Day 15: Petar Musa
Season Grade: B-
National Team Grade: N/A
Benfica Grade: B
Season Highlight:
Game-tying, UCL goal against Inter Milan in the 90+5th minute of the match.
Two goals in two minutes off the bench against Portimonense in league play.
Team next season:
Musa will most likely spend another season in Portugal with Benfica. There have been lingering talks of the 25 year-old being eyed by Bayern Munich and Valencia, but those transfers are highly unlikely to go through.
What to improve next season:
Although he has proven to be at his best coming off the bench, Musa will definitely look to find a spot in Benfica’s starting lineup during the offseason. Musa is a terrific finisher, big body, and has a relentless work ethic. With only about one shot taken per match this season in Liga NOS, he could work to find himself in better, more productive scoring positions while he is on the pitch.
What the future holds:
Scoring 7 times and assisting twice in league play doesn’t seem like a fantastic stat line until you take into consideration that he averaged a goal per 97 minutes in Liga NOS. Musa also scored once every 65 minutes in Champions League action, with two goals in total. He is one strong season away (as a starter) from potentially landing a huge move to a top-5 league side. With Dion Drena Beljo flying through the pecking order, it will be interesting to see who Dalić selects as his starting striker once Kramarić and Livaja entirely filter out. Musa is a bench specialist, a type of player that any club could benefit from. As of now, his role with the Vatreni should be first man off the bench when the offense is struggling to produce.
I know most will say there will be no conflict in Croatia but Serbs are serbing

Hope Dinamo and Villarreal will come to an agreement soon.

I think the livakovic move to Spain will be ok
Definitely be a good challenge
Real, barca, atletico
Top teams to play against
Hoping he makes another step and somehow hits close to world team status:)
Ok, lets be realistic here. Petar Musa has kinda come outta nowhere in my opinion …but I do feel he’s got some very good tools in his bag. I’ve watched him play club soccer for the past two years, unfortunately this season he’s been getting fewer opportunities than last season
I’ll break it down here:
1115 minutes played in all competitions / 90 minutes (total minutes per game) = 12.4 total games played. in those 12.4 games, Musa has scored 11 goals total, in all competitions. Sure, this is a primitive way to break things down but the guy only get some scraps. Here’s a clear example of what I’m talking about.
Musa was on the bench for the first 2 games of the season and then he got 28 minutes in the 3rd game (and an assist), then 23 minutes, another 23 minutes, 65 minutes, bench all game, 20 minutes…and in his 9th game he came in at half time and scored…he then became very RELEVANT and key, scoring 7 goals (League Play) and getting some very few minutes….ie….between 2 and 15 minutes….thats called being RELEVANT and EFFECTIVE. scoring 7 goals while getting less than 15 minutes…WOW!!
The issue for Musa is that he’s behind a very good player Goncalo Ramos who scores 0.63 goals/game and his market value is at 40 million Euros.
Here’s what I feel we should compare. He’s been playing second option for this season and thats fine, he has to start somewhere…at least he’s in a league where the football is good quality and the competition is tough. with that said, Musa is approaching 26 years old and its going to be time for him to be the preferred striker at his club….Mandzukic at 26 was with Wolfsburg and then Bayern…and it was the beginning of his very good career, being the relied on work horse that could score goals.
If we go back to what we need to see from Musa, in my opinion, he needs to win his starting role at a club, he needs to be consistent…EFFECTIVE and RELEVANT to his team. Why do I keep bring up these things…well because thats what matters the most. It doesn’t matter if you’re tall/short, fast/slow, technical/clinical/skilled/bullish…or whatever else we see in players. All we want from our striker is his goals and it won’t matter how he scores them (Ziva’s tap in remarks and goals from outside the box comments come from his sarcasm, not reality). Poachers, dribblers, Thierry Henri or Joe the Plumber…I really don’t care how they’re scored…I just want goals…thats what it means to be effective as a striker, it means you effectively score because thats your role and once you start scoring (because thats your role), you then become relevant and more important to your team! Mandzukic was a lunch box player, Musa seems to be a little more talented but does he have the grit to succeed?
Great information Slavonac
I agree he needs more time at club and repka
And if he only turns out to be some great joker off the bench. Still better than nothing!
Should he move to say a mid level German club for instance and get a starting role?
I’d rather he stay at Benfica after they sell off Ramos.
He would likely be given the opportunity to start and he’s been doing well there off the bench.
New leagues and new coaches sometimes come with transition periods.
This should be seamless.
I kinda agree with Maminjo, if he gets playing time at Benfica, that’ll be good for him to keep developing, gaining confidence and eventually moving on. That league is decent and lots of talent there.
A mid tier team in Germany wouldn’t be bad but for him to succeed he’d need to be an immediate impact. I’m really not sure about where he should go but I do know his time to shine is in the next 12-24 months.
Would agree with the same thing, any mid-table team or a team knocking on the door to European football would suit Musa the best in top 5 leagues.
He could take the Raul Jimenez route and play for a team in the mid-table (i.e. Wolves) who were in Europa league and in Musa’s instance a team like Brighton, Villa or even a Brentford depending on if strikers like Evan ferguson or Ollie Watkins will leave but in this case, they wouldn’t be leaving.
Love the analysis, Slavonac! Well done.
I think Musa can be a Prso-type striker for us. But things need to align. He needs to be a starter wherever he plays next season and he needs to start getting reps for CRO.
Villarreal reach verbal agreement with Livakovic

This is good news if it happens. La Liga would be great for his development, if he can secure a starting spot. Last week I read he was going to Turkey, which i wasn’t too thrilled about…it would be better to stay at Dinamo.
Great move for Livakovic I think!
From the read on that article it seems like Dinamo has a large asking price in terms of what the individual clubs are looking for.
It will be interesting to see if it works out.
