February 14 is more than just Valentine’s day for many fans of Dinamo Zagreb. It is also a day of victory. A day marked in history when their club was symbolically given back to them after a decade of struggle between the stands and the front office of the club. It is the day when NK Dinamo Zagreb returned.
Today marks the 13th anniversary of when love and support for the club prevailed over politics, and the club’s proper name was restored.
Dinamo Zagreb has gone through many identity changes in it’s disputed 102 year history. Though the name “Dinamo” did not appear until 1945, the club can trace its roots to Građasnki Zagreb, which was a team from 1911 until it was disbanded by communist leaders in 1945.
After the breakup of Jugoslavia, the team was pressured to cut ties with its communist past. In 1992, Dinamo was known as HAŠK Građanski, named after two of the clubs that were disbanded in 1945 and replaced with Dinamo. This was an odd choice in names, as HAŠK and Građanski were rivals in Zagreb.
This name lasted only a year before another, more historical change took place. Dinamo president Zlatko Canjuga was Croatian President Franjo Tuđman’s friend and colleague, and heeded his suggestions to rename HAŠK Građanski to Croatia Zagreb.
Many thought this move was purely political, but Canjuga assured that the name would remain.
During the Croatia Zagreb era, fans were prohibited to show anything depicting the Dinamo name or logo. Violators of the rule would have to answer to police authorities. Even during away matches, police kept an eye out for those who bore the club’s former name.
Tuđman died late in 1999, and after much pressure, Croatia Zagreb finally gave in to fan’s wishes and restored the Holy name Dinamo to the team on Valentine’s Day in 2000.
NK Dinamo remained untouched until 2011, when the prefix “G” for Građanski was added to the name to honor the team’s heritage. Now GNK Dinamo Zagreb, the club celebrates Valentine’s Day in remembrance of this victory for the fans.

SB and CNN 4 LIFE BABY
Ironic the guy posting the SB article gets his news from Fox.
Both reliable. Yeah sure.
Cico, see you at the fundraiser.
O Ziva you r so funny , NOT ! Pizdo
I just flipped on the public access channel and they are airing a fundraiser for my jadan hajduk.
U cant touch slobodna dalmacija with a ten foot pole.
Two Ziva, whats wrong with poljudska ljepotica. You dont like the pregame scramble of finding newspapers to cover those dirty ass seats haha. The cevapi stand outside is legit. PS is it still nonalcoholic beer in the stadium?
@Anonymous
That was actually pretty funny!
Thanks for giving me some ammo for when i make fun of my Dalmatian friends.
Poglavnik – supak ti je red star fish
@Anonymous
The red star says it all!
I don’t even like Heineken because of that damn red star!
@Ante B
I gotcha now! Good point!
@ Ante B , i guess no commies liked dinamo . R you a tard or what ?
Evertbody loves Hajduk . Even some bad people . That is not the clubs fault . Come on , give it up .
Really? Are you just writing? What does the N in JNA stand for? If all of the people in SFRJ liked them, what does that mean? Pa jebote koliko sabana imamo ovdje. Alright folks, it’s quitting time for the week. Idem doma. See you all next week
It doesn’t say anywhere in that article that Hajduk was “Titos” club…. It says narodni not Titos and narodni can mean alot of things just depends how u want to look at it.
That’s in retrospect because we had revenge on Turkey and destroyed them at their house
@Ante B.
Did you mean that ’98 was the worst until Turkey in ’08? Or do you all of the sudden rank ’98 over ’08? Kinda weird that would change for you…
We can find books and articles on Kramer destroying Reic. But I refuse to only believe Kramer because there is more than one perspective on everything. The truth is in the middle of what Kramer, Reic, etc. write.
It’s on Gol.hr. I have the mobile address. It might not work if on your laptop but google the title
http://m.dnevnik.hr/bin/mobile/index.php?article_id=165171&comments_page=1
Show me. Show how he exposed it show how all that yugo stuff about Hajduk is true. Prove it buddy. Show me where and when Reic said that and no forum crap either I want legit proof!
That article is not dead on…….
Ante B. exposed it for the crap it is.
That article on SD is dead on! Show me an article that shows otherwise. All that said about Hajduk from the former country is just hate gossip from rivalry teams, cities and their fans. Show me facts.
Ante: Yes i remember the header over the line.. that sucked.. i think that’s why it hurts more.. we actually should have won on merit. I was basically in tears that day :_(
lol @ that article from SD…
that’s like me coming on here and saying “hey guys, check out this article on Novi List and all the great things they’re saying about Rijeka!”
in terms of nicer, modern stadiums in Croatia now I’d go with Dugopolje, Aldo Drosina and I always liked Gradski Vrt.
