Croatia knocks Serbia out of World Cup

September 4, 2013 By Ante Kvartuč 594 Comments

Kova_i__i__timac_598753S1

Croatia came out in Belgrade playing three strikers in Mandzukic, Olic and Eduardo like they were going to put on a fireworks show in scoring goals, but they ultimately played a tactical game in the first half like they were playing Spain in their prime in the World Cup final: scared.

At the end of the match, Croatia should be happy upon the 1-1 result as they have eliminated everyone in their group, including Serbia, from World Cup contention and will now be headed to a playoff round tie regardless of their result with Belgium in October.

More to come from this match in the next few hours…

Croatian fans around the globe have many questions to be answered from manager Igor Stimac.

For crappie anglers, a small box of traditionally hackled
flies fishing reel information tied nearly three decades ago.
Voracious feeders that could easily decimate native
fish populations, say anglers, can be bass angling.

At the moment we have money in the pockets of the fishing reel information growers.

All i got out of that game was….

    – Stimac has no clue how to coach and needs to be removed ASAP together with mamic.

    – Lovren played well at LB.

    – Vukojevic should not be on that field.

    – Kovacic needs to be on the field.

    – Simunic had to do what he did

There is nothing else i saw that caught my attention. There wasn’t really much to see from us. To be honest with you guys, i felt like i was being chocked watching the game through a TV, how do you think our players felt out there? The serbs were on a hunt and were like killer bees on that pitch swarming everywhere. Then you got people like Ante B and others saying Rakitic cant make a pass. Nobody was able to pass they couldn’t barely breathe guys, we were so far apart from each other there was no chance to make 3 clean passes. Terrible strategy on the part of Stimac, he should have went in with an attacking strategy cause lose or tie meant the same for us (playoff). We needed a win to have a chance of not going into the playoff and he played the opposite. I read that the players said that they misunderstood the coaches strategy and didn’t play by it. I guess they were supposed to be sitting 10 meters higher than they were (don’t think that would have helped much). We were out played by a hungrier team and that’s final. Nice pass by Srna placing the ball through 3 defenders and beautiful goal by Manzdo.

Didn’t watch the game, but saw the results. Very surprised. Who knows, maybe these guys will do something.

Back to Stimac…….with his comment today he has shown he is not the man for the job. We already know he is not qualified as a coach and has no tactical knowledge, but today’s comments show he is a seljacina and a primitivac (again, no surprise).

Well, now is the time for the fans to react. No tickets should be purchased by the fans for the Belgium match. The Belgium fans are traveling well for their matches and I hope they buy up all of the tickets to the game in Maksimir and our fans decide not to attend and only watch on tv. What a sight that would be to see Belgium with more fans in Maksimir than our own. Hopefully it does happen.

This current squad under the leadership of Puppet Suker and Strucnjak Stimac deserve zero support. Stimac should be fired after the S. korea game or we go with him in the next two qualifiers and two playoff games and then get rid of him after we fail to reach Brazil. Stimac doesn’t deserve to be the coach of our repka. We deserve a person who treats people with respect and not a person who tells people to suck his dick or take it in the ass.

Croatia 76 – Slovenia 74 at the Eurobasket in Slovenia.

Repesa is coaching is ass off!

A joy to see a real Croatian coach getting the most out of his players.

Bogdanovic is a solid NBA guard and makes big shots. Saric is playing solid as a 19 year old. I prayer they can beat Czech tomorrow and progress to second round. Then the stands will begin to swell with Hrvati.

    @ Ziva

    Did you see the game?

First gutsy win I have seen in many a moon.

Forgive me but it must be said that Drazen would have had 40+. But I digress. I am happy to see these boys bring it as a cohesive unit. Bravo Repesa!

And we need Rogaine for Rakitic and his receding hairline. The guy couldn’t pass, and we couldn’t string together three passes together all game. We can’t blame Rakitic’s vision as he now has a Sixhead instead of a forehead.

  • Slavonac from Canada says:

JM- nobody said Rakitic lacks talent, quite the contrary…he lacks heart, commitment and the will to fight for his teammates. He has incredible talent but what does that do for you when your team is under pressure and you half assed appear as if your trying to defend? Nowadays, players are expected to play in both ends of the field, he’s a great attacker…when he has time and isn’t closely marked otherwise he’s completely out if the game…and that’s his problem! Anyone with his talent can play when they have time and space, he doesn’t do much when his team is defending…I can’t stand primadomnas!

Many people here talk about Zvone Boban being a huge talent…he was but not through being a flashy player. He was incredibly responsible, knew his role, had incredible vision and distributed very well…if he did dribble it was rare and he always took the option to pass to a player in a better position than he was…that’s what made him special. He played both ends if the field and was always one step ahead with regards to knowing what to do! Boban in an unofficial director in AC Milan, they still love and respect him there…that’s an accomplishment few have had…he didn’t score much or beat 9 guys and try to be a Maradona, but even Maradona respected players like him because he played for his team and not for himself! I will always love Boban for his unselfish attitude as a player…few like him!

i think the criticism of rakitic is too harsh. i will remind people he essentially won the game for us against macedonia when we were down 1-0. and he also started off the initial scoring series against serbia in zagreb. rakitic is putting in a great season at sevilla and showing himself to be a classy player. i have no doubt that his passion to play for the repka is high and given his decision to play for it over switzerland, that shouldn’t be questioned. i therefore think we need to look to why he isn’t performing as well as many think he’s capable of doing. and my best guess is the blame has to lie in stimac and his formations. against serbia, rakitic was set up to fail. with three forwards, there were zero passing angles for him in the midfield. that is why he played awful i believe. not b/c he’s not good or b/c he doesn’t have the heart. rakitic must continue to start. we just must find a better way to utilize the team’s assets

Mamic is an amoral person who doesn’t give a damn about anything besides those green backs (or multiple colored backs in this case). However Hajduk needs someone with business savy. Definitely not a replica of Mamic, but someone to put that organization together. Maybe if many years ago when the Luksic family tried to buy Hajduk and they succeeded Hajduk would have been alright today but that’s hard to know

What would you have done, let him go on a 60 yard run and score the winner against us?
That was actually a very “selfless” thing to do.
Took the red, preserved the point, knocked the Serbs out, and guaranteed 2nd place.
    Mission accomplished!
Im sure Srna apologized for that sloppy corner and thanked Simunic afterwards.

