I’ve never heard anyone describe a Spanish person speaking Spanish as having a “Spanish accent”. Typically, an “accent” means a person speaking a foreign language in their native accent (e.g. a Russian speaking English is described as having a ‘Russian accent’) or regional accents of a National Language (e.g. a “Boston accent”).

As I had mentioned yesterday, in the first half Holland allowed Spain time on the ball but definitely fought hard and physically beat them…there were several examples of how many hard tackles the Dutch made. The second half was a pure mismatch and lack of will from Spain to match Hollands defensive discipline defensively. Spain expected to continue to attack while they missed all their defensive assignments and paid a hefty price. I was in jubilation watching some fantastic soccer, wave after wave of attack and Spain still didn’t adjust and show an ounce of fighting spirit….this is soccer, it’s part of knowing how to sacrifice vs going forward….all teams need “borci”, you can’t win on skill alone….sometimes you have to sacrifice your body, get goal side of your player when defending and win the little battles….Spain did none of that in the second half yesterday and Holland kept playing entertaining soccer….I lived it!

Maybe but I dont really buy into revenge. Not saying I’m right you’re wrong but those tactics beat Spain with or without revenge. Yes maybe Robben played that little bit better because he blew it in the final. But for me, they win regardless with those tactics.

The most refreshing aspect of this result is I feel we are witnessing the birth (or rebirth) of the 5-3-2. It was an extremely brave call as changing from the 4-3-3 is blasphemy in Holland. If you have the wing backs capable of this demanding formation it is quite fascinating ( FWIW I feel we do but you need to implement this early in preparation).

The flexibility to bunker down, Counter or control is fantastic.

Mexico are using it too which concerns me as they overwhelmed Cameroon with it. Fortunately I don’t think they are AS good at it.

Let’s use the wonderful thing called perspective.

Van Gaal executed a perfect counter attacking game when he saw Spain playing with virtually 2 CBs. NO OTHER team will be this negligent. Netherlands deserve credit for their execution but they were also fortunate Silva didnt ice the game at 2-0 before half time.

Netherlands will beat Australia and guarantee a spot in the next round, but they are far from the finished article.

There should be a replay system in soccer. Let’s say you give each team one challenge per regulation game, & an additional one for overtime. Kovac wouldn’t have been able to challenge the bogus call on Olic b/c the whistle was blown just b4 Perisic put the ball into the net (although you’d instruct refs to be more patient w/ there whistle, wait as long as they can until a play has been completed); however, Kovac would have been able to challenge the call on Lovren (yes “judgement calls” would be challengeable), and the ref that made the call would watch the replay on his cell phone – now there’s no way in hell he wouldn’t have overturned his own call after it had been challenged knowing the whole world was watching what he was.

We can beat Cameroon and Mexico without Modric but we need him back should we advance.

Is there really much of a difference in talent btwn Brazil’s starting 11 & Croatia’s?

I was just as pissed at Jelavic’s feeble attempt as I was elated at the own goal, he should have smashed a hole thru the net. And I noticed way b4 this game that he falls down too easily.

I thought Pletikosa should have saved all three goals, especially the 1st one – one more half step he would have gathered that in easily. Subasic starts for a high priced club that finished in second place in the 4th or 5th best league in the world, why hasn’t anybody even once considered him to start for Croatia? -I’m honestly not saying this after the fact, it’s something I’ve thought of for a while.

After they called the bogus foul on Olic, I was thinking that Croatia will get the next important close call, that’s what a ref is supposed to do – especially in an evenly played game; instead it went to Brazil -and it wasn’t actually even close, there’s no way on God’s green earth that’s a foul. And don’t forget that Olic was also taken down just inside the box & no foul was called.

Sure he splashed a few decent looking balls around but dude needs to grow a fuckin pair.

Penalty kick no one expects the goalies to save em. I understand he got his hands on it so he could have done a little better. Third goal, it was our defense and his fault. No reason he should ever get that shot off. Solid performance though, Olic is in shape. Perisic surprised me and vrsaljko very solid. Wih mandza up top we could have scored more. Ref boned us so I am never eating sushi again.

I’m trying to give Stipe the benefit of the doubt. That first goal that Neymar scored, Neymar completely fanned on the shot. That threw Stipe off guard and he jumped too early because he thought that it was going to be a rocket of a shot. Instead, the shot skipped on the ground and rolled into the far corner grazing the post. Neymar didn’t mean to do that, and he got lucky. To save this shot, Stipe could’ve taken another step before he dove, but he didn’t realize that it would’ve been that slow of a shot. Very deceptive.

He almost saved that penalty too, but was unlucky that it still managed to sneak in (you can never blame a goaltender for a penalty goal). I’m not so sure if that Neymar penalty was even legitimate. It looked like Neymar was running on the spot for several seconds. Is that even allowed?

