Croatia head to Faro to face off against Gibraltar in their first game of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Behind the Czechs and Montenegrins by six points, Croatia have some catching up to do, and three points are an absolute necessity coming from this match. Kickoff is Friday June 6th at 2:45pm EST.
Zlatko Dalić is looking to qualify the Vatreni to their third World Cup under his tenure, in which back-to-back top three finishes have been achieved. With a somewhat new look to the National Team and the integration of youth absolutely key, how will Dalić approach this experimental match with Gibraltar? Below is my projected starting XI fielded by Dalić.
Under Zlatko Dalić, the integration of youth into the starting eleven has always been a slow process, with Baturina and the Sučić cousins being the most recent newcomers. 18 year old phenom, Luka Vušković, has just earned his first National Team call-up, but don’t expect him to start in his first game.
Goalkeeper: As long as Livaković is healthy, don’t expect any changes here. He is our best shot-stopper at the moment and nothing points to that changing.
Defense: With Borna Sosa greatly out of form and no other real options at the left flank, expect Joško Gvardiol to be covering at left-back for the time being. Yes, his best position is centre-back, but with great options like Šutalo, Vušković and Ćaleta-Car (yes, he is out of form with Lyon, but he’s been good with us lately), don’t expect the Manchester City star to be moving to the middle. I highly doubt Vušković will earn his first start tomorrow so the pair of Šutalo and DCC is to be expected. However, I would be heavily disappointed not to see some Luka minutes in defence over this international window. Stanišić is coming off strong seasons at Leverkusen and now Bayern and will likely be the starter at the right flank.
Midfield: Some reports hint at Modrić being rested tomorrow (as he should), but expect Dalić to likely start him (or at least give him a cap off the bench). Should he not start, I’d honestly expect Nikola Moro to start over Luka Sučić, as it seems Dalić views the latter as an advanced midfielder. The new Inter Milan midfielder, Petar Sučić, will likely start in lieu of Mateo Kovačić. Martin Baturina will take the attacking midfielder spot, and I’d love to see Toni Fruk minutes off the bench but it seems as though he is out for the match against Gibraltar with a knock.
Attack: Reports are also hinting at Ivan Perišić earning some rest against Gibraltar, but I’ll believe it when I see it. I’d love for Marco Pašalić to finally get a start as he’s been absolutely torching the MLS, and you can’t tell me Gibraltar is stronger than MLS competition. But knowing Dalić, I don’t think Kramarić sits, and unless Perišić is rested, we won’t be seeing Marco Pašalić in the starting lineup. After his world class production for Osasuna this season, Ante Budimir is our solidified number 9 and deserves to start every game going forward. I’d like some Ivanović minutes off the bench in the 60th-70th minute however.
Substitutes: The most deserving of minutes off the bench against Gibraltar are definitely Luka Sučić, Luka Vušković, Marco Pašalić and Franjo Ivanović. I’d like to see Fruk against the Czechs (if he is back from injury), but we will likely be seeing Mario Pašalić, Vlašić, Majer and Moro this window as well.
What are your predictions for this opening match of the qualifying campaign? We can expect Gibraltar to set a tight low-block, but Croatia’s sheer footballing quality should be more than enough to disrupt that. Hopefully Croatia can let loose offensively and put four or more past the European minnows.
Looks like Krama and Ivanović are coming in. He is prepping them.
First half Croatia is up 2-0 but if they were not so offensively clumsy it could have been way more. Perišić is driving things upfront as always.
Juranovic is an exceptional link with Perišić. I love the pairing there. Great choice by Dalic.
Majer looks in form to me. He had one chance to put one away, but his first touch was off on that one. It was a difficult timed pass though.
The accuracy of our shots seems to be an issue as well as timing our runs. Luka Sučić was offside quite a bit. Including a goal that he would have otherwise scored if he wasn’t offside.
Budimir is quite sloppy upfront today. He should have had one goal there but couldn’t seem to hold his composure. He should have had a penalty in one case, but the ref is being lenient on both sides. He isn’t calling much.
