The CroatianSports.com universe is ever expanding, and on this day, we would like to introduce “BIG” Brian Subich.
So who is Brian Subich?
He’s a world ranked competitive eater stemming from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The man stands at 6’6″ and has been ranked in the top 25 on the Major League Eating circuit since 2004. Subich has qualified twice for the grand daddy of them all, Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating contest, in 2006 and 2011. It is broadcast every year live on ESPN on the 4th of July from Coney Island, New York.
Subich’s grandparents come from Pribić and Krašić (just north of Karlovac) with his grandfather coming to the United States in the early 1900’s. Pribić was once the royal hunting grounds of the Subić-Zrinski family that used to rule Croatia.
Subich follows the Croatian national football team very closely and will be watching the Croatia/Mexico match on June 23rd from Scorpio’s in Astoria, Queens, New York. Make sure to say hello to the friendly giant walking around with a Croatian flag.
Subich was crowned Papa Johns Pizza Eating Champion, downing an entire Large cheese pizza in 1 minute and 43 seconds. Other personal bests include 26.25 Nathan’s Hot Dogs, 8.4 pounds of Baked Beans, 9 feet of Cannolis in 6 mins and 11.5 pounds of watermelon.
The man can eat. And if he can win Nathan’s next qualifying event on May 24th from Charlotte, North Carolina, Subich will once again eat with the big boys at Coney Island on July 4th.
NEMA VRBA KOLIKO IMA SRBA!
NEMA VEZE MOGU I BREZE!
@ Karadžić
my mistake, sorry to hurt you and your nations feelings
how about you try this slogan on for size and let me know what you think….
SRBE NA VRBE
hvala bre!
http://gnkdinamo.hr/hr/novosti/vijesti/dinamo-pomaze-slavoniji-modri-klub-pozvao-i-navijace.html
good thing Dinamo is doing by helping out with the relief, hopefully more will as well
Good Luck Brian, i as well dont watch the competition but wherever there is a Hrvat i will be there cheering for from the bottom of my heart, keep up the good work and keep the donations coming my friend.
ziva:
i spose the difference with big joe and the floods is that with big joe it was a ban due to a corrupt organisation – fifa and so they felt rightly outraged.
with floods it is an act of nature so that outrage isnt there, u arent being unjustly treated by your fellow people so u dont get the same level of outrage.. of course the flooding is a far more worthy thing to donate to, just explaining why i think ppl were more vocal on the joe thing
yes, make a post to donate for th efloods plz, i will donate to that for sure.. cro news (on tv i mean as shown on sbs here in aus) was only about the floods yesterday and nothing else.. it’s bad
hey like jewy popusi me pisda
Kranjcar once ate 15 Big Macs and the walked over to restaurant Okrugljak (people who have been in ZG will know) and had a full meal. That, my friends qualifies him for any eating/gluttony contest.
I know strinic has critics but i like him as defender and if he had solid Lm he can push up. NK anyway likes Pranjic at that position i dont know why hes a cm/lm not lb you know i didnt want to critize but the list of 30 could have been better i know the neznalica fucked it all up but 2014 NK will just play napamet and then euro 2016 build up will begin with new young fresh blood. Based on what i read and my buddies in the HNS pletikosa srna carli lovren pranjic modric rakitic perisic kovacic Rebic Olic might be 11 vs Brazil.
Big Brian Subich good luck in the next competition. I do not watch the sport but I do support Croats competing in whatever it may be.
Good Luck
Karadzic,I will give your mother 50 dollars for a blow job…it could help out her family back home…lol
Karadzic,does serbia have a helicopter?
Armada keep those kind of comments coming its gonna get Crotiansports.com on the SPLC hatewatch front page and repulika srpska doesnt need your saved up nickles in your piggy banks croatia sends 2 helicopters TWO HELICOPTERS tht is nothing Putin sent 500 because Putin is not a fascsit sympathizer like Croatians
^ ^
That’s part of it…
I wouldn’t wish that food on my worst enemy.
@Poglavnik be honest you just were turned off because of all the meat that Brian and Koboyashi/etc are eating! 😉
@IvicA it was doubtful Strinic would start but a loss none-the-less, and a shame to happen right before the World Cup! Vrsaljko may be our cover at LB, I believe he covered LB at Dinamo even though he was RB at the time
@Brian
Respect!
And I apologize.
I’ve never watched 2 seconds of an eating competition so I’ve got no idea about the charitable donations.
Always been super turned off of things like this because of all the waste and starvation in the world.
Heard a stat a while ago that claimed half of all the food in the world gets wasted.
Can’t help but think of things like that when i see obesity and waste.
Good luck though…
@nepoznat
Here’s hoping that Strinić can be ready by June 12th.
