Heartbreak abound. Rijeka raised the hopes of many with a 1-0 they took in the 41st minute with a goal from Heber. Even after the Greeks tied it up in the 66th minute, a 1-1 draw looked like a win heading back to Rijeka, but a 90th minute score from Olympiacos after an 83rd minute sending off of Leonard Zuta stole hope away from everyone who hoped to see Rijeka’s first journey to the group stages of the Champions League.
Fortunately, it is anything but over. Rijeka is dangerous at home and with a sold-out Rujevica, it is very possible to secure a 1-0 win, which will send them through on away goals.
Everyone knew it would be a challenge and Rijeka just might be up for it. The return leg takes place on August 22.
HEBER GOAL FOR RIJEKA
Should Rijeka get past the Greeks, they will be one of Europe’s 32 teams in September’s Champions League draw. If not, they will enter the Europa League group draw and play six matches in Europe one way or another. It’s a win-win but obviously the Holy Grail is what they will be aiming for.
55 year-old Slovenian Rijeka manager Matjaž Kek has become the Croatian Jurgen Klopp in recent seasons. His players like playing for him and he has brought a mediocre Rijeka side from mid-table HNL to dethroning Dinamo Zagreb.
But will Kek and company be able to jump over one last hurdle?
Thx for the Kovacic write up, Soul.
So I guess kovacic gonna stay in spain at least till the winter?
1-0
Rijeka go through on away goal rule.
Kek can set that up.
Real CROdrid
Keeps getting better and better.
Mateo Kovačić is getting an education with Zidane and Modrić.
He is now in his physical prime and his game keeps on growing.
Rakitic needs to transfer as Barca are going to scape goat him for all there troubles.
Would do well in that deep role he used to play.
Still can pass and shoot from range.
Many top clubs are weak in the middle and could use his skill set.
Zidane is genius at preparing his team to be ready to compete over the short, mid and long term.
Rijeka still has a chance to get through, you never know, they played a good game just some bad luck.
holler, hollah…?
HALA MADRID….. Kovacic got a standing o
I was being an ass but I guess it’s really spelled With an H haaa

I hope they can make it. Hell of a pay day to enter CL and help the club out financially.
