On paper, Croatia and Spain should easily top Group B and punch their tickets to the EURO 2023 quarterfinals. However, the way manager Igor Bišćan has managed this team, anything can happen. Bišćan has been suspect with squad selection and has taken his foot off the gas multiple times when the Mladi Vatreni have been the far superior team. Instead of putting a nail in the coffin, he switches to a bunker defense with tons of Croatian firepower on the pitch, which is just plain simple: WEIRD.
This team consists of Luka Sučić (Red Bull Salzburg), Gabriel Vidović (Vitesse), Dion Drena Beljo (Osijek), Stipe Biuk (Hajduk), Roko Šimić (Red Bull Salzburg) and Martin Baturina (Dinamo Zagreb), to name a few. A couple of these guys will be Croatia senior players soon enough. Sučić already is. This is a great time for the kids to gel together across an entire month. If they finish top-3 in the tournament, they will also book Croatia’s first football berth at the Olympics, which would take place in Paris in 2024.
Spain will be Croatia’s toughest foe in group but don’t look past a very good Ukraine side as well as Romania, who will be playing on home soil as they co-host the tournament with Georgia. The tournament kicks off June 21st and concludes with the final on July 8th.
As per the brekalo talk below
I think he has use a super sub when we need a shake up on offence
Currently like a poorer version of orsic but on the right?
He had a pretty darn solid season last year
But yes he is more fragile but also make space and offence from little, or at least he can
Doesn’t seem he has the goods for this tourney tho
But we are in pretty good shape these days when we can leave a pretty solid player like brekalo at home
Tho he gets bonus points for living a “zds” lifestyle according to the truth
It would be nice to see budimir bang in a few headers at the upcoming World Cup from swinging corners from Sosa
Are they even working on this scenario
U21 2023 Euro has to be an our time.
I want to see these boys primed to compete for the championship.
We need young and hungry legs for our Euro 2024, Luka Modrić swan song.
When I see Luka playing with young super stars at Real Madrid, I think about how we need young legs to support him to keep creating the magic.
Gvardiol and Lovren are fixed for the central defender
Marocco will punish us _ someone should stab Dalic! +
and change our fate . . .
Dont say this
He said it because he’s a fake Croat that doesn’t live the ZDS lifestyle, like you
I agree I think that the comment there is ridiculous to speak of someone being stabbed is atrocious! Such opinions and views have no place on this site or anyone else really.
You don’t like Lovren, fine, neither do I but there is still no place for such a comment.
We won’t lose to a team who is forbidden from eating prosciutto LA!

It looks like Brozovic is on track to be on the pitch soon. Good news…..

Nice powerful header from Budimir.

I know it wasn’t against a world class opponent, but 3 assists is still impressive. Excellent service by Sosa.
3 assists for.a defender is exceptional, hopefully he can develop this more!
U17 Euro qualifier Croatia v Wales 0 – 2 played at home in Porec. Watched the match and I must say that I was disappointed by what I saw. Poor performance by the team coached by Robert Jarni.
One of our players stood out and that is Luka Vuskovic age 15, plays central defender. He is the younger brother of Mario Vuskovic who plays for HSV in Germany. Few months back we were discussing how good he was and physically developed for such a young player and weather he would be more suited for Basketball? From what I saw he has chosen the right sport and should stick to Soccer. He is physically strong and technically superb for a 15-year-old central defender and if all goes well has a bright future in the sport.
Any highlights to show this kid, Mart??
Links I mean?? I am gonna assume because it’s under 17 probably not, but I though I would ask in case you may have a link or if there might be one somewhere lol.
Mate1, I watch the matches on MaxSport1, the same channel that broadcasts all the HNL matches in Croatia. It is a subscription channel. Not sure if these youth matches are shown LIVE on YouTube or if there are any links? The next group match is against Albania on Sunday at 1300 hours Croatian time. The final match is against Sweden on Wednesday also at 1300 hrs.
He bombed one(scored)From his half of the pitch a couple weeks Back for hajduk youth
Have to find it and figure how to share it
Robert Jarni is still coaching?
He’s an idiot with a horrible coaching resume.
