It’s been another great year with all of you: from watching the Vatreni duke it out with the world’s best at Euro 2012 to Croatia’s water polo team going perfect at the summer Olympics and taking gold. Heck, even the political gods were on our side in 2012 with the acquittals of generals Gotovina and Markač.
Prva Generacija has spoken. Here are your winners for the 2012 CroatianSports.com awards.
MVP
The MVP award goes to both Colin O’Haravić and Zach Gilfix this year. The two have joined the CroatianSports.com staff full time and have contributed every weekend. Colin has made the weekly HNL reports his own with amazing detail while keeping his readers updated with KHL Medveščak reports.
Not only does Zach join Denis and I every weekend with ‘Croatians Around Europe’, covering Spain and Russia, but he absolutely knocked it out of the park with his 2012 London Olympics reporting, covering every day in great detail on everything from handball and water polo to rowing and table tennis.
Thank you boys for all your hard work!
Best Personality
Whether you love him or hate him, you read his stuff. Ziva Istina is 2012’s ‘Best Personality’; but he does have company. The infamous Ante BBB and well spoken Ivica also top the list. There are numerous characters on CroatianSports everyday, but it’s these three gentlemen that brought it every time they posted in 2012. Last year’s crown went to none other than Ziva Svircina, Denis’ alter ago, who never came to pay us a visit in 2012. Will he ever return?
Best Line
You can’t have great material without a great personality. Our two best lines of 2012 come from two of our three personalities: Ante BBB and Ziva Istina. Ante BBB shared with us his thoughts on the acquittals of generals Gotovina and Markač while Ziva Istina provided some Zagreb humor.
Ante BBB: “Not only were the generals freed today but the Croatian people as a whole in perhaps the greatest moment in modern day Croatian history. Make no mistake, the Croatian people were on trial today and won. Justice finally won. Oluja was legitimate. There was no planned exodus of the Serbian population that could be categorized as a war crime nor the attacks on Grahovac, Gracac, Knin and Benkovac among many other things.”
Ziva Istina: “Hercegovina does have its own country. It’s called Zagreb!”
Biggest Bust
Photo: Aleksandar Holiga
After roasting Croatian fans for their behavior at Euro 2012, CroatianSports.com contacted Guardian freelance writer Aleksandar Holiga for a Q&A on his piece. Many Croatians were not happy with the July 8 article, but in the end, it is our responsibility to report the facts. Still, this piece came in as the 2012 ‘Bust of the Year.’
Best Moment
In a non-sports related moment, CroatianSports.com voted the acquittal of generals Gotovina and Markač from the Hague the best moment of 2012. It was a complete shock to all Croatians around the globe as the judges reversed their decision based on new found evidence.
Honorable mentions also go to the Croatia v. Spain match at Euro 2012 where the Vatreni stood toe to toe with arguably one of the greatest teams to ever play the game for over 87 minutes. Croatia was one Ivan Rakitić header away from dethroning the champs, but it wasn’t meant to be. Croatia’s 7-medal performance at the 2012 Olympic summer games in London also makes the list, where Sandra Perković (discus), Giovanni Cernogoraz (trap) and the men’s water polo team all took gold.
The Wedding of Ante BBB
On a personal note, my ‘Best Moment of the Year’ goes to the wedding of Ante BBB. Receiving an invitation due to the relationship you have built because of CroatianSports.com from your hated rival (Dinamo Zagreb) speaks volumes of how far our little website has come. That, and the fact that there were more Hajdukovci than Dinamovci at his wedding.
Also, GoldenChild being so sure of himself that Dinamo Zagreb WILL play in Europe past the winter break was humorous to me.
You are this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herzegovinians

Istina Boli!!!!!!
Note of what……I agree with what the good doctor said.
ENGLISH PLEASE
Thank you Doktor Prie. Hopefully loud mouths like Ziva and Nije Bitno will take note of the above.
Doktore I usually slap this song on partizani like veliki kreten.
@ Veliki kreten – UZIVAJ! 😉

Usput budi receno, sto ce vama crkve sto ih Hercegovci navodno “dijele” – kad vi u crkvu niste isli do ’90?
