#15 Marin Čilić is cruising at the 2022 US Open through the first two rounds and has yet to drop a set. After making it to the semifinals of the French Open this year, Čilić had to sit out Wimbledon due to testing positive for COVID. He beat Maximilian Marterer and Albert Ramos Viñolas in the first two rounds with minimal court time to keep his legs fresh. Čilić will now play #20 Dan Evans Saturday in the Round of 32.
After winning his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament last week in Cincinnati, Borna Ćorić was bounced from the US Open Thursday in straight sets by American Jenson Brooksby. It will be a disappointing loss for Ćorić but still a successful month, where he won major silverware and earned a spot back in the world top-30 rankings.
Petra Martić had a huge win Thursday afternoon in New York when she took down #4 Paula Badosa in three sets. Martić will now face 2012, 2013 Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka in the Round of 32 Saturday. The farthest Martić has ever gotten in a Grand Slam is the French Open quarterfinal in 2019.
Ćaleta-Car to Southampton
Straight sets for Cilic is huge. But Martic had the more difficult games here, and it’s worth mentioning how far she has come. She was down a set in this game where it was tight 7-6, and then came back to win the other two sets 6-1 and 6-2. That’s huge improvement I think.
From her previous games years back I mean. I am thoroughly impressed with her right now, she is playing really well.