Mario Pašalić is always in the right place at the right time in order to put those chances away. As far as I am concerned he scored both of those goals, he just happened to shoot the ball of Budimir’s leg the second time.
Let’s what the second half brings.
Stanišić almost got a header in.
Dalic does not look happy. Lots of offensive errors. There have been plenty of passes from Perišić and noone seems to be there, this game could have easily been 5-0. Budimir looks sloppy today.
Majer looks pretty in form to me. Some interceptions, some nice sleek passes. He moves really well.
I dunno Croatia are having a difficult time timing some of their passes, 3rd time Luka Sučić has been offside.
Sorry I guess that second goal was off Budimir, should have been Pašalić’s goal really. It was his shot.
Offside. 2-0 still.
Goal check actually.
Luka Sučić is offside, could have been 3-0.
Budi should have had a penalty shot it looked like he was tripped but no call.
Perišić is indispensable. He is such an important player for us. Every goal assisted by him.
2 shots, 2 goals for Pašalić.
Pašalić being himself. Right place, right time.
2-0. Pašalić again.
Pašalić bags a header! Finally! 1-0
anyone have a free link to the game
I guess that Czech v Montenegro game at the same time as ours is critical too, hoping for a draw here no doubt.
Didn’t expect to get up at 4.45 am in the super cold and dark temps here in Aus to watch this but couldnt sleep anyway so here we are lol. Hope it’s worth it heh.
Thanks for the post Ante. Kramarić has been on the wing many times. Frankly I just don’t see him playing there anymore. He is a supporting striker, and that is that. He should be where Baturina is, in that lineup, or Luka Sučić should be where Baturina is with Krama resting for the Czech game or coming in as a sub.
We need a natural winger on the right. I cannot see Dalic sitting Perišić he did not call up enough wingers for this and that could backfire very easily if he chooses this formation. As far as I am concerned Marco Pašalić is the only other person that we he have to play on the wings who plays in that position naturally. Juranovic is also an option, in my view, who has been used by Celtic as a winger on occasion. Juranovic is fast and I think he should be considered there.
Otherwise slapping someone in the right wing position haphazardly, where they don’t naturally play, or even have that capacity to play, has not paid off for us in the past. That is on Dalic for not calling up and trying more players in those positions. We have way too many midfielders in my view, and too many defensive players. He could have called on less if just to have one additional winger on each side.
Given that Modrić is probably going to start, I don’t see where Baturina fits in the line up. This is especially the case given that Petar Sučić is beside Modrić in the example above. He would more likely be a substitute in that case. But we don’t know that Modrić is starting given what some of the articles are suggesting, like you mentioned above.
I also have no problem seeing Vusković start or at the very least sub in early. I want to see how he and Gvardiol pair together on the left. I think he will strengthen our back four, potentially back three, on the future.
Thanks for the post Markus I mean. I should read more carefully.

Ang* bought Vuskovic
New manager TBD
Dalic – YOU BETTER START VUSKOVIC TODAY – as Sp*rs will look at a Croatian international (consciously or at a minimum subconsciously) – you BETTER NOT F THIS UP
Also, Romero 95% leaving bc Ange out – TBD who new manager will want to bring in, etc
Complete chaos at Sp*rs
*differently
Ange just sacked
Ange wanted Vuskovic
New manager TBD
Dalic – you better f-ing start him today – to even give him the best chance of making Spurs 1st team in the preseason
Also, 95% Romero leaves bc Ange gone
Yooooo @Markus
Other than Luka Vuskovic, who from the croatian prospects would you like to see integrated into the team for WC 2026 !?
Any good wingers we should have playing with the team ?
We have some really exciting prospects in the much younger ages, but not many that will be ready for the next World Cup. Right now the priority should be determining if Vuskovic is ready to start and maybe testing out Marco Pasalic at the right wing? Baturina and the Sucic’s are making space for themselves in the squad which is great news. I think this is close to the team we’ll be going to the US with next summer to be honest. The best up and coming wingers I can think of are Soticek, Durdov, Stojkovic (can also play CAM) but I doubt any of them will take a big enough step in the next year. If one of Ivanovic, Matanovic, Beljo, Frigan can explode next season that would be great to have alongside an in-form Budimir. I’d love to see Fruk move to a top-5 league and maybe make a case to play more minutes by the time we get to the WC?? We will have to wait and see I guess.