Majku vam vasu podlu i pokvarenu. 😀
Vidi pickica kako psuju i laju…
Majku vam vasu nepismenu, jugoslavensku. Jos ljubite Tita i cuvate partijske knjizice vasih starih…
Nepismeni ste i ne znate nista o hrvatstvu; nista o hrvatskoj povijesti, kulturi, jeziku, zemljopisu…. jer ste do ’90-e listom bili Jugoslaveni.
Kapute mozete preobuci; zastave promijeniti; ali cinjenice su cinjenice… i to ne mozete promijeniti. Boli vas. I neka vas boli.
TO Prle from one nepisme to another

Why am i nepisme all i said was that hercegovina is in BIH not in Hrvatska its not called HiH!
@ Prle ajmo kolo plesati hercegovian scum lets go dived churchs and sing jure and boban Mrs u pitcku materinu veliki hrvati ste svi Cigani
Ill take your word for it.
I dont know. I havent been back since ’05 so maybe iv subconsciously chosen not to remember those things.

Then open your eyes when you travel (or you might chose to ignore it and that is why you don’t see it). The enemy and scum (serbs) have infiltrated croatian territory with their music. And in return, our people are listening to their crap. This is not just hercegovina, but all over.
@Ziva
I think i know where I’ve been.
@nije bitno
brother I was also being sarcastic, all fun 🙂
boring day at work
It definitely isn’t the same without him at the Cro functions
D. Dabo , San Pedro misses you . Ziva , you make no sense most of the time , so leave the Beautiful People of Split alone . Hajduk, & Torcida 4 Life .
@poglavnik…….then you have not been to hercegovina if you haven’t seen posters/signs for serb singers at various clubs/bars. The hercegovci love serb music as does much of hrvatska. Hercegovci loves serb music almost as much as they love stolen mercedes-benzes.
Dr. Prle is right about Split….but, then again the people of Split have never made sense.
That sure is D. Dabo!
Anonymous – chill bro i was being sarcastic! whos trying to be the tough guy now? If you have a problem then say you have one and we can squash it one way or another until then NEZANIMLJIV SI. Thats not me “trying” to be tough, thats me being real.
D. Dabo Rules
@nije bitno
first you throw a hissy fit everytime Ziva posts and now you are a little school girl laughing at his post, come on man give it a rest, you are looking foolish
And to be fair, it can be hard to discern what exactly is originally Croatian and what isn’t. Especially since Croats have the nesreca of being nepismeni as a whole; and the Serbs being barbaric usurpers and thieves when it comes to culture. And, of course, it doesn’t stop with culture.
The point being, it doesn’t help when most Hrvati are illiterate when it comes to their own culture and history,
We had a prime example in 19Tornado65 and his illiterate words. That’s just scratching the surface.
Here’s a prime example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdkVCam-ZMY
This is a classic Croatian narodna pjesma from Hercegovina. I’ve met many a nepismeni Hrvat that believes this is a Serbian song. Albeit, the Serbs DO have their own rendition. But they have their own rendition of EVERYTHING.
And I’m talking about hard-core Serbian garbage. I’m not referring to Croatian narodne from the mentioned regions that are played to an accordian.
On the flip-side, many nepismeni Hrvati think that the accordian is exclusively a Serbian instrument – and that anything including the sounds of an accordian is by default “Serbian.”
Thank you Doktore!
I was gonna mention how thankful i am that my family don’t expose me to that crap!
Practically all of Croatia is infected by the Serbian crap…. Calling out Hercegovina is unfair. Zagorci, Prigorci, Podravci, “real” Zagrepcani, Istrani and others are some of the WORST offenders when it comes to Serbian cajke.
Poglavnice,
That would mean that your cousins still have self-respect and decency.
I’ll bet Ziva’s mom’s house that his entire family in Croatia listens to “narodnjake.”
It is one of the strangest phenomenons in our recent history.
The Dalmatian hinterland is on par with West Hercegovina when it comes to the “cajke.” No better, no worse. As for the coast, Split is, as Vuco correctly stated, is the capital of “narodne.”