Either way……I woke up a few minutes ago in the fortified basement and am reading all this shit with Stimac and the media. This is awesome. We now have a seljacina of a coach basically telling the media and fans to suck his dick. He is making it so easy for the fans to root against him and the team, especially if we miss out on the World Cup. Serbia played all their young talent and they were a handful all night.

Rebic, Kovacic, Halilovic with Mandzukic and Modric are goal producing machine.

The issue now is that we need a real manager to get this talent running in the right direction.

We have more talent then I have seen in 25 years. And we have nice mix between studs in their prime and studs who are up and coming.

I say have Ante Gotovina manage the team with Boban as his adviser. We would get to semi’s of Brazil!

I cannot stand Mickey Mouse leaders holding our people back.

On kosarku note Repesa his coaching his ass off with half the talent.

Found some time finally, here we go:

The game was a fucking disaster in every aspect. We have a midfield but nobody decided to show up. There was NOBODY in the middle. Could somebody tell the team that passing the ball IS allowed in soccer? And I think we’ve seen the last of Receding Hairline Rakitic as a starter; he was absolutely pathetic. The goal by Mandzukic was amazing after a sloppy mistake from the serb defender. It’s nice to see that he scored but Croatia CANNOT put three forwards on the field with that “midfield” or lack thereof. We tied but that is not saying much. If we expect this performance at the WC, we will be out. The game against Belgium will tell us everything.

As for the atmosfera in BG, if anything like that happened in Zagreb, we would’ve immediately been kicked out. Double Standard, party of 11. STOP CIRILICI U VUKOVARU! Vukovar je HRVATSKI grad. If there was an Oluja in Slavonija, Hrvatska would be all the way to Zemun.

To those of you who wish Mamic was at Hajduk, really? Did you not see this game? It has already happened to Dinamo and you are starting to see it on the national team. What in Moses’s ball hair would you EVER want that to happen at Hajduk?

Also, there were Croatian fans there to those of you who thought none showed up. Are you that gullable to think they didnt? If so, I have insurance to sell you and Im not even an insurance agent. Here’s a great story:

Its pretty clear you have zero understanding of the sport. Its actually the opposite to being selfish. Its self sacrifice for the team. What Simo did is what any decent defender would do, Hate it when casual football fans such as yourself try and comment on the sport

“Lets not windowdress Simunic’s play as anything other than it was; a selfish move that put his whole team at risk.”

What Joe did was based on other people and their stupidity. Stimac had all our players in the box for the corner kick and Srna had a horrible corner kick that was 3 to 4 feet off the ground. A perfect storm if you will.

Now, how is what Joe did a selfish move? An example of a selfish move is what Zinedine Zidane did at World Cup 2006. He was so angry at what Marco Materazzi had to say to him on the field during the game that he took matters into his own hands and his actions spoke volumes into how much he truly cared about his teammates and his country. He cared about one person and that was himself! His actions were the actions of pure selfishness! There was 10 minutes left in the game before penalty kicks and he could not wait it out because he had to head butt someone for what they had said to him on field. All the actions were in his control and Zidane failed miserably in the act of putting your team and country ahead of you. He could not see the bigger picture because he is the bigger picture in his mind.

Joe made his decision for the team based on elements that brought him into the situation. The stupidity of our wonderful coach and Srna’s very poor corner kick put Joe into the situation of stopping Sulejmani in the manner that he did. If Stimac does not put us and him into that situation, than the events that occur do not happen. However, Joe stops Serbia from going up 2-1 and winning the game which is not selfish, it is unselfish.

Much respect for Ivanovich because HE KNOWS that Joe didn’t have any option and you can tell in the tackle he was just trying to stop him and not hurt him.

    @ Matesic

Thanks! You and I are on the same page on our posts. I really think some of our younger guns Rebic, Kovacic and hopefully Halilovic will add that speed and skill dimension that we are lacking. It needs to make up for the slowing of some of our long time players in Srna and Joe. Srna and Joe still have some to give for the repka and we also need these guys that have the experience.

As for Perisic, I missed a good part of the game in Brussels due to a bad internet feed…won’t make that mistake anymore! I think he does have the skill set to be a decent player but just hasn’t proved much yet…he barely started after the transfer to Wolfsburg last year although this year it looks like he’s playing more regularly. I’m not giving up on him just personally haven’t seen much yet.
And I agree with the HIMNA….I don’t care if you are tone def, you have the sing it! Gotta say I respect Sinisa only on his stand on the anthem, aside from that he’s an idiot. Play for your country…learn to sign the anthem.

    @ Soul Champ

I didn’t see much of the Brussels game due to a bad feed so I didn’t see how he played. But i’ve seen all of the other games in the last few years and he just hasn’t done much. More to do with his late of playing time for club – it seems to be finally changing this year as he’s started 3 of the 4 regular season games.

    @ DarkoCanada

Even though I’m a fellow Canadian I have to disagree about your Joe comments. Completely unselfish taking out Suljemani!! I’m sure he doesn’t want to be red carded but knew if he gets by him we could give up the game winner. I played for years and you have to understand a defenders mindset – you do what you have to do. And he did it lol…loved to see him walk out and not feel badly about it!!!

Given the bonehead tactics/line up I am very pleased with 1-1. Serbia dominated the flanks with young wingers and backs. We left Modric on his own in the middle with no options.

Modric as it in him to be captain, is class gives him inmate respect.

When the young guns click in with Modric and Mandzukic. Hrvatska will be kickin ass and taking names.