Yes, agree with you. I think this could be his third stint coaching our youth teams? On previous two occasions we did not make it out of the qualifying group. There is a Hajduk connection here with Stipe Pletikosa being the national Technical Director (big say in youth coach selection) and Nenad Pralija former Hajduk player is the assistant coach. Most of the players that started the U17 match were from Hajduk. I’m a Hajduk fan, but look we need to select coaches and players on merit and not on appeasing Hajduk and Torcida.
Mate1 has convinced me, forget about Rebic, while he was good at the world cup he was pretty pathetic at the Euros, and what Dalic said about the Euro being a golden opportunity for Rebic to light it up is spot on, and when he didn’t he blamed Dalic, the very coach that he played so well for at the world cup.
Good work Mate1
Alright guys you really need to pay attention to this comment.
I’m watching a recorded game from 2020 Euros between Czech v Croatia and I wanna make a few important notes.
1) Ante Rebic is BY FAR a thousand times more effective in in his worst form than Budimir or Kramaric is at striker.
2) Brekalo is as fragile as a wet paper bag! He has no clue how to take control of the ball and make shit happen.
3) it took 22 minutes before I heard Kramaric’s name mentioned…he’s playing as a false 9
4) Gvardiol is such an awesome talent
For my Rebic comment. To those of you that think soccer is played only with skill and talent, you’re 100% wrong! Rebic completely fucks up defenders and goalies because he’s always chasing and he’s fast. Budimir always looks like he’s completely bagged, even 5 minutes into the game while Rebic forces soo much chaos even if his touch is bad.
In this game, the Czech’s were dirty little bastards, fouling lots of our players off the ball and on the ball!
We shouldn’t play Perisic on the right, he’s not himself over there and Brekalo wouldn’t make my village team if he keeps playing like a ballerina.
Perisic. Petko rebic
I like it but it won’t happen
We would hear some sort of rumour
Rebic ship has sailed brate sorry
Slavonac,
I never liked Brekalo personally. But a lot of people on this site seem to like him, which is fine.
Kramaric, has not showed his contribution at all or where he fits with this national team and roster back then or even now. I just don’t see it with him.
Yes, Rebic has caused defensive chaos for other teams and he does achieve this well with his speed. Giving him credit for that. But while he can do this against other teams we have to keep in mind that he has the same capacity to screw things up for our defense, in spades. That is the bigger issue for me with him. People seem to be forgetting this a bit too much.
And absolutely yes, Perisic is best on the left.
But, I am not sure how this Rebic conversation keeps coming up. Look, if he honestly worked on his ball control and handling a little more, and becomes a little better in that category than I would be fine with it. But again it’s not like he has scored an insane amount of goals for us or his club. So I don’t see it unfortunately.
Look, maybe I am wrong, but what he did throughout all 3 games in the 2020 Euro was enough for me to say drop him. It wasn’t just the game against Spain he struggled in all 3 games, and made a lot of mistakes and lost the ball on a lot of different occasions from what I remember.
As the opponents we face get more difficult and become more possessive with ball than us, Rebic starts to stand out like a sore thumb. So yeah maybe against a team like Canada he would be good, but against Belgium, or France, or Spain I think he would wreak more havoc for our defense than the other team.
Just my thoughts.
I’ve watched both Rebic’s over the years and I’ve seen the “losing the ball” Rebic as well as the guy that can turn quickly and kill defenders. Both of them chase down the ball, press high and get back to help defenders…all mat a high speed.
Trust me when I tell you that Rebic is far more “EFFECTIVE” than Vlasic, Brekalo, Budimir, Livaja, Kramaric…I’ve watched him play since he was in Germany and then now in AC Milan and he’s a very valued player because everyone knows he can not only change the outcome of a game in one play but he also has tenacity than none of the guys I mentioned have.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about when you say he loses possession, he normally creates his own chances while we barely see any of the guys I mentioned above creating much!
Take away rebic’s goal against Argentina which fell into his lap and what else do you really have??
I can’t argue or debate with a person that can’t see his strengths. Rebic was pretty awesome at the last World Cup so your comment is pretty telling!
I think what Slavonac is trying to say Placenta (strange choice of name lol), is that Rebic’s pace off puts the defensive line for other teams. While I agree that the goal against Argentina was gifted to him, and it was, from a goal scoring standpoint he has come a long way with AC Milan, which a lot of people here are arguing, in fairness to the guy. My problem is that I see him as train wreck, which I think he is.