Thanks brate 🙏
Anyone know our top up and coming prospects other than Luka Vuskovic ….
Who else should Dalic integrate into the team for a World Cup run !?
He needs to keep a close eye on all of our winger and forward prospects…
and not delay in calling any of them up when they’re in full form.
There are none in particular that he “definitely” should be calling up (like Vušković)…but we currently have Budimir without a true winger, and we have aging players who are given 90-minute games back to back to back.
If Ivanović gets a transfer and comes out hot this upcoming season… You call him up.
Same goes for Frigan, Stojković, Durdov, Beljo, etc. No delays. It’s not a big deal to give someone 15 min off the bench.
I think if Dalić plays Modrić, Krama, Budimir, Perišić all 90 minutes today against Gibraltar (while sitting younger guys like Sučić)…then Dalić is a lost cause.
Luka Vuskovic 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hoping Dalic will integrate Youth before the tournament starts
Other than DAZN and Fubo Sport, any sites in advance (that don’t have viruses/spyware) that anyone is aware of?
Drogon.tv
Would be nice to give Budimir a winger who can provide some service.
If the game is congested, then Marco Pasalic makes sense in this game.
Hopefully we get ahead by several goals in the first half, so we can rest some veterans prior to Monday’s big game against the Czech.
It’s important not to draw or lose that Monday game. It’s our home game against the Czechs, but we’re still in a funk.
We haven’t bounced back yet from the terrible form we displayed at Euro2024 and these recent Nations League games.
I wish we weren’t already playing the Czechs. This game has Scotland potential written all over it.
Brother didn’t you see Croatia destroy France on both sides of the ball if Croatia would have converted a penalty kick
Early in the first game Croatia would have advanced man
Why didn’t they advance?
They played a great first half in Split, but lost the next three halves.
We also played a great first half in the Poland game during Nations League… But ended up drawing that game too.
Since Euro 2024, we haven’t played a good full game yet…and have had many bad losses.
They lost in PKs to France…flip a coin. Was France better overall across the two games? Sure. But they were also expected to be.
You say three bad halves still Croatia was a PK stoppage from beating France after going down one in PK’S man remember this if Croatia plays like they did in split can you say final four in 26 man
Growing up and singing the Croatian National Anthem in the 70’s and 80’s here in America in my Croatian period group gave me a sense of national pride. And hearing the anthem at the ‘98 World Cup and the success we had was unbelievable. And now seeing what Mr. Dalic has done in the last 2 World Cups has brought even more sense of pride of being a Croatian. Coach Dalic hopefully is ready for this qualifying campaign. Viva Zlatko!
Not ‘period’, but ‘performing’
For the FIFA WC goal difference is important, if two teams end up with the same points, goal difference is the first parameter used to determine the winner of the qualifying group.
Chechia won 4 – 0 away to Gibraltar, so we need to match that and ideally win by a bigger margin.
We’ll start with our strongest line up and hopefully by half time be ahead a few goals? so that we can rest some of our seniors like Modric and Perisic in the second half.
can anyone tell me why croatias game monday with czechs is not listed in dazn canada thanks
Type Croatia in the search spot and it’s there. The DAZN website is a mess.
The logic in putting the veterans out as starters has to be to secure the win early to relieve some pressure, a bit like when we last played Cyprus. I would prefer to see Jakić paired with Petar Sučić for this match because Croatia should win this match with practically any midfield combination, and Jakić is a pure defensive midfielder who has been playing very well for Croatia and is also young enough to be on track to hit a peak next year. I would start Perišić and Budimir to get an early goal, but I would replace Kramarić with Luka Sučić or Marco Pašalić (and I am a Kramarić fan) for this match