    @ Mali Ante

Perisic played great in Brussels, need to give him another shot. Vida will be needed as well.

This team is and was ruined by the mss alliance and By what pedigree did Stmac deserve the coaching spot by shitting on Htv on Bilic its easy just like us what we do shit on the tv but i would have fired him June 7 after the scotland loss calling up Sammir and others makes no sense what so ever and i hope when playoffs come we are not seeded and play a big team to get in. My team that should have played in Belgrad 3-5-2
Pletikosa Srna Carli Lovren Joe Milic Kovacic Modric Rakitic Eduardo Mandzo i think it would have worked and later switch to 4-4-2.
Belgium will be another game we play bunker in belgium will attack man imagine 2 home losses in one year never done in our 20 year history my team for that game would be this Pletikosa Vrsaljko Carli Lovren Strinic Perisic Modric Radosevic Kovacic Mandzo Rebic.

    My two cents:

“My heart says 2-1 Croatia, my brain says 1-1”

MY brain always wins for some reason. I expected this type of scoreline, but didnt expect this type of play. Stimac admitting that his first half strategy was to sit back and kick the ball around. Finishing the game with one chance on goal.

Stimac: makes Bilic look like a Capello.

    Simunic: Dude is a beast.

    Kovacic: needs to start

    Olic: never in midfield again

Lovren: As much as I bash him, dude played well

Mandzo: is our top striker, no one comes close

Rebic: Dude has a nose for the goal, hopefully he gets a chance in Serie A

Hey we got a win on our home soil and got a tie in Serbia. We officially knocked the Serbs out of the competition…so I’m happy with this.

Serbs have nothing to brag about, nothing to talk shit about. And we proved our nations superirority 😉 (yes I hope a Serb is reading this right now and their blood is boiling).

Because when it all comes down to it, we know that in the sports world… the only game that truely matters to us is football.

So bravo to the Repka! It would have been sweeter to win both … but we didn’t lose!

And I think I agree with what a few people hinted on which is, out of all of the “higher quality” players on the Repka, Rakitic UNDERPERFORMS the most. He kinda just wonders around out there.

And when Simunic committed that foul, I honestly thought a riot was going to break out and the game would be called. It probably would have if they didn’t have like 4000 police in the stands.

Which just goes to show you how fucked up Serbs are. Who needs 4000 police officers when their are NO AWAY FANS in your stadium? Morons.

Some folks are actually defending Simunic? No single player has the right to make a move that jeopardizes his entire team. The Croats were up by one man as well. It was stupid, selfish, and it was certainly not the only thing he could do. Until this team learns to work together better, they are not going to get anywhere, and it is a shame because there is talent on this team, however it just seems like over the last couple of games they have no heart.

1 – Modric IS world-class and would be a presence as captain.

2 – Mandzukic scored with a 40 meter sprint and cool slot finish from 12 METERS!

    General ratings;
Stimac: D : Stupid line up like I said before the game. 3 forward, 3 center backs, and Vukojevic gave us no ability to control the ball, which we needed in a hostile environment. Left us playing practically a man or two down as Olic/ Eduardo and Mandzo hung out up top.
Rakitic: C : he was bad, but I still think he is a classy player. His performance should largely be based on Stimac’s formation, which gave Rakitic zero passing outlets when he got the ball in the middle. Modric could barely keep possession of the ball he was so surrounded and Rakitic is good, but not as good as Modric. He was set up to fail.
Modric: A- : Great ball control in tough spots. Seemed like he was playing harder than anyone hustling and working on D also.
Mandzo; A- . Used his one opportunity masterfully. Awesome first touch to finish the play.
Srna: B : Great interception and brilliant pass to set up Mandzo. I don’t know what was going on with his free kicks that couldn’t get the ball off the ground.
    Perisic: C- . Didn’t do anything
Simunic: B : Played solid. Smart play to take the red card to prevent the goal. Even if its multi-game suspension, who cares. We spot in qualifying is now cemented.
    Olic/Eduardo: C : Didn’t even appear on the field.
    Pletikosa: A- :Continues solid play
Lovren/Corluka. I thought they did fine.
Kovacic: B : Threatening, but needs to piece it together. I can see why he gets hurt so much with those dribbling runs. But i love to each them

    Vlad,

I like your lineup, however, I would replace Badelj with Rakitic. Rakitic plays well in the middle while Badelj has not been any good this year.

On paper this is probably the best linup we have had since the 90’s. Yet they are playing the worst I have ever seen our Repka play. STIMAC NEEDS TO GO!

You are adding intelligence to the threads, it balances out some of the mindless sranje some smotani write. Hvala. Our Radosevic doing? Agreed we need a real motor in DM. Preferably one that can make a forward pass.

I love Simunic, he has bought heart, soul and physicality for years. I love Srna he has bought fire and a golden right for years as well. BOTH LOOK TIRED! SImunic is well into his 30’s and Srna runs with world-class Brazilians and hard working Ukranians for Shaktar, to cover his slow ass.

Kovacic, Rebic, Halilovic and Perisic are ready now. Perisic played great in Brussels and looks healthy.

Every time we hold on to old players going into a WC we look like sranje.

Not an extreme right winger like some of my fellow posters, BUT what’s up with not singing the HIMNA?

Modric can be our captain through his presence as a world-class footballer.

I say we let it all hang out against Belgium and match them in the midfield.

    @Ziva

I’m not saying you have to be an “emotional freak” to be captain, but you do have to be a solid leader and personable person who can tell other players what to do and motivate them. Meek little Modric isn’t going to motivate any players with his mumbling and and quite demeanor. I’d give the arm band to Simunic before anyone else. maybe Olic. Both players are on their way out of the sport though. Next generation captain is up in the air.

