With Croatia coming into Euro 2024 with arguably their deepest roster in recent years, there will be plenty of competition to earn minutes off the bench for multiple positions across the board. One of those guy’s is Atalanta’s Mario Pašalić. Not a fan favorite by any means, but Pašalić is regularly left out of the conversation by many Vatreni supporters around the globe. However, Pašalić is a talented player, and under the right circumstances, can be a far more useful option than most realize. He is coming off an ‘eight goal/seven assist’ season in all competitions; and won a Europa League title with Atalanta by handing Leverkusen their only loss of the year.
The biggest strength for Mario Pašalić coming into the Euro squad is his versatility. Pašalić is capable of playing proficiently as the the #10 or #8 in the midfield as he has been positioned there for Atalanta many times. He can also sit back deeper and play behind other midfielders such as Lookman. Pašalić has the ability to play RW, a position he mostly plays for the National Team, although not his most ideal spot on the pitch. With so many moving pieces for the Vatreni in 2024, these are the two options I see Pašalić coming off the bench and being used in large in the game.
If Pašalić receives the nod to play in the midfield trio of Croatia, the most likely option would be for him to come on as a sub to provide more attacking support as a #10. We have predominantly seen this from him in Serie A and Europa League where Pašalić plays the #10; where he is most comfortable on and off the ball. However, he has been used as a #8 when Atalanta opt to play Lookman in front of him. Pašalić’s main two strengths when playing the #10 role are pressing and positioning, two characteristics that have allowed him to find the back of the net and fit into the midfield system that Atalanta have been successful in.
Pressing: When Dalić plays strikers such as Budimir or Petković, their lack of speed becomes a problem when he decides to deploy an aggressive high press. Bringing on a player like Pašalić for support in an attacking role would be useful for pressing. He is comfortable playing higher up and getting involved in the press, but could still allow Croatia to play with a positional striker such as Petković or Budimir.
Positioning: Another crucial aspect in any midfielder is their ability to position themselves properly on and off the ball. While Pašalić may not be the best player going 1v1 with an opponent, he does have the vision and spatial awareness that makes him excellent with ‘off the ball’ movement. This ability often finds him in the right space in the box (think Ivica Olić) to put home a tap-in or mid-range finish. A majority of Pašalić’s goals this season have come off this movement and would be perfect for the style of play Croatia has been utilizing lately. If Dalić decides to continue his trend of pushing more players forward into the attack, Pašalić’s spacial awareness would make him a serious threat for the Vatreni.
Another option for Dalić to use Pašalić would be in the #8 role; known as the box-to-box midfielder. In games where Dalić is attempting to slow down the speed of play and hold possession, Pašalić has the edge over a CAM like Majer to also be able to slide into this tactical style and play the role Modrić and Kovačić. Another advantage of playing a midfield trio with two #8’s is that one will be offensive- minded while the other more defensive. One complaint of the MBK trident is that when Modrić and Kovačić play together, they tend to both sit back deeper. By doing so they sometimes end up congesting the midfield too much and clog up our chances to transition offensively. By subbing in Pašalić, he can serve as an offensive minded box-to-box midfielder, and remove the congestion that occurs when both of Croatia’s #8’s get sucked in too deep.
If Mario Pašalić can be used properly, I argue that he should be given more minutes in his natural positions within the midfield and not at RW, where he is less comfortable. I think Pašalić fits best coming on in his natural position as a #10 midfielder and subbing in for Kovačić. If Pašalić can clock minutes this Euro tournament in his natural position, not only will we see a better Pašalić than in tournaments before, but also see the Vatreni get one more piece in an offensively dynamic team that Dalić has been building. If Dalić gives Pašalić a chance as a sub in the midfield trio, he is the most versatile midfielder and the easiest to mold into whatever type of game you need to throw him into. Whether it be a fast pace, attack oriented game or a match you need to keep slowed down, Pašalić can handle the situation in a way he is more familiar and prepared for than any other midfield sub on this roster. When Dalić needs his man to step up and slide someone into the midfield trio, Mario Pašalić is our most potent option available off the bench; whether Croatia is leading or losing the game.
