2014 US Open champion and 2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Čilić received an incredibly generous draw in New York to start a huge week for Croatian sports. The last tennis Grand Slam of the year began Monday with Čilić easily disposing of American Tennys Sandgren in four sets at the US Open.
Čilić will play again on Wednesday when he faces German Florian Mayer in the second round. Borna Ćorić will play #4 seed Aleksander Zverev on Wednesday. On the women’s side, Donna Vekić and Mirjana Lučić-Baroni won their first round matches while #21 ranked Ana Konjuh lost in three sets to Australian Ashleigh Barty.
Croatian basketball tips off the European championships (EuroBasket) on Friday against Hungary in Cluj, Romania. Croatia will be fighting against Spain to top the group which also includes Romania, Montenegro and Czech Republic. There is no reason this Croatian side, with plenty of NBA talent, doesn’t make the semifinals this year.
On Saturday, Croatia host Kosovo in World Cup qualifying before hitting the road to face Turkey in a pivotal Group I match on Tuesday, September 5th.
As far as Čilić goes at the US Open, there will never be an easier road for him to make a Grand Slam final. With world elites Andy Murray, Novak Djoković and Stan Wawrinka all pulling out of the tournament due to injury and with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on the opposite side of the draw, Čilić may once again make some noise in Flushing Meadows. With the injury to #2 Andy Murray occurring just before the tournament started, Čilić was moved into the #2 overall spot in the draw as the fourth best ranked player. The only guys that may give him trouble on the way to the final will be Tsonga or Zverev.
Vs kosovo – a laboured 1 – 0 win for the lazy cunts
Vs tukey – 0 – 0 or 1- 0 loss for the bums representing us.
followed with comments like ” why do we have to play shit teams or the classic ” we all gave a 100%. Lol lol lol!
Karlovic fighting back
Do the goals/ points against the worst team in the group drop?

3 games left?
We should least be able to come second and get into playoff
Basically we want Turkey, Iceland and Ukraine to keep drawing with each other i think, so we can get ahead with some wins. That 6-0 win might be a lifesaver with goal diff later on too, see how we go
Basically, HOLD ME IM SCARED !!!!
:O
How many more games left in qualifying?
What a match……expierence barely pushed him to the win
The fed match is WILD
US Open men’s draw is wide open. Love the night time tennis.
Federer match going to a 5th set.
Coric v Zverev
4 points might be good, depends on other results, Iceland are away to Finland and then home to Ukraine so if they draw both those games or lose one and draw, 4 points might be dandy, really depends on other results
Oh wow i didnt realise the WCQs were back upon us again. Difficult to beat Turkey away but Kosovo should pose no probs, we’ll prolly get 4 points i think but obv hoping for 6
Thinks for reiterating that me and JB agree!
If Santuni sees the field in anything other than a blowout, I might be asking for MuCacic to step down next week.
@idemo that is exactly JBs point. He isn’t saying we qualify w 6, If we don’t get 6/6 we are in a very tough position.
I think we qualify, regardless of changes or injuries.
4 teams left with all a chance for first place 13 13 11 11
I just don’t see how even 6/6 this round does it for us
Cro likely need all 6 points to qualify for the World Cup. Hopefully they play knowing that.
Nishikori out as well