I wish Volpi & Co. would completely rebuild Kantrida and modernize it. I mean what stadium in Croatia has a better atmosphere, on a cliff overlooking the Kvarner?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY6hz0g3_-E
We should all go on BattleCam . Chime in
Cro Yugo 2:2 doesn’t hurt me because of Suker’s goal that clearly crossed the line but wasn’t called. Turkey was the #1 hurt but now it’s France 98.
At the Poljud fairgrounds i had the time of my life . Such a great place to watch soccer. I can not understand the rude comments being said about this beautiful place.
They have beer and everything at zadar stanove too and just take a piss in the bushes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trhl2Wtizpc last time it was 2-2 but they still had crnogorci on the team and it was called yuga now its Croatia v Serbia this match hurts more than turkey 2008 spain 2012 and france 1998.
Ziva = great Hajduk fan . What a pizdo
Thats macedonian i know beacuse i lived in tetovo back in the day
I can read serbian cyrillic and what that dude wrote aint in serbian. Or, he is a bad speller and has poor grammar.
@ливинг трутх,
Only if he couldve done this against spain… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLfL1ysGwIY
subicevac*
i could say the same for subiscevac lol
JOKE
You can drink beer at poljud. It might not be ice cold or cold at all but you get BEER…
I heard recently that Hajduk can’t afford janitorial staff, so they have prisoners in chain gangs cleaning up Poljud after the games.
@Chupe………I like to watch a game in comfort. I want a good, comfortable seat, a clean seat, good food, good beer, cold beer, wi-fi access……Poljud has not of that.
@nije bitno…..there are others stadiums better than Poljud. They may not be as big, but are more comfortable and much more fan friendly. Dugopolje has a very nice one.
wrote it*
Hey ziva you have a serbian secret admirer that took your name and spelled it in their fucked up writting…..
KO NE SKACE PRAVOSLAVAC JE! JE!
Poljud kicks ass
True fans go to small games not just the big games i didnt go to watch inter milan went the next week to watch inter zapresic thats what a true fan is
@ Ziva your thinking too much like an american we dont go to games to eat hotdogs and candy popcorn go to the kino if you want that AMERIKENAC its the atmospher and experience and its the best
Poljud and Makisimir are both a joke and need some serious upgrades. To say otherwise is foolish.
lol you actually made it to the bathroom? who were they playing, Istra?
For stadiums in croatia, it is the best…
Poljudska ljepotica my ass………
If you guys think Pljud is nice, you must have some low expectations.
There is nothing pleasant about Poljud. Dirty, bathrooms are terrible, no concessions, the seats are not comfortable, etc…
Maksimir is even worse.
Last time i was on Poljud was in 2011 when we played Stoke City. It looked fine to me…
@Anon/Cico/Sime
sorry not entire Hrvatska and have you been to Poljud lately, falling apart
@Ziva
How much are they charging for the fish? Do they deliver overseas?
Dinamo = Tudjmans toy of 1990s(Mafia club)
Hajduk= Ponos Dalmacije i cijele Hrvatske
Dinamo=RugloMaksimir
Hajduk=Poljudska ljepotica
I have a Gudelj hajduk dres from 1980s and its history Hajduk was Titos club back in that era history is history
Franjo Tudjman was FC Partizan president and in the 1990s big Dinamo fan im sorry CROATIA FC! Povijest he Povijest!
Correction, not trying to prove which one is more croatian. Just trying to prove that hajduk is not titos team nor is it jugo team that is supported by jugos.
Ahh, yes…..the old dinamo v hajduk debate of which club is more croatian argued by people who were not alive at the point of the time that is being discussed.
Not much going on, I get that. Game with the serbs is still over a mont away….So, fire away boys.
I rather discuss if Modric is a bust at Real, but this topic could get entertaining.
So, while you guys debate the merits of what so and so club did 60 years ago, I am left with my modern day jadan Hajduk. I heard they are having a fish fry tonight to raise money to buy energy-efficient windows at Poljud. Please help!!!!!!!
To take a line from Ante B. who posted something a couple of years ago.
“True, but what Dinamo Zagreb represented in old yugo was anything but communism. To root for Dinamo, the Croatian team, meant you were Croatian and anybody, even hajdukovci, can vouch for that no matter how much it might hurt their ego and pride.”—–Ante B. Feb 2011
It is quite comical when someone like Nije Bitno jumps up and down and protests. Jebi ga all fun and games.
No CAE thread up yet but Mandzukic just scored against Wolfsburg with a nice little overhead kick after a corner, chose not to celebrate against his former club. The man is on fire, let’s hope Pep Guardiola doesn’t ruin that.