Correction not Olive but Olic phantom call. As well, it’s only a foul if you didn’t touch the ball prior to the take down.
If I commit a slide for example and hit the ball before your trip over my legs, it’s clean but if I hit your legs before the ball or miss the ball all together it’s a foul.
Hope I didn’t say anything that would insult your intelligence. The lines have been blurred so often I understand anyone’s confusion.
Perisic hand ball was also a disaster. At that time the rule was if the ball hit your hand it was continuation of play but if it’s hand to ball, a stop in play or penalty shot in the box.
After that controversy they adjusted the rules by making it complicated for match fixing but I digress.
Thanks for the response, seemed to me, he meant to trip him and thought the better of it, and before he could pull back his foot, Mateo did his best to make sure he paid for his original bad intentions.
@Krom
Great question and I agree whole heartedly. Being raised in Canada via hockey, diving is sacrilege. I grew up idolizing Wendell Clark, no matter how many hooks, hacks or illegal hits, you always try to stay a float.
Sadly, even in hockey there’s this plague of diving. I hate this virus ???? in sports but it can be a necessary evil.
3 decades ago I was playing for Oakville Velibit B team in the GTA, I was on a break away against a English team and I was tripped . I fell, it should have been an instant red but due to my size, it was perceived as diving.
That being said, Kova was clipped and if he didn’t embellish he would most likely not get the call. In Fred’s or Greiz’s situation, no one was near them yet they went doe like being hit by a sniper in the bell tower.
Lastly, there have been a few cards given over the years for simulation but it’s so rare.
I’ve always believed that even if no one dived the fix is in. Sports have always been corrupt. Brazil in 2014 was so rigged, Fred’s non foul, Olive phantom interference on the goalie who he never touched and the foul at midfield for the break away goal.
They fixed it that Brazil would go to the final but they couldn’t give Brazil 6 penalty shots to beat Germany in the semis.
Brazil had spent 32 billion dollars on that World Cup, fans were protesting before the tournament because of the lack of medical, transportation and employment infrastructure.
Anyway, I hope this gives you insight. I’m drinking wine with the wife so I will. It proof read lol.
Grammar Police eat it.

LOL, Nice…Grammar police, my favorite Monty python skit !
Seems to me there was a takedown of Corluka in the box on a corner kick in that Brazilian game.
In the end they got fully embarrassed by Germany.
Thanks again,
The best soccer team should win, not the best actors in my book.
I heard, true story, that he is part Croatian. In those years Wendell played I think there was 6 or 7 Croatians in the league that had a tough guy type role. Huge number considering the amount of teams in the NHL.
Off the Wall Question that has been bugging me all week,
Honestly, did Kovacic dive last week?
I hates games that are determined what I perceive as dives, even if it is in Croatia benefit, I believe it ruins the game.
What is the formal definition of a dive or flop? Maybe I don’t understand what is really considered a dive or flop.
If you go down purposely when someone is trying to trip you, is it still is a trip?
If you fake being tripped, and there was no intent to trip, than is that is a dive or flop?
Has anyone ever witnessed a penalty for diving or flopping? I have never witnessed one being received.
If Croatia had gotten the proper call on the what I perceived as a planned dive by Griezmann, Croatia would have been world cup champs in 2018. Also, Croatia would have beat Brazil in 2010, if the Fred did not have his planned dive against Lovren.
The way referees are heavy handed, with Trips, vs calling no dives it seems, it encourages this behavior.
If we were just afraid of getting a penalty for flopping as well as tripping it would be a better game.

2002 was different suker was out of shape prosinecki was done boka and jarni played well. Mirko Jozic was old style coach who olayed with 7 defenders totaly different today
Modric is a storoj kova is in prime broz is looking bad maybe when tournament comes he wakes up.
Young back line we have and krama is 30+ is in great shape
Difference is the older boys are all in shape comapred to 2002.
I think we win 1 0 2 0 satuday beat Albanian and we draw or beat italy my prediction with 5 or 7 points all is good.
I hope we have magical run and finally shock with gold
I agree. the new generation of over 30 all stay in top shape. The game has changed drastically over the last decade when it comes to year round maintenance and preparation.
