There is civil unrest in Catalonia.
To quickly catch you up, Catalonia has been an autonomous community of Spain. Catalans consider themselves Catalan and not Spanish. They even have their own language. It is somewhat similar to Croatians’ past relationship with Yugoslavia- minus the fighting.
Catalonia has tried to become an independent nation for nearly 100 years, however, they have peacefully gone on with their business as a piece of Spain.
Earlier in the week, the Catalans voted 90% on a referendum which would give Catalonia independence from Spain. The Spanish government have stated that even a vote was deemed unconstitutional.
Now, I’m not here to talk Spanish politics with you. So why the article?
Should Catalonia break off from Spain, what happens to FC Barcelona?
Barcelona are arguably one of the best four sides in Europe every year. If they reside in an independent nation with no league, where would they go?
ESPNFC writes if Monaco can play in France, why can’t Barcelona?
On top of that, Barcelona and the other two Catalan La Liga clubs, Girona and Espanyol, have gone on strike during the international break due to protesting.
What will happen in the upcoming month? And how will Spain’s football federation react?
Barcelona and Spanish defender Gerard Pique is already seeing the brunt of it.
@Idemo, 1st you said: “The gist of Catalonia wanting to break off is that they think they pay way too much to Madrid in tax, which they do, but they also make the most in the country.”
then you said: “what does a average Catalonian have to gain from independence? When it’s fairly certain they’ll suffer economically if they break.”
Talk out of both sides of your mouth much moron?
And you’re still wondering why they’re declaring independence WHEN I ALREADY TOLD YOU MORON?
@Idemo, you’re a fucking moron. The word extreme doesn’t mean unique or rare, so the fact that “this won’t be the first nor last time there’s a separatist movement” doesn’t mean it isn’t an extreme move, especially when you know it could turn violent. And to me “extremist” isn’t necessarily a bad word; the founders of the united states were called “extremists” when they started demanding independence from Britain. Understand now?
You said: “I am 2 years younger than you. I am a completely different person I share no common identity with you”
What the fuck does that mean moron? That’s an example of someone who can’t deal with what I’m saying, is too stupid to actually respond to what I said, so you just throw some bullshit out of left field to compensate.
Of course you missed my point. 1st you said they’re declaring independence b/c “they don’t want to pay high taxes”. LOL! Then you tell me that “Catalon is a language”.
Didn’t you read what I said moron? Catalonia is a region of Spain that unlike most of the rest of the Iberian peninsula was NOT under Muslim rule for over 700(SEVEN HUNDRED) YEARS so they are a different people from the rest of Spain, that’s why they want independence: b/c they are a different people. It sure looks like their identity is not Spanish, it’s Catalonian -that’s their common identity. Get it yet moron?
You also said: “Why does Barca get to blatantly go against the constitution?
LOL! Is that a serious question? I’ll answer it this way: the Soviet Constitution allowed for any nation within it to leave the Soviet Union if they wanted to. But the REALITY for a long time was if anyone tried they’d be crushed. The Soviet Constitution had NOTHING to do with the fact that every nation within it eventually did declare independence. LOL!
Catalonia situation now reminds me a lot about the beginning of Croatia’s struggle for independence. Elections, then federal police, then military intervention to “keep the peace”…
I really hope Catalonia will become independent. Fuck those whores in Madrid, they’re just like the serbs, trying to keep their milking cows and someone to oppress. Only difference is, Castilians are cleanly shaven and sober…and they don’t wear those funny hats, nor do they impregnate their cousins….
^ ^
That name says it all.
To be fair if we were still Jugoslavia we would be winning trophies left and right, although Croatia is a very strong team it’s slowly going down in talent and if we were still together as jugoslavia imagine what we could do in sport, and in the world in general
That’s my point. Nothing is wrong with it, but many will not support it. Coincidentally (sp) the same many seem to be supporting Catalonia to break off.
That point can be counterproductive as well, what does a average Catalonian have to gain from independence? When it’s fairly certain they’ll suffer economically if they break. #bruisedEgos
My issue is more with the hippie liberal douche PC loving people screaming freedom as if these people are being killed.
The left is jumping on this more than the Rhoyinga issue
Old men in suits decide when young boys in uniforms will die.
@Idemo
What’s wrong with the Southern US deciding to break free?
If they want to go, let them go. What’s the benefit to you that they are forced to stay with the rest of the US?
Same goes for French-speaking Quebec. Every decade there is talk of another referendum. But if they finally decide to split from Canada, let them do it.
I can understand why an elitist or a corporation would want these lands to remain together (as there are significant benefits to this for them) but I don’t get what an average person should even care at all (yet we are the ones who’s blood is shed in these battles).
SAUDI ARABIA SPREADS IT’S POISION

Next to go is Northern Italy and then Herzeg!!!!!!
@ Idemo
There were those that were denying Croatia her right to leave Yugoslavia to.All people have a right to self-determination and nationhood. The EU sendsIn her police force to beat old women but do nothing when a Muslim horderapes. This is the EU? As far as Franco it was good that he beat the internationalCommunists however he punked out. During the Great War our brothers wereFreezing and dying on the Eastern front. Franco decided to stay neutral. Fuck him.
I mean that culture and langauge argument can be applied to let’s say the state of Mississippi? Let’s support the south rising again and breakin off if wer going to support Catalonia.
Carles Puigdemont is a communist for sure, they’re the only people that would support Catalonia breaking away from a Catholic majority in Spain.
Anyway if Catalonia does gain independence that would mean that Croatia beat two countries combined at the last Euros! And we did without Mandzukic, Modric, Vida and Strinic!

