Tom Dubravec:CROPIX/Split celebrates under a Red Sky
In a scene out of Independence Day, Split partied under a red sky Saturday night as hundreds of flares were lit to commemorate the 100th birthday of Hajduk Split. One of the most peaceful, yet chaotic celebrations in recent time took place throughout the entire city as nearly every citizen was on the same page for this epic event. Hajduk is more to the city of Split than just a football club- it is an institution. For Splićani to utilize their night sky as a canvass to show the world what goes on inside of Poljud on gameday is special. Torcida should be proud.
(For all you Dinamovci on CSR, your time will come. Let Hajduk and their fans have their moment.)

DUBROVNIK CELEBRATING HEAVILY! HOW SHOULD SPLIĆANI FEEL ABOUT THIS?
Founding members of Hajduk, in the U Fleků Inn in Prague
The story of Hajduk (video below). Young men from Split saw a football match in Prague and wanted to form their own team back home. They had players but did not have a name for the new team. The young men barged into their professor’s office uninvited to ask his opinion on what the team should be called. The professor said that the boys entered his office like a bunch of outlaws (Hajduci), coming in without notice and entering noisily. The name stuck and 100 years later, Split still has their Hajduk.

This is for ante! Hajduk plays in Dubrovnik yesterday in front of 2k and gets first win of 2011
@Tom,
I agree. The future doesnt look bright for Hajduk. Ziva Istina's strategy looks good.
@anonymous,
"Most of sibenik doesn't hate Hajduk."
Where are you writing us from? and how much do you know about Sibenik?
"There has been altercation between torcida and sibenik fans though. "
Why do you think this would happen if "most of Sibenik doesn't hate hajduk."
out of all of Dalmacija, Sibenik is the most for Dinamo and the least for Hajduk. This is from what I've heard.
When I don't have all the facts, I either ask questions or Google it. Simple as that. No one from Split bitched at Dubrovnik for celebrating…that answers my question.
I was under the impression that the city organized the flares on the wall. It was Torcida…
We all learned a little more from each other on this one…
Watch out for that Nicole Hazdovac….she's a little rascal…or maybe a seahorse 🙂
@ Ante Kvartuc,
Get ur shit right man. Most of sibenik doesn't hate Hajduk. Most of Sibenik loves Hajduk, remember Sibeniks club is pretty new and before they were around mostly everyone in sibenik were Hajduk fans. Yea there's some fans for Sibenik, but Hajduk still outnumbers them. There has been altercation between torcida and sibenik fans though. I pretty much agree with Nicole, u either cheer for Dinamo or Hajduk.
Hajduk zivi vjecno, "nuff said"

"only the few in Torcida DBK have a right to celebrate."
Are you the celebration police? Who gave you the right to tell other people if they are allowed to celebrate or not? Your calculations are crap.

WELL SAID AND 'NUFF SAID!
@Anonymous #2:
Who are you, Ante's mom? He's a big boy, I think he can defend himself and navigate through a discussion.
I understand he didn't quite get it, that was obvious. But there was definitely some faulty reasoning even after he realized Torcida Dubrovnik organized the celebration (which was a given and obvious to everyone else)…
@Ante..to say it was for promotion doesn't make sense. You are looking waaay too into it. It was a celebration and a great coordination by Torcida Dubrovnik.
"Simple as that."
Nice work Nicole, way to set the Clip joint straight!!! 🙂
It's also good to see Ante B pulling out the legalese… he's only left with 7% power now… 🙂
Tom, to me this celebration was nothing about the current state of the club. Celebration of Hajduk and what it means to Damlmacija and its fans. I was able to seperate the two.
No different than what dinamo means to Zagreb and its fans when its time for their century celebration.
Expect nothing to change with the club. As long as presidents come and go, it will remain the same. There is no leadership peice in place to guide and run the club.
What I would do????? I would concede the title to Dinamo and play all the kids. Play the kids and learn if they can perform at this level. I would go into the spring and tell players like Andrijasevic, Trebotic, Ticinovic and Tomasov that you will all receive about 75% of the playing time. You will get your opportunity and we want to see what you can do. If we lose 3-0 or lose a few back-to-back game, you will still play. I would communicate this message to the fans and Torcida so they know what to expect in the coming 5 months.
I would get rid of the dead weight in the juniors program and remove all the "tatini sinovi" from the program.
Of course none of this will happen because hajduk has no long-term strategic plan.