433. Midfield and attacking 3 are all over 30 years. Average age 32-33. Reminds me of 2002 WC when suker prosineski asanovic jarni are still playing and couldnt perform against mexico. Next match forced to blood young players. Hopefully not the case for euro 2024.
Perisic budimir Kramaric
Kovacic brozovic modric
My boy AZ is back!!!
Yes our midfield is over 30 years of age. I never noticed that.
I guess you’re right. They might suddenly choke, just like our older guys did in 2002.
fingers crossed!
“They might suddenly choke, just like our older guys did in 2002.”
Only game i consider a choke in that tournament was Ecuador and i dont think it had to do with having ‘older guys’. Everyone who started that game was 22-29. The three oldest guys were kovac 30, jarni 33, and boksic 32.
I know. I was being sarcastic with poor ol’ AZ.
2002 World Cup squad was our post-war team. It was an achievement to have even qualified for the World Cup after coming out of a war a few years earlier.
We didn’t have any youth development from 1991-95 so our teens never got the development they needed to progress and become the footballers that previous and later generation received.
There was a noticeable 5-6 year talent gap there, which recovered from 2006 onward.
“Midfield and attacking 3 are all over 30 years.”
Aside from perisic, they are all fit and inform, all have +2000 mins for their clubs this season.
“Reminds me of 2002 WC when suker prosineski asanovic jarni are still playing and couldnt perform against mexico.”
Asanovics last game was in 2000. Jarni is a left back. Suker and prosinecki played the first half against mexico then didnt play for the rest of the tournament.
The guy is just trolling or he’s suffering from some sort of depression. All his posts are about the sky falling with Croatian football and knocking our players any chance he gets.
Modric, Broz and Kovacic are older, yes…but they are still playing well for us and for their clubs.
It’s laughable to compare this to our 1998 guys who were still on the squad for the 2002 World Cup. Suker was without a club and signed with 1860 Munich to get match fit, Boksic was at Middlesborough, Zuti was signing with the Slovenian league, and Jarni actually had no official club anymore (and just retired after that World Cup, lol).
If I ever met Mario Pasalic in person I’d ask him to forgive me for not believing in him. I admit when I’m wrong about a player and with him I was wrong. It doesn’t mean I think he’s a starter…it just means I believe he is a valuable member of our team.
Yeah, he’s kind of like Ivica Olic for me.
I hated Ivica Olic’s game. Hate that he missed thousands of chances against Turkey in Euro2008. But he’s scored so many critical goals for us and you can’t explain how he does it other than “positioning”.
Same goes for Pasalic. The guy just moves so well without the ball and knows where to be, despite looking kind of unskilled like Olic at times (i’ll never forget that full frontal wipeout flip he did on the goal line against Spain at Euro 2020).
In the past few years though, I’ve noticed that he’s improved a LOT outside the box though. He’s launched some bombs onto goal.
He also seems to have a knack for hitting the crossbar for some reason ha ha. He did it against Portugal last game. He did it against the Netherlands too in the Nations League semis too.

Kalinic doing Kalinic things.
Hey guys, i got bad news
Looks like Croatia has no chance in these euros
I just read espn fcs top 100 players in the world.
There are no Croats.
There are 14 from Germany, 12 from Spain, 12 from England, 7 from Portugal, 4 from Italy
Not sure how we’re supposed to compete with that
For defenders Gvardiol is 18th on the list
LOL! Thanks for letting us know, hopefully we will surprise people again as the usual requirement.
I think Bruce Springsteen, rarely had a hit song, and who the hell is this Oliver Dragojevic character?
We can’t rely on the world to validate us, we must know, see and Verjuje!
The light still shines in complete darkness to those who believe.
This list means nothing, especially as it comes from ESPN. I went back and checked previous years list. In 2019, the year after Modric won the Ballon d’or and led Croatia to the WC finals, he wasn’t even in the top 10 of central midfielders. Miralem Pjanic is on the list. Of course, who wouldn’t want Miralem Pjanic over Luka Modric in 2019. Hilarious.
In Zagreb now and headed to Split…then off to Germany for a week. Scored tickets to the Cro -Italy game in the lottery draw and luckily got some amazing seats. Cousin is headed to Berlin and saying it will be crazy there.