I like Spain and Spanish people.
I actually love the connection and friendly rivalry we have with them in sports like football, basketball, waterpolo, handball and even futsal.
We always seem to find each other in these tournaments (as we are the only two countries that are ranked top 15 in the world in these sports) and we’ve been beating them lately.
Plus, a lot of our star athletes are legends in Spain (Šuker, Prosinečki, Modrić, Rakitić, Ivano Balić, even Žan Tabak, lol).
I don’t want Catalonia to separate, but I would be a hypocrite if I was flat out against it. I don’t buy the whole tax and money thing as the reason they want to separate (it’s all media tricks). Their language and identity is strong. I totally understand if they want to break off. I just hope Croatia maintains good relations with both Spaniards and Catalonians because they are better than most European countries.
the Palestinian topic is complicated. the Arabs attacked Israel and lost the 6 day war. gaza has had many opportunities to settle and haven’t…its not an easy topic!
And do you think they should still play in La Liga? Should croatia have played in a jugoslavia leage if it stayed a league?
@elvis
As a Croatian why are you turning the cheek on someone who recognized you when someone wanted to kill you and take away your identity ( you were really vocal about this about turkey) in the 90s someone wanted to kill your family ( a la the Turks) and Spain stood there and recognized you, as a Croat should you not stand firm for them?
Spain in theory wanted better for croatia by supporting for Eu accession and then you turn the cheek for them
Are these two events Franco’s Spain? I think not.
Franco’s Spain and Today’s Spain 2 different houses.
Extremist? Trigger word sound the alarms. What’s extreme about this? This is not the first nor last time there will be a separtist movement.
“I am 2 years younger than you. I am a completely different person I share no common identity with you” Catalan as a language yaaaa vosotros is taught in many Spanish classes.
This will more than likely go through due to poor moves by Madrid, but why does Barca get to blatantly go against the constitution.
I bid this question to the group. What is your stance on Palestine?
@dgfhjkl, you call other people “slimy dirty rats” while posting sadistic crap? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
People do not go thru w/ such an extremist move as declaring independence over “taxes” or geography. They do it over a common identity.
That’s why you always see Wordists killing people to keep everyone “united” over a certain set of words, such as “all men are created equal”; isn’t this exactly what communism is?
Unlike most of the rest of Iberia, Catalonia wasn’t under Muslim rule for over 700 years, so they are a different people.
Think about it, if you believe “all men are created equal”, than what the fuck is independence for?
…many centuries of defending against muslims, arabs, saracens, moors and ottomans…afterwards I would shit in their mouths and tweet it on instagram.
Croats should be up in arms protesting about this and not give a fuck about fifa mafia shows, the saudi arab muslim desert rats don’t have money to fight terrorism or help muslim refugees but plenty to build stadiums (with foreign slave workers because muslims are lazy and dirty)…but the have money to build mosques in Croatia and elswhere, If I was in Crroatia I would assassinate all these dirty desert rat islamo-fascists and any of their supporters.Did we protect our country from slimy serbs just so that slimy desert muslim rats could bow sneak in through the rat hole among other slime and build their sharia castles?

Pavelic*
As a Croat did you know Spain accepted Pavlevic and his family after ww2 and that Spain recognized us in 92 and strongly supported our accession into the EU ( whole
Other can of worms)
People died in our want for independence Catalonia wants independence to keep their pockets fat. Don’t compare them to us.
As a Croat I can’t help but support their move for independence.
Za Dom Spremni!!
@Soul and Maminjo
agreed, sending in combat police to man handle old grandmas on camera is a baaaaaad look
I read a article last year but the difference in Monaco and France and Catalonia Spain is BIG.
they could vote 100% split and it will still be illegal, it’s clear as day in Spain’s constitution, no region has the right to self determination.
The gist of Catalonia wanting to break off is that they think they pay way too much to Madrid in tax, which they do, but they also make the most in the country. I think pique has grotesquely politicized soccer as a conduit for separatism. He deserves the abuse he’s getting at national team training. For the past 5 years any call in Madrid favor he has linked to political bullshit. He’s the one bastardizing football with politics.
Furthermore, these economic advantages Barca has will surely plumit should they see to break off. Barca and tourism etc etc, much of what Barca produces goes back into the Spain, should they break Spain will surely not do business with them, the European Union will be loyal to Spain and the World Trade Ordganization won’t touch them. Economically it’s a terrible move. But sure if their bruised egos need it let it. I wouldn’t allow them to play in la liga out of spite.
In summary: catalonians dont to pay taxes. Don’t let some left wing nut tell you this is about freedom. Oh Catalonia has their own dialect and culture. Doesn’t the southern portion of the USA? Should they be allowed to break of?
@ Maminjo
I am shocked on how dum that move was politically from Madrid?
@ Svima
Catalonia has a population of +7.5 million people and they are well off financially.
Barca brings global awareness to their plight. The same way our 90’s team did for Croatia.
Fascinating how powerful football is politically.
I am curious to see how this all will unfold ?

Depending on if and how peaceful (no fighting) they split they could all still play in Spain the way Canada plays in MLS. Mind you there isn’t no where near the cultural significance of a Catalan team playing in Spain as there are Canadian teams playing in a predominantly American League. However they already play in Spain and I can’t see them fighting but you never know.
Spain fucked up big with that stupid crackdown.
If anything, they just added fuel to the fire.
Interesting that Madrid is loading up the police presence in Barcelona. It will get scary if military starts taking positions.
I wonder if Catalonia has its own army and military depots. Pretty tough to fight back with just a few cops.
Reminds me a bit of our situation in ’91.
I actually remember seeing Catalonia play an international friendly against – i think it was nigeria? many years ago and they won 4-0 or something similar, i think it was like 20 years ago give or take
