Croatia’s 2-1 loss to Portugal on Thursday certainly brought up loads of talking points, whether positive or negative. Dalić fielded a new formation and used fresh faces in the start of his Nations League campaign upon facing crucial National Team retirements and injuries. The 3-5-2 formation caused a lack of defensive cohesion in the first half but certainly utilizes the player profiles the Vatreni currently have in a more effective sense. The lack of wingers makes a 4 at back formation tricky to deploy and I’d certainly like to see Dalić continue this experiment in the match against Poland, BUT with certain changes.
Defence:
A three centre-back formation is sensible for this Croatian squad considering our lack of right-backs due to injury and no real left-back. Gvardiol was class once again in the Portugal match and Šutalo’s revitalized form was certainly visible. Pongračić on the other hand, is simply a failed experiment at this point in time. His defensive positioning and awareness was exposed against Spain in the Euros and once again in the Nations League against Portugal. Sosa had to over compensate for Pongračić’s man on the first Portuguese goal. Ćaleta-Car, although not a permanent solution, plugged that hole much better than Pongračić did upon coming in in the second half. Until Erlić can be tested in this formation, DCC is the way to go.
Wing-backs:
Borna Sosa was serviceable on the left side but without a natural striker on the pitch until Matanović was subbed on, his crosses were essentially useless. Should Matanović start against Poland, Sosa is our best current option on the left flank. Perišić is of course an option as well, but it seems as though he is best performing off the bench for 30 minutes. Kristijan Jakić was surprisingly good as he did not stand out in any sense but certainly held his own against Portugal’s quickest and most dangerous player in Rafael Leao. I would give him the start once more as he’s proven himself to be a decent Swiss army knife, and Pjaca has never played at the right wing-back before.
Midfield:
Mateo Kovačić is the best player (alongside Gvardiol) on this team right now. Pep has truly shaped him to become more impactful throughout the game and it was so visible against Portugal. Kralj Luka once again proves his eternal class and there is no reason to sit him. However, yesterday’s match was conclusive proof that taking him off at the 60-70th minute for fresh legs is now a possibility. The Sučić cousins are ballers. Plain and simple. Luka Sučić, when fit, MUST be a starter for this National Team. The moment he touches the pitch his positive attacking play is impactful and the mix of precision and threat in his passes is mystifying. However, Petar Sučić is certainly the more suitable profile to play with Modrić and Kovačić from the opening whistle. His composure on the ball and talent is so exciting. In my opinion, Luka is more suited for a game against an inferior opponent (like Poland) in which we must break a bunker or need more attacking prowess. Petar is perfect for a match-up like Portugal in which we prioritize midfield control and defensive stability. Martin Baturina was unfortunately disappointing in his first official start. But this means absolutely nothing. He does not typically play this kind of role for Dinamo and was not the number one midfield option (like he is for Dinamo) but the number THREE option. This takes some getting used to and his nerves must’ve impacted his play as well. Fret not, in time, Baturina will prove why he is currently the best player in the HNL. Start Luka Sučić against Poland but Baturina should be given 30 minutes in Modrić’s place at the end of the match.
Forwards:
Ahh yes… Croatia starts two strikers… but neither are strikers? Andrej Kramarić is the current top scorer in the Bundesliga and showed his class in the Portugal match but why start him next to Mario Pašalić, who once again showed why he is not of starting quality for the National Team? I love Pašalić and he is truly the definition of a super-sub, but time and time again he has shown that he cannot start for the Vatreni. When we had no right-winger, I could understand the experiment, but yesterday’s formation did not warrant him starting whatsoever. Igor Matanović came on for 30 minutes and found the cross/pass five times. Five. Could he have done better with two of them? Sure. But the kid is raw and it was his debut, he gets a pass. However, Matanović provided more serviceable striking presence than any of our strikers have since 2018 Mandžukić. His game IQ and ability to find space is frightening and I’d like to see him get the start against Poland with Kramarić in support. Ante Budimir is a decent option off the bench late in the game should Matanović struggle as well. We just need a real striker to provide a target in the box and who knows how to get on the other end of crosses, and he just proved he can, so why not start him? Who cares about age?
I’d also like to see Perišić and/or Pjaca off the bench to add dynamic elements from the wings should we struggle to score against Poland, however I don’t think this 3-5-2 is suited for classic wingers and the situation is dependent on the way the game develops.
