In the 58th, Rijeka faced two beautiful opportunities to score within the box, both miraculously saved by Dinamo loanee, Ivan Nevistić. Three minutes later, Lukas Kačavenda showed off his footwork and incredible pace in a great run by the entire Rijeka defence and midfield, but his shot fired over the bar. This proved rather unfortunate as Rijeka made Kačavenda pay for his missed chance, by putting the ball in the back of Nevistić’s net three minutes afterwards. At the 68th, Kačavenda looks to bounce back with a nice cross that finds his teammate’s head, but it is directed right at the keeper’s chest. Rijeka clinched another victory and remain top of the table after matchday 13.
CroatianSports’ Man of the Match: Lukas Kačavenda (85% pass accuracy, 3 key passes, 2/2 crosses, 2 shots, 3/3 dribbles, 6/9 ground duels won, 2 tackles)

It looks like index.hr is reading our comments here:
Što se događa s Nikolom Vlašićem? Nema ni minuta ni ulogu u novom klubu
https://www.index.hr/sport/clanak/sto-se-dogadja-s-nikolom-vlasicem-nema-ni-minuta-ni-ulogu-u-novom-klubu/2313523.aspx?index_ref=naslovnica_sport_prva_d
Slavonac should be the head writer of index
I personally like Vlasic
I like his direct attacking plays and his attitude and professionalism
He is a very good young man
Plus he is a dalmatinac
However yes he does disappear at times however I felt all the attackers were doing that at the euros
To blame it on rebic was unfair and the collective attacking group as a whole need to find combinations real fast as the World Cup is approaching
@Suba
Lol! You’re so right he should. I believe that index.hr (if they do read comments here lol) only read @Slavonac from Canada’s comments.
I think rebic gets recalled after Dalic leaves the setup and when modric and perisic retires which will be at the end of the World Cup
The new coach will approach rebic to help rebuild this team after the World Cup and rebic will be hungry again leading front the front like olic used to
Rebic just needs to refocus and what work out that there is nothing more important than what playing for the repka
Hahah dalmatinci and Imocanis never apologies
If that’s what Dalic is waiting
Tell him he’s dreaming
Always forget that Joe Sakic is an Imocan….
Jakic is an Imocanin too.
Maybe he can go talk to him over a game of Sijavica.
as a Dinamo fan, I see things are shaky at the moment and I’m really hoping Rijeka, Osijek, Hajduk, Gorica, Lokomotiva….can all take advantage.
It soo unhealthy to see the same teams win it year in, year out. Sure, I love Dinamo but I also love all Croatian teams and want more competition at the top.
On another note. I saw that our league is struggling vs many smaller country’s in Europe and that makes me nervous. We really do need other teams to step up and help out in European competitions.
for our upcoming games:
Vratari: Livaković, Sluga, Grbić
Braniči: Stanišić, Juranović, Vida, Lovren, Ćaleta-Car, Gvardiol, Pongračić, Sosa, Barišić
Veznjaci: Modrić, Kovačić, Brozović, Pašalić, Jakić, Vlašić, Ivanušec
Napadači: Kramarić, Livaja, Perišić, Brekalo, Oršić
Pretpozivi: Lovre Kalinić, Škorić, Uremović, Čolak, Lovrić, Moro
I really do wish Rebic would extend the olive branch and make an apology to Dalic for the greater good of our team.
Meh, Rebic wasn’t really lighting the world on fire the last time he saw the pitch for us. His form has been ok with Milan recently, but nothing in the way of ‘wow, he could be a game changer for us’ type of form.
I know he does some smal stuff that could help our the NT, but he needs to get out of his own way, squash the beef with Zlatko and start building toward a path back.
yes I agree but he was good at the WC in 2018. I think in this last tournament he felt Dalic has been making several poor decisions and that he was sacrificed and he wasn’t happy about it. Rebic can do well for us and I do think he’s better suited than Vlasic, Ivanusec, Brekalo or anyone else on that right side.
I would also like to see Rebic back in the lineup, but isn’t he injured?
I think he’s ready to and fit to play again. this weekend they said he’s “questionable” rather than “not fit to play”.
Rebic’s touch was horrendous at the Euros. He’s constantly fighting the ball, himself, his coach, you name it. Technically he’s our worst non defender if you ask me.
thats why I made a comment about Olic, yesterday. You’re 100% right but he has tools we need…and thats all dependant if he’s in form and mentally ready.
