After years of speculation, tentative planning, and doubt, Croatia’s capital has seemingly got what it deserves – official plans for a brand-new stadium.
In 2026, Zagreb will reportedly complete the construction of a modern, fourth-category UEFA-approved football stadium for Dinamo Zagreb the Croatian National Team. The news comes only days after Borussia Dortmund players subtly criticized Stadion Maksimir’s conditions to the media ahead of their Champions League clash against the Croatian champions. However, Croatian football fans can agree that this significant announcement is long overdue.
The stadium will be home turf for Dinamo until new grounds are built in Maksimir in 2028. Afterward, the stadium is expected to be home to Lokomotiva Zagreb.
The city of Zagreb will spend 44 million Euros on the project, erecting a stadium with a rumored capacity of about 12,000 spectators. Croatia Week reports that the stadium will implement a heated pitch, covered seating areas, and equipped facilities for staff members, players, and media. A plan for a parking lot, gathering area, and over 100 trees in the surrounding area is also in place.
It’s been a long, long time coming. The news is a magnificent way to celebrate and compliment Croatia’s success on the international stage and Dinamo’s recent triumphs in European competition. Alongside Osijek’s year-old grounds and Stadion Poljud in Split, Croatia now has three impressive stadiums to host teams from around the world in qualifiers, friendlies, and the Nations League.
While the Vatreni compete to remain alongside global giants such as Brazil, England, and France on the field, they must do so with respectable facilities and hosting venues for both home and away supporters.
This is fantastic news for the HNS, the city of Zagreb, and Croatian fans around the globe.
It’ll be way better than what’s there now. Big enough for its main purpose for Lokomotiva, etc. Good enough for Dinamo for a few years, while awaiting the new Maksimir. Maminjo is right, it’s in an old neighborhood in the heart of Zagreb, and there’s not much room for anything bigger. Construction is set to begin in March, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.

I wonder if this could lead to a future joint-bid for Euros. Maybe Croatia-Slovenia-Hungary.
Minimum stadium size for Euro matches is 30,000
Not possible 12,000 people is not good enough for UEFA event they need at least 50,000 seats 60,000 to sell out 12,000. There’s no money in that. Qualifier, you can get away with but a euro no way.
There are local high schools here in NY that have bigger stadiums
Very true
I’ll believe it when i see it.
You know that that’s going over budget right?
Longgggg overdue. It took players from the Bundesliga to comment on the stadium hahaha. Until they break ground its pure speculation
This stadium will be used by Dinamo and the national team while maksimir is being reconstructed which will commence once this smaller stadium is complete.
Not soon enough, have been waiting for new station in ZGB for already 80 years!
Rumoured capacity just 12,000? What am I missing? “Just” a rumour I assume.
Stadion Kranjčevićeva is pretty close to downtown Zagreb.
It’s right next to a neighborhood with shops and a school.
There’s limited space and I’m sure there are height restrictions in terms of what you can build there. They’re not going to build some monstrous stadium in the downtown core that overwhelms the surrounding buildings and neighborhood.
The stadium will be the home of Lokomotiva in the future (and probably some of the lower division teams like NK Zagreb and HAŠK), so a 12,000 capacity stadium is just fine for this purpose.
It doesn’t make sense. There’s something missing and I think we need another source get proper details. This is Absolute Garbage !!!!