“Narodne” being a misnomer altogether… but for some strange reason, many Croatians, unwittingly or not, refer to Serbian turbo-folk as “narodne.” Another absurdity of the nepismeni Hrvati…
@Doktor Prle
Fair enough. Thankfully my rode have never exposed me to that shit when im there.
EDIT: At least a decade.
For the sake of honesty and objectivity, it is true that the said areas of West Hercegovina are hot-beds for Serbian music-listeners. It’s been the case for decades. The clubs in the area have not only hosted the most bizarre of Serbian entertainers, but they play the music in clubs and cafes on a regular basis.
The one, the only, in the flesh.
Was that D. Dabo on that boat cruise video?
Ante B , no good
Visit Istra boys and relax with a Favorit!!!
Enjoy plava i zelano Istra!
@Ziva
Im very familiar with those areas and thats news to me. Thats funny that youve never met a good Hercegovac and you don’t have any Hercegovci as friends, yet you claim to know these things how?
Stick to knowing things you’re familiar with like your moms basement instead of spreading your bullshit about Hercegovina.
@Poglavnik….cool…..I guess you are not from the Ljubuski/Siroki Brijeg/Posusje area. Those places love the serb music.
Happy New Year!!
Congratulations Colin O’ Haravić and Zach Gilfix!!
Interesting wedding …result 14-22
Best Moment forever 16.11.2012. ♥
I just can’t help but laugh.
@Ziva
Not the parts I know of. You wouldn’t find a Serbian cat in the selo’s I’m talking about!
@Poglavnik says:
Hercegovina, home of the Veliki Hrvat! All other regions wish they were as pure as the south west of Hercegovina!
Does that include the areas throughout SW Hercegovina that host serb singers throughout the year?
I dont know how many of you guys are familiar with this photo and if your not shame on you. But since this is a Croatian sports site i thought the added grbs of dinamo and hajduk were pretty cool.

Hercegovina, home of the Veliki Hrvat! All other regions wish they were as pure as the south west of Hercegovina!
There’s actually tons of them that work on the piers in Pedro.
And yes so that the CSR Faithful know, I too have to stand in line opposite from you. I don’t think Medugorje is a hoax but I will agree with you that many have made a business from it in the actual town that could care less about what actually happened.
got you……..
wait a minute………..there are hard working dalmatinci? Could I ahve been wrong? Damn, maybe medugorje is real afterall?
Ziva,
I was referring to your earlier comment about good, hard working Dalmatinci and posteni hercegovci. Not loose women although I’m sure LA is full of them but not the Croatian variety.
Nije Bitno,
Maybe but for now I’m like his second son and he’s second Tata.
@Ante B………..I’ve just booked my ticket to California to seek and greet these “loose” women you speak of.
@ Ante – Hes your in law for now but in a few years you might be calling him your outlaw. Not cause hes a hercegovac but i heard it just becomes that way after years of marriage.
Ziva,
I disagree. To answer your question: you can find them both in the dijaspora, especially in California. I know a lot of good Hercegovci in LA (they basically built the city). And of course my father in law whose mustache alone lives in infamy.
Sarcasm button: I actually disagree with Ziva Istina. When he’s right, he’s right. When he’s wrong, he’s wrong. He’s a big boy who can take care of himself.
I can only imagine the amount of butchered croatian language that will be spoken on that cruise. “khakooo seee”
Good idea, but croatian girls are not really known for one-night hook ups, which I guess is a good thing if someone is wife shopping, but not a good thing if looking to have fun that weekend or looking to get away from the wife/girlfriend.
On another note. If anybody is interested in meeting new Croats and partying with them checkout this website and take it into to consideration. This will be my first year going so i cant really say if its worth the trip or not, but a bunch of my friends have went and they said it was a blast.
http://www.croatianscruise.com
lol you see, i don’t disagree with Ziva everytime he posts. That last one was hilarious! LMAO! good one 😉
got to love internet tough guys……
by the way, if anyone really wants my jock, you can send me a message on my twitter account and I will send you a signed jock. I’ve yet to fully embrace twitter, but I’ll keep a look out for any requests.