Here are the changes Dalić should make against Poland for our second 3-5-2 experiment (which can shift into a 3-4-2-1 with Sučić pushing up), with some suggested subs below the starters:
No idea why matanovic is so highly rated..he is only proven in bundesliga 2. Musa is proven in portuguese league with benfica and boavista despite given limited minutes. He can proven with goals in MSL too. Form is temporary class is permanent..and he has that class

Imagine Sosa crossing it and budimir, petko, matanovic, pasalic, and perisic are all in the box hah
Kramarić most likely out tomorrow with an illness. He’s been one of our better performers. Against Poland, I’d like to see Petković pair with Matanović in that second striker position.
It will likely be Mario Pasalic as a replacement (since he’s a huge favorite of Dalic).
Pasalic isn’t good with bringing the ball up field. He’s better as a one-touch passer and shooter who can also get his head on things.
He was largely invisible against Portugal in that first half because of this. Only if we dominate possession and are sending balls into the box, will he be useful against Poland.
I’d like to see Baturina get another shot though. Seems like Modric and Baturina at the same time won’t work though.
We need to start both Luka Sucic and Kovacic though.
I agree that Pašalić is a Dalić favorite and I’m concerned that he’ll start. Pašalić has earned his ‘trusted’ status with his timely goals. But most of those goals have happened when our offense is pushing for a goal in the second half after he has been subbed on. He has a nose for goal and I saw him in some great positions to score even in the Portugal game. But that was after we went down and we’re pushing more and taking chances. That’s his strength and he should be utilized in the super-sub role in the second half when we are pushing for a goal.
It should be noted that much of the reason we have been chasing a goal is because Dalić poor selection/tactics have caused us to give up a first half goal.
However for tomorrow with short rest and since Pašalić started last match I think he will go with another of his trusted guys, and I think Petković will fit that bill.
Yes, Petkovic would be a good option against Poland.
Kramarić most likely out tomorrow with an illness. He’s been one of our better performers. Against Poland, I’d like to see Petković pair with Matanović in that second striker position.
My only comment from the other day was stuck in moderation but it was simple
My only notable takeaway from the Portugal game is that matanovic is very interesting.
Big at 6’4’’ but mostly the movement to hunt balls. Looked extremely dangerous. Never seen him before so not sure if this is the standard or an aberration but I like what i saw a lot
Can someone please explain to me what matanovic did in his 30 minutes of playing time that got him so much praise that musa didn’t get? Not a musa sympathizer, just trying to get a better understanding. Thanks
He was much faster, for one thing. He put himself in unquestionable positions to receive the ball and send it on goal from the air… on five different occasions, which Dalić publicly said was the most the team had had in a long time. He set up Pašalić for what would have been a clear goal-scoring opportunity and actually resulted in what should have been a penalty. He defended a set play at the other end too. Overall, he played very well. He didn’t finish effectively in those 30 minutes, but he’s very young and looked like a player with an extraordinary wisdom for the game plus superb athleticism.
He had a great season last year for Karlsruhe and is the first option off the bench for Eintracht Frankfurt this season.
Hopefully he pops in some goals for both Frankfurt and us. His career will take off from there and we will have a solid young striker cemented as our first option for the World Cup.
Why the hell do they hate Budimir so much? He’s the only forward that tries to create offence. In the Euros, they actually looked like they might be a threat when they put him in. Without him, it was a bunch of horizontal passing across the field.
