Dinamo Starting XI: (3-5-2): Livaković – Ristovski, J. Šutalo, Perić – Moharrami, Mišić, Ivanušec, Ademi, Ljubičić – Oršić, Petković
If you would have told me Dinamo would be sitting 2nd place in Champions League group stage after playing Chelsea and AC Milan, I would have called you crazy. But that’s the way it stands as Chelsea and Red Bull Salzburg played out a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge Wednesday night. After beating Chelsea 1-0 in Zagreb last week, Dinamo’s match versus AC Milan at San Siro should have been considered a bonus game being played with house money. A victory would have been miraculous. A draw should have exceeded all expectations.
Instead, a penalty kick right before halftime opened the floodgates in a 3-1 AC Milan win over Dinamo.
Dominik Livaković was not at fault for any of the three Milan goals. That’s always good. Mislav Oršić simply can’t stop scoring in big European matches. He has both of Dinamo’s goals in Champions League this year. And the jury is still out on Bruno Petković in my opinion.
At the end of the day, AC Milan were the better team start to finish even though Dinamo bottled their efforts for the first 44 minutes. Dinamo can’t be too mad on the day as they trailed Milan by only one goal with 30 minutes remaining in the match.
Dinamo’s next two matches against Red Bull Salzburg will define their European season. Arguably the two weakest sides in Group E, if Dinamo can grab four points from two matches versus Salzburg, they will be in prime position to finish third (for a Europa League knockout berth) or even better — Champions League Round of 16 in the New Year! Dinamo travel to Austria on October 5th with the return leg at Maksimir on October 11th.
Starting line ups coming up for nations leagues??
I see luka getting some rest this year and I feel with real dominance so far he can get less play time
This is good overall for us IMO
Lovren starts? 😉
Gvardiol hasn’t played the last couple of games for Leipzig. That may be all Dalic needs to push Lovren ahead of him.
I’m pretty much expecting Lovren to start lol
@Dannyj
“Didn’t see majers assist but really nice job on his run and finish for the goal”
Re the assist, Majer slipped through a nice ball for Terrier to run onto to score. You should be able to see it in the link below… scroll straight to 3:13

“It’s gonna be a tough one for him. It was somewhat similar to the start of the season last year for him, he was in the team somewhat and until he played for Croatia at CB and did very well, it changed his role at RB Leipzig and unleashed him.
Hopefully the same thing happens as the games for Croatia start next week.”
@Markus Rajic: Yeah may our sacred checkers have the same effect on Gvardiol again!
The through ball where Majer scored was a horrible one. Instead of slipping it through, it was hammered. Very lucky the goalie hesitated. Neuer, Ederson, and most goalies would have rushed out and collected or cleared the ball 10m before Majer made his first touch.
But a well done finish from majer
Let’s hope he is on his game in Qatar
It could be a proper coming out party for him(no homo)
Agreed. Fantastic finish.
Lovro Majer is a beast – but you guys already know that 😉
Didn’t see majers assist but really nice job on his run and finish for the goal
Question
What’s gong on with majer?
Seems quiet so far this year
Has a goal and an assist today. Playing fantastic in Europa League action.
He broke his nose early in the year, misses two weeks! He’s been playing with a face mask, and has looked lively in the season.
He also has had a lot of uncertainty leading up to the trade deadline, hopefully he’s settling in now!
How can we get petko to do what he did on that goal for the repka regularly?
It’s really something else when he turns 3-4 guys inside out
Is it just work ethic? Cause he has shown over and over these skills so it’s not luck
Guys have up and down years.
Lucky for us, it seems like this is an “up” year for Petković.
Hopefully he continues to play like this and can bring something at the World Cup.
let yourself be the judge and tell me this was a penalty for Milan:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3badIzcAuOU
at 3:58 of this highlite reel you see Sutalo jump in front of Leao and Leao sticks his leg out. From another perspective….ask yourself if nobody touched nobody on that play, who would have easily won the ball? Sutalo would have…and easily…so how could the foul be on him when he had the advantage to win the ball!?
Yes. At 3:48 you can see that Leao just swung his left leg towards the incoming Šutalo, just so he could get some contact and go down.
Leao had no intention of making a play there, other than to go down and sell a penalty.
Agree with Maminjo’s assessment.