I think any result besides losing on the road is a positive result esp when you have a monkey as a president of the savez and a pig as a coach! Seriously if it wasent for the pure skill of certain players we really have no business being in the position were in. Stimac proves again and asain how bad of a coach he really is that line up was terrrible, we had three strikers on the field who all arent great at maintaining position how are you supposed to play. people write on this website about modric or rakitic not dictating play, no matter how good you are you need a proper system and players to play with, bottom line you need a coach not a imposter! The way were playing at the moment we can lose to anyone seedded or not seeded in the playoffs, you know the stimac is bad when after a year incharge he still dosent have a feel for his team, we played with two strikers in belgium and were outplayed we were outplayed in belgrade with three strikers time to finally play 4-2-3-1 and roll with it. Kovacic is our hole player he has to start no matter what rakitic bench and he has to find a proper defensive mid to partner modric its sad cause were playing way below our level.

    corluka lovern simunic strinic

    Badelj modric

    srna kovacic perisic

    mandzo

until halilovic and rebic prove themselves i think this is our best line up, i know badelj is not the fastest but his speed isnt’t that bad and ill take his brain over vuko legs any day, and i know srna is past his prime but corluka and srna were good on that side in bilic’s early years and we have no one else untill some of these kids develop. also i know perisic hasent proven himself yet but hes never played in his proper position which is a attacking mid not a wing mid in a 442 which he is not good at. This should be our line up going to the playoffs!

We played really attractive soccer and got good results until the heart break knock out. Not that I expect a heart break knock out but with the quality we have we should be able to get out of group stages and be competitive in the knock out rounds

Nice thing about cro, is they actually do show some skill, like scoring with very few chances, Mandza is big time. Serbs missed many opportunites, thats the difference, when ur not that good u cant score with ur chances. And there not that good. Mandza is that good and needs just a chance/service to score.

Mate – yes Srna can definitely play that position and very well…but Perisic hasn’t done enough in my opinion…he’s hot and cold but mostly medium, a filler, doesn’t do much either way!

in my opinion Perisic was a lot of hype and little to show…he hardly changes the outcome of a game and in that position, you have to.

I can see what you’re saying us not having wingbacks, I mean srna is for sure one, he already plays line to line, now the question is can perisic play line to line – get back in defense. I Like the system, bc you don’t need a defensive midfielder and you have three defenders so you’re strong in the back. All you need is the center backs to stall play long enough for the wingbacks to get back. Strinic could play there as well but it doesn’t seem like stimac cares for him and I’m not 100% sure he can play the role.

HIs time is not complete, what do you think Lovren would of done. Probably a bruce lee kick to the head. Maybe at the end of this qualifying but Simunic was a beast today and always plays solid for us. Regardless he won’t be playing at the belgium game due to the red card so Stimac can experiment with that.

Can you imagine if we draw a tough team in the playoffs.

    Yes, Srna was brutal today.

Regarding left back…I haven’t seen a lot of him but from what I have seen I really like Strinic at left back, am I missing something?

3-5-2 is a great but complex system, if you don’t have the players it’s just impossible. We currently don’t have two wing backs (or however you want to call them). Jarni and Roberto Carlos played that position amazing but to have one per side is really difficult to find.

Matesic, well said. Like the lineup but not a Perisic fan…he’s done absolutely nothing for club or country yet. Rebic might be the better option eventually and possibly right now. Kovacic is great now and should be a key player for us for years to come.

Missing a good def mid though…Rakitic doesn’t have the motor to fill that role and can’t play the wing either.

Mate – agree with the Mateo comment. He adds the dimension of speed and skill we are missing. I really think Rebic will do the same in attack. The should play Mateo a little further up – go with a 4-2-3-1 with Mandzo alone in attack and even try Mateo playing behind him.
As for burning the flag, they boo’d the anthem to death so burning the flag is just another example of their inexcusable behaviour – like I said in my earlier post…eliminating them is sweet.
By the way, anyway love the Mandzukic hand to the ears celebration after that well finished goal??? Loved the silence……

Simunic has given his heart and soul to the repka. AND his time is complete. This level is to fast for him at this point in his career. Respect to all his service over the years.

Srna needs to step down and gets a half going forward. Slow as Christmas.

Kovacic reminds of Boban a bit and could be our version of Isco. Perisic has his legs back. Rebic and Haliliovic got the goods. Mandzukic is a beast and Modric sets the table.

I am in deep inquiry into how big of a smotan Stimac really is ?

The emperor is not wearing any clothes !

Lovren is ready to play CB. Need a left back at all times.

Looking forward to flooding the midfield against Belguim.

A few other things. Mateo is going to be a stud in the future, realistically the best dribbler on our team, now just needs to add more to his game…and if stimac plays him as a defensive midfielder, he really should be fired. He needs to be more in the final third, again, 3-5-2, why not

Terrific terrific terrific ball from srna to mandzukic, and nice cool finish from mandzukic, exactly what you want to see from a striker

Can’t hate on Stimac for the lineup, he basically put his hardest working players on the pitch, added a striker and hoped for the best…I don’t know if Perisic is in game form yet and he can be a liability running back; not starting mateo probably had to do with the fact that he plays pretty much only in the center of the park and vukojevic needed to play cause he runs his ass off and is the only defensive midfielder we had available besides Ademi….not that we necessarily needed a defensive midfielder (or ever) but it was the safe bet

To reiterate my comment on Big Joe today – he was the our best player. Played solid and likely saved the game with that monster tackle. I went nuts when he took him out!

Bobby V – agree with the Stimac comment. He doesn’t have a clue…I was reading on Jutarnji that the game plan was to soak up the pressure – ok maybe to a point but to come off like that he’s some master tactician? Gimme a break. We defended pretty well today but it was an awful first half….Serbia is far from Spain.

Thanks Bobby, as per Horvat’s question…years ago I would have said Ivic but I don’t follow their league anymore…I’m a busy dad.one thing I will say is we have coaches but for some one reason or another politics is interfering! Croatia produces great players which means we must have great teachers/coaches. When you mix people that are their for interest an power you take away from the game. Many people think Zvonimir Boban would have been a great HNS president but the one thing he didn’t have was he isn’t corrupt…see how screwed that is? As far as a coach. I’d say my best bet would be for someone that had a team that performed better than they should have…that’s the sign of a well prepared team! It’s not always the better team that wins, many times the better prepared team wins!