This doesn’t clear Hajduk of nothing. Again, if anything, it only ascertains my points about these half truths. “They did what they had to.” Exactly.
I’ll write more later. Lunch time
@ Armada 87 yes that was the past , get it , the [past] . Get over it and move on ,punk .
“Činjenica je, ona neoboriva, da je Dinamo dekretom komunističkih vlasti osnovan u lipnju 1945. i nikakva gimnastika ne može taj fakat promijeniti. Jest, događalo se da su klubovi mijenjali svoja imena, simbole, značke, ambleme, boju dresa, ali se nije dogodilo do slučaja s maksimirskim klubom da svojataju tuđu tradiciju i rođendane. O tome sam već pisao, još jednom želim ponoviti lekciju.”
Dr. Prle , & Nije bitno , very smart men . Armada 69 , & Ante B. please check yourself . Green/wht/red & hask very Croatian
@Ante B……4th division and bankruptcy is never going to happen, but I honestly believe its a better solution than what is currently going on. Going into 4th division only works if the city no longer owns any part of the team and competant people can lead it from there, which is almsot impossible with Splicani. With the city being the majority shareholder right now, I just dont see a way for them to be viable long term in the present-day scenrio unless someone is willing to come in a buy all the shares from the city.
“A što se tiče zvijezde petokrake na dresu Hajduka, koja nije ni u kojem slučaju bila ona s grba tvornice ulja, mora se naglasiti da su “bijeli” oduvijek bio režimski klub, da su na svoj način služili aktualnim vlastima. No, nikad talijanskoj ili endehazijskoj. U Hajduku su koketirali, bilo im je drago kad se spominjalo, pa i tretiralo, kako su Titov klub.
To, međutim, nije bilo istina.
I read the article numerous amount of times and understand everything the man said. The question is, do you understand everything he was trying to say?
In my opinion this article clears Hajduks name of being Tito’s team, a communist team and so on…. He backed it up with facts. Under hajduks circumstances it had to do what it had to do but always in their hearts they were croats.
“Ono sto je istina to je da je Dinamo u korijenu imao hrvatski znacaj. I mnogi su kroz navijanje za taj klub zapravo manifestirali privezenost Hrvatskoj. Cesto puta je skandiranje imena Dinamo imalo taj hrvatski podtekst”
E sad kaj je tu sporno?
This is the same Reic who said “u Jugoslaviji Dinamo je bija hrvatski, Zvezda srpski, Partizan vojni a Hajduk jugoslavenski.” Don’t believe everything you read in SD, especially by Reic. In this article he even acknowledges what dinamovci have been saying about their own club and even Hajduk.
haha ok buddy….
No it’s not. It’s written by a Dalmatinac who is only proving our points for us.
hmmmm everybody is quiet… maybe in shock???? that article opens alot of doors to many discussions/debates clearing hajduks persona and turning the finger at dinamo for questioning…
Dinamovci and Hajdukovci who know how to read croatian read this article…
http://www.slobodnadalmacija.hr/Nogomet/tabid/84/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/64492/Default.aspx
Ziva,
If Hajduk goes bankrupt and into the fourth league, man, I can’t even think about it. That would be doomsday scenario like in Russia with the meteor. You think it’s a necessary evil that has to happen?
I would not root for Hajduk if it wasn’t the case, believe me. And I could give a rat’s ass who or what that british agent and secret society member “Josip Broz” liked or didn’t like.
How many of you Hajdukovci would wear a jersey from let’s say 1983?
Doktor Prle always on point!
Here’s the original:

http://www.seeklogo.com/images/H/Hajduk_Split-logo-DA68CFEAE0-seeklogo.com.gif
great “retro” logo…
Dinamo became a Hrvatsko ime after it put its Grb on its jersey and became synonymous with hrvatstvo. I forget how young you are
I find it comical that people label any team to any one person. It’s pointless and retarded…
The only solution for Hajduk is to go bankrupt and start from zero in the 4th division. Right now, the only thing they are doing is selling off players to pay their debt.
Here is hajduk in a nutshell…..They are in heavy debt, take out loans at very disadvantageous short term interest rates and then sell off their best players in order to pay off the disadvantageous short term interest rates. And yet, none of the overall debt accumulated over the years has been reduced………Hajduk Split ladies and gentlemen!!!!!
Hajduk is the Arkansas white trash or ghetto crnci that refuse to move out of their home even after getting the evection notice. They will wait until the sherrif shows up to be evicted. That is Hajduk’s fate. They just need someone to be the sherrif to show up and set them straight.
Tito loved Hajduk because they joined the Partizani in 1943 while the teams from Zagreb stayed in the NDH. If Gradanski bailed NDH, it would still be Gradanski today. The same people who bitch at Dinamo/then Croatia for being Njofra’s team have no right to be upset when Hajduk is referenced as Tito’s.