My point above is to say that when your playing international you cannot always rely on the subset of players you have during club season. Things change, and the difficulty level also changes as your playing harder teams with less options around you. So as an individual you really have stand up and make a difference. Rebic had three games.to do this but failed to do so, in Dalic’s words “he thought this was Rebic’s golden opportunity to light it up” but he didn’t and blamed everyone else afterwards and called the team shit. Bad move.
Now, I am not saying that similar difficulties are not faced during the club season but international is much harder to win. Case and point Modric has 5 UCL Cups but no international trophy. Not saying the guy hasn’t earned it, and I am not saying it makes him less of
a better player, he is exceptional, but when you can rely on great players beside you all the time it is a bit easier to achieve success in one sense.
Rebic did stand out like a sore thumb for me, and I didn’t see the defensive contribution that Slavonac is talking about when I watched the Euro. I saw a sluggish person who was barely in his own half, especially against Spain but also in the other games. I also saw the same thing recently when watching the guy play for A C Milan. Unless it was an offensive play, he was anything but a Mandzukic who would play defensive and try to dispossess the other team. When Rebic did try it would end up in failure , and usually turn into a card or atleast a foul for the opposing team. This is what I see, but maybe I am wrong and somehow missed what others seem to see in the guy.
Now if Rebic was scoring 20 goals a season for A C Milan, which there isn’t a season that he has, then I would be willing to forget all this. But again he is not. So, I have to say that I just don’t see it. But if somehow ono day Dalic picks the guy, and he turns it around than so be it I was wrong. I hope the guy does well, I honestly do. I wish the same for all.yhe players really.
You’re not wrong that he’s tempermental and that when he’s not good, he’s pretty bad…I’m saying when he’s in form, he’s a beast!
Like I said above in my other comment, Rebic is more “effective” than Livaja, Budimir, Vlasic, Brekalo….and…he had a bad tournament at the Euro’s. Back in 2012, in my opinion, Perisic was a HUGE disappoinement and lackadasical, he then turned things around and started becoming more on a consistent player.
At the end of the day, we want to see players complete their assignments. A player on the wing has to create chances and Rebic does that better than what we currently have.
I remember soo many people pumping Brekalo’s tires and look at hime, he’s been irrelevant for almost 2 years now!
I agree, that we do. If Rebic can change his stupid mindset and listen to his coach, and work on his ball control…then I am game. I do like his speed and he does cause problems in the other half.
Rebic creates chances with his “bull in a china shop” style of play…but he’s botched just as many chances too.
At the last World Cup (just off the top of my head) he missed several sure-fire goals that were created by others…
– He missed a beautifully set up sitter in front of the net against Nigeria (fanning on the tap-in as it bounced off the top of his foot),
– He missed an injury-time breakaway against Denmark (which was set up beautifully for him by Modric) and Rebic got fouled when he stupidly tried to walk the ball into the net (instead of tapping it in)
– He missed a golden chance that landed in his lap in front of the English goal (when Perisic’s shot ricochet’s off the post and right to Rebic, right in front of goal) and he reacted poorly
These were chances created by others.
However, he does create chances with his style of play and pressing… like the Argentina goal.
But even though he scored against Argentina, he probably should not have cranked it the way he did. A better player would have opted for more control, rather than power, since the Argentina keeper was in no man’s land. It turned out to be a great goal anyway, but let’s not pretend that his shot wasn’t more likely to go sailing over the net. 8 times out of 10, Rebic fucks that chance up.
He was far too aggressive in that Argentina first half, and was very lucky to not get red carded. He messed up a few runs toward goal too and Perisic and his teammates looked upset with him. Dalic opted to keep him on, when most of us wanted to take him off and the pressing game finally paid off…BUT we all closed our eyes and held our breath when we watched him unnecessarily wind up to crank that shot full blast at the Argentina net.
If he missed that shot, he would’ve been subbed out shortly afterward and who knows how we would have viewed his performance after the World Cup.
In the end, I think he’s a good player to have off the bench in certain situations. Having depth and a wide array of skillsets is always good. But if his presence messes up the lockerroom, then he’s not a big loss.
Knowing what we know today, would you rather have Vlasic, Brekalo, Budimir or Livaja play instead of him?
