History has been made.
HNK Rijeka have clinched the top spot of the table with one wee to spare for the first time in Prva Liga history.
Two goals from Mario Gavranovic and goals from Roman Bezjak and Dario Zuparic sealed the fate of the 2016/17 season.
Dinamo Zagreb have long been the champions of Croatia, dominating the league title for more than a decade, but Rijeka have defied all plausible odds and will represent the nation in Champions League play beginning in the upcoming season
The club finished runners up in Croatia in 1999, 2006, 2014, 2015, and 2016, but this time the bridesmaid found a groom in the form of their first trophy since winning the Croatian Cup and Croatian Winners Cup in 2014.
Despite several victories in the nation’s cup competition, Rijeka have never before finished top ini any domestic league competition, never finishing higher than third place in Yugoslavia and never finishing higher than second in Croatia.
Rijeka have only tasted real European competition a few times, making it to the UEFA Cup Round of 32 in 1984–85, and group stages of the UEFA Europa League in 2013–14. The club wil now enter the qualifying rounds of the Champions League for the first time in history.
Rijeka will face Dinamo next week in the final game that will act only as a warm up for the Croatian Cup final, which will feature the two teams on May 31.
