Russian club CSKA Moscow have locked up the services of 21 year-old Croatian attacking midfielder Nikola Vlašić until 2024, BBC reports. The deal is worth an estimated £14 million; moving Vlašić to Moscow permanently from Everton. Vlašić spent the entire 2018-19 season on loan at CSKA, where he scored eight goals in 31 games for the Russian club. He scored a memorable Champions League winner against Real Madrid in the group stage to earn CSKA three points in a 1-0 win.
Although this isn’t the sexiest move for fans – as the Russian Premier League doesn’t have the best exposure – it’s a solid move for Vlašić. He will have a starting XI spot at a decent European club with minimal pressure from fans. CSKA finished fourth in Russia last season and will play in the Europa League this year.
Vlašić is on the brink of breaking into Croatia’s senior starting XI – alongside Josip Brekalo – in the next two years. If he can perform in Russia and eventually move to a mid-size English or German side in the next 2-3 seasons, his future will be bright.
