28 year-old Ivan Dodig gave #9 Richard Gasquet a scare in the third round of the 2013 Australian Open but ultimately didn’t have enough to pull off the upset. Dodig took the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 6-3 after being up a break. He rolled his ankle midway through the second, which slowed his game. Dodig and Gasquet went neck and neck in the third but the Frenchman ultimately took the set in a tiebreak. After failing to win the 3rd, Dodig’s confidence disapeared in the 4th and he lost 6-0. This was Dodig’s best grand slam performance to date and will hopefully be the beginning of his best season.
Marin Čilić threw away 1-0 and 2-1 leads to fall to #21 Andreas Seppi in five sets in the first grand slam of 2013. After being broken early in the first set, Čilić won the first set versus #21 Andreas Seppi in a tiebreak. Čilić then was broken again in the second and couldn’t get one back, losing his first set in the tournament. Marin picked up a break midway through the third and then held serve to take the set 6-2. Both men failed to hold serve in their first two games of the fourth set. Seppi broke at 4-4 and then held to force a deciding 5th set. After going up a break in the 5th, Čilić was then broken three times as his Aussie Open campaign crashed to its finish.
Our juniors are killing it atm. Havent lost a match yet
Um, no he cant……he has already played Davis Cup for Australia.
Tomic is 100% croatian. Both parents are croatian and migrated to Germany where Bernard was born. They then migrated to Australia. His girlfriend is also Croatian. So technically he can play davis cup for Germany.
yep………I’m sure that jersey chaser is with him for his inner being and not becoming a mini-celebrity down under.
@Ziva
It’s all about the money.
It always amazes when an ugly looking dude like Tomic is able to land a decent jersey chaser.
Either way, the kid is a douche.
@Jarac
You said it father must of been a jugo. Enough of them on this site as well.
On a side note I gotta give him credit for his new girlfriend

Ziva you were right about Tomic, I hear the announcers saying that he tried to change his last name or did, to seperate him self from the croatian side. Father must have been a jugo.
Um, tomic can’t play Davis cup for cro, he plays for Australia.
I don’t know why the harsh comments about CIlic. There is nothing in his game that suggests he can be a grand slam contender. Nothing. Maybe some people bought into the unrealistic expectations, but not me. He does nothing great. Serve is underwhelming for a guy his size, so he doesn’t get too many free points. The reason he can Hoover around the top ten is because he gets enough ranking points by doing very well at the lower level events that don’t feature any of top four players.
Too late for that bud…
Totally agree JerseyCro but at least Dodig had a dip and busted his gut trying to win. Cilic on the other hand who has been touted the next best thing in croatia constantly fails at the top level. Fancy loosing to seppi. Even Tomic beat seppi twice last week in the hopman cup and also sydney. I think Tomic should play davis cup for croatia.
hate to say it but Cilic is such a loser, mentally he stinks
You can’t expect more from Dodig, this guy pretty much reached his peak and will only go down from here
I watched cilic at melbourne park yesterday and he basically threw that match away. Fancy loosing that last set 6-2 after being 2-0 up with a break. He totally tanked it when it got a bit tough. He will never win a grand slam and I can’t even understand how he is ranked 12 in the world.
Worst part of it all is that he wouldve been playing the #35 player next round for a spot in the quarters
Please Vekic, Konjuh, or someone else get good quickly
Well this is basically done…..hopefully Federer takes care of business tonight against that punk Tomic.
Damn it Cilic
I am watching this Cilic match and maybe he can come back in this fifth set, but I just don’t see him being a player that can win big tournaments. There is nothing wrong with that and there are plenty of smaller tourneys for him to get good results and make money and ranking points, but there is nothing in his game where he excells. His serve is bad considering his frame and size.
Konjuh just turned 15 less than a month ago. Pretty impressive prospect.
Also, Ana Konjuh (#3 junior seed) is playing her 1st round match. Vekic and Konjuh are the two to keep your eyes in for the future. Konjuh is 15
Tough tiebreak to lose for Dodig. Dont see him coming back from down 2-1 but still a good fight against a top 10 guy
Good start Cilic
Dodig needs a clothing and apparel supplier. He has a Croatian flag patch sewed over the logo of whatever clothing supplier he is wearing. Contract with them must have ended. I think he used to be with lotto.
