Marin Čilić takes down #2 ranked Daniil Medvedev in straights sets at the French Open to set up a date with #7 Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals. This is Čilić’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance since the US Open in 2018.
It was all Čilić from start to finish against Medvedev, who just won the US Open in 2021 and made the final of the Australian Open four months ago. Now Čilić will face another top ranked Russian in the quarterfinal round: Andrey Rublev. Čilić only has two wins in six total matches against Rublev but just recently defeated him in fours sets in the Round of 32 of the 2022 Australian Open. At 33 years old and currently ranked #23 in the world, Čilić is hitting a second stride late in his career with a 2021 Davis Cup finals appearance for Croatia and once again making the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event in 2022.
Marin is looking good of late. He is serving well and his forehand has improved.
Hopefully he can beat Rublev like he did at the Australian Open in January.
And if not mistaken he isn’t great on clay
Let’s hope he can get to the finals
Just saw that. Marin says never mind football look at me. Great result. He looks strong this year. Looks like he discovered the weight room. Seriously though, he looks really good.