*rap
poor Hercegovci get such a bad wrap on this site hahahah
FALA BOGU JA SAM ISTRIAN
hahhaa 😀
It’s not every time he comments it’s just when i disagree with him. Thats what this websites about right? Or is this website about lets see who jocks ziva more? like yourself! they should give out an award for biggest Ziva jock, that would be you all day big boy.
@nije bitno
come on, if you have balls you wouldn’t throw a hissy fit everytime Ziva comments on something, try to chill for 2013, get some confidence and enjoy the website 🙂
not tough just have balls buddy, try growing some 2013 🙂
@ nije bitno
Here we go again, good old nije bitno being a tough boy. Just because Ziva says it the way it is you go in a little hissy fit. Try to relax for 2013 it will do wonders for you.
@ Anonymous – If you been here that long to know how Ziva takes care of himself and you still go by the name of Anonymous, your not worth my time bitch ass coward.
but the question needs to be asked……..who are the good hercegovci? Does a good hercegovac actually live? In my travels I have looked high and far for a good hercegovac, a hercegovac all of us can call “friend”, but I am still searching for one.
What will be found first: a good, honest hercegovac or a hard-working dalmatinac?????
@19Tornado65, you would be better off without all of the generalisations. Not one nation is ALL good or ALL bad for that matter…
I am pretty certain that every province in Croatia has an abundance of good people with a few bad, as well.
IMHO, Hercegovci are pretty cool people, but a couple of bad apples spoil the bunch, for some people. I like to focus on the good ones…
For my friend 19Tornado65:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ9mnFQ9eJQ
A sad, adio…
Puppet Ziva
@nije bitno
Don’t worry about Ziva. He can take care of himself, he always does. Worry about yourself.
Lijep pozdrav svima. Vidimo se za jedno dva mjeseca….
and yet you respond to the clown.
Ziva = Clown
Ziva don’t need any help…………I win when I state the truth.
Besides, I like this Dr. Prle character. Too bad part is that half the clowns can’t understand him when he writes in croatian.
Ziva Seronja is a catchier handle than Puppet Suker, etc. Bravo Doktore!
looks like doktor prle has the lead on ziva for this years best personality. Just wondering where is all of zivas help? when prle starts ripping him your nowhere to be found…..
@ Doktor ma unlike hercegovci i dont need to prvu this veliki hrvats stuff so in the words of vuco BOLI ME KURAC JA VOLIM SAMO SEBE!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0FpuUIbOdo
YouTube: Tomislav Ivcic + Siroki Brig. Majmune, neodgojeni i nepismeni!
@ Prle I was a war child and sang songs like Boze cujvaj Hrvatsku and Mojoj Majci, the truth hurts!
ENGLISH PLEASE
@Doktor Prle……….ajde stari, pa ja zivim u maminom podrumu. Ona mene voli!!!!!!
Kao sto je reko najveci filozof D. Zagore – Sinisa Vuco – AKA General Vasilije Mitu (vjerojatno i rodjak od Zive Seronje):
“Vise volin da me mrzis kakav jesan nego da me volis kakav nisan.”
@ Prle
Tebe mora da svi volu?????????????? Sve znas……….
Bravo Doktore!
Tebe ni tvoja mater ne voli…
Onda sam ti ja “najdrazi”
Meni su “najdrazi” -Hrvati- koji odradjivaju posao za hrvatske neprijatelje (Srbi, novo-bosnjaci i druga smeca)…
Pozdrav i tebi.
welcome back Doktor Prie, you have been gone awhile
always love your input
@19TORNADO65
@Doktor Prle
Excellent job as usual!
People, how out of touch are you?
That’s what you elected line of the year? A stale joke that has been recycled for at least 19 years and that Ziva Istina (vlajcina iz D. Zagore) has rehashed to you unwitting fools?
Cestit Bozic sa zakasnjenjem i Sretna Vam Nova Godina.

@Crippler
dont think so
Gotcha. Thats a bit before my time
Did any of the Mahovilic bros play in minni?
