After a turbulent 2nd set with over a dozen unforced errors, Vekić rallied in the 3rd set to defeat Czech 17 year-old Fruhvirtova 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Vekić will now play #5 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinal round Wednesday in Melbourne. This matches the farthest Vekić has ever gone in a Grand Slam as she made it to the US Open quarters in 2019.
I’d throw her down =U=
Was this the same Furhvitova she beat a couple weeks back at Kooyong or was this the other one? I know there’s two of them and they are both really young.
Yes, it was. Vekic beat Linda at Kooyong Classic and also today. Linda is 17 years of age, but she also has a younger sister 16 years of age.
Yeah Sabalenka is favoured for sure. I think Maminjo said in the other thread Donna never had a high ceiling, which suggests to me he’s never seen her play because as i said in there for YEARS she was talked about as the next Sharapova and a grand slam champ (same as Coric) and obv it didn’t work out for either. The commentators have been saying this year she is finally starting to live up to some of her potential. Personally i see her weakness as a mental one, she has heaps of power.
This is now her 10th win in a row here in Australia, she has not lost yet this year, so even if she loses in the QF, a great trip down under for her and will move her up the rankings, hopefully leading to a really positive year for her. Been a pleasure to watch her play this year.
From what I recall, it was Konjuh that was considered our biggest talent from that generation.
Then Konjuh had that bum elbow and like 11 surgeries, so it ruined her career.
We don’t seem to have much luck regarding injuries with tennis players do we? Not sure why but they all seem prone. One wonders what Mario Ancic could’ve achieved if he didn’t fall ill…
Excellent first set, then fell apart in the second with so many unforced errors.
Did well to come back and win the third set. Her opponent to me looks like she is a bit up herself the way she was celebrating some of her winning shots.
Also watched Sabalenka and she looked impressive in dispatching Bencic in straight sets. Sabalenka is a strong favorite to win. Odds in her favour 65:35.
Just found out that Vekic has a 5 – 1 head-to-head record against Sabalenka. So maybe the odds are in Donna’s favor?
Awesome stuff. I watched it, her opponent was tricky. It ended up being much closer than I thought but a win is a win. Go Donna!