It didn’t matter who we fielded in that first half. Stimac handcuffed our players by telling them to win the ball and dump it back deep into their zone.

He was playing for the tie all the way. He wanted to eliminate Serbia in front of their home fans. After the Scotland loss, it was second place in his mind all the way.

Ironically, with Kovacic, Perisic, and Jelavic in the lineup and permission from Stimac to play a proper way, we might have won the game – the flow started to change after those subs went in.

Poor Olic and Eduardo were left to play more like midfielders in the first half – we had 3 forwards on the field but absolutely no desire to try and feed them the ball. Their job was to win the ball and dump it. Olic had a horrible back pass that alsmost cost us.

Very lucky to tie – nice dummy on the corner by the Serbs that they hit the post on. If Sulejmani started the match, we would have lost. His crosses were excellent (set up the goal) and caused us fits.

Well, 2 friendlies against Belgium and Scotland before we see who we draw in November.

@ Ziva – agreed about the South Korea trip – what a fuckin waste.

About a minute after Simunic got his red card, a throw-in was awarded to Croatia. Srna had the ball amd threw it to the ground with both hands very hard – he was pissed at himself for the poor corner (his 3rd in a row) which forced Simunic to take the foul.

Simunic saved Croatia – he locked us into the second spot with that move. Croatia Vs Antwerp and Jarac were the only ones to recognize this. Even Ziva screwed up by commenting “Simunic being Simunic” – wow, really surprised that only a few saw that he sacrificed himself for the good of the team. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Also, people here seem to think Luka is an attacking player…he’s a player that starts the play, organizes the midfield and does a fabulous job at holding the middle. He is not a behind the forward attacker, not sure why people expect to be, he never has been!

we are headed for the playoffs so lets hope that the draw will be kind to us. however, the belgium match at home will be a good chance to build up some confidence. a loss at home in that match and things will get tense leading up to the playoffs. a nice result there should keep everyone happy

First time post for me. I’ve been reading the writeups and posts of the site for a year or so and appreciate the good work in keeping us informed about the repka etc…I found many of you post some good stuff and great links to news….the rest of you are entertaining to say the least!

As for my two cents…it disgusting the way the anthem was booed/whistled…fully expected but completely classless. The result and knocking them out of contention was retribution enough for me.

We completely sat back and were on our heels in the first half….lucky to escape halftime 0-0.

Kovacic provided a great spark and is an absolute must going forward…his quickness and skill is a nice addition…Rakitic plays out of position for the repka and has played poorly regardless for us as long as he’s played for us.

I think Rebic gets a shot and he will be a welcome addition in attack and good for years to come…again providing much needed speed!

As for Joe’s tackle…classic! He had to do it given Srna’s poor corner(s)….He played solid today.

Hopefully we get a favourable draw in the playoff but I have faith….Zivili!

Ranking of second-placed teams. This is Wikipedia information.

Because one group has one team fewer than the others, matches against the last-placed team in each of the six-team groups are not included in this ranking. As a result, eight matches played by each team will count for the purposes of the second-placed table.

The eight best runners-up will be determined by the following parameters in this order:
    1.Highest number of points
    2.Goal difference
    3.Highest number of goals scored

Croatia played 7 games, won 5 of them, two draws, they didn’t lose(Scotland is 6th at this moment, the results of the games against them don’t count. We have 17 points at this time. At this time we’re the number 1 of the number 2. We can’t afford to end last, then we won’t even make it to the playoffs.

    Sixth-placed team

    A Croatia 7 5 2 0 11 4 +7 17 1,6 Scotland
    G Greece 6 4 1 1 7 4 +3 13 1,3,6 Liechtenstein
    F Russia 6 4 0 2 8 2 +6 12 1,3,6 Luxembourg
    I France 6 3 2 1 8 4 +4 11 1,3
    D Romania 6 3 1 2 9 10 -1 10 1,3,6 Andorra
    H Montenegro 6 2 3 1 6 8 -2 9 1,3,6 San Marino
    C Sweden 5 2 2 1 9 7 +2 8 1,3,6 Faroe Islands
    B Bulgaria 6 1 4 1 5 5 0 7 1,3,6 Malta
    E Norway 5 1 2 2 4 6 –2 5 1,3,6 Cyprus
1 – Team may potentially finish first in its group
3 – Team may potentially finish third or worse in its group
6 – Sixth-placed team in group may change (so ranking of second-placed team may improve or worsen even if it does not play)

I understand why Vukojevic was in the game. But, Kovacic needs to be in there. Going forward I rather have Raketa on the bench. Place Vuko at DMF against teams that will not sit behind the ball and make sure Modric and Kovacic are on the field together.

A better starting 11 would of made more sense…vuko is garbage rakatic man..guys no words … Kovacic and modric need to be always mid we need more creativeaty through CDM and CAM and all way to ST.. This game showed how 2d we can be without right players to expose wholes with passes and making those tantalizing runs. Stimac made a awful decision to try to beat Serbia through strikers ..than apose of midfield. Midfield control dictates pressure and pace of game poor performance by croatia but Evan more poor decision making on starting 11 by stimac.

@Toronto……not sure. I guess a lot would depend on the other teams. But, i think we are in the top four barring two losses and all the other teams winning (which wont happen)

Where are the Rakitic defenders. I know there are some here who got their underwear all wet when they heard Raketa wasnamed captain at Sevilla. Yet another game where he underperformed for the repka. he might be the only diaspora player who plays worse for the repka than club side. Usually the diapsora players play very well for country, but not headball Rakitic. Then again, can we really blame him with him knowing the amount of narodnjake bars he could hit tonight in BG. Shit, as I am typing this he might already be in one.

It looked to me like Simunic first backtracked or hesitated for a second or two, and then decided to charge straight ahead. I’d have to see a reply from a different angle. Would also like to see whether he was positioned properly in the first place (why was he so far back)? And doesn’t he usually jump to the box on corners?