Former NY Ranger and Miracle on Ice gold medalist Mark Pavelich is of Croatian descent and grew up in Minnesota.
Happy New Year to all I Bog, Hrvati, Dinamo, HNL Champions!!!
Happy New Year to All ! Bog,Hrvati,Hajduk, i L.A. Galaxy Champions !!!
Not sure who you’re thinking of, but were called the “state of hockey” so I dont know who the top rated player is/was. Phil Housley is probably the best from Minnesota.
You might be thinking of Joe Sakic, who spoke Croatian but played for Canada but he never played here so idk
@ Zack, isn’t the top rated hockey player in Minnesota’s history a Croatian guy?
On second thought, looks like he does play for Croatia
@Colin
Andy Sertich. He went to a tiny high school here and then was at the U when they won the national championship. He has eligibility to play for Croatia, so not sure if he doesnt want it or they dont want him
@Denis, wow huge congrats to you bro!!!!!
As always, kudos all around to the entire CS team, Brane too!!!
I U NEBO S NJIM I U PAKAO BBB I DINAMOOOOOO
SRETNA NOVA MENI LOVA
Sretna nova decki, evo meni pijan ki kantu, al samo da recim, ante bbb hajduk zivi vjecno prijatelju!!!!
Happy N Y
love the site, keep it up
So easter is on 31.3.13 this year i hope our strikers dont give up scoring golas for lent we play 2 key games in March.
Thank you team Croatian Sports for the job well done.
Thank God for the interesting personalities on this site.
Happy and prosperous New Year to all!
Best wishes to NT and Hajduk in 2013!
Where are the party’s tonight , in the L.A. Area ?
Thanks, Zach. You did such a killer job on the Olympics too. Wish that was year round.
Barring they find some big time sponsors, Medvescak should be joining the KHL next year. And don’t hold your breath on the future of the nat’l hockey team. Cro just finished dead last with zero points in Div 1 of the world junior tourney this week. It will take some time to develop real on ice talent.
Who’s the player from MN on the team?
Thanks guys for a great year and all your hard work!!! Colin, I love reading your Medvescak reports. Theres a guy who’s from MN and played in college here on the team. Hope they get into the KHL next year and hopefully the national team can win their group in April and move into division 1
me three
Mandzukic voted Croatian player of the year

Me too.
I miss the locks buddy! 🙂
Holiga…..
I dont know why everyone was turned off by Holiga. Just a different perspective from someone born and raised in Croatia. Don’t get offended so eaaaaaaaaaaaasily.
Josipovic….
Same thing. Dude is the president of the republic of Croatia. Why wouldn’t we interview him? Interviewing him and Holiga doesnt mean we support him or support their views.
I think both were successful interviews. Holiga getting trashed on the website. Josipovic saying that there is mafia in croatian sports and wanting the national team to play around the country(which happened right after the interview).
@poglavnik,
““Got engaged, a full-time job, and a mortgage”
Hence the haircut, huh?”
Everyone says that. I’m not a mandilon(spanish).
Haircut was for the job buddy boy. CS.com and 25 cents would buy me a bag of chips.
.
Woah, MVP? I didn’t even prepare a speech. Thanks. That’s pretty cool. Really glad people read the HNL report and still care about the league. Can’t wait or the season to start back up and continue writing.
In the meantime, I’ll continue the updates on Medvescak. Got to get your hockey fix somewhere!
@Crippler – Good man!! Huge Pens fan. I need to update that picture though. I look 15 haha.
Congrats on the awards boys. Job well done. Also Colin O’Haravic love the Pens hat.
@ Ante BBB,
Don’t worry. I’m ageless. I got things under control around here…
As far as your wedding goes, the proof is in the pudding buddy…there’s not much more to say…
And thank you for making my job easy…2013 Line of the Year nomination:
“For those of you who enjoy what I have to say, it’s appreciated and will continue. For those of you who don’t, I encourage you to eat a gigantic bowl of kurac while reading this site (read: jugos).”