Yes, supposedly Tito liked Hajduk. But, as far as I can tell Hajduk didn’t receive any financial advantages during Tito’s time.
Look at Hajduk’s results in the 50 and 60s. Hajduk’s best performances came in the 70s, 20-plus years into Tito’s reign.
Dukicu ne kenjaj. You should then be in the fourth division. The BBB have plenty of reason to dislike Tudman.
Remember anything bad you say about Dinamo goes quadruple for Hajduk so lets not play this pissing contest.
I dont get the people who say Hajduk was tito’s team. The man liked the best which Hajduk is. Hitler loved german shepherds does that mean nobody should get them?
Good one Dukic and Hajduk should be playing in the third division. Wait they might go bankrupt. Never mind. By the way wasn’t Hajduk Tito’s team.
i love how dinamo fans hate tudman when the only reason theyre still important is cause of him. you guys should be playing second division now. ukrali prvenstvo!
dinamo. pravo hrvatsko ime!
@anon 8:27am
No one on the site is Ziva’s ass kicker. He just calls things correctly at times and this pisses you off??? Grow up, you are acting like that Cico/Sime character.
Serb or not, I think it’s good that Kovacic is getting lessons from Stankovic. Kovacic is good, but he needs all the mentoring he can get to become even better.
I found this article on styles of soccer different countries play. In the article it defines countries style of play, Do you all think they are dead on? what style in your opinion does Croatia fall in?
http://thechimes.morrisville.edu/2011-12/apr20/soccerstyles.html
The reason it is mentioned is because Mihajlovic has told all his players to applaud the anthem. The media is following up with the players to get their thinking on it.
I don’t care either way. The serbs can applaud or they can do nothing. It doesn’t changes anything. Same goes for our players. They can do what they want individually. As for me, I wouldn’t applaud.
@Anonymous…….actually I am and people like you have made me.
Ziva, you’re entitled to your opinion but applauding is customary, just like playing the anthems is customary.
Show some respect and man up. That’s my opinion.
Why would he admit he has thought long and hard about what he will do (and still hasn’t decided even though he doesn’t even know if he will play) if he doesn’t understand the significance?
As I said pravi cigan.
One of the anon is a Ziva ass kisser , & ziva your not all you think you are
Why is he a pravi cigan? I don’t expect Stankovic to applaud our anthem. Just like I don’t expect or want our guys to applaud the serb anthem.
This whole fucken nonsense about the serbs and if they will applaud our anthem or when our guys line up for our anthem if they put their right hand on the heart (ala Tudjman style). It’s all BS. I don’t give a shit if our guys put their hand on the heart or if they even sing the anthem. It’s all done for show anyway. All I want is a win.
Stanković još nije odlučio kako će ispratiti hrvatsku himnu.
“Dosta sam razmišljao o tome i zaista ne znam mogu li aplaudirati himni Hrvata.”
Pravi cigan!
Dinamo = duplo kruna
Hajduk = duplo govno
sounds about right for this year…
Great we have Stankovic mentoring Kovacic in Inter…. This is what Stankovic has to say about our game March 22…
http://www.index.hr/sport/clanak/stankovic-igrao-bih-na-maksimiru-i-da-mi-slome-obje-noge/662585.aspx
@ one of the Anonymous’…………..of course I am a fan of myself. If you are not a fan of yourself, then you should committ suicide.
Sinko, it sounds like you need help. I’m willing to be your mentor regarding sports, but I will also guide you and talk to you about life’s problems as well. I’ve yet to fully embrace twitter, but if the need does arise and you have any questions about life or even sports, you can reach me at @ziva_istina.
Cool piece from ESPN on Mateo Kovacic….
http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/espnfcunited/id/3526?cc=5901
I remember when Boban kicked the cop, Hajduk came to Australia and tore the red star of their shirts, to have the red and white checkers on your shirt was a huge thing, i still love the fact that we have a Croatian leauge!
Only dipshit on here is you and Cico/Sime.
Ziva calls it correctly once again about Hadjuk. Face it dumbass.
Great match for Lovren yesterday
Ziva is a fan of nobody but himself . Dip shit
This is why ziva je peder
This is why Ziva Istina if one of the best on the site. He calls it as is for everything. Svaka it cast.
Here you go, Ziva. Just found this on the internet way-back machine. Happy Valentine’s Day, man. – http://croatiansports.com/?p=1197
Good lord….not this again…..

Hajduk = duplo govno????
And I say this as Hajduk’s biggest fan.
Dinamo = govno
To Coline!!!! Svaka cast! DINAMO SAMPION
Colin, Well written article, keep up the good work.