Kovacic probably heading to saudi in january. Read the news. The next brozovic to decline upon moving to saudi and then just retire…our midfield doomsday if that happens..still relying on modric to bring experience and carry the team..lol
Nah
Kova been starting every game this season (even when Rodri back)
Rodri to RM in jan
Offset by gundogan back
So kova should keep getting lots of playing time (man city in 5 completions this yr – including new club World Cup next summer for a month)
Kova probably wants to up his contract at man city (he’s on 150k per wk vs Kdb 400k per wk) as he’s still making same as he was at Chelsea
So put out this rumour and let Saudi offer him big $$$ and get man city to up him
Negotiation 101
Zero percent chance he goes before 2026 we as he’s going to be the man in midfield w two of our youngsters

As Mart said – not much to see here – Anonymous will flag that the 2nd penalty we got was from Kacavenda flopping in the box is just embarrassing – Kacavenda should have been booked for diving/simulation (and not awarded a penalty) – bro it’s Faroe Islands – can’t u even get past one defender (when they already down to 10 men) u need to dive, lol
The goal we conceded is very similar goal to what Ronaldo scored against us (but in that game everyone blames Pong (for ball going over his head), while in the U21 nobody will blame Luka – but it’s the same responsibility really – ball over their heads) – no clue why Luka is blaming the keeper afterwards – he should have anticipated the ball better – the man are the near post (which he tracked) wasn’t a threat given the cross – our RB should have done better too – but Luka needs to be vocal and organize the two other defenders and keeper in this situation
Luka only:

Luka passing range / vision is insane ! those sweet long diagonal passes to Soticek on LW are just yummy – all we need it a Durdov or equivalent on RW to pan out – and the future is bright
Couple additional pt
Noa mikic wasn’t on the bench, so not sure what happened (despite him being called up)
More embarrassing than kacavenda getting that penalty and celebrating – is the jumping in the air celebrations by olic and Kranjcar on the bench – was this the game plan ? Flop in box hope for penalty, lol
Granted they only had 2 days to work w the squad – hopefully we see more vs Portugal
Maminjo comment re Dalic screwing olic by taking matanovic is so smart ! Dalic not going out of his way to help the guy who wants his job. As defence while u21 mean nothing would note Archie grey played for England u21 yday (he’s coming off bench for spurs already) and odobert for France u21 (he started last 2 spurs game winger). While bergvahl (could play u21 – already off bench spurs) came off bench for Sweden senior to join kulusevski. Meaning no same if matanovic is was still in u21
Ante, great breakdown, thanks for the insight. As I’ve said before the next 12-18 months will be to see who will be representing the checkers for WC 2026. Keep it up boys, Bok
Modric needs to go to the bench enough is enough time to move on. Players like baturina and sucic wont excel while modric is still on field.
I would have Kovacic and sucic x2 start as the midfield trio. P. Sucic looks like a Brozo clone there’s is tone of CM options it’s time for modric to go.
Kovacic,P. Sucic, Jakic, Moro all capable DM / number 6 role. Also pasalic plays this role for Atlanta know.
L.Sucic , Baturina, majer behind striker role.

@Vlad.
You have me tranquilzed to a certain point, yes sir you are correct.
I would be surprised if Dalic was not to start with Modric. We need to have two forwards so it will be Budimir or Matanovic and since Kramaric is in good form he will definitely get the nod for one of those positions.
DCC will come in for Pongracic and I would give Luka Sucic the nod over Baturina. Perisic coming in as a sub as a wing back on the right-hand side against Portugal did not make sense. If he has to come on it has to be on the left hand side ? I think that Sosa will start again.
The moment someone says I’d like to see perisic play……they lose all credibility.
Really funny reading comments online that Igor matanovic has an accent when he speaks Croatian. I bet those same pple didn’t give one shit about Eduardo when he opted to play for Hrv. Or dare I say rakitic
I know everyone will scream but don’t start Modric. It has nothing to do with his performance but lets be level headed. He needs to go back to Real refreshed and not broken down. Let Kova play with Baturina + L. Sucic. Bring on Modric for the last 30. Dalic can’t fear change.
Modric off the bench for the last half hour is the best option for us.
We generally start slow, so having us put out a fresh Modric in the latter half of the game would be a gamechanger.
I bet Dalić is not gonna have the balls to start Matanovic. He’s gonna start Budimir and replace him with Igor after
Nothing wrong with Budimir starting. Just having a striker out there is a huge step for Dalic, so he’d better take it.
Budimir is starting in La Liga and had a great Euro for us.
I agree that we need to start incorporating young strikers (because Budimir is already 33) so we should definitely give Matanovic minutes this game as well.
If another young striker is doing well in the next round, I’d call them up too.
@Maminjo
I was just responding to Ante who proposed that Matanovic should start!
Nothing wrong with Budimir starting for me either. I do think he should start and be replaced by Mata in 2nd half. And if Matanovic does as well again, start him the match after that
Pull the chute !!! Get the kids out there. We have been “half pregnant” with past era players [except Modric/ Kova] everybody else is on game to game tryout. We’re Croatian!!! When did we care about feelings? Jebi , feelings as my late father would say. Just win.
Dalic’s Things 2 Do…
#1. – Start a striker from the first minute of the game (Budimir or Matanovic).
#2. – Direct the role players who we have on the flanks to send crosses to said striker (guys like Sosa & Jakic are not stars…they are role players who require this clear direction).
#3. – Continue to test out young midfielders (like both Sucics and Baturina) and don’t be afraid to limit Modric’s minutes (Kovacic and Luka Sucic should be the guaranteed starters for every game moving forward).
Future task:
Next time, call up Marco Pasalic and another young wing (whoever is performing out of Soticek, Matkovic, Crnac, etc.) and give them minutes as well.