I would like to thank you all, especially Prva Generacija, for the votes. I have developed my own little niche here and it is nice to be recognized. For those of you who enjoy what I have to say, it’s appreciated and will continue. For those of you who don’t, I encourage you to eat a gigantic bowl of kurac while reading this site (read: jugos).
I completely agree with the choices for Colin and Zach being MVPs. They bring the content, enough said. I read the HNL reports and Dinamo updates and am completely satisfied. You gentlemen are both doing a great job. Please keep it up for 2013. You guys are the future of this site and I open that up to all young perspective people who want to contribute to this site. We are getting older and with that comes life changes which sometimes put sports on the back-burner. This site needs younger guys and gals who have the same passion we do for Croatian sports.
In terms of the most important line and moment of the year, it’s true–nothing can top Govotina and Markac. Croatians are the definite winners of the Domovinski Rat…now and forever. We can tell our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren da smo pobjednici a ne zlocinci. On a personal note, I would have to agree with Kvartuc that my wedding was the highlight of my year. Some of you liked it, some didn’t and the rest of you could care less. Unlike Ante, however, I know there were more dinamovci; he just interviewed literally the only dalmatinci and San Pedro people.
Can’t wait for 2013
Bog i Hrvati
Za Dom Spremni

@Armada87
Social media can be a wonderful thing. The public aren’t as blind as they used to be!
@Denis
“Got engaged, a full-time job, and a mortgage”
Hence the haircut, huh? 🙂
Keep up the great work boys!
It’s much appreciated.
You’re site is awesome!
“I believe in the republicans/conservative approach (until the last few years)”
Good move, that’s been a sinking ship for years now. The entire party has to revamp itself cause they just aren’t appealing to the public like they use to…
Well done boys…..
Regarding holiga, I am on the opposite end. I don’t mind hearing from a different view point. It’s no different than me turning on MSNBC or reading the NY TImes, even though I believe in the republicans/conservative approach (until the last few years). In fact, I would reach out to Holiga again……why?????? Because I bet it would be one of the most read and most commented articles.
As the year comes to end I would like to say happy new year to all good hrvati.
Sretna Nova Godina svima.
Keep up the excellent work guys just don’t bring Holiga back under any circumstances. We don’t need that Jugo trash.
@Ante B great line, you said it the best regarding Gotovina
@Colin, thank you for you all the reporting you do on the HNL
thanks to croatiansports for a great year and all the hardwork the writers put in! the website has really come a long way, is a great way to bring croats and sports fan together, and an even better way for me to kill time at work!
final note: a poor decision to include a 1-0 loss to spain as a runner up for highlight of the year. as hrvati, we aspire big even if our country is small. keeping dreaming big in 2013!
Well done Ante K on the winter break posts while my lazy Dalmatinac ass is already in hibernating mode.
It has been an interesting past four months for me to say the least. In the past 120 days or so I got engaged, a full time job, and a mortgage.
Besides the usual Croatians Around Europe, I haven’t had much time to contribute to the website. I’m not sure whats in store for me in 2013, but I do know that my time will be limited.
Ante K has done a wonderful job keeping the website interesting. Colin O’Haravić and Zach Gilfix are co-MVP’s of 2012. Matt Lebo has been there for us every time the website went down. Crippler hasn’t been around much probably because of his wife and kid. but he still finds the time to chime in every time there is a big fight. Brane picked up a job downtown but still checks in every now and then to share one of his great ideas(or one of his ridiculous ideas).
I still enjoy reading all of your comments. I will never sell out and I will never kiss anyone’s ass(even Ziva Istina). Some of you do have homer glasses on before you type.(I am guilty of this as well.)
We do bitch at each other for so many stupid reasons, but in the end, we are capable of uniting as one as shown by the “moment of the year.”
Just remember, sports are important, but not as important as life. Some of you Hajdukovci really do believe in “samo tebe volim i vise nikoga”….
The acquittal of generals Gotovina and Markač from the Hague was more important than any sports achievement in Croatian history.
“the Croatian people were on trial today and won.” ~Ante B
I would like to wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2013. Happy new year!
