World Cup 2018 Final. Antoine Griezmann wins the free kick that leads directly to France’s opening goal. He was never touched. And don’t forget about the Perišić VAR handball call that took FOREVER to action.
Euro 2024. Croatia gets eliminated against Italy after a chaotic ending and controversial 8 minutes of added time. Referee Danny Makkelie is then dismissed from the tournament.
And now, World Cup 2026. Croatia lose to Portugal because of a sensor in the ball! Give me a break! And Espen Eskås, the referee in charge of the Portugal match has verrrry quietly been relieved of main refereeing duties, being moved to 4th official. He will not referee another match at this World Cup.
That means Croatia has had 3 referees dismissed from games we lost in the past 7 tournaments. 3 referees!!! That is a crazy statistic!!!

Olic is a failed coach who has been sticking around the HNS for almost a decade because he wants to be gifted a head coaching role. If he tried his hand at club coaching again (like he once did at CSKA), he would fail miserably and end up like Igor Biscan.
Corluka has been offered HNL positions before and he (wisely) avoided them because he knows the risk of being exposed as a fraud is real.
Dalic dropping Vuskovic means nothing. Dalic is also a poor evaluator of talent and has admitted that he uses consensus for his selections in the past.
He’s only ever called up young up-and-coming players well after the fans, media and HNS themselves call him out to do so.
The fact that Duje Caleta-Car was his first option CB (a player who Real Sociedad thought was not even worth a 3 million option-to-buy fee) says A LOT about how good Dalic’s talent evaluation skills are.

Time to move on from Dalic. He did his thing. We can debate if he was a good coach or just had good players. What is needed now is different skill set that Dalic doesn’t have and that is teaching younger players. It would be ballsy move, but I say get Modric right in to run the team. Players trust him and he will get so much out of the younger guys moving up. The time is now for Modric to be the coach. Start out with all youth and build it up again.

The first question that he was asked was if he is staying on as the coach.

If it is any consolation I don’t believe it’s anything personally against us. FIFA simply has a core group of nations who they protect for financial reasons. We are targeted and get hosed time in and time out because we both face this group of nations the most and more importantly compete/beat those nations. Egypt are a side today that can be pointed to as another nation to fall victim to the bias that FIFA has. Unfortunately most of their fans will write it off as coincidence or one bad ref. Ante as you pointed out in your numerous examples, we have been slated enough times to realize there is no such coincidence and in this a concerted effort from FIFA. How Perisic, and Modric evolved, to remain relevant revelations in 2026 was awe inspiring, and they were open to changing their roles for the good of the team.
Contrary to others, because of this, I would rather stay with status quo, rather than a single expensive foreign coach, ideally, I feel, it would be optimal if we could continue to be internally coached, in the future, by the existing fraternal committee style method, by our best historical players, with someone serving as the overall “Zupan” who brings it all together, the Croatian way, modified for the current existing talent. Each assistant coach would focus on their strength, but with more specific delegated responsibilities that they are ideally suited for. Concurrently, the assistant coaches pass on the best Croatian national values.
The Zupan would have reduced pressure and hopefully reproach, and not have as much pressure regarding final tactics, recruitment, scouting, team selection, with a more delegated coaching support structure.
If Dalic returns, he would appreciate the ability to delegate and off-load to say Modric, Perisic or similar assistant coaches, which would bring varied unique knowledge sets to the table, and diversify the expert pool.
The Zupan would be a stable position with less reproach, with the assistant coaches having to take the brunt of the fan visceral criticism.
Would (Dalic, Bilic, Kek, etc,) in the future be open for a pay cut, within a broader base shared leadership style structure, to allow for more coaching support sources.
A Zupan would be a good cultural representative, as well as a leader of assembled assistant coaching staff.

This sport is set up to be too easily determined by referee bias or error. The balance of power needs to be re-set.
My suggestion: They should make the goals 4′ longer and 2′ taller so as to disadvantage the goalie, and advantage the attacker, so that the average score of a game is 10 + goals on a regular basis. 1-0, 1-2 should be an anomality rather than a ruled.
Also replace offsides definition to having your complete body past the defender.
A goal should not be an anomaly, but a regular normal occurrence every 10 minutes, for skilled players. No one officiating call is less likely to determine the outcome.
Additionally, less skilled bunkering teams beating better skilled teams on a regular basis, would be less common.
The current set up is like pickleball to tennis. There is not much difference between Janik Sinner and Joe Smith down the street, if it is determined over a game of pickle ball, rather than tennis and can be easily manipulated.

The premise for your argument ignores Croatia’s overturned goal which is the prime example of favoritism towards Portugal over Croatia. It also ignores the disparity in fouls called against Croatia and for Portugal. You also chose to disregard that the penalty was something that is very rarely called. Every corner in the tournament has a 15 person wrestling match.

The big teams aren’t scary anymore and walk over anyone. That’s the positive take from this World Cup. You have Cape Verde almost bringing Argentina to penalties, Paraguay beating Germany, England almost blowing the lead against Mexico. Small teams can compete and getting stronger. We won’t get any calls in our favour. That’s the reality and we must accept it. I’m sure other teams have repeated what we have said. The question is how we address it? Boycott each tournament?

Ref gives a penalty to the Czechs after VAR review (same Italian VAR asshole who was a VAR official for the 2018 final, how convenient). No way was that a penalty. And even in 2022, in the 3rd place game, Gvardiol gets tripped in the box, a clear penalty, and VAR didn’t even look at it. So it happens every tournament.
