Robert U. has confirmed that he will be reporting out of South Africa during the World Cup for CSR. CSR is looking for reports, video and interviews of the overall atmosphere of the first ‘Croatia-less’ World Cup since 1994. But what does Prva Generacija and other CSR readers want to know or see from South Africa in the coming weeks?
Just like CSR did for the Igor Štimac and Andrew Bogut interviews, send in your questions below in the ‘comments’ section so Robert can try to get them answered at the World Cup this year.
Robert will be blogging on Footiespot as well as CSR for the World Cup, so check it out.
Here is what Robert had to write in a recent email to CSR:
Great news, I would be delighted to join the CSR team during the World Cup!
Everything you have said sounds great and I would definitely be down for. I will certainly have my Croatian jerseys with me during the Cup and wearing them proudly at the matches that I’m going to other than the USA.
Just for your reference I am attending the following matches:
6/12 USA v. England, Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg
6/13 Ghana v. Serbia, Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
6/16 Uruguay v. South Africa, Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
6/17 Argentina v. South Korea, Soccer City, Johannesburg,
6/18 USA v. Slovenia, Ellis Park, Johannesburg
6/19 Cameroon v. Denmark, Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
6/20 Cote d’Iviore v. Brazil, Soccer City, Johannesburg
6/22 USA v. Algeria, Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria
6/25-6/26 USA Round of 16 Match (Hopefully!)
I arrive in Joburg on the morning of June 11th. I am definitely down for interviewing some people about what they have to say about a Croatia-less World Cup, especially since there will be loads of English fans down there. I do have tickets to the Serbia-Ghana match as well, so if you can think of something clever for me to do during the match I’d be happy to do it.
In terms of other pieces for CSR, I’m happy to do whatever pieces you would deem relevant. For the most part I’m going to be blogging about the US team as I travel and watch their matches and then on the general atmosphere. This will be my third trip to South Africa in the past 4 years so I have a pretty good understanding of what this World Cup means to the nation and have zero doubt that it will be one of the best World Cups ever; obviously it cannot be the greatest because Croatia will not be there! But I’d love to hear what you would have in mind for pieces for me to do. The first week of July I will be at the Fifa Football for Hope Festival and blogging regarding that for my internship.
I’m an International Affairs major graduating in August, so I’ve been fortunate enough to travel for the majority of my studies. I’ve done study abroad periods in South Africa three times, Benin, Italy, was a TA on a program in Zagreb and then worked for an organization that did work in India and spent some time over there. I’ve been fortunate to go to a bunch of games across the pond and in South Africa in my lifetime, but still haven’t completed my lifetime dream of seeing Croatia play in person. This will happen very shortly though, hopefully during the Euro 2012 qualifying round.
I’m very much looking forward to my involvement with CSR during the Cup and look forward to hearing back from you!
CroatianSoccerReport.com wishes you the best in your travels and can’t wait to see what kind of reaction you get as a Croatian representative at this year’s World Cup.
@Steve,
Thanks for the update… We will be organizing a trip to San Jose soon for the Spurs game. Some of you people on the esat coast should organize a Croatian "get-together".
@Ziva Istina,
I wish you all the best in SA. Be safe. Feel free to send us something if you find the time.
In unrelated news, Tottenham tickets at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ are now on sale.
It seems that they will play NY Red Bulls on Thursday July 22 at 8pm and then play Sporting Lisbon on Sunday July 25 as part of a double header that begins at 1pm.
I leave for S. Africa on Wednesday. Going to watch all three US games and some others sprinkled in between.
Robert…..good luck at the WC. If you are credentialed it will be tough to get any one-on-one interviews with the star players. Usually those go to the big media outlets or those who are the rights holders. Either way, good luck. I cant think of anything to ask croatian-related.
As we saw this weekend, there is the potential for trouble. I think everything will be OK in and around the stadiums and hotels. Trouble will take place as fans travel from one location to the other. S. Africa just does not have the infrastructure of Germany and Japan/S. Korea.
I really hope Mandzo joins Bordeaux. That would be such a good move for him. I think he'd actually be a hit there. French league is not too difficult if you can get on the right club. Obviously not like Klasnic, Leko and Runje were where your on a struggling team that used to be a big name but a genuine quality team like Bordeaux would be great. I think £6m should be fair for Mandzo. In the current climate nobody is paying out 10m Euro a player anymore.
It'll leave us with a messed up forward line, but i think if Mandzo is gonna be properly analysed for the national team he has to go unfortunately.
I'm glad Primorac has gone, but really not too sure about what else is left over at Dinamo with strikers. Kramaric will be better this season, but Slepicka and Dodo as a pairing fills me with dread.
I can't believe Slepicka is contracted till 2012. How the heck we supposed to pay that off. I think we can only sell by playing him and hoping he'll refind his best form enough to attract a offer. I don't mind Slepicka as a sub or player to come in now and then, but there is better players out there.
If we don't sign Leko and don't get strikers in like i mentioned such as Bjelanovic, Cesarec, Keric then i'm actually a bit worried that we won't even make the Europa Liga group stage next season. I think if we only bring in guys like Antolovic, Bunoza, Ademi they'll be good in a years time, but we prob won't do anything in Europe next season. I often say i look for improvement each season from Dinamo, but next season we may have to take a step back as i think we're ripping up the script and starting again. We've lost Butina, Kovac, Lovren, Vrdoljak already and Mandzo is next. Badelj, Tomecak, Morales are really important and must stay but we've kind lost the spine of our team. Hajduk have best chance next season to reclaim title. There is a lot more options for Hajduk. I think there still missing a number 9.
Subasic, Buljat, Pandza/ Vejic, Maloca, Jozinovic; Oremus/Tomasov, Ljubicic, Andric, Anas Sharbini; Ticinovic and a new striker
Subs: Cop, Vukusic, Jonjic, Cernat, K Ljubicic, Stipic
^That looks a more organised side than ours.
I like what Osijek are doing. Smoje and Pelaic are two very solid signings for the defence. If they can get in Golubovic up front they could have a really good season. Not much happening in other clubs at moment.
Would be nice to see Stjepan Tomas in Rijeka. I think he could impress there.

@ RobertU
That's very cool that you're doing this. It looks like you are set-up for an amazing experience!
Perhaps you could interview the Croatian players on the other teams for example Australia and New Zealand?
Are there any ethnic Croats on the Serb/Slovenian/Slovak teams? How about South American teams like Chile or one of the 'Guay's?
If you get the chance ask Maradona about his purported Croatian lineage?
@ Cozeto,
Who the hell are you?
PS…. The "Crottenham" T-Shirts are G-A-Y!
is Luka Modric or Slaven Bilic gonna make a surprise appearance there? i dont think so.. So, who the hell are you gonna interview?
Just be safe over there. Make sure that those people should thank their lucky stars that they don't have to play against Croatia. And represent us with honor and pride
oh, and some pictures of them fine ass brasileiras. mmm… brazilian poon.