He’s not one of our best players, but he’s arguably our only Left Back. It would be a loss not to have him start for us there, especially if Pranjić is not up to par defensively. Our only other option would be to play someone like Ćorluka or Lovren out of position in that spot. It might work, but it would be an untested experiment (unless Kovač tries it out in these prep friendlies first).
Hrvat , if We had some Fairness & truth ,i will get over it ! STOP THE MADNESS !! Bog !!!
looks like strinic might miss world cup with a leg muscle injury
@Big Brian,
You had my full support until you said “I’m a Dinamo fan.” Just kidding.
I’m not a fan of the “sport”, but I will tune in to watch you.
I agree with you that “you have to look at the big picture.” Continued success my friend.
Also, the Simunic fund was to show support, not to pay a multi-millionaire’s bill.
Ante and I are working on where to send the $3K or so that is still sitting in the CS.com bank account. We don’t want this to end up in the wrong hands.
@Vatrena Cast,
Don’t lose faith in us just yet.
Mexico loses their starting Defensive Midfielder, and we don’t have a Defensive Midfielder.
That Cro-Mex game will be interesting to watch.
Brian, well done, you are making a difference, like you said you raised awarness and something was done.
Cico, get over it, your team is awful. No excuses, stop the blame.
@ Big Brian – Nothing wrong with using one’s talents to raise money for a good cause – best of luck bratso.
Also, good to see Torcida and BBB traveling together to Slavonija to help victims. Proper firms – well done. That is what it’s all about.
Lovro:
I’ll do anything to help raise $$. If Ziva is game, so am I and I have no idea who he is or what he looks like. Maybe if you know Ziva you can handicap the match for us!
hvala Poglavnik for the link! Never want to see injuries happen right before the Cup, but at least this time it’s for an opposing team as it looks like Strinic may be out for us along with Ilicevic.
Poglavnik:
In response to your asking me to donate some food that I eat here is my response. In the past I did a fund raiser that raised $2,000 for a Soup Kitchen in my hometown by eating 50 chicken wings. Now what do you think the Soup Kitchen would rather have? Those 50 wings….or the $2,000 I raised for them? The point is…sometimes you need to think outside the box to solve problems. If packing up food and mailing it were the answer, there would be no famines in the world. The 2k I raised undoubtedly fed many more people than a lousy 50 chicken wings would. Is it unconventional? Sure it is. But guess what…it got people’s attention…raised awareness for the need of funds at the Soup Kitchen and actually raised the funds. And on another topic…Nathans Fanous donates 100,000 hot dogs every year during the Nathans contest to the Food Bank of NYC. Is that good enough for ya? Probably not…but that’s ok. Calling me a slob will surely help feed the hungry…smh.
90 min. + Not 85 !!!
http://www.espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1828240/juan-carlos-medina-world-cup-ankle-injury?cc=5901
Good news for us!
How about asking this slob to donate some of that food he eats.
I think what would raise more money is a Big Brian vs. Ziva pay per view UFC match. Who wouldn’t pay $49.99 to see that?
He’d tear his little Cevapi off and flatten him like a palachinka.
These floods are biblical in nature. Where’s Noah when you need him.
Anyway, my prayers go out to the people of Slavonija.
I donated today hope all that money doesnt go into wrong hands like the 90s war money did
I’m ok with parts of RS washing away with all that’s going on.
Too early?
@Ante B.
exactly, they only want to pick and choose what supports their arguement, they miss the bigger picture, jebiga
Brian i dont know whats worse the morons on here or the ones on shitfeats
ziva
you can use the same argument for any sport. All the millions thrown at the players/teams/owners/media that could be used to feed people.
This eating contest is going to exist, might as well have some good come from it. You can’t escape the gluttony no matter the cause but gluttony will always exist.
Is it that you guys are just picking and choosing what you wan to believe or are the facts just getting in the way?
@ziva comical to say the least.
Those funds were raised to show support and to be given to a charity. That fell through and now there’s a charitable cause. There you go.
Of course he did nothing wrong. He got caught up in the emotion, did a selfish act away from his teammates. But, people lining up to donate money to a millionaire is funny to me.
ziva, you are missing the point.
Za Dom relief was to support him, he did not nothing wrong unlike the jugo/serb crap back home which would tell you otherwise.
You should know better.
I have to admit, it is kind of comical how people were quicker to respond in their donation efforts for Suspension Joey than they are for the flooding damage.
Jocksnifffer A: “Hey man, lets donate some money to a pro athlete who has earned well over multi millions of dollars so we can help him pay his fine.”
Jocksniffer B: “Pa, ja, you right.”
Jocksniffer A: “And who knows, maybe he will individually thank all of us. Oh man, I’m getting wet just thinking about that and how he could mention my name. I may have to go put on my Suspension Joey jersey.”
Jocksniffer B: “Jesi jocksniffer!”
