Dinamo Zagreb played to an evenly-matched 1-1 draw against Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg Wednesday night. With Red Bull scoring first only seconds before the halftime whistle, Dinamo had to muster an all important away goal before returning to Zagreb.
In the 63′, Mario Mandžukić capitalized on a Red Bull defensive error to make the game 1-1. Dinamo put a long ball into the attacking third in which a Salzburg defender tried to chest the ball back to his goalkeeper. There wasn’t enough pace on his chest volley and Mandža quickly swooped in to chip the goalkeeper.
The game as a whole was pretty aggressive. There were multiple scoring opportunities for both sides as shots and crosses were being driven in from all over the field. Tomislav Butina and his counterpart did a fine job to keep the game at 1-1.
The game got a bit out of control in injury time when Mandžukić was being harassed by a Red Bull player while retrieving the ball. Even though the Salzburg player was completely at fault for the incident, Mandžukić completely took a sissy flop as he hit the ground. As he was waiting on the byline to re-enter the game after medical attention, the referee handed Mandžukić his second yellow of the match. He will not play in the second leg.
The match was called immediately after as a linesman was hit in the head with a bottle that was deflected off of Mandža’s head. I guess he at least deserves an assist for that.
In other Champions League news on the day, Darijo Srna and Shakhtar Donetsk barely came out with a 2-2 draw at home against FC Timisoara. Fernandinho saved them in the 86′.
@Tome,
Manzdo had a yellow in hand already, the second yellow might have been for simulation..
so the yellow/red for manzdo was for the bottle or the other thing?
sorry, i commented in the wrong article haha
what did torcida do in the beginning??? the slovak police didnt let them into their games with their legit tickets and the cops got what they deserved, a little bit of dalmatinski attitude… the cops obviously didnt want any trouble happening in the stadium (but what would have happened anyway, a couple of flares and a huge uefa fine) but they got fucked over and got trouble outside the stadium… WTF
Thanks for the link Zach, I just posted a little summary on all the action from today..
Pranjic missed a PK
Slaven lost
Torcida killed it
Rijeka lost
Not a great day for Croatia
Here are the highlights:

Zilina played better but not way better, both teams looked pretty bad.
RE: Hajduk vs Zilina
I've searched countless websites for highlights of the game and yet all I can find is footage of the police arresting Hajduk fans.
Very frustrating.
nevermind
holy crap!

there is going to be hell to pay in Split. It wouldn't surprise me if uefa had the game in Split played behind closed doors to prevent any further violence, God knows Torcida will be looking for it.
Tom…elaborate please, what exactly happened?
RE: Hajduk v Zilina
I didn't see the game, nor have I seen the highlights but I did see a clip of the "action" outside of the stadium… fuckin' fascist Slovakian police!
Is anas Sharbini injured?
that bottle throwing incident was so funny – they can't fine them for that. Come on – it was only a small incident. I thought it was hilarious how Mandza flopped on the floor holding his face when the Red Bull guy never touched him and then when he was actually hit by something – the bottle just bounced of Mandza's head and he didn't even notice. I think its cos it hit the part of his head which is hollow i.e where his brain should be. At least Mandza has a comedy moment to show his kids and grandchildren when he retires. Its really no big deal.
Regards Barbaric we were so close to releasing him. Mamic takes so much stick but if he kicked Barbaric as when he should have done he'd have made the right choice. He's no prospect. We need a centre back. I know they are old, but we are basically talking about someone to cover and Tomas or Simic would be better than this moron Barbaric. At least they can teach the younger guys how to defend. Meantime we need to keep our eye out for the next quality centre back in HNL.
Hajduk and Dinamo goals basically the same.
wow
2 goals for tromso in 3 minutes
I thought the other team was slightly better, not by much….The game is bad so far…no flow to it.
Hajduk outplayed in 1st half. They looked horrible.
Goooooooooooooooooooool Slaven!!!
@ Peter….BBB have a history of causing trouble. As far as I know the Red Bull fans do not. They will be fined and that is it.
If this would have taken place in ZG, would the fine and penalty be much steaper for Dinamo. The answer is yes and deservedly so. Until all our fans can behave like normal human beings instead of animals this will always be the case.
Dinamo played well, deserved a draw at the very least. Both teams had numerous chances, but lacked a player with a nose for the goal. Dinamo's passing game was on point, while Red Bull threatened Dinamo with numerous countterattack opportunities in the second half.
I didn't get why the referee and linesman didn't move at the end of the game as they were getting bombed by trash and later the bottle.
Dinamo returned from Austria with the result they wanted and qualification is in their hands.. I also said 1-1. Luck was on my side.