If he did not backtrack/hesitate, then he did the right thing plowing forward, but he could’ve done a much better job on the Serb.

This is a good result for us. The Serbs had far more chances than us. So at least we will finish second. Even if we had won today, we would have needed a win with a few goals against the Belgiums.
Stimac has to make some changes. Kovacic has to be in the starting eleven. He and Modric are technical our best players.

Some players didn’t play on their best place. We also have to admit that there’s not much choice. Lovren is a good central defender but he lacks some technical skills to play LB.
Olic can still be good as a striker. As a right winger, he just isn’t good enough.

About the red card of Simunic. I don’t understand what the hell happened. It was a corner for Croatia. Why do you keep one of your most dangerous player with the head and also one of the slowest player behind. It should have been Kovacic who was waiting there. He would probably been faster on the ball and wouldn’t have to take a red card. Joe did the right thing after all. If he would have done nothing, we would have lost this game for sure.

And Ziva. Why all the hate? I’m starting to think you’re Bosko Balaban and that you’re angry with Stimac because he doesn’t call you up anymore.

So, these are all the teams that could finish in 2nd place:
Group B: Bulgaria, Czech Rep., Armenia, Denmark
    Group C: Sweden
    Group D: Romania, Hungary
    Group E: Norway, Albania, Iceland
    Group F: Russia, Israel
    Group G: BiH, Greece
Group H: England, Ukraine, Crna Gora
    Group I: France

We would be on of the 4 seeded teams, so we would avoid France, England and Swededn if those teams finish in 2nd place.

It had to done by Simunic. Not a wrong decison, it all started with Srna.

@BostonCro…..I don’t blame Simunic for the tackle. he knew if that half mujo gets by him then he would be one-on-one with Pletikosa. he could have gotten him in a different manner to avoid what likely will be a 2 or 3 game ban.

How can anyone blame Simunic? are you guys serious? He’s the last man, his opponents twice his speed and going full sprint towards Hrvatska’s goal…he gambled as he should have and lost…it happens all the time!

When you’re a man up why do you need to send 9 players into the box? the corner was weak, the Serbs cleared it and there was noone between the Serbs forward and Simunic…thats defending 101…you have a man more and leave a 1 on 1 situation???

Well, the next two qualifiers mean zero now. Now they can cap the half mujo Halilovic.

Belgium has this thing wrapped up. All they need is a point in the remaining two games.

This result is fine. A tie in BG is good. Look at Holland, they tied on the road today. I didn’t think we could win in BG anyway, but what has me worried is they level of play we have no witnessed in the last few qualifiers.

On a personal level, my parlay is alive and well. i put money on a belgium win, us to tie, Mexico to win and US to tie tonight.

  • BostonCro says:

The frustration is because the first half line-up was a shit show, then we had a man advantage for last 20 minutes and blew it on a poor corner by Srna and an even worse decision by Simunic. We had the momentum with us and could not take advantage of the gift.

In any event, no gurantee that even with a win we would overtake Belgium.

Jarac is right. Suljemani was clear to charge towards goal. And Joe had to commit the professional foul.

If Srna didn’t take that poor corner, this would not have happened. I mean all his corners were just so poor, as they failed to beat the first man.

I was worried about this game and was hoping for at least a tie which is still good. I wish though that Modric would pick it up and dictate the game. Have not seen that from him yet.

Simunic played well but my feed went down at around the 60 minutes mark and unsure what happened with the red card. Hopefully CSR has video. Seems he had no choice base on some comments.

We make the playoffs and unfortunately we have a good chance of drawing a tough team. They always make it difficult for themself and in the process give me a heart attack…..everytime.

I dont think have a lack of will…this game under these circumstances is extremely hard…like in a pressure cooker! they got a result that was respectable, its like scoring an ugly goal…you still scored it! I dont think the Serbs wanted it more…I think the problem is with preparation and the lack of it the team has! you’re making a comment with 5 minutes left that the Serbs want it more…I highly doubt that, psychologically they have more reason to want to win at their home…and that energy they get from being in their own stadium helps…in any sport. I think the guys played ugly but for the most part defended their goal well. I dont think the Serbs wanted it more I think they were better prepared…we had no answer to their pressure…we didnt slow the play down, umiri igru…”kill the play” or “momentum”…its an old tactic that wasnt used…they werent prepared…I think they didnt have the right answers and lineup!

Not picking on them – our coach has them playing in non-natural positions.

Plus, it is a toss up between Eduardo or Olic, but Eduardo has a yellow, which is why I would replace him first.

Pretty comical watching Olic and Eduardo trying to play midfield.

sorry to say it but its games like this where we need 2 way players, which is why Vukojevic started…I dont like him at all but when you have guys like Rakitic that cant play both directions this is what you get. I know he’s not the only one but he’s regularly a defensive liability! Modric is doing his best to first protect his own goal now we need others to help in the midfield…I think we will be better in the second half, well, at least I hope they sort things out! defending against Serbia at their home field with the overwhelming support they are getting isnt easy at all…

I’d like to see 1 or 2 changes, particulary in midfield and maybe take out one forward and replace him with another midfielder!

we are ok… maybe we get a couple chances second half and put something in
ya big joe, always getting ragged on, he is a cagey old vet now and we need that experience… stipe solid as per usual

interesting stuff in group B, armenia beat czech republic… we could get a bulgaria or czech in playoff, as i think surely we should be one of the top 2nd place seeds
that seems more realistic then scotland tieing belgium and we make up the scoring diff

Many Croatians did things, ended up in jail or dead…committed suicide rather than fall into the hands of Partizani…my father’s family suffered greatly because of the government, people sometimes did what many would say is irrational…but its only irrational to those that haven’t walked a day in the shoes of the person affected. I never judge a person for their fight, if they believe in their cause who am I to judge…we Croatians should know this better than most!