Anyone headed to watch some games?
Pasalic is a true joker. Always has a nose for the net and is a great sub off the bench. As Ante mentioned he’s so versatile that it makes him a valuable piece of the puzzle. Seeing these young guys step up along with our current form has me optimistic for a deep run.
Can’t someone explain Budimir’s production rate in La Liga, if he is as slow and ineffective as you make him out to be?Are half of his goals penalty shots?
Sorry just wondering. Seems strange, sounds like a not Kramaric problem, regarding dual personality for the national team.
“Are half of his goals penalty shots?”
17 goals, 3 of which are penalties.
“Can’t someone explain Budimir’s production rate in La Liga, if he is as slow and ineffective as you make him out to be?”
Hes not ineffective, basically his importance to us is his aerial duels are in the 95th percentile. Reason why ppl don’t like him because he runs like a ‘giraffe’, even though mandzukic was literally the exact same. People throw a fit thinking we deserve a fast guy with amazing dribbling like da silva, but our genetics contradicts this. Truth is we will always have strikers with the body type of; kalinic, mandzukic, musa, budimir, beljo, etc.
Thanks for the response. Yes I remember the love/hate affair we had with Mario, that he was not good with his feet, but in the end everyone seemed to love him.
Ante, seems like he would be a really decent guy, did not get to watch the Portugal game where people were not happy with him, not executing and capitalizing on a few opportunities. Sesko has the same body type, so he is in good company.
Hope in the end it works out for all like Mario, but many people were favoriting Kalinic who seem to have better footwork if I remember correctly.
I think Suker was the exception and DaSilva like you say , but we’ll have to wait for another Brazilian or another one-of-a-kind Suker lark talent, for everyone to be happy. Never been clear to me if Kramaric dislikes that position, but anyway, seems to lack a certain overt aggression required which he shows for Hoffenheim, to capitalize on the short windows of opportunity to score as a pure striker.
After the euro cup we need to all write down our starting 11 for World Cup 2026 and see how close we get….
I’m sure there will be at least one major random we weren’t expecting
We have a lot of youngish guys in our 18-man rotation now, so there might not be any notable surprises.
Gvardiol, Pongračić, Šutalo, Stanišić are all under 25 and starting already.
Kova will still likely start as he’s barely 30, and Majer is still 26. Ivanušec will probably win his LW spot back.
So, it’s really just a matter of how much growth Sučić, Baturina, and maybe a striker (Matanović maybe?) experience over the next couple of years to replace Broz, Modrić and maybe win over our striker spot.
If there are any surprises, they might just appear as backups first. I’m thinking guys like Zvonarek, Vušković, Petar Sučić, Matanović, and maybe one of our other U19 or U21 strikers.
I think Petar sucic and luka are cousins??
Would be awesome to see that on the field
Most likely broz will need to be replaced by World Cup is my guess?
Perisic, Kramaric, Broz and Modric (but I still think Broz and Modric will stick around).
Perisic is already kind of replaced. He’s not starting anymore, so it’s pretty much done already.
Kramaric will just be replaced in the lineup at LW with Ivanusec (unless someone new comes around and steps up).
Broz and Modric are the big ones, but if one or both can stick around as backups, then it’s a lot more manageable as they can give us some serious quality depth.
We still have Majer (who I’m sure would be more than happy to play in central midfield).
Also, Luka Sucic will probably be ready to start (the guy’s looked really good for us in limited minutes)…and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Baturina continues to grow rapidly and challenges for a spot as well.
I think we’ll be fine for the World Cup.
I tell you what there are a lot of Hrvati in Germany now. If we have something like another Turkish travesty or another obvious bogus penalty that causes us the tournament, it could get ugly, but you know what I wouldn’t blame them
I thought maybe Berlin for baturina but bjelica is gone
Salzburg?? They will need a Croatian to groom if sucic leaves!
RB Salzburg won’t spend that kind of money for him, and the league is too sideways a move for Baturina.
RB Leipzig would be better (especially if they are selling Olmo this summer).
Frankfurt has Mario Gotze and some other older Tunisian central midfielder that they’ll have to replace eventually. Would be cool to see both Baturina and Matanović there together (but I don’t know if Frankfurt spend 20+ million on players).