A week hajduk also means a week dinamo. Until hajduk is able to rise to the occasion, dinamo will run this league unchallenaged and then shit themselves again when they reach europe because they are unprepared and don't get any tough matches in Croatia.
A fantastic celebration, and great coverage guys.
My only question is, what kind of immediate future does Hajduk have? Ibro's gone. Strinic is gone. An interim head coach.
I hate to rain on the parade but I just can't get excited about the state of the club today.
@ All,
Are we arguing again?
Leave Ante alone: He didn’t understand something and he’s asking a question. Many people don’t understand, especially those born outside of Croatia. The difference is that they are afraid to ask; they think they know.
For the last hundred years, Hajduk has been the symbol for Dalmacija, for the south, and for being Croatian. It has been and it is the venue for expressing people’s frustrations with rules, lows and governments. Hajduk will never be only a soccer team. For so many people, Hajduk doesn’t have much to do with soccer: it is part of identity.
That being said, we all need to celebrate Hajduk’s 50-th birthday. We are celebrating a few people’s brilliant idea. We are celebrating Croatia’s history.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HAJDUK!
Hajdukovka zauvik
please excuse Ante K, his Clippers are going to miss the playoffs again this year and he's taking it out on others. 🙂
@ Ante K
"only the few in Torcida DBK have a right to celebrate."
Are you the celebration police? Who gave you the right to tell other people if they are allowed to celebrate or not? Your calculations are crap.
If Michael Scott can do it, we can do it.
@ Ante B,
You CANNOT "That's what she said" your own saying. It's like laughing at your own joke. No go.
@ Nicole,
1. Not stirring anything up, getting questions answered.
2. I was under the impression that the city of Dubrovnik organized this. Torcida DBK did. Nonetheless, the city still allowed it even though they didn't finance it. Why? Promotion.
3. DBK has a population of 40,000+. There were no more than 300 people on the Stradun nor on the walls for the fire show. My calculations show that less than 1% of the population of Dubrovnik attended the festivities.
Judgement: Dubrovnik is not a Hajduk town. Until new information comes to my attention, only the few in Torcida DBK have a right to celebrate.
I disagree; in the Statute of That's What She Said, it's permissible at any time, by any person, including the orator, should they deem fit. Otherwise, my entire routine would be cut by 93.4%.
Come on now Ante, you can't "that's what she said" your own comment
Nicole?? Wow! I'm impressed! Keep it up! (that's what she said)
Haha…I just read your comment after I posted my last.
Did you think the city of Dubrovnik organized this the whole time????? helllooooo
I thought it was obvious that it was Torcida Dubrovnik and that you didnt understand that.
So now all of a sudden its ok with you and "beautiful"…ahaha oh Ante, I just dont get you sometimes 😉
@Ante
You just love to stir things up, so for your sake, I'll write a response 🙂 hehe
I understand you were asking these questions without a lot of prior knowledge, so I could see why maybe it wouldn't make sense to you.
True, in the old town of Dubrovnik you probably won't see "Hajduk" or "Torcida" plastered on walls like it is in Split. The culture and nature of the old town of Dubrovnik is much different than Split (and much smaller). They do take great pride in Sveti Vlaho as their patron saint and this is the most visible symbol of the city historically. Also, there is almost no graffiti in the old town of Dubrovnik, so really this isn't a reason to say they are not fans or there is no presence of "Torcida." Though you may not see anything in the old town, if you ever ventured outside of the walls you would see that there are Hajduk signs and graffiti. For example, you would see Torcida support all over Konavle and Mokosica.
Also you said: "It's weird to me as a sports fan because the team is Hajduk SPLIT and not Hajduk Dubrovnik." No one said it is "Hajduk Dubrovnik", they are just simply celebrating a team they love. I think, as I'm sure others do, that it was an amazing spectacle to show their team pride.
Comparing the ex-Supersonics example to this just doesn't make sense. There are Hajduk and Dinamo fans all over Croatia.
"you will see that there are only a few hundred Torcida Dubrovnik members there"
How many people live in Dubrovnik? About 50,000…compared to Split's about 400,000. So to compare the thousands of fans in Split, to the ones in Dubrovnik also doesn't make sense. Yes, there are more people for Sveti Vlaho, but this is the main event for Dubrovnik and this year was its' 1,039th year. Comparing a soccer team from Split celebrating its' 100th anniversary and a religious and historical event in its 1,039th year also makes no sense.
Yes, Dubrovcani do associate with that title more so than the "Dalmatinac" title because of its' history. But again, why does this have to do with the fact that they are fans of Hajduk?