@DarkoCanada – if you read a little about what Busic did, he made one HUGE mistake thet ended up killing a police officer which he was greatly affected by. He stood in the middle of the trg in ZG during a time when you couldnt protest…and he protested, he did the same wherever he was…if there ever was a meaning of “Za Dom”…he defined it!

If any of our players had any balls they would dedicate this game to Busic. But, we all know they don’t and would rather celebrate by hitting a bar/club in BG that plays narodnjake.

And if any of you are asking and wondering who Zvonko Busic is, then your parents/friends/family/associates have really failed you.

@ Ziva – If they do start both Mandza and Jelavic I guarantee you its because they intend to attack from the outside. Both of them are one touch finishers that they hope will get on the end of a cross. The Cedo’s have a strong defense so the opportunities will be limited, especially for through balls…Mandzo and Jela will simply hold up the balls, give them off and wait for their chance on crosses. your comment about Jelavic was right but I think one thing he does well is anticipate…most of his goals were from his first touch…he gets into the right positions and first times it.

I’d be shocked if we go with jelavic. You can’t play two forwards (Jela and Mandza) who are unable to create on their own. With Mandza you at least have a physical presence who can play wide, be a target man and will apply pressure. You get none of that with Jelavic.

Shit, Kalinic has done more for the national side than Jelavic.

I just got back from my annual stay in Croatia. Good times. I did my typical red-neck stuff. I ate janje and cevape, and got my daily dose of the TV show “Prosjaci I Sinovi” which was on every evening.

Anyway about this game tomorrow. The serbs have a good side, boosted with the likes of Tadic, Matic, and Duricic. Plus they got Sulejmani off the bench.

But I think our players have more experience playing in high pressure matches at club and international level. This will be the key difference. I think we can get at least a point here.

Hope I’m wrong as fuck, but, two players that will keep us from winning tomorrow will be Nemanja Matic and Lazar Markovic – they are in excellent form.

Stimac is already saying that he’s happy finishing second (to cover his ass) – in a way, he’s right. If we can’t qualify in a home and home against a country seeded below us, we don’t deserve to go.

…and in our current form, that will be a challenge.

We’ve done it before to get to a major tournament (vs. Ukraine, Greece) – doesn’t really matter how you get to Brazil.

4,000 policemen guarding our players during the training session today in Belgrade. Never thought about the Serb fans interfering with the match tomorrow, but, I guess it’s a possiblity – especially with the fact that they have very little chance.

I wouldn’t want Bilic or Stimac, ideally.

I’ll be happy when the HNS opens up it’s wallet and pays for a halfway decent foreign coach. The NT manager role shouldn’t be a proving ground for up and coming managers (Bilic & Stimac), we’re a consistently ranked top 10 NT, right? Let’s go and get a top notch coach who can nuture, manage and guide all the talent we have the proper way, not this bullshit that Stimac pulls and Bilic did, to a lesser extent.

Listen, if we had some top notch coach working abroad, it would be one thing, but the fact is we don’t and we should be looking outside Croatia.

And all you that have Niko Kovac on the tip of your tongue… Do you think other ‘big boy’ NT’s hire a guy with a few years experience as an assistant for an Austrian team and then just took the helm of a U-21 team? No. Sorry.

@Stipe – right now, Belgium has scored 13 goals and given up 2 for a +11 rating. Croatia has scored 10 and given up 4 for a +6 rating.

    Belgium leads us by five.

If we beat Serbia and Belgium by a goal, and Belgium wins by a goal against Scotland, we would have a differential of +8, while Belgium would be sitting at +11.

That means that going into the last game against Scotland, if Belgium wins by a goal agianst Wales, we would need to beat Scotland by 5 goals to qualify directly.

Qualifying by goal differennce is not likely to happen. There is a better chance of a Belgian slip-up to help our chances of finishing first.

    @ Ziva

Dude you have to take statements on here as opinions nothing more nothing less. I wasn’t reading into the “mindset” of our players I was simply stating that based on their tactical approach and lack of focus it seemed to me that against Scotland the vatreni felt a goal would drop for them without full effort. If you watched the game it was very tedious, the Scots weren’t playing incredible ‘D’ its just that Cro wasn’t challenging them enough. They played very predictably in attack and it was relatively easy for the Scots to defend. Add in the fact that Sammir started and played a lot of minutes and my argument has some legs. Why else would you start Sammir unless you thought it would be an easy game?

For tomorrow’s game I just want to see some creativity in attack. Even in the home game against Serbi me our first goal came off a Kolorov mistake. We need to craft some goals, something that Cro hasn’t been doing on the regular this campaign.

@Colin O’Haravic: Very Interesting article. I believe it. My friend is Serb , he told me that Marakana will not be sold out by any means. And he also said to me two weeks ago, that the fans will enjoy watching players such as Srna, Mandzo, and Modric, also Kovacic if he plays because according to the Serbian newspapers , Dejan Stankovic is a big supporter of Kovacic , Kovacic himself said that Stankovic looked out for him in Inter and was a big brother type figure.

I doubt they will be cheering every time Modric touches the ball or make a good play, but than again, the atmosphere will be nothing like it was in Zagreb in march . Asonovic said in 1999 that the game in August at Marakana, Asonovic said that the atmosphere was electric, that he couldn’t here himself think. He said that was the loudest he ever heard a crowd. Marakana is a lot bigger and nicer than Maksimir. Asonovic also added that the crowd was rowdy because it was against Croatia and also at that time the Milosevic and NATO bombings.

I know what goal differential means, but what does Croatia have to do besides win all three games?

How we are in basketball is how the Serbs are with nogomet. You guys think Anzulovic should take over? Jury is out for me. In the end, your team has to have some talent for a coach to have somewhat of a fair shot. Reports indicate that Draper is from the deeeeeep south of Dalmacija.