Yes Leipzig I was thinking of
You think he will sell for 20 mill?
Is he worth that much
I wonder how much more Dinamo gets for guys cause of their pedigree now
Luka and gvardi alone
Never mind all the rest…
He’ll go for 15-20 million.
It all depends on the agreed upon percentage Dinamo gets for future transfers.
And yes I always want Croats with other Croats
What about Wolfsburg with majer? baturina and majer may be the 2026 midfield….
Baturina at a mid grade team quality league with a Croatian coach for two years is my vote;)
Nice and easy
He is young
As a selfish for the repka Let’s have him ready for World Cup 2026
Not blown up by then
If we put as many Pašalićs on the field as we can, for as long as we can, we will be explosive. Kraj
The lack of pressing ability (and pace in general) by either Budimir or Petko is a real issue for how we want to play – never mind Budimir was terrible last game (and should have received a red card for that challenge in the box where he muffed the shot completely)
Front 3 of Kramaric-Mario P-Majer
Mario P can do everything Budimir or Petko can do but better
He’s also played as “#9” at times for Atalanta this season
But he would be more like a “false #9” or a “advanced #10” in the centre
But the starting position (#) won’t matter – they will have the freedom to inter-change and switch positions w/ each other – will be very difficult to defend (as defenders than have to make decision to follow their man – leaving space/opening where they just left – or need to be coordinate w/ rest of defensive line to “hand over” the players as they cut across)
Will be very lethal
Also gives both Majer and Krama more time in their preferred central positioning (they both have tendency to cut inside, rather than make a run down the line)
Additionally – gives room for Gvardiol to make runs down the wing (although he tends to invert also into the centre last game and/or drive towards the box when he has the ball)
Basically – we’ll clog up the area just outside the box (mostly central) – this might also lead to a penalty or two being called in our favour (which is a strategy in itself)
I said forever for pasalic for a striker role when we had like zero guys scoring
For sure Dalić wouldn’t try something like that now
Kid has a nose for goal. He’s a big body and doesn’t appear soft out there
Has hustle
That whole video put out a couple of days ago boys, was good but you guys didn’t even mention Mali pasalic as a super sub potentially
I feel this tourney we go as the pasalic boys can do as subs Bold statement but why not
Well said. Instead of trying to annoint someone to be the #9, work with what you got. Kramaric, Pasalic and Majer. YES.
Martin baturina is being monitored by chelsea and apparently the scouts like him. How would you guys feel about him going there?
Terrible
No way
Chelsea is a complete mess (how many managers since Boehly ?)
Now they have Maresca who brought Leicester back up, sure (he seems uniquely unqualified for a club like Chelsea – other than he will be a yes man) – but who cares – he did so with a squad w/ a £60m wage bill (which was higher than a quarter of the Championship teams COMBINED) competing against many teams like Plymouth Argyle (whose wage bill was £6.0m) – 3/4 of the Championship teams wage bill was £15m or less (which average around £10m or 11m))
If Baturina goes to Chelsea – he’ll most likely end up the Mario Pasalic route i.e. loaned out for [4-5] yrs, over and over again, to different teams
Moreover, Baturina seems like a level-headed and calm guy – while the dynamics / infighting at Chelsea is next level – look at this footage – everyone wants to take the penalty when it’s already 4-0, lol – not sure he’s going to be able to stand up to all this at his age
x.com/Jonathankydd/status/1780207216919715964
He needs to find a good club in a good league – where he will be given a chance to earn and play in starting position in midfield – the scrutiny and pundits etc etc etc Chelsea are amongst the worst out there
I don’t want him anywhere near the EPL.
La Liga or Bundesliga would be ideal. Serie A would be fine too.
“If Mario Pašalić can be used properly, I argue that he should be given more minutes in his natural positions within the midfield and not at RW, where he is less comfortable.”
We know mario is a good player, but the problem is we have 7 other guys who play #10 as well. Furthermore, the problem is #10 position doesn’t exist in dalics lineup.
Dalic is absolute shit ` rely on a luck
pure of luck that makes him survive`
I see we have another neznalica here!
Greenman, stfu