Damn he sold the ref a good one 🙁
Ya that’s bullshit
But Dinamo showing they belong up in champions league
Good for them, good for Croatia
How was sutalo overall besides the bs penalty call?
Orsic proving he is an above average player for years now and
With rebic out of the picture deserves to play
Which Croat has been scoring more big time goals in league play the past couple of years??
Perisic maybe. We won’t count midfielders in this
He seems very confident and under control. Technically gifted too (which is what I like to see in my CBs).
Surprised that he’s only 22 and hasn’t even played a full professional season yet in the 1.HNL.
He looks like he’s been playing first team football against European caliber teams for years.
Very solid prospect. Glad that he seemingly came out of nowhere for us, especially since Duje hasn’t progressed these past few years. Šutalo’s market value has pretty much already reached Duje’s, and he will probably be on a better club within a year from now.
I think the players’ red/white kits will look better with number/match info on the front (and name/number on back obviously). Just visited nike.ca and blues only available in size small.
The home kits would have likely been better off if they just made them completely white, with checkers only on the sleeves (similar to the Euro96 all-white kits).
Seems like the white semi-circle on the chest was a Nike requirement…then we needed a white block in the center anyway (for the player number)…then they decided to just continue with the white blank areas on the bottom of the shirt too.
Should’ve just went all white on the front then, and paid homage to the Euro96 kits we wore when we blew out Denmark 3-0 back in the day.
Still wont forgive Dalic for not playing orisic spain game at euros instead of that panj rebic.
Looks like those kits are official that were posted on line
https://www.instagram.com/reel/CihNRKHDX8M/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
This video shows why there are large white sections on the home kit. You can use a projector and show videos on them. Clever multi-use design, kit AND projector screen. Nice🤣
Dalic is one of the worst coaches we’ve ever had. Lineups and formations are atrocious almost every game and our tactics are non-existent. We had 3 very capable attacking wingers during euro 21; perisic, rebic, orsic. All 3 of whom should have been getting 55-75 mins avg per game on the wing. Yet, dalic decides to play kramaric RW our first game vs england, then brekalo vs czech, and then vlasic winger against scotland. Also the sosa, gvardiol, brozo, budimir, rebic situation during euro 21, absolute disaster. Nightmare of a coach
@CiganJeCigan
100% agree with you, massively overrated because of the fairytale run in 2018. Since then, he has exposed himself for what type of coach he really is with selections and gameplay.
How ironic that we had qualified for this year’s qatar because of the likes of Sosa getting played and Gvardiol playing at CB even when we had problems with a striker, goalkeeper and underperforming or washed players. Fast forward a year, he hasn’t done anything in order to find a solution with any of those holes in the team even when there are players out there that would do a better job than most players currently with the team (Musa, Kotarski), he hasn’t considered them but instead gone with the same shit players. Dalic is the definition of Insanity because he just does the same thing over and over again and expects different results.
I was stunned when he wasn’t fired after Euro2021.
That was a disaster for us.
But I guess he’s learning and made some correct callups and selections since then.
We’ll see.
I don’t trust him still, and I still think he gets anxiety over picking younger players over the washed up vets.
I think he may be looking for any reason to start Lovren (which, to me, is a disaster) or at least continue to share minutes between our young and old backline players (preventing them from developing chemistry).
When I see the chemistry on display between Oršić and Petković at Dinamo…I’m desperate to see that on the National Team with guys like Sosa/Perišić + a tall špica striker…or a young CB pairing.
Orsic reminds me of Olic
That’s like saying Oprah reminds me of Brittney spears!
A few weeks back I mentioned that Cacic was starting Orsic on the bench and then subbing him in while he was starting Petkovic in the first 11. I’m now wondering if Cacic deserves credit for treating each of these two guys differently but getting great results from them?
Does Orsic deserve a mural?
If Oršić wins them the Red Bull Salzburg games and gets them into the Champions League knockout phase…then Dinamo has no choice but to give him a mural, raise his jersey to the rafters, retire his number, dig up the corpse of Bill Russell so he can give Oršić an MVP award, and sign him up to star in Space Jam 3 (the Monstars try and suck all the HNL talent, but they get sold by Mamić before they could even play anyone).
We would have to fire Dalić too and replace him with Čačić, because Čačić would guarantee us a World Cup title at this point.