Regarding tomorrows game, I see a 2:1 Croatia win with both goals from Manzookick and Moderich. Their defense is unbelievable and ours isnt the nightmare eerybody thinks it is. I expect Lovren to play the game of his life with Carli, Srna and Joe. Once Jedvaj is on the A team, I’ll sleep easier. Schildo should be on the field like always as the dude always brings it in big games.

I hope there’s not a blackout this time around.

F1 – Corluka is probably the best skilled back we have at the moment. If we have issues at LB and have people that can cover his position (which worked against turkey) then be uncomfortable and pick up the slack in the area we lack skill. That’s what it’s all about in my eyes. Some people look at it differently obviously…

Best case scenario is Serbia implodes and we win by a few goals. I know it’s a little hopeful, but Serbia’s very capable of that. It happened in Turkey when we got up early and the home crowd started turning on their team, particularly their keeper.

    I’m laying a $50 parlay on a Hrvatska win and a Scotland/Belgium tie!

I’m so jacked for this one!
I think i need an even bigger pair of homer-glasses!

It won’t be sold out. Apparently a lot of fans are pissed at Mihajlovic. Found this articel kind of funny. Not sure how serious/real it is though. http://inserbia.info/news/2013/09/i-will-cheer-for-croatia-they-will-win-by-three-goals-milojko-pantic/

They reduced capacity for the game because interest from the Serbs in Beograd has dropped since they will not make world cup. If they were in first place or fighting for first; the place would be sold out. Nothing to do with security concerns.

Looks like they reduced the capacity for tomorrow’s game to about 40,000 or so due to security concerns (or to save face because it looks like the game would not have sold out lol).

Explain to me how our players “thought a goal would come easy.”

We played bad. Nothing more than that.

I just love it when people are able to read the mindset of a player from the couch watching it on tv.

Anyone see Kranjcar get picked by O’l Arry at QPR. Talk about man love for Niko! Dude’s got a major hard-on for a player that I haven’t seen do shit in three years! lol

The key to 3 points against the Serbs is Luka. He better play well, no excuses. Rakitic has to put on his proper boots too. As someone said the tactics have to change drastically from that abysmal Scotland match. In that game all of our players thought a goal would come easy which it didn’t.

Let’s see 3 points for Hrvatska and move on to the next game.

    Idemo!

@Ziva – I remember a PG that played for University of New Orleans a few years ago named Bo McCalebb. He was a pretty good scorer. The New Orleans paper ran a story one day about him playing for Partizan and being a member of the Macedonian national team.
I guess it’s a fairly common practice for guys who are playing overseas & have no chance of breaking into the US national team.
I’m going to start playing pick up games again & try to break into the Croatian team. I’ll be the Joe Simunic of basketball! 😉

    @Nije
I would not give thumbs down to Carli. He was being honest and confidence is everything in these type of games. Ziva makes a valid point.

    @Maro
Coluka and Simunic in the middle is good. People like to crap on Simunic but he has been consistently solid for us.

Starting Mandzukic with Dudu or Olic? I think both serve a purpose…Olic, although not a very skilled player definitely puts pressure on defenders and can cause them to make mistakes…Dudu can score from almost anywhere inside the 18 provided he gets the service… I dont mind either starting!

Croatia have the option to play many combinations, I dont think thats a problem…I’ve seen something different with this team than I did under Bilic. Even though I didnt always agree with Bilic’s systems or lineup and formation we normally saw a team that played as a unit…they were pretty consistent. Under Stimac I’ve seen him publicly call out players, make some interesting additions (some very good) and even unpredictable decisions …ie starting Kovacic vs Srbija…that was risky but ended up being a good move. The real difference is I think the team is even better now but either dont feel the same unity or just lack in management…how can we explain the poor performances with better players? We almost lost against Wales, we were terrible against Scotland, looked like a nightmare against Liechtenstein, weren’t interested against Portugal…thats a coaching/management issue!

I think if we had better leadership we’d be in first and this game would purely only be about wanting to hammer our enemy…we’re hanging on for dear life when I think we shouldn’t be in this position!

@maro……he has been on the national team for a few years now. if Ukic could ever produce for the repka, he and Draper would be a nice one-two PG combo.

Anyone watching Eurobasket today. Cro is playing Georgia and barely hung on to win. Tomic decided to show up in the final 30 seconds with key free throws, a hoop and good D on the last possesion to win by 1.

We still look bad, but at least got a win. Draper was our best player.

@ nije bitno – I agree on the back line. You know Srna will be at RB. I like Corluka & Simunic in the middle, but Lovren is in good form in EPL. If he can’t get time in the center, then play him at LB.
At this point, I’m not a proponent of Vida getting a start.
I think Simunic still plays pretty well in his mid 30s. He has looked solid recently.

If he has overcome his brain farts on the pitch and matured into the CB most of us thought he would be then i think Dejan Lovren needs to be on the field come tomorrow. I read his comment this morning and i want a player like that on the field.

“”Nije još sigurno hoću li igrati, ali neće mi biti lako zbog neprirodne pozicije. No, sve ću dati za reprezentaciju i na lijevom boku”, rekao je Dejan Lovren u prolazu.

Don’t know if anyone remembers, but after Corluka played LB in Turkey that one game, he told the coach when asked again to play LB that he wasn’t comfortable playing it.

In my opinion, when you play for your country especially Hrvatska, you need to be ready to play any position if that’s what the team needs of you, even if it isn’t your natural position.

    Thumbs up for Lovren

    Thumbs down for Carli

if Stimac is playing Srna at RB and Corluka/Simunic at CB, i’d much rather see Lovren at LB over Vida…

love the prediction ante. i second the scoreline. i know the last two matches have been lacklustre but some of our big guys have been in good club form lately so i see them making the difference. we score two in the first hour, give up one late to make it interesting and then hold on.

let’s get dudu in there. we need more play through the middle of the park and he will help with that playing behind mandzukic. i hope we don’t simply focus on srna-mandzukic crosses in from the right flank. that didnt work so well against scotland. let the midfield and eduardo play with the ball at their feet and attack that way. have fun watching it tomorrow, wherever you are!