As far as the comment about glorifying the city, I do not agree with this and I do not think people in Croatia would agree with this either. If anything, Hajduk fans in Split are proud to show how strong they are.Bottomline. When it comes down to it, it's a competition between Hajduk and Dinamo. Everyone is either Hajduk or Dinamo in Croatia. If Hajduk can show they have all these fans everywhere and people are celebrating, that is what it is all about, is it not?
@ Nate,
We were just in Seattle. We tried contacting you but no luck.
I've been on the horn with Croatia regarding this matter, and I have answers!
It was Torcida Dubrovnik that organized the flares around the wall. The city had nothing to do with it. Dubrovnik is split in half regarding Hajduk. There are many groups of Torcida and many groups of BBB. To call Dubrovnik Hajduk is wrong.
However, it was Torcida Dubrovnik who created the beautiful show atop the walled city. Major props to them for doing so. It all makes more sense now. Hopefully that helps.
Ante- I love the ex-Sonics reference. Being from Seattle I didn't choose a new team, the NBA is dead to me.
My family is from Dubrovnik so this was particularly confusing to me. I have walked all over that city and never saw any Torcida/Hajduk signs up. I asked to see if anyone knows of some connection linking the two. I think it's fantastic that Dubrovnik celebrated along with Split, just wanted to know why.
@ Nate,
They obviously used the best footage they could from the Dinamo/Hajduk derbies, but when Torcida is in full force, they do look like that…there's a lot of extra-curricular activities as well that go on both sides of 90 minutes. I'm trying to figure out the Dubrovnik question as we speak…
@ Nicole,
I posted that question for feedback because I myself had some inquiries about Dubrovnik celebrating…
I have been to both cities multiple times. In Split, you see nothing but Hajduk Split and Torcida graffiti throughout the city: walls, city lights, buildings. In Dubrovnik everything is Libertas. Please correct me if I am wrong with any of this.
It's weird to me as a sports fan because the team is Hajduk SPLIT and not Hajduk Dubrovnik. (Should ex-Seattle Supersonic fans celebrate a Lakers championship just because they don't have an NBA team anymore due to being a bit removed by being cut off way north? NO)
If you take a look at the first picture in the post under the Dubrovnik section, you will see that there are only a few hundred Torcida Dubrovnik members there. The rest of the Stradun behind them is empty. To me that means a few supporters are behind them, not the entire city. Sveti Vlaho gets the Stradun more packed than Hajduk's 100th…
When I saw the walls being lit up for the first time in a video, I was very confused. I just asked myself WHY?
If you ask 95% of people from Dubrovnik who they are…they say Dubrovcani, not Dalmatinci. What do they sing in pregame when "Dalmatinca Sam…" is playing at the Poljud then? They give you a whole spiel about how they have their own crown on the Croatian flag. And I won't go into geography or politics further, because I like Dubrovnik and am glad it is part of Croatia. I would miss it if it were gone.
Taking Sibenik out of the equation because most hate Hajduk and like Dinamo due to their close proximity to Split, why didn't Zadar throw their own show? Not their city. Everyone from Zadar is for Hajduk even though they have their own Prva Liga club, right now.
Simple as that.
So why did Dubrovnik do it? To glorify their beautifully walled city that much more. They milked this and they milked it well. So that is why CSR asks, "How should Splicani feel about this?"
Do they not care? Do they think Dubrovnik is trying to steal their thunder? I don't know. But that is why we ask.
Can't wait to hear thoughts on this. Where are my Splicani????
"DUBROVNIK CELEBRATING HEAVILY! HOW SHOULD SPLIĆANI FEEL ABOUT THIS?"
What is this supposed to mean??!! Just because Dubrovnik is a bit removed and cut off by being all the way down south, does not mean they are not fans of Hajduk. Hajduk has always had a huge following in Dubrovnik…come on, guys, get with it!!
If anything, people should be commenting on how amazing it looked from above and that it was to commemorate 100 years of Hajduk!
Great post! Congrats to Hajduk.
This leaves me with two questions. Are Torcida always as crazy as they look in the Football Factory video? And why was Dubrovnik so excited?
2-0!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much love to Hajduk and Torcida. What an amazing display.
I'm a dinamovac but at the end of the day we are all croatian and we have to stick together. I'm tired of the divisions between the north and the south, hercegovci and etc. I'm tired of this shit. Tired tired tired of this shit!