@Peter,
I think UEFA will just fine Red Bull since they dont have a history of trouble.
Actually, I am quite curious to see how that bottle throwing incident will be handled by Uefa. We all know, if the shoe was on the other foot, if that had occurred in Croatia, Dinamo would be thrown out of Europe for this campaign.
@ DinamoFan – I am willing to be very patient with Barbaric, only because the national team is in such desperate need for a young CB. With regards to Mandzukic. I will say this to any Croatian player, play like Olic and Srna, leave everything on the field. While it pains me to say, even Srna can be accused of the odd moments of serious play acting which only hurt his reputation. Leave all the childish antics to the Italians, Portuguese and Argentinians.
The BBB should have been there to choke the bottle throwing bastard.
I have to agree with you Radman. Was a bit embarrassed watching Mandza do two stupid moments to get himself red carded. Was annoying as he put in a good shift until that point. Jurcic was going crazy at him too. I think that deserves a club fine. Did you notice Barbaric running in as well. I can't stand Barbaric. We need to get rid of this player. I'd argue with anyone about the qualities of the rest of the squad and back all those other players including Carlos who does his best, but Barbaric should go.
I've noticed significant improvements in Dinamo this year than in last year. Papa whilst not being top class is better than Balaban and Tadic. The ball actually sticks when it goes to him. Sammir needs speaking to by someone. Maybe we need a trainer just to deal with him cos he has no idea how to channel his ability to realise his potential. He's got great technique, but he does it all in the wrong areas.
I think Badelj is like the new Modric. He has some great skill and passing, but he's not dominant in the midfield. I believe in this idea to keep going with him though and letting him learn. He's part of a group of current Dinamo players who could really be quality internationals, but have a bit more work to do on their game including Glavina, Lovren and Kramaric. I think we have three players who can be counted on to perform in every game – Mandzo, Etto and Morales all played well last night. I was surprised by Biscan's performance. To my mind if he plays like that this season thats better than all the defenders Bilic is talking about like Drpic, Knezevic, Vejic and Lovren. Biscan and keeper were decent last night. Perhaps playing alongside Robert Kovac has rubbed off on Biscan and the guys actually learned how to defend.
I just don't want us to be in Champions League though. To my mind we are not under pressure in the second leg. We are playing on decent, but far from quality opponent and if we lost it wouldn't be the end of the world. I think Kramaric should be allowed to play in place of Mandza to test out his qualities. I'm sure Dinamo fans will respect the coach if he did it rather than playing Sivonjic or Slepicka. If we're in the business of creating Croatia internationals this is the type of game Kramaric has to play.
@ Anonymous,
Thank you for the kind words, whoever you are. We're glad you're enjoying the site.
Just know that as the site grows so will the spam, trash and ignorant threats that these 'dickheads' come up with. Denis and I will do our best to delete them right away.
Don't even bother responding to them as they will be gone as soon as our next login.
To all 'Prva Generacija' members as well as newcomers, I thank you in advance for all the thought and energy you will put into your post this upcoming season.
Alright mr. "Tomislav de la ghetto" (and don't make stupid allusions to good television shows), I'm having a bad day and I figured I'd turn it around by checking how Dinamo did by going to the one and only http://www.croatiansoccerreport.com, which is a wonderful web page. Every once in a while some tool like yourself will make a ridiculously stupid comment. Usually it's mildly annoying and easily brushed aside and ignored but your comment was perhaps beyond stupid. I feel great sorrow that I had to read such garbage. It would've almost been funny but then I read the "Dobru dosle, Za dem spramni." Seriously? Really? You must know a bit of Croatian to pull out a 'witty' comment like that. Never mock any nation's or people's culture, language, or national football team for that matter.
To close my poorly organized and insomnia induced rant, I would like to say that a 12 year old such as yourself (you must be no older than 12 to find amusement in such a post) should perhaps read over his or her comments before posting them as to not offend. Take care, and I sincerely hope you get a life very, very soon.
Mamic proved once again that he is a joke. Mandzukic is also a disgrace. I support him, but, if he ever does that stupid garbage for the national team, we should never call him back. If I wanted to watch men behave like children I would watch the Portuguese play football. Dinamo as a team played well, very lively in the first 15 mins.
@Nikolina Stanfel
What the f***???
'i guess he at least deserves a assist for that'
Comical stuff. Fun report Ante. Hey how did you know the game would be 1-1 with Mandza scoring. Can i get a lend of your time-machine that visits the future once you've finished with it.
Apparently Srna assisted on Shaktars goal. Regards second leg i think with Mandza out Jurcic should make it Kramaric time!