Rebic attacks non-stop. He’s very strong, very fast and constantly challenges defenders and this is where we lack. Far too often our wingers get shut down and won’t have the space or ability to make that explosive run…Rebic has that ability, Brekalo, Vlasic and Ivanusec don’t.
But the same can be said about Vlašić, can’t it? He has something no other player on our team has and that’s the ability to take a shot from far out and create at least 2 or 3 goal scoring chances per game with that. Now you may say he’s been bad lately or hasn’t proven anything but so is Rebić. He hasn’t done anything since 2018 and if we’re going to play him based on past accolades, we might as well start the exact XI from the World Cup final. You can’t keep slandering Vlašić based on his recent poor performances but say we need Rebić, when clearly he hasn’t been up to our standards for the NT. And don’t say he offers pressing and motivation when he hasn’t actually provided that for us in years, all he provides, really, is poor dribbling and tension within the squad. Until he apologizes with Dalić, who I do not support or necessarily like, but still respect since he is the coach, then Rebic won’t see the pitch. Simple as that.
“You can’t keep slandering Vlašić based on his recent poor performances but say we need Rebić”
Markus, Rebic is a direct player, Vlasic is not. Rebic will take you on outside….Vlasic doesn’t do that ever.
Vlasic is an opportunist and his strength is taking a crack anywhere within 25 yards out and from the width of the 18 yard box.
I see Vlasic as a player behind the striker but because we don’t have a striker and Krama probably ends up there, we put Vlasic on the wing and personally, I don’t see him being very effective there for us.
We’ve seen Rebic play the role and do it well…he’s done it very well at Milan also (until Giroud and Ibra got hurt and he had to play striker).
I find it strange you’d say I’m “slandering Vlasic”! He’s not really proven much to me and I’m open minded and waiting to see him put in a few good games in a row. I still haven’t seen that or even close to it.
I’m not defending Vlasic. I think he needs to be better. I’m simply putting into perspective how you criticize Vlasic but not Rebic even though he’s just as useless for us. Vlasic obviously can’t play on the wings and not once have I said he should, but giving Rebic credit for good club performances just doesn’t matter because we could do the same to Krama and we all know how he does with the checkers on. Sure, Rebic may take you on outside, but he still can’t run at full speed and keep the ball within 2 feet of him! First thing that comes to mind is that horrible breakaway chance he flunked against Denmark in 2018, lol.
ok, I understand what you see and I see it as well BUT, we’ve both seen Rebic make something out of nothing.
You know how I use the term “effective”? Years ago, Perisic was very ineffective and it took several games to see him perform 1 good game. He’s a talented player, very gifted physically and he’s very intelligent as well. Perisic found consistency at club and our National team.
Rebic can be as effective or close to as effective as Perisic…and thats the truth…I’ve seen it at Frankfurt, at the 2018 World Cup and at Milan. His issue is that he has a mental block. He had this issue before Kovac became his coach and then he snapped out of it…well, Dalic has caused many of us here to go bonkers, Rebic clearly said the team has been shit…so I think he has a hard time playing in Dalic’s system. Mandzo (a striker) is gone, Krama, Livaja, Budimir and everyone else we’ve tried do not attack the passes and crosses the way Mandzukic did. My guess is that Rebic is frustrated and can’t get past it but that doesn’t mean he isn’t doing well at his club. I watch him almost every game and even if he’s off…he usually create’s great chances at least 2-3 times per game.
Going to call it now, Rijeka won’t win the championship this year. Yes, they had a clean sheet vs. Loko this week, but that backline lets in wayyy too many goals. Drmic will most likely win the scoring title, but Dinamo and Osijek just have better backlines. From what I’ve seen so far this year, I think this season will finish similar to what we had last year, maybe with smaller margins between 1-2.
Dinamo
Osijek
Rijeka
Hajduk
Said it before, Pasalic needs to be a striker. He’s great at timing and headers. Knows how to place himself at the right place. Dalic is a fool not to use him as a forward. Fast, smart and unbelievable pace.
I dunno. Might be worth a try, but I’d rather not.
Strikers need to be good finishers with their feet, and Pasalic is below average as a finisher with his feet.
He’s great without the ball at his feet, where he’s good at getting into position to clean up the scraps.
He’s fine as an offensive-oriented central midfielder. Always does well for us there.
But whenever we play him on the wing or another position, he’s like a fish out of water.
He plays only in the central midfield for Atalanta too. They don’t experiment with in other roles either.
I’d stick with what works for him.
