It was looking great for Dinamo Zagreb early on in the second leg of their Champions League playoff round tie Tuesday night at Maksimir vs. Young Boys. Dinamo’s Izet Hajrovic struck home in the 7th minute of play to make it 2-1 (on aggregate) for Dinamo. If that result would have held up, the Croatian champions would be on their way to the “promised land”: the Champions League group stage.
But it all unraveled quickly in the 2nd half as a “generous” penalty kick call was given to Young Boys when Marin Leovac got locked up ‘side-to-side’ with a Young Boys attacker and the penalty was given in the 64th minute. Guillaume Hoarau would convert to make it 2-2 on aggregate and then he would score again two minutes later off a corner to suck all the air out of a thumping Stadion Maksimir.
Dinamo was quiet in attack the remaining 25 minutes of the match as Young Boys go through to the Champions League 3-2 on aggregate. It was close but no cigar for Zagreb who will now see themselves play in the Europa League group stage. The draw takes place August 31st.
Europa League is a more fitting competition for Dinamo as they have had zero success in Champions League the past decade; when they have qualified. A Croatian side has not played in any European competition past the New Year this century. Can Dinamo break the curse?
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
@BZ – I don’t disagree with anything you said. My question is this – do you not think we’ve (society at least in North America and Western/Central Europe) have gone too far down that rabbit hole to reverse things where there isn’t someone forcing you to wear these nonsensical armbands and getting pissed off if you don’t?
The only retort I can find (at least in today’s world with how most companies are established) is that if one of those armaband policies of having to show support for whichever arguably marginalized groups one could say it goes against their beliefs/charter of rights/freedoms/whatever they have in Europe/Germany?
I feel like we’re being forced into this position where if you disagree you are now homophobic/racist/bad person.
When too many people are quiet and don’t stand up and voice their opinion we end up in situations like this. I too would personally not want to wear the armband but then the backlash and worry is that you’re labeled a homophobe and bad person when really it just goes against my beliefs, I don’t care if people are gay but I’m not going to celebrate and promote it either.
I agree it’s a non story but this is the world we’re in. If you guys want me to drop the topic I will, no harm taken.

ZVEZDA IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE!!! ZVEZDA BEST CLUB IN THE BALKANS
Crvena Zvezda has made the Champions League they will most likely score 0 or 1 goal and will be defeated 6:0 or 7:0.
Brekalo is young and inexperienced, he said what he thought and felt…this really isn’t newsworthy!
@ BZ
Valid points.
It’s a captains arm band!
Is Brekalo captain?
Then keep it moving.
We have the most boneheaded PR of any top footballing nation.
LGBT is a lucrative market for these clubs.
It’s like our 16 – 24 year olds get ZERO guidance.
Kid is 20 years old and now looks like an intolerant hick.
And then we all look like bone heads.
Cp85- See how it works? The libtards will force you into idiotic scenarios to root you out, & identify you as the enemy. Poor Brekalo, fucking raw deal. This topic should never have arisen, he was just trying to play soccer.
It is abundantly clear that there is no good reason for a soccer team to wear a rainbow armband. In Germany, Croatia, the USA, and most civilized nations you are free to be gay, nobody is stopping you. In fact, many straight people put gays on a pedestal and idolize them. Maybe in a country where gays are thrown off buildings, an armband may be necessary, but not in Germany.
I can think of a billion other causes I would wear an armband to support before I wore a rainbow armband…various childrens cancers, any type of auto-immune disease except hiv, mental midget disease et al.
That said, I have no problem with gays, just hate the way the loud ones make their sexual preference seem like the most pressing issue in modern society.
Rafael has a point.
On one end – he shouldn’t have to wear the arm band if it goes against his beliefs. On the other if it’s part of your terms of employment, it becomes tricky.
Then you can flip the switch again and argue – I thought there weren’t supposed to be any political/religious (I could be wrong) messages? Subasic was warned for wearing a t shirt of a friend who passed away ? That’s a joke. Unfortunately that’s the climate of the world we live in.
You would never see a team in the Turkish league or any predominantly Muslim country be forced to wear a cross on their armband for all the Assyrian children being massacred in Iraq by Isis. It would jeopardize all that oil money sponsorship (Qatari airways etc). In fact, Real Madrid I believe it was last year removed the cross from their logo to be more “inclusive”.
It’s hypocrisy at it’s finest. I think a billion signatures would still do nothing. Money talks fellas but we already knew that.
On a different note. Our Borna Coric is through at the U.S. Open to the last 32. Playing good tennis. Our new star in tennis perhaps.
Rafael your soooooo silly
@Silly-I don’t agree with what Brekalo did but he has the right to not wear the armband. It is his right. He isn’t switching the rainbow armband for a swastika.
I am all for equality and happiness for all people. But its brutal when you are not allowed to be free in your regards to your own beliefs.
Why don’t we force players to wear turbans or burkhas for one game to promote racial equality? And if the players choose to not wear them they are racist? Come On. Why don’t we force muslim HNL players to wear catholic arm bands for one game to promote the catholic faith in Croatia. And if they choose not to wear it they hate Catholics? Come on.
I agree! Lifetime ban for brekalo!. These actions have no place on the nt!
Its a shame we will miss out on Dinamo Zagreb not scoring a goal in the Champions league and getting beaten 4:0 or 5:0.