But. the third goal probably should’ve been stopped by Stipe. The game was lost at this point, and this opening was created by our defenders pushing forward for the injury time goal (not to mention Rakitic being BRUTALLY fouled which resulted in this counter attack goal).

The entire events surrounding the third goal made me sick, so I’m trying not to blame Plete. Croatia being forced to push forward for an equalizing goal only because of a bullshit penalty IN ADDITION TO a Croatia goal being called back. Then Rakitic being tackled like a rugby player, and the ball going right to Oscar for the counter goal.

If Pletikosa makes a mistake in the next game, then he should get yanked for Subasic.

The Pranjic injury was a blessing in disguise. Vrsaljko (who has been excellent this season for both Genoa and the U21s) showed us how good he is. He’s our LB for the rest of this tournament, and will eventually push Srna out at RB in the near future. Vrsaljko will be on another team next season. Probably Arsenal.

I’m always on Lovren’s ass, but the dude was solid today. The ref knew that wasn’t a true penalty. You could see it in his face when Lovren was yelling at him for five minutes. Most refs threaten players with a red card for arguing so long, but he knew that it wasn’t even a penalty, so the ref stood there and took it from Lovren with an apologetic face.

Kovac made the right substitutions. He subbed out Jelavic and resisted the urge to put in the Brazilian against Brazil. He made the absolute correct call putting in Rebic. Rebic looked like he didn’t give two fucks who Brazil was. Lol. Fucking Imocanin.

Kovacic looked gassed, but our bench was super thin. Kovac made the right call putting in Brozovic instead of Sammir. Unlike Rebic, Brozovic was a little nervous at first, and it showed, but he was the only midfielder on our team who took shots on the Brazil net. If Modric and Rakitic took some earlier, Cesar wouldn’t have saved any of them (or would have dropped a big rebound if he did).

Olic was useful, but we could have done without his stupid dribbling antics. The rest of the team tore into him for that. It was good to see them yelling at him. He’ll smarten up for the next game.

Pletikosa was solid, but you have to wonder if he could’ve saved at least one of those two bottom corner goals. His reaction was identical to both of them. I think he’ll be fine for the next game, but if he lost some confidence and makes an error in the Cameroon game, I could see Subasic getting a shot.

Perisic doing well on that right side. That was his goal that was called back. Dude is proving everyone wrong, and looks to be an excellent option on that right side.

Same lineup for Cameroon, but you replace Jelavic with Mandzukic. Rebic as the first sub if things get stale.

after the first goal, croatia didn’t play great. but it was by the design .they fell back into defensive posture. and with 3 creative miss (rakitic, kovacic, and modric) and no destroyer dm, this was not a natural role for them

cro looked much better at the start of the second half as the score was tied up and kovac likely let them go back into attack mode

Let’s look at a different perspective. I saw the game today, I saw the game with Spain in 2012. In both cases the winning teams needed copious assistance from the referees to prevail. It wasn’t the best game for Olic or Pletecosa, but this is a good squad and Mexico and Cameroon are going to have their work cut out.

Vrsaljko played a solid match he wasn’t perfect but he did enough to stake his claim, he didnt have his colours lowered, he won more duels than he lost. I guarantee that if we had Pranjic at LB brazil wouldnt have even need the referees to hand them the match

Time to rate some players;

The bad: Kovacic did not play well today, good news is i believe in him he should be a stud. Vrsaljko, althought many think he played well, i think he was our weak link on defense, looked to be out of positions, but atleast has make up speed. Worse player on the squad today, pletikosa, to bad cause he is the best hrvat “za dom spremni lifestyle” on that team.

The good: I think our midfield is the real deal, modric will play better and rakitic looking good. We missed mandzukic for sure, and rebic is a better option then jelavic.

All in all if we can play like this against the cameroon and mexico we can move on.

I really hope brazil doesnt give points up, cause in reality it seemed like they had two stand out players, neymar and oscar they look like a team that may loose to a shity team or tie. I dont want to see a tie break situation in our group. But i hope we control our own destiny win the next two.

We had no chance in winning today. FIFA already decided that before the game started.

However, Olic played out of position and should have been subbed out at half along with Jelavic. I like what Rebic brought to the game and would certainly use him with Mandzo going forward. Perišić was our best player today. Vrsaljko played well.

We will be Cameroon and then we’ll see against Mexico. We never seem to do good against Latin American teams.

A corrupt organisation holding its biggest event in a corrupt country, was the outcome ever going to be any different? Both teams seemed nervous especially in the first half, lots of sloppy giveaways. Even though Brazil dominated possession it did not lead to many chances and a draw would of been a fair result. Next game I would like to see Mandzukic & Rebic in for Jelavic & Olic, although I think Kovac will start Olic.

Had ref not called a penalty when he did, it would have been called on a different play shortly later. You have to know that there was no way FIFA was allowing anything but a victory, no matter how obvious.
