HNL Week 17: Rudeš, Killer of Giants

Rudeš have recorded only two league victories this season; a 1-0 win over Istra and a recent 3-2 victory over Hajduk Split. Sunday’s match almost saw the add Dinamo to their kill list, if it wasn’t for Armin Hodžić‘s draw-salvaging goal in the 72nd minute.

Karlo Kamenar scored for Rudeš, who remain in last place in the Prva Liga. The 44th minute goal put Rudeš’ hopes through the stratosphere and they nearly pulled off the impossible.

Dinamo slummed it through the muck that barely passed as a pitch at Kranjčevićeva in search of an equalizer but were stunned time and again by Rudeš goalkeeper Josip Čondrić, who put a performance fit for a transfer from the tiny neighborhood club. He will also be pleased to have a heroic tale to endlessly bore his future grandchildren with.

Dinamo coach Dario Cvitanović has been facing pressure in lieu of recent performance and shifted the Modri’s tactics and lineup in order to bring the match level. His substitution of Armin Hodžić paid off, as the striker found the back of the net to tie the game.

Dani Olmo though he had brought his team from behind to win the match after his 75th minute goal, but the referee’s assistant saw it a different way and flagged the Spaniard for offside, a call which at second look, was very, very incorrect.

The calls usually go in favor of the Modri, but Dinamo faced the fate many of their opponents have felt over the years and settled for a draw against bottom-dwellers and giant killers, Rudeš.

Hajduk Split pulled off a point-saving draw of their own in the dying minutes at Poljud.

Alen Grgić put Osijek in the lead in the 38th minute but Hajduk dashed the hopes of Osijek with a 90th minute equalizer from Ahmed Said.

Rijeka was the only top-four team to find victory this weekend and they had to travel to Vinkovci to get it.

Rijeka put two goals on Cibalia, who in turn, scored one of their own. The three points for Rijeka put them in second place with 29, but only on goal differential, as Hajduk and Osijek also have 29 points. Dinamo remains on top with 41 points.

  • Russians don’t care for Serbs AT ALL.

    This is such a myth. They supplied Croats with weapons during the war. They are constantly interested in Croatian companies (Agrokor, INA) as they want influence in Croatia (since they already have unquestionable loyalty from everyone in Serbia). They just throw Serbia a bone once in a while, like not recognizing Kosovo (or something like that) to keep them happy, but they really don’t do anything for Serbia at all.

    Russian football fans are pretty supportive of our National team and they still haven’t forgotten that we helped them qualify for Euro 2008 when we knocked out England. There were no problems with them when we played them in qualifying and in our recent friendly (where we beat them in Russia).

    You’ve got Serbian flags literally everywhere in our most recent qualifier in Greece, yet nothing in Russia. Russians have a pan-Slavic mentality. They don’t take sides in conflicts between Slavic countries (unless they’re the ones in the conflict).

    I wouldn’t worry about anything. Serbia has no brother.

  • World Cup draw will be televised on Fox Sports 1 here in the States at 10:00 AM – also on Telemundo. 6PM Moscow (local time) hosted by Gary Lineker.

    Keep in mind that being drawn next to a group that Poland or Russia is in would likely mean we wouldn’t play them in the round of 16, but, more likely the team in Pot 2, who would be favored to finish first – that is, if we finish second in our group.

  • And to continue the rant, can i just emphasise, how fucking bad are anglo aussies at pronouncing foreign names? Is it the same in USA and Canada? Like i seriously can tell people 10 times how to say my name and they – it’s like their mouth can’t phonetically make the corresponding sounds, or they’re fucking retarded.

    I’ve had managers in the past literally give up and call me “The I-man” rather than learning to say my name, which is obviously offensive and if it happened today i would call it borderline harrassment. I don’t understand why anglos are so fucking hopeless at even bothering to put in effort to learn how to say someone’s name. Fucking lazy fuckos.

    I don’t really think this is a bad thing. I’m old now (36), and 20 years ago when i was applying for jobs, i used to be so terrified and downtrodden cos i have a very Croatian name which is hugely unusual here in Aus and no one can ever pronounce it.

    And you know how they have conducted tests with names like John Smith vs some ethnic name and have the resumes identical and yet the John Smith always gets picked? Well that’s how it used to be. I felt like it was garbage and even flirted with anglosizing my own name – as much as i hate the concept of doing that, of going from Ilija to, say, Elijah just to fit in.

    These days i feel it’s different, i actually feel it’s almost a POSITIVE to have ethnicity and a weird ethnic name. IMHO that’s a GOOD thing. I’d rather see positive discrimination than negative. That’s kinda what happened with her, you’re right Maminjo she got picked cos she’s unique and i am totally fine with that, good on her.

    P.S. as a matter of trivia i had a job interview today (kicked it in the dick btw, got the job for sure lel) but none of the interviewers were CAPABLE of pronouncing my name correctly, despite my slowly and clearly repeating it about five times.

    It can be truly shit to be minority ethnic at times and some of the shit that people post on here, such as about this poor woman just adds to that. Give her a fucking break. It’s not her fault who her parents are. She has lived in HRV and speaks the language, what more CAN she do to fit in? She’s done everything she can. She didn’t choose her name either. Give her a break. She’s made a big effort to be a Croat and deserves some kudos!