^^lol
Hey Ante
I think it’s time we turn this site into a cause for good
I would conduct two polls with two questions
1) should brekalo be given a lifetime ban or suspended until he from the national team until he wears the rainbow arm band
2) should the captain of Croatia for all age groups have to wear a rainbow arm band like they do at Wolfsburg
After that, we can start getting signatures for a petition to get the ball rolling
^ ^
I agree. I’d rather see then in Europa.
Leovac got too tight on a player who was faster, stronger, and more technically gifted; stupid foul. Guy was in the corner, just block the near post pass and make sure he doesn’t dribble by you. Gotta be smarter in the penalty box.
Probably better Dinamo doesn’t get blown out on a weekly basis in Champs League.
It should’ve been enough. Against a superior team too.
Could Dinamo with their world class imports score more than 1 goal at home? No
1 goal was all Dinamo could score at home.
Could Dinamo beat Young Boys with a ref who doesn’t call a BS 2nd half penalty against the home team? Yes.
Young boys had 7 Swiss (homegrown) players in the starting line-up.
Dinamo had 3 (homegrown) players in the starting line-up.
Could Dinamo beat Young boys with more Croatian players in their team? No
Could Dinamo beat Young boys with their world class quality imports? Lol, No
Is the HNL along with Dinamo a joke? Yes
Nothing we can do about it. We are a small country. Just like in World Cup a bs penalty against us.
Love the headline Dinamo crumble!!
If you call being in control young boys doing nothing and then a bullshit penalty! Crumbling. Even the Second goal shouldn’t have Counted frickin guy hand balled before the counter
At least Livaja’s legs will be fresh for our upcoming games! His red card was a “Look at me” moment. Will prob be suspended a few games. Undeserved bc the guy went down faster than a Wolfsburg fan.
FIFA/UEFA love Switzerland.
Now you know why we need to come together as Croatians round the world.
Dude runs into player .. hooks him to the ground ..
Ref calls penalty on Dinamo in ZAGREB!!
You think this happens in any home game in Europe?
Speaking of power .. man Dinamo needed just one counter after 1-0 and this would have been done.
Not sure how a ref can call these 50/50 plays penalties?
Two BS penalties this summer.
SWISS team ??
Bog i Hrvati
Peter, the path may be easier than before, but we are still talking about a team that is small and not experienced in doing well in Europe for the past several decades. I understand it should be easier…today I felt our guys blew it although I also feel the ref gave a very stupid penalty! Regardless, they are out and this is over!
At least they’ll still be playing in Europe! As a Hajduk fan I’m always happy to see Croatian teams playing in European competitions especially since Hajduk does so poorly. All of Croatia is relying on Dinamo now to get us that second spot in Europe and it’s sad Dinamo didn’t do better but in all honesty they would be way out of their league in the Champions League, the Europa League is a much more appropriate level for them and here’s to hoping they can make it out of the group stage! I was rooting for them to make it to the CL but even then the most they could do was finish third and get to the EL anyway.
Disappointing for Dinamo …they really should have made Champions league. They let it slip out of their grasp
@Slavonac, Really, it isn’t as hard of a path to qualify for the Champs League as it used to be.
There were previous occasions when Dinamo had reached this final qualifying stage that they would be drawn against the likes of an Arsenal, Werder Bremen, etc.
In the last few years, UEFA has set the format up for clubs from lesser domestic leagues to qualify.
Dinamo plays in an inferior league and the route to qualify for this tournament certainly isn’t daunting as evidence by their draw this year in this final round and in the previous rounds.
It’s really a tournament they should be qualifying for.
Europa League it is at the end of the day. They should be a competitive outfit in that group stage.
Europa league it is
1-0 DINAMO

Any streaming links to the game?
Most likely will be a 3:3 Draw sounds fishy. Its a shame we wont see Hajduk Split lose 5:0 6:0 in Europe.
Real shame Rijeka couldn’t make it this time around. They have a decent squad but have sold some decent players in recent years. But at least Osijek is getting talked about now plus Lokomotiva is still putting the usual pressure on the top HNL squads. The other Zagreb club Gorica seems to be making some noise and have a lot of foreign players too.
Would be really good to see Majer and Moro get some Champions League experience. Ajmo Orsic!!!
We need Rijeka, Hajduk and Osijek to get into Europe…we have good players and teams that aren’t soo far off of Europe quality.
@Slavonac
Great comment. Major accomplishment to make it and a great payday for the organization. I think they will go through.
Enjoy the game.
Look folks, I really don’t wanna read the same negative twist every time we talk about Dinamo on the verge of or actually qualifying. I honestly believe that some here don’t realize the difficult path it is to get into this tournament. It’s really stupid to start pointing out how many goals were scored and how many games lost…you have no clue how much of an achievement and accomplishment it is to actually get there…which is why teams make good money just to be part of it!
I recall some anti Mamic people, some BBB fanboys and the tag alongs that don’t have a clue about how beautiful this game is but also, how challenging it is to compete at that level! All you need to do is compare team salaries and look at the rosters to count how many local players represent their team. It’s a ridiculous conversation to have about “I’d rather we lose with homegrown than advance with imports “!!! That talk demonstrates the lack of knowledge within the sport itself!
I hope we stop the negative columns…if you support any Croatian team, great…if you only support a certain team then maybe learn about the sport before you spout your jealous comments!