Oršić can score and I see him playing in Qatar-
The guy has the touch
You have to say that Dinamo was a bit unlucky with the penalty, however it was a penalty as Sutalo did make contact with the foot of the attacking player. Superb goal by Orsic and assist by Petkovic. Next two matches against Salzburg coming up and Dinamo needs to be more attack minded. To stand any chance of at least coming third in the group they must win one of these matches.
Salzburg just drew Chelsea in London.
This waters down our win over Chelsea (since Salzburg has two points now) and getting 4 points against Salzburg even more critical to finishing third.
Gvardiol not starting for Leipzig again. Not good.
Yeah I don’t understand this. So much hype in the transfer window with a huge price then suddenly decides that he is happy to stay. You would think that he stayed to get a bit more playing time and reach more potential but this way he is just losing form.
We need him in top shape for the WC. Hopefully he turns things around.
I’ve got no clue what has happened. Even with Tedesco, he wasn’t starting this year but last year under him he was a regular in the team.
Sigh. Again, why the heck did Leipzig have to bring in Diallo.
Let’s hope Gvardiol gets to play on Sat, I don’t mind even if it’s at left back position.
I reckon it’s because Leipzig thought Gvardiol was going to be on his way out this last transfer window.
I don’t like Gvardiol at left-back because we don’t get the best out of him but at this point and if he would be guaranteed minutes, I would be all for him to play there cos at the end of the day, he needs minutes.
@Markus Rajic
Yeah I thought that could be a reason, but then… Diallo’s loan transfer was completed on the last day of transfer window. Also Leipzig rejected the last-minute 90M euro offer from Chelsea, when the terms of the deal were such that Gvardiol stays on for 1 more season. It’s even more bizarre when you consider Leipzig lost two right-sided defenders – Mukiele (sold to PSG) and Klostermann (long term injury), yet they chose to bring in a left-footed CB in Diallo.
https://twitter.com/_andrej45/status/1570155463890665475
After seeing the above Twitter photo, I got a hunch Modric asked Gvardiol about his playing status at some point during their conversation. It’s sad that Gvardiol still has his substitute’s vest on…
I’m totally with you i.e. don’t like to see him at left-back but man does our guy need minutes. First choice left-back Raum is no pushover though, as he’s a starter for Germany. Diallo is a starter for Senegal. Both will want to hold on to their first team place in view of the upcoming World Cup. As elcroato said, really hope Gvardiol can turn things around.
Bog i Hrvati
It’s gonna be a tough one for him. It was somewhat similar to the start of the season last year for him, he was in the team somewhat and until he played for Croatia at CB and did very well, it changed his role at RB Leipzig and unleashed him.
Hopefully the same thing happens as the games for Croatia start next week.
Anyone watching the Rangers-Napoli game? Napoli gets a penalty, goalie saves the penalty from the Polish guy, a Napoli guy scores on the rebound. VAR shows the scorer left early. So they retake the penalty. Goalie saves again from the same guy. Lol. Then 5 minutes later handball on Barisic and on the third try, with a different shooter, they score. And a Colak just came on as a substitute. Why didn’t he start?
Petkovic and Orsic did well for that goal. Petkovic with the mali nogomet turn etc. BUT up until that point, the guy lost almost every ball he was given, barely ran or shielded, anyone must be crazy if they don’t see that, I’m sorry.
The defence of AC Milan was too much for them, as well as the midfield. I wouldn’t blame that on Petkovic alone. The entire team struggled.
I agree partially. They came out with a little too much bunker, sitting back but in all fairness they almost had it for the first 45 minutes until the penal which I thought was a little soft. I do think his (Petkovic’s) hold up game was attrocious, was pushed off the ball far too much.
Fucken Jabari, would pay any amount to beat us jebiga this is a Fix
Žabari
Jebiga, dinamo was doing well, had a few defensive errors, a poor penalty call, and now their down 3-1.
I don’t think it was fixed dude. Dinamo came out swinging, and that was a great play by both Petko and Orsic but AC Milan were clearly the better team, stats don’t lie. They held possession through pretty much the entire match. Call the penalty what you want, I think AC Milan was winning this either way.
Your starting to sound like the Hajduci!!! Lol
I expected AC Milan to take this game the way that they have been playing these past couple of seasons, they have become a team for contention. But Dinamo surprised me with that goal I thought they might actually get back into this game.
I have to say that I see Slavonac’s point about Orsic and Petkovic after this game and the last one against Chelsea. They are shaping up to be great players and have a great partnership going there.
