July 1st, 2019 marks the one year anniversary of Croatia defeating Denmark in the Round of 16 at the World Cup. As well all know, the match went into a penalty kick shootout where the Vatreni prevailed 3-2 over the Danes.
Subašić was the man of the hour as he blocked not one, not two, but three Danish penalty kicks to clear the way for Croatia’s shooters. Running it back and watching the highlights, the Vatreni did not have a good penalty shootout. Milan Badelj missed Croatia’s first chance and Josip Pivarić had his fourth round attempt thwarted by Schmeichel. In any given penalty shootout, making three out of five shots usually will not get the job done. However, Subašić stood on his head and blocked the last two round of Danish kicks to pave the path for Rakitić’s game winner.
On top of that, Subašić blocked two out of five kicks from Russia in the quarterfinal round; meaning out of the 10 penalty kicks he faced in shootouts at the World Cup, he blocked 50%. That is an insane number from a goalie in soccer!
It’s too bad he couldn’t add one more to the list. France.
Wha? Subasic was hurt in the final. He could not move well.
Why do people make revisionist history?
Subasic was the man it was a step too far for him in the final unfortunately
Everyone had to be on top of their game that day and it was not the case for many of the players
Subasic was a hero the whole tournament. Then a zero in the finale.
here they come

Anything is better than saturnus
It was a cool time until a bus of Serbs would pull into town on vacation. I remember in the hills above Petrcane there was an old world war two bunker. That should be made into a disco. Not many know of it but i do.
https://heavy.com/sports/2019/07/christian-pulisic-parents-ethnicity-family-dad-mom/
It actually was a cool time. The war obviously sucked. But as a Croat you’ll never get the coastline to yourself like that again. The American and western Europe tourists were years away from Croatia showing up on their vacation map. And it was still too soon for the Germans, Hungarians, Italians etc to come back. As the old Croatian tourism commercial once said,,”the Mediterranean as it once was”… Although it’s actually the Adriatic (good job govt tourism)… But regardless will never be like that again
@The truth
LOL
American women win the World Cup, American men lose the Gold Cup….
Ahhh hotel pinja…. Brings back some memories of disco max and aquabar and whatever else it was called….
Those were some of the days…injury shutdown my playing career and i was back in the zadar area and didn’t have to train for the first time i could remember. The war has just ended, the refugees has been starting to go back home, and hotel pinja was reopened.
The disco at pinja was really jumping on a Saturday night. Tourism had not yet hit post war. Nothing but some Croats and some diaspora trying to order drinks
Much nicer than the eventual British invasion with things like garden festival
Never watched such shitty soccer before in my life .
These lesbians need to check themselves no way they can compete with the men’s game .
The God of Pusilic is coming . It was nice however to see that French fuck on the field brought back some nice memories .
Now why can’t the US men’s team be as good as the women’s????
I am from hotel Pinja.
Nice anon u keep on believing that it was a half Serb that took Croatia to the final of the wc
Dinarics are part mongoloid as well.
Elvis anon was alluding to that Suba is a Croatian with a Serbian surname which is not true
Well if u don’t accept he may be a vlach he then would be regarded as a pravoslavac not necessarily a Serb
Elvis not sure what part of Croatia your from but every zagorac knows this skin tanned or not
@suba
Lol the Vlachs were resettled by the
Turks to repopulated abandoned lands.
They were put in Serbia but don’t think
Croatia , They are known for their tan
Appearance and dark hair. Croats are of
The Dinaric race regardless of Surname.
Clippers and Lakers matchups are gonna be fun to watch next year. Lakers just signed Cousins for a year too.
@Maminjo I like the idea. It’d be great to see both of them get their careers back on track and fulfill their potentials. Both Pjaca and Krovinović have time to turn things around. Another good thing about them is that they don’t have attitudes. They’re probably going to be as focused as possible to make a big return this next season.
Restricted free agent center Ivaca Zubac has agreed to a four-year, $28M deal to stay with the Los Angeles Clippers, Excel Sports agents Jeff Schwartz and Mike Lindeman tell ESPN.
Good move by Krovinović.
This is a make or break point for him in his career, especially after a potential career ending ACL injury.
If there is anyone who will give him chances, it’s Slaven Bilić.
This is similar to when Rebić’s career was up in the air, and then he went to Niko Kovač’s squad and was given a chance.
Hopefully, Krovinović succeeds.
If I’m Marko Pjaca, I would give Krovinović a call to see if I can get in on this. Pjaca and Krovinović were friends growing up. Pairing up at WBA would be good with Bilić there.
Krovinović signs with West Bromwich Albion. Hopefully a new start for him.
There are no croats with Serb surnames
Subasic dad is not a real Serb he is very likely of vlach origin
Anon don’t you know your Croatian history
Hezonja wearing #44 in Portland in honor of Dražen Petrović.
At 24 he may finally be ready to fulfill his potential.
I wonder if CJ Mcallum can give him some pointers on how to handle the rock?
Hezonja has to run point if and ever he will play for Croatia.
1- we have no guard.
2- we have better options 2-4.
He just needs to fine tune his handle and quickness.
He can run and jump but needs that Stephen Curry agility training.
He is too uptight after lifting all these weights these past 4 years.
Sorry Dinaric
It’s not Serb or Croat dna, it’s Dianric
DNA. The people the Croatian road warriors
Asmilated with.
@suba
What about Croats with Serbs surnames?
Subasic doesn’t save those penalties if he wasn’t half Serb.
Djokovic’s mom is Croatian, and Djokovic himself is a product of the Croatian tennis system (being a student of Nikola Pilic).
He’s always going to play whole “it’s the same thing” card, as he is a mix of both.
Just like any half American, half Canadian would say…Just like any half Czech, half Slovak would say…etc etc.
All these neighboring countries are very different, despite sharing similar languages and pop culture.
Dude is half Croatian, and would not be a good tennis player if he was a full Serb (and he knows this). He’s not going to go against his mom and root against Croatia at the World Cup, or avoid vacations on the Croatian coast, etc.
He tries to satisfy his Serbian fans by trying to convince them that it’s all the same. It’s not…but that’s okay. You can be a fan of Croatia. Most people in the world are.
If Djokovic was a real Yugoslav why does he have a problem with Kosovo
All Serbs are Chetniks never forget this plain fact people
On a different topic, let’s all root for Petra Martic in her next match at Wimbledon! Time for her I think.
Djokovic and Ivanisevic are both Yugoslav brothers that would still be part of the same country if not for Cetniks. What the Serbs don’t understand is that not all Serbs are Cetniks, some are as Yugoslav as the Croats are, and that explains their over the top reactions to this partnership of two Yugoslav brothers.
Maybe they can make a doco called “Still brothers,” they can start to repair what the ultimate villian Drazen Petrovic broke.
Ivanisevic is on good terms with Vlade Divac as well!
Lets not fool ourselves ..our friendly neighborhood cetniks love our cro cousins in cro..probably jealous all the A list hollywood actors enjoy our coastline +culture during the summer party months..the plate full of hate never ends.

