21 year-old Zagreb native Borna Ćorić will play in the most important match of his young career Sunday night in New York when he takes on world #3 and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro at the US Open. The two will meet in the 4th Round (final 16) of the year’s final Grand Slam.
Ranked 20th in the world, this is the farthest Ćorić has ever been at any Grand Slam; and a win vs. del Potro wouldn’t just boost his profile, but it would also see Ćorić play in his first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal. The match should approximately start at 8:30PM east coast time and can be seen on ESPN in the States.
Dubbed the Croatian Djoković, big things are expected from Ćorić the next decade, especially when the likes of Federer and Nadal decide to retire.
#7 ranked Marin Čilić was supposed to have a walk in the park match against 19 year-old Aussie Alex de Minaur in the 3rd Round of the US Open Saturday night in Queens. Instead, the 45-ranked de Minaur took the first two sets (6-4, 6-3) from the 2014 US Open champion as Čilić looked unfocused and made far too many unforced errors in an absolute “barn burner” of a match. Čilić regrouped; taking the third and fourth sets comfortably, (6-3, 6-4) before going the distance 7-5 in the fifth and final set. Čilić was uneasy the entire night as he needed seven match points to get the job done against the Australian teenager who showed the true heart of a lion. The kid didn’t stop running until the match finally ended. He will have a bright future if Saturday night was any indication of how he plays.
The match lasted four hours and finished at 2:20AM local time in New York. Čilić will now face #10 David Goffin in the 4th Round. Goffin has beat Čilić three times in five matches, however, Čilić has won the last two: 2016 (Paris) and 2017 (Rome).
Can two Croatians make it to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam?
humidity is like a sauna here in the northeast of north america in summer thick like pea soup..australia i believe the air is dry desert air like pepper..easier to breath and keep cool ..humidity doesnt allow an athlete to cooldown easily.
Tennis was fun when Croats and Serbs would fight at the matches. Now it is pretty much a gay WOG sport.
Also wd to my Aussie compatriot for knocking out Fed. That’s one less fuckwit on Cilic’s side of the draw.
Cmon the Aus Open is harder, no tie breaks in the fifth!
Cilic won easily ..he’s got a shot at winning this 4 million prize..frig coric was sweating like a sweat hog yesterday. This is the toughest tourney in the world.in the tenns worldi agree these guys are conditioned like gymnasts to handle the humidity ..5 players retired an black kid almost went down.
Ironically the issue might be he didnt get ENOUGH sleep after that virtual all-nighter the other day
Yeah i kinda dont care about player awards etc. Cilic winning the US Open is way more important than these friendlies coming up for the Vatreni. I don’t think some scumbags on this site realise how hard it is to win a grand slam in tennis.
And I think Del Potro over Djokovic in the final. Cilic finds a way to lose to crappier players too much. He’s already down a break to Goffin. That’s a guy he should beat in his sleep.
And I’ll take Cilic winning the US Open over Modric winning player of the year. That would just be consolation for Croatia getting screwed by FIFA.
Woman’s sport? One of the toughest sports in the world. You try running around in 40C heat for 4 hours. Guys are all in great shape. And it’s a worldwide sport, like soccer. And unlike garbage like baseball. And Croats like it and are good at it. And they have a chance to win the Davis Cup. Not sure why some Croatians would crap on a sport that they are good at.
Iggy, I’m sorry if I got your panties in a bunch! Lets worry about the royal prize. Modric is in the cusp of winning!!
And to any cunting cunt who says who cares about tennis it’s a womens’ sport; yes, it IS a fucking women’s sport and anyone who cares about Hrvatska in sports would know our first accomplishment, before Vatreni achieved anything, before Goran won wimbledon, our first Grand Slam champ was 1997 @ the french and it was Iva Majoli and it was an historic day for us.
So, yes, CUNTRASH, it is a women’s sport, and a very fucking good one that means a lot to the history of Croatian sport. This site is called croatiansports.com ya ingrate knuckledragging mouthbreather. Some of you cretins may be too pre-pubescent to appreciate fully the history of tennis for our nation so you can thank me later for schooling u in this info.
P.S. Lick my balls Lika
Coric got a belting but no surprise there vs DelPo.
No worries fellas Cilic gonna win this year’s tourney 😉
Who cares about tennis… It’s a women’s sport.
Borna going at it. He’s in deep. You never know. We’ve seen cilic in deep. He made it. God willing!
Gee I hate del potro. Dont know why. Can’t stand the guy.
That de Minaur was really good earlier the year here in Aus. He’s only 19 but he’s basically Hewitt-clone and will be a contender in the years to come so no shame in being pushed by him. Hopefully doesn’t take too much out of Marin, at least his earlier games were total cakewalks.
Yep. 2006 French. Ancic and Ljubicic both made the quarters.
Wow that was a fun match to watch! Cilic should handle Goffin. Ićm curious to see if Coric can go toe to toe with DelPo.
Croatia has Davis Cup semis vs. USA in 2 weeks. This would be a nice boost all around if they could both make quarters. Has that ever happened before?
Wow what a match 4 hrs cilic confidence will be sky high next match..commentator says will be a memorable match they’ll talk bout in the future best tennis so far.
Cilic hung in there. One of the best tennis matches I’ve ever seen next to of course the 2001 Wimbledon final. Wow what a match.
Sure can Ante. Young buck. Cilic seems to have righted the ship in the 3rd set. See what happens.
Watching now.
So many unforced errors. Seems like Cilic thought this was gonna be an easy 3-setter. This Aussie can run!
Wish coric luck. Cilic on the other hand is in deep with this Aussie dude.