Dinamo still has an opportunity in this tournament either way, based on the results of the first match.
We will have to see how the rest of this tournament goes. Either way I was really impressed by some of the players on this Dinamo Sutalo, Petkovic, and Orsic. They also played with a lot of grit.
“This” Petkovic is awesome…the lazy Petkovic is brutal and disappointing!
I’m not delusional…I don’t think dinamo were the better team today. I just meant to say they were doing pretty well against a European giant, and got a bit unlucky with the penalty. The second half wasn’t as good, but they scored a great goal, and they had moments where they could have caused an upset. You can’t make any defensive errors against these big clubs, otherwise you will be punished. The difference against Chelsea was they didn’t make any major defensive errors, and held on to a clean sheet. Maybe they could have escaped with a draw if the penalty wasn’t called? Who knows.
Josko on the bench again
Yeah saw that JB. Is Gvardiol banged up or something?
Oršić combines with Petković again for a fucken beautifully worked goal!
Those two need to play at the same time for us in Qatar.
As jokers off the bench or whatever.
Unfortunate penalty for Livakovic, cannot really blame him for that one. The header was nicely taken but it squeezed by him, I feel like he might have been able to get that one, but again it was a nice clean header.
Really nice pass by Petkovic and again the pairing of Petkovic and Orsic proving to really work for Dinamo.
This is shaping up to be an interesting match!
Not watching it but sadly Milan got one on the pk
What’s the amount they make for champions league knockout stage vs Europa?
Europa knockout Would be a super good placing if can do that
Obviously champs league would be amazing
I think they get 10 million Euro if they progress to R16 knockouts.
Not sure what they get for Europa.
Milan gifted a penalty.
Watch the replay and you’ll see that Sutalo stepped in front of Leao and he was the one that was clipped, not the other way around! The player that’s first to the ball gets the advantage.
That call was bullshit!
Milan didn’t deserve a PK.
Milan wasn’t convincing as the heavy favorite this game. Possession was pretty even too.
You could tell they were desperate to grab anything that could give them the lead when Leao dropped like he broke his ankle to sell that PK call.
Pioli also looked nervous as the PK was being taken. Probabl saw how the game was going and didn’t want to end up like Tuchel.
Hopefully this doesn’t turn out like the World Cup Final, where the “favorites” look weak and are bailed out by the referee so to give them a goal cushion to play their game comfortably in the second half.
Prediction: 1-1 Draw..Ibrahimovic, Rebic and Origi are all injured. Even a point would be enough. AC Milan have a strong home record too.
Did anyone watch the Atletico-Leverkusen match yesterday?
How did Grbic do? They lost 2-0
I watched up until the 1st goal. He didn’t have too much to do all game.
He came out once to challenge a player, but got beaten. I wished that he would have saved the 1st goal. It wasn’t a bad goal, but he almost had it. I’m sure many fans were thinking Oblak would have saved it.
Yea, I just caught the full highlights here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_XZ2YBUiao
Cacic should be given the UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year for simply benching Theophile-Catherine this season.
There’s no way Dinamo’s defense is this good with him in the lineup. He really hurt Dinamo the last time they were in Champions League, along with a few instances in Europa too.
Going from Theophile-Catherine to Josip Sutalo is an insane upgrade.
Dino Peric is still pretty shaky for me. Good to have a big CB for clearing cross attempts, but he’s a bit slow and not as good with his feet. But, he’s better than Theophile-Catherine or Dilaver.
We’ll see if this backline and defensive play from the rest of our team can get prevent all decent shot attempts on goal and get Livakovic on the team-of-the-week again, ha ha.
If Sutalo starts and has a good game today my bet would be he’ll be bought by an Italian team! I think he’s going to be as good as the former star Italian defenders…Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini…
Dude did u just compare Sutalo to Baresi and Maldini??? Wow. No wonder some of these guys turn out to be busts. The expectations we place on them are just insanely unfair. C’mon man.
Imagine they grind out a W
% Chances of going thru the group after 2 wins !?
2 wins would get you third place for sure (and a spot in the Europa knockout phase).
But it also would put Dinamo in a great position to get into the actual knockout phase for Champions League.
Football is weird though. Dinamo could win against Chelsea, but then drop both games against Red Bull Salzburg, lol. We’ll see what happens with those two critical games after this Milan game.