@ CroatianSports/Ziva,
Efforts are in place to aid the flood victims in Slavonija. If anyone would like to donate to the Croatian Red Cross, please email us at info@CroatianSports.com.
I will create a post as more information/logistics are confirmed.
Big Mac Kranjcar has a nice ring to it. No?
Ante(Zivas step dad)
I’ve always said I would retire the day after there was a Sarma eating contest! I can smell the cabage cooking now!
Ziva-hilarious!
Should Kranjcar consider joinging this “sport”?
nepoznat & Toronto Croatia:
Thanks for the kind words!
Bravo Brian.
A Dinamo fan. Wish you all the best and ignore ziva and vatrena cast.
Reuters World Cup Group A Preview: Croatia

What a shocker he’s a dinamo fan. Lol explains everything
Bro, I LOVE that answer! My family is from Zagreb and we only root for Dinamo. Good luck with your continued success and know you’ll bring the awareness going on back home to the public in the best way you can. All the best.
Ziva:
I have no problem with your criticism or your thoughts or any ridicule on this topic. If you don’t like it that’s your perogative. No one will force you to watch it or participate. In fact, no one is forcing you to continue to debate the matter here. You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion. Last I checked this is America and there are a broad range of ideas, entertainment options and things people can choose from. If you don’t like one, move along to the next.
Ante B:
I do follow Croatian soccer. And…you may not like my answer but my choice is Dinamo. Thanks for the kind words! I do know Joey Chestnut and I will see him this Saturday as a matter of fact.
well, what type of gold. White gold or yellow gold.
“Toronto Croatia,
The streets could be paved with gold…..and you guys would complain that everything is too yellow.”
That was the best explanation of the mentality of Hrvati at home and abroad I have heard in a while. Perfect, simply perfect.
Well, then send me the articles and news coverage when his exploits of stuffing his face bring money to those suffering due to the floods.
If in fact you are able to do something, then I say congrats. But, right now I think this is nothing more than a stunt to get free pub for this dude. Just imagine going back to Cro and speaking to your grandparents or older family members and explaining to them that Americans have a contest where you stuff your face full of hot dogs for a 10 minute period and try to each as much as possible (shit, include video of these people watering down their buns so it goes down faster) and then a few minutes after it takes place a “reversal of fortunes” take place and all is vomited out.
You guys can praise him. That is fine. But, you do risk getting some ridicule when you decide to publicize your gluttony exploits. Some people like it, some don’t
Good luck to our boy BIG BRIAN!
Brian, do you follow Croatian soccer? If so then the Big question, no pun intended, is: Dinamo or Hajduk? I guess Dinamo since your family is from the Karlovac area. If not, I can point you in the right direction.
As with the posters here, don’t get offended. Like all things in life, some people love it, some hate it and the majority just don’t care. Keep up the good work and beat the crap out of the Japanac!
Do you know Joey Chestnut? Dude is a local legend around here.
in case the Croatians Around Europe thread is already dead:
Holiga: Is Croatia Emerging as a World Cup Dark Horse?
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2069633-is-croatia-emerging-as-a-world-cup-dark-horse
Ziva- relax dude….sometimes our opinions don’t matter and we can learn to be less judgemental! the guy is harming no-one and in fact, he unselfishly provides awareness and support for those who need it….you gotta look at the positives sometimes!
I have tried for years to watch American football…trust me, some of my closest friends have spent hours and hours over the years explaining to me how a 7′ 350 lbs overweight dude can be called an athlete? its the same for baseball….people try to tell me these guys are athletes, they are special and that they are athletic…..I’m not sure what the difference is between a guy that can eat 60 cheeseburgers in 3 minutes or a 350 lbs man who will surely die young from diabetes or obesity because he has to be BIG to play a game where there is a stoppage in play every 8 seconds???
just because Americans love football it doesn’t mean its a sport. same goes for this eating thing….both are very unhealthy for you, I know some of the receivers are fit but many become brain damaged by the time their 35….
Vatrena cast….I just don’t get why people would argue over semantics. Like the people in the Balkans give a shit over the way someone would be raising money for them?
Would you rather Brian do nothing instead? Would that be better? Some people just love looking for things to criticize.
The streets could be paved with gold…..and you guys would complain that everything is too yellow.
This post has officially turned this site into ‘Mericansports.com
I donated to the bosnian Red Cross and I’m looking to get a few donation events started in oklahoma. I know it’s not a big market but hell it’s more than this site is doing. Way to go guys, paying a millionaires fine and promoting a guy that eats tons of food when people are starving is way more important than helping people in need. What is this site becoming? Take me back to the Croatian soccer report days. I bet you that Serbian site, whatever it’s called, has something organized.
@ IvicA
Brian will get an ‘istina’ with some relish, mustard and ketchup on top 🙂
Brian…good on you…and ignore Ziva.