Disappointed Mario went to a guard heavy team I was hoping his experiment with the Knicks where he had a few great games at PG might parlay into a spot in the back court.
The kid has as much talent as anyone just wish he had court sense and brains…does dragan get another shot elsewhere?
Luka samanic looked ok his first summer league game people are impressed with his quickness for a 6’11” guy
Talk is cheap, but flying to vegas to watch Croatian basketball vs Nba summer league teams is not. As a true supporter, I’ll be there…probably try to win my annual spot at the WSOP while I’m at it.
@ maminjo
Maybe your right. Not sure. There is a fair chance bojan will become a 12 pt, 2 rebounds,2 assist guy in Utah. And 20mm/yr is high for that. Barnes also probably overpaid. And reddick is on a low risk 2yr deal rather than 4 yr. Regardless, Utah will be the team i likely root for next year
Hezonja is in am interesting spot. It’s the first time he’ll be part of a semi competent organisation
How good are the Jazz going to be?
With a new look western Conference are they legit contenders?
I coached against Mike Conley Jr in HS.
He is a world class trained competitor. His father gave him good genes and great foundational training.
Spida Mitchell is a super star.
Rudy Gobert is a premier rim protector.
Bojan has earned this opportunity to shine.
NBA is about fit for 99% of the players.
Bojan is playoff type player. He may get tired during the over stretched 82 regular season. But playoffs, when you need big shots, he is as valuable as they come.
Fun to watch a košarkaš playing in May in the NBA business end.
Also hope he inspires the next generation.
Still praying for lead guard to manifest for us!
No way. Bojan is not overpaid in the least bit.
Bojan is one of the best 3-point shooters in the league…but on top of this, he is a DYNAMIC shooter and scorer.
Most of these shooters who stretch the floor, are unable to pump fake and put the ball on the floor (and attack the basket) when the defence comes. Bojan can do exactly that. He can also shoot as a spot-up shooter AND off the dribble (which a lot of players cannot do).
He’s also a very capable defender now, as opposed to several years ago. He also moves around very well with or without the ball, allowing him to play in any system without issue. He’s a complete perimeter player, has a great attitude, can take over the scoring for long stretches, and can play in any system.
Guys like this don’t come cheap at all.
Pascal Siakam is another complete player (who is a PF) and will probably get a $25 million per season extension.
Meanwhile, the other one-dimensional sharpshooters like JJ Redick just go $14 millon per year (at age 35)…and Harrison Barnes (who is a very poor man’s version of Bojan) just signed deal at over $21 million per season.
Congrats to Bojan. I’m happy to see him get the big pay day. For a while, i thought he had developed himself into a real nba player and was undervalued. I think this contract probably overvalues him given still only ok defense and not much other than points in the box score. But, a lot of guys are getting silver contracts, so for the jazz who struggle to get free agents and needed another floor spacer and scorer, this was a good gamble. It’ll leave bojan playing a lot of 4 which will be a challenge for him but with the league going smaller hopefully doable most nights
Pickings are pretty slim when we are chatting about our keeper from a year ago,and women’s footy!
How about some banter on RECENT events like Bojan …that’s bogdanovich not krkic signing the biggest contract in cro sports history 73million US for 4 years
Bernard gin and tomic pretty much played dead at his match vs tsonga at Wimbledon, and a few aussies are blaming his Croat heritage.
Funny how they never mentioned Bogut or Viduka’s heritage when they were doing well for their country.
Cu14- yup it reminds of our last game vs England where we lost 2-1.
Semis and PK’s. England’s Achilles.
Their striker should’ve taken it. She was in the zone today.
England loses 2-1 in the Women’s WC semi. Remind you of anything? 🙂
That goal was shit but hard to see how he could have saved it. it was so werid.

U guys are very ungrateful to the Suba
Probably why he retired along with Mandzo for the same reason
Except for the goal he allowed in the second minute of this game that slipped under his armpit
Ya if he makes that save on the pk in final
Who knows what that would have done for momentum
Suba, your lasting impression is the final where u played like dung dude.
Lookin like a 2014 Pletikosa.
On this day however, u were a legend.
This past World Cup probably inspired every single child in Croatia, and every child living somewhere different than Croatia that has Croatian descent to become a National hero and play for the National Team. In like 10 years we will probably have so many young prospects in our system.
Subašić was absolutely huge in that game. Looked like the best keeper in the world in that shootout.
That game was so stressful. Most nerve racking of all the games. I felt physically ill.
The man the changed the course of the we