Yes a hundred times over Slavonac, as per our last conversation about the striker problem all the players listed are a little bit wiser with ball, especially Livaja out of the names listed, and Petkovic and Orsic to name a few.
I am not fond of Vlasic or Brekalo, or Budimir so I would opt for younger talent or different talent like Colak from Scottish Premiership and or Marin Ljubicic from the Austrian League as they are scoring way more goals right now. They have a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and are proving their worth. Rebic is not doing this and to top things off I jury is a constant issue with him as well. The last part of the argument may not be fair but it’s life.
When you have an issue goals being scored and no traditional number 9, like how we do not, then you put the players who are in form and scoring. I think it’s pretty plain and simple to me. Rebic does not solve this issue unfortunately. While thos newer or you get talent is a risk l, I think it’s a risk worth taking here for Dalic personally.
While these newer or younger players (talent) I meant on the comments above…
I’d put Vlašić ahead of Rebić right now because he’s younger and he’s having a good season.
They’re both subs, but Rebić does offer something different in certain matchups.
These players are all in the same ballpark, but with Budimir and Livaja being on the lower end (and on the way out).
Considering we have a lot of upcoming youth we need to integrate, half these guys should be cut with maybe a couple being end-of-the-bench types (unless they take another step in their careers).
Great analysis maminjo of rebic, spot on!
Real Modrić has relaxed back into Real Madrid where the other super stars z as actually carry their weight.
Luka as a role player still the goods:
CM: Luka Modric – 7/10 – Able to draw gasps and oohs from a crowd supposedly rooting for the opposition.
I wonder if their rest of HNS can step and allow Modrić to give us 60+ minutes over these next two years?
I hope so too
Half games for luka would be great
It’s what I was hoping mandzo could Have given us
Three seniors are allowed for Olympic squad ?
Luka Perisic and who
I think they would want to do it for the experience and they deserve to go just for sun
Olympics would be a proper send off for modric! It would be a long summer of international soccer, with a euro lead in, I hope that can happen!
Perisic and Caleta both in the lineup for their respective clubs.
We’ve had world champions in shot-put, discus, rowing, judo etc
But I have to say never seen an Arm wrestling champion. Lol
18-year-old Rino Masic won two Golds at the World Armwrestling Championship both Left handed and Right handed.
Look at the guns on this teenager! My goodness. Never thought I’d see an Arm wrestling champion. Lol
Wow interesting news on ljubicic, wonder if the hns promised him a spot on the wc roster? That is one crowded left side!
Nah.
He’s a typical hardcore dijaspora Croat who would rather not play for Austria, just to keep the opportunity to play for Croatia open.
Not sure if he’s good enough for a callup.
Maybe just call him up to dick around with Borna Sosa to teach him how it’s done.
He’s pretty good and I think better than Barisic!
I wanna see him play against some better competition consistently, seems to have thrived in the champions league this year!
@Slavonac from Canada
Fully agree, much better back-up than Barisic for the team
What’s this news??
Robert ljubicic decided to represent hrvatska instead of Austria!
Oh I thought Marin ljubicic
I’m like that guy is way too hajduk to play for country
Total brain fart
Well let’s hope him and his hair continue to develop and can be on the repka one day
Anyone with hair like that has to have some character…
Croatian “side show bob”
Netflix doc on 6 World Cup captains, one is Luka.
no way -I> he won’t do anything
even let Dalic get Lovren on the pitch
and take over the commands – on the field
https://www.netflix.com/us/title/81580687?s=i&trkid=13747225&vlang=en&clip=81613891
Wonder if Luka would play. Imagine that?!
Modric ? I have a feeling that he will retire from international football after the WC.
Nah.
I think he wants to become a coach and will take that player/coach role first.
We’re in a very easy Euro2024 qualifying group (and we still get an automatic playoff berth for winning our Nations League group).
Missing the Euros is pretty much impossible for us, so we probably should just start bringing Modric off the bench in these qualifying games.
I would start with some trio of Broz, Majer, Kovacic (or Sucic) and see how it goes.
If things don’t go our way in the game, then you bring Modric in the second half (as your secret weapon).
I think Modric sees himself as National Team coach one day, so he can ruin his legacy with us by botching a tournament (ha ha).
He’s coaching now- you think Dalic could do this alone? No way
Olympics would be fun