Ziva….why don’t you take a look at the big picture rather then “your perception of things”.
In the end would you not agree that by Brian raising awareness and money for the cause of the flood…. far outweighs the benefits of alternately sending 1000 hot dogs over to the Balkans instead? ….because that’s what would be “gluttonously wasted” at these hot dog eating events.
The fact remains that Brian will be raising more awareness and money towards the cause then you will be……..yet somehow you feel you have the right to criticize him?
Brian….good luck with your cause…and keep it up. Don’t ever get discouraged by people who are doing less than you are to help.
good luck Brian! I usually record the nathan’s competition because it’s mind blowing to me and for the pure spectacle of it… and now I am happy to have someone to root for!
And I for one am just happy that Ziva didn’t jump down your throat (pun intended) because the workers at Ellis Island added an H to your last name when your grandfather immigrated to the US
With the way this is going, Šubić is gonna put Živa into a hotdog bun soon
good luck brian! ignore ziva. for unfrequent visitors to the site, he just likes to stir trouble
eating is a form of entertainment????????????
Jadno!!!!!!!
Slavonac
Thanks!! I’ll do my best!
although I don’t see eating as a sport I think we should accept the fact that it is a form of entertainment in some parts of the world. I’m no fan of watching darts or snooker but they seem to be televised…eating can be entertaining…especially when I see a little skinny Japanese guy swallowing 86 hot dogs in less than 3 minutes…hahaha….
good luck to you Veliki Brian!
[…] 2005 (37) September 2005 (36) August 2005 (51) July 2005 (13) Croatian Sports has a blog entry about Brian Subich, who will compete in Saturday's Nathan's qualifier in Charlotte to try to […]
Ziva No disrespect taken. It’s just two different ways of looking at things. Is Competitive Eating a sport? Well, it’s broadcast on ESPN which is considered the authority for sports in the US. And if you’d like to get literal, Websters Dictionary defines a Sport as: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. By definition it certainly meets the criteria.
I understand it may not be your cup of tea, but for others it is. Most American football fans don’t consider soccer/football a sport either. So it’s all just different points of view, one no more valid than the other.
I’ll be following up in the next day or two with my efforts in helping those affected by the horrible flooding in the Balkans.
I come from Johnstown, PA. Google it…no City in the world is more familiar with the devastation that comes from flooding and I have no doubt the people here will support my efforts.
To the guys who run this site, I’m usually the first to defend various postings as I am one who always says “let the public decide” on what is worthy of being posted or commented on.
But, not this.
This shit is not a sport.
To BIG Brian Subich…….dude, no disrespect intended. But, using gluttony to raise awareness about food banks and issues of hunger relief doesn’t make sense to me. I wish you luck, but I won’t be watching.
Ziva & Marko:
I understand your view of the bad timing of the article. However, please be assured that in the next few days you will be hearing from me regarding relief efforts across the Balkans. In past years I’ve used my eating skills to raise thousands of dollars for food banks and charities here in the US and I plan on doing just that to help those in need in the Balkans. Stay tuned! Brian
mama moja mila….. iskreno?
@ziva – agreed. Some people in Slavonia and Bosnia affected by the floods are asking for basics such as bread to eat and clean water to drink at the moment – whilst here we have a story about a gluttony contest and a US TV company showing who can eat the most hot dogs. #badtiming CSR. #reallybadtiming in fact.
Since when did eating food really fast become material for a profile on this site?
I assume most of you guys try to live the “za dom….spremni” lifestyle. It’s not my style to brag, but I make it a point to live a “za dom…spremni” lifestyle. Well, to do so means you are also a church-going human being. Friends, gluttony is a sin and should not be promoted.
We have people on this site stating we should donate to the flood victims in Cro and BiH. Well, one of the items that is needed is food. So, you want to make the case to help people get money so they have food, but want to promote some dude performing in a gluttony contest.
Maybe we should collect some money and give it to this dude to not compete at the Coney island contest.
@dannyj – the best (and least corrupt) way to help people back home after the flooding is to donate to Caritas either in Croatia or in BiH. Both Caritas organisations have their own websites where you can donate.
Your local Croatian church should also be collecting during mass this weekend (I know our church is London is doing so), and the proceeds should be going direct to Caritas for flooding and humanitarian relief.
Mama Istina would like to invite Brian around for a nice Sarma dinner. The way that Ziva and I dig into that Sarma,Brian is likely to come a distant third on the night. After dinner,Ziva can take the big fella for a tour of the basement.
oh ziva is going to have a field day with this one
hey guys lets get a fund going for the back home… not that we can’t individually donate to redcross or what not
i think it would be good to get a good size donation in the cro sports name… i think anytime we can get the site some publicity is good and of course its for a great cause…
