Croatia faces Colombia in Orlando on Thursday, March 26th, in the first of two friendly matches. With the 2026 World Cup just around the corner, these are exactly the type of matches Croatia needs to test the water against strong competition. Zlatko Dalić has to field the closest thing he has to a World Cup starting eleven (minus Gvardiol).
Defence: Stanišić – Vušković – Šutalo – Jakić
At the back, the biggest change is obviously on the left side. With Joško Gvardiol out with injury, Josip Stanišić should slide in at left back without much debate. He has had a tremendous season for Bayern, and not just in routine league matches either. He has shown up in big Champions League moments and continues to prove that he is one of Croatia’s most reliable defenders, no matter where he plays.
That also opens the door on the right flank for Kristijan Jakić, who has earned every right to start for the Vatreni after his qualifying campaign. He is not flashy (other than the absolute banger against Montenegro), but he reads the game well and does the dirty work. If Ivan Strinić pocketed Lionel Messi in 2018, maybe Jakić can do the job for now. Ivan Smolčić also deserves time off the bench, as he’s had a very strong year with Como, one of the emerging stories in the Serie A.
At centre back, Josip Šutalo should still be trusted. Regardless of his ups and downs in terms of club form, Šutalo has always looked good in the red and white checkers, so he likely remains a starter.
Next to him, though, there should not even be a debate anymore. Luka Vušković has to play.
This is the big talking point, and rightly so. The kid is exploding this year for Hamburg, the transfer hype is getting louder by the week, and every performance seems to push the price tag higher. He now sits just 10 million euros behind Gvardiol in valuation. When you have a defender that talented, that physically dominant, that calm on the ball, and that obviously destined for the big stage, you do not keep him on the bench at the dawn of a World Cup summer. He has four games until then, and the integration must happen now. It would be an absolute waste to leave him out against Colombia or Brazil, and even more absurd if that hesitation carried into the tournament itself. We all remember what Gvardiol looked like when he truly arrived on the world stage in 2022. Vušković could repeat that dominance in 2026, and perhaps even surpass it.
Midfield: Modrić – Baturina – P. Sučić
Croatia still revolves around Luka Modrić. At this point, the man is basically refusing to age. Even at 40, he is still dictating games and dragging AC Milan back to relevance. If he is healthy, he starts. End of discussion.
With Kovačić out, Petar Sučić should get the nod alongside him. His start to life at Inter has been encouraging, and while he is not yet a locked-in star, he looks increasingly comfortable at that level. Some starts, some substitute appearances — that is exactly what you want to see from a player who might be asked to play a serious role for Croatia very soon. This feels like the right moment to keep pushing him.
And then there is Martin Baturina, who, for me, is one of the easiest selections in the entire team.
This is the perfect match to test whether his club form can finally carry over to the national team. At Como, he has been outstanding over the last few months and, frankly, has looked like the main man in a team with Nico Paz. Should it not, we have trusty Andrej Kramarić to fit the 10 role. But if Baturina can translate the Como version of himself into a Croatia shirt, then suddenly this team has a new X-factor going into the World Cup.
Attack: Perišić – Budimir – Marco P.
Up front, I would keep things relatively straightforward. Ivan Perišić starts on the left wing because there is still no one I trust more there in a big match. He remains one of the few Croatian attackers who consistently plays with conviction, and even at this stage of his career, we still go as Perišić goes.
Through the middle, Ante Budimir gets the start for me. That said, Petar Musa’s start to the MLS campaign is a very encouraging development. Lets see what he can do off the bench against Colombia.
On the right, I would absolutely go with Marco Pašalić. Every time he plays for Croatia, he brings something fresh. The tempo changes, and the attack becomes less predictable. There is more intent, more directness, and more willingness to actually take players on. Croatia has lacked pace and spontaneity in wide areas for a while now, and Pašalić helps solve that. Let’s hope Dalić relies on him going into the World Cup.
This Colombia match is an opportunity to iron out the last few questionable positions going into the World Cup. How confident do you feel going into this clash with Colombia, and next week, with Brazil? How will Croatia line up, and will Dalić trust starboy Vušković and Baturina?
Croatiansports.com prediction: 2-1 Croatia (goals from Baturina and Modrić)

Would love to see this same back three lineup, but the backline being Gvardiol, Vušković and Stanišić.
What channel is Brazil vs Croatia on?
Can’t find it anywhere
Article says it’s on CBF TV (the Brazil NT channel) on YouTube – but I don’t see Brazil’s match vs France tomorrow (nevermind Croatia next week) listed under future events
NOVA TV if you have access ?
It would be great to have unlimited substitutions for these friendlies, since it is for information feedback only. Maybe that is the case.
Sounds good, If a 3-man backline, Sutalo out, Kramaric/ Musa in. Choosing the right players from a strong roster, is a good problem to have.
@Martin
How’s Orlando ?
Did you find the tittie bars you were after ?
Thx
Vlasic after a good season might be heading to Bundesliga and Borussia Dortmund ?
Reports also suggest that there is interest from Torino and West Ham for Pandur?

Croatia 3 v Swiss 1
Good win against a physically strong Swiss team.
The Swiss equalised in the 68th minute following a cross into our box from a free kick. We were missing our CB and goalscorer Puljic who had to be replaced at the start of the second half due to head injury.
Immediately from the KO in the 69th minute Mikic ran into the penalty box and cut the ball back for Covic who nicely side footed the ball into the net for 2 -1.
Shortly after in the 76th, a huge mistake by the Swiss defence failing to clear a long ball from our goalkeeper Rajic only for Baric to make it 3 – 1.
Smiljanic made it 4 -1 in stoppage time after latching on to a cut back from Baric.
In three day’s time we play Norway, and the last match is against France.
Only the winners of the group progress to the EURO finals to be held in Wales come June?
Opps 4 – 1
Why haven’t any of the Ontario boys commented on the new law ?
I know you’re embarrassed by being a MORONS and buying tickets at 3x face value rather than listening to the GOAT ANONYMOUS
But let Croats know when the law comes into effect and how it will work
Thx

Why is Anonymous and all Canadian Croats not upset or outraged about Bill C-9???
Bill C-9, also known as the Combatting Hate Act, aims to amend the Criminal Code to strengthen protections against hate propaganda and hate crimes, including provisions that could impact religious expression.
Concerns have been raised about the potential removal of good faith religious speech protections, which could affect how religious teachings are communicated in Canada.
Sounds like communism to me. But that is happening in other places too.
If the overwhelming majority of Canadians are voting for this, and Croat-Canadians who are against it (are just simply being outvoted on the issue)…then they can either move back to Cro or just stay put and live with it.
Most people are not in the unique position to have a second homeland to move to (where they speak the language and can integrate into the culture).
If you’re not willing to move back even if you’re completely dissatisfied with your birth nation and don’t see it as a viable place to raise your kids…then you can’t complain.
It is what it is.
U19 Euro 2026 Qualifying Elite Round
HT Croatia 1 Switzerland 0
Puljic goalscorer for us after 11 minutes following a corner.
The Swiss goalkeeper missed the cross and Puljic on the far post tapped it in.
Puljic another one of our young CB’s plays for Bayern Munich.
Patrice Covic far from impressive. Noa Mikic one of our better players, and for once solid defensively and dangerous going forward.
Second half LIVE on MAXsport for those interested.
Covic just scored a World Cup goal
2-1 Croatia
U18 and U17 also play today – please let people know about these things ahead of time – so we can plan accordingly
Thx
Baric for 3 – 1.
Thanks for posting – turned it on the background for the last 25 minutes – most of the players are very clumsy and not coordinated – it’s really a terrible level (Croatia guy had a break-away to make it 4-1 and shot it right at the keeper) – yes Mikic looks above this level (but I mean he’s already played in the Champions League, so that’s to be expected)
Baric 3-1
Funny mistake by Swiss CB (why was Baric in any offside position)
This level is so terrible – it’s like kids playing at the park
Looks like Covic read what you wrote
Didn’t Dalić already confirm that it’s three at the back?
Duje, Vušković and Šutalo as the back three.
Stanišić will be right flank. Perišić on the left.
Modrić, Sučić, Baturina with Krama and Budimir up top.
Yes, all the reports are suggesting that it will be three at the back with Vuskovic in the middle, Sutalo on the right and DCC on the left.
Yes
Back 3
Markus must be spending his time getting wasted with Ante at theme-parks rather than focused on nogomet
Sad
It’s gonna be a 3-5-2(3-2-2-1-2/3-4-1-2)

Dark Horse Dalic will be back to testing our beloved 3-5-2 in any variation you may perceive… I believe we will run out as drawn above.. as stated by the Poglavnik himself we are suited for this trial once again with our current crop of players whom play this style naturally in there club teams
Why not.. If we can show that we can handle our own in these friendlies and once we can slot Gvardiol and Kovacic eventually when there ready we will hopefully even be 30 percent better then anything we see here!
