It was a lackluster first half in Oslo as Norway and Croatia played a scoreless affair in a friendly match. There was little offense by the Vatreni with Ivan Perišić replacing an ill Luka Modrić in the midfield. The attacking duo of Mario Mandžukić and Nikica Jelavić had few touches, and even fewer scoring chances. Without a creative midfielder to dictate the pace, Croatia looked dull at best. Stipe Pletikosa, however, looked alert in goal and made a critical save halfway through the first on a point blank shot.
Danijel Pranjić, Ognjen Vukojević and Ivicia Olić came in for Strinić, Dujmović and Jelavić to start the second half.
Croatia played more of the same lame style of soccer in the second half with the exception of a powerful Mandžukić shot which was parried away 40 seconds into the restart. Substitute Pranjić played an absolutely awful ball back to Pletikosa in the 55′ which should have lead to a Norway goal, but the ball was placed over the bar. Olić was subbed off within minutes of being introduced and his injury in still unknown. Croatia finally got the kickstart they needed in the 79′ when Srna swung in a perfect cross from the right side which found the head of Eduardo, who angled in the ball inside the left post for a 1-0 Croatia lead. It would not stay that way as Norway equalized off a corner with only one minute left in injury time off the head of Elyounoussi to force a 1-1 draw.
Albeit a friendly, there was little competitiveness from Croatia in this Norway friendly only eight days away from their Euro 2012 opening match versus Ireland. Should we be worried or will the re-introduction of Luka Modrić into this squad make everything ok for Croatia?
Luka Modrić did not start in the Norway friendly due to a virus he picked up earlier in the week. Here was Croatia’s starting XI vs. Norway:
Mario Mandžukić-Nikica Jelavić
Ivan Rakitić-Ivan Perišić-Tomislav Dujmović-Darijo Srna
Ivan Strinić-Josip Šimunić-Gordon Schildenfeld-Domagoj Vida
Stipe Pletikosa

Mihovil- Its cool man. The reason I didn’t go all hardcore ripping on you back is because you are a productive poster. You aren’t a troll that posts garbage, you post things that I actually want to read.
Video should be up Saturday hopefully. I want to do a hype video for each game.
DuDu paid his dues. Let him play.
Nobody should ever rip on the Brazilian-born Hrvat.
@ AllenOutraged
Eduardo should start with Jelavic but I believe Bilic will do the Jelavic/Mandžukić route.
Allen, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the comments I made to you a couple of weeks ago as the personal shots were way out of line and I should not have said them. You and I are both sports enthusiasts entwined with strong personal opinions, which is fine, but there is still no excuse for the things I said.
I look forward to your next video project!
🙂
People that still rip on Eduardo for being a Brazilian Hrvati jut goes to show how pathetic and ignorant the Croatia fan base is. Then again, nothing surprises me from some of you nut jobs these days.
cromo – mandzukic has done better than kalinic in recent history…wouldnt you agree?
@cromo…..keep at it with your conspiracy theory. Nobody is telling Bilic who to play. If they were, Sammir (Mamic’s boy) would be on the roster.
@Armada…..hey, i hope you are correct about the Brazilian-born Hrvat. I just don’t think he can play at a high level in multiple games. I hope I am wrong. But, after seeing everything from our other forwards I would start him.
Anyone else suspicious that Mandzukic gets too much time on the field when he shouldnt? My paranoia tells me there’s someone on Bilic’s and the HNS’s ass pulling some strings and making sure Mandza gets every chance possible to play. Realistically, he can’t compare to any of our strikers. Back in 2008 it was a race between him and Kalinic of the 2 young promising strikers, Bilic opted to constantly play Mandzukic and it hasn’t really paid off too well. I keep pondering the idea of what Kalinic would be like now if he had gotten half the playing time and development Mandzukic has had. He was kinda lucky to score against Turkey, he did well in chasing the long cross but aside from that one header into the goal, he doesn’t know to pass, control, shoot or even finish anything dangerous. Add in his complete refusal to chase the ball or put pressure on defenders and you have a quite useless striker. Something suspicious about him coming from Dinamo and a well-known family that doesn’t sit well with me. It’s probably Mamic making sure he’s constantly on the big stage so Dinamo Zagreb looks like the youth gold mine it is so he can pocket more profit from player sales. Bilic had a golden chance to put Jelavic into our system against Norway and see how he can work, but instead he took him off at halftime and left Mandza on. I’m not buying it, back when Bilic was first appointed if you werent following team rules and schedule, you’d be dropped from the squad (ie, suspending Srna, Olic and a few others for sneaking out and partying before the Russia game). Now, it looks like there’s someone telling him what stupidity to do next, like in the qualifiers when he played Mandzukic as a lone striker despite his lack of goals or form. Anyway, that’s my take. Dudu has done more than enough to be able to start, Srna and Modric always seem to find him with perfect delivery and he puts them away no questions asked. When it’s any other striker, it’s always a hit or miss, but Dudu hardly ever misses given the chance.
@ Dudu fans/haters
We can say what we want about Eduardo:
-He’s a “Brazilian-born Hrvat”
-He’s never been the same since that ugly tackle by Martin Taylor
-He hardly gets anytime at Shakhtar
Whatever the case, Dudu still has the best touch and still is the most clinical finisher we have, compared to the rest of our options at forward. He can setup plays, make pin-point passes and finish with the best of them, even if he has lost a step of two.
I was riding the Mandzukic-Jelavic option the last few months as the ideal forward combo for the Euro’s, but I think we should have a Dudu-Jelavic combo. It’s the best of both worlds: Nikica is a big dude, good in the air and can finish pretty well in and around the box. Dudu is more finesse and we should use him as a 2nd striker option, where he’ll have the ability to create as well as take a pass and finish with the accuracy we’ve all come to expect from him.
I love how everyone i on the eduardo ban wagan again but in november when Olic Mandzukic scored against turkey everone was saying Olic king Madzukic they run and press, People were like dont call eduardo blah blah i will ay this without eduardo Euro 2008 whould not have been possible,he deserves to start all the time as long as he i healthy and fit He should be automatic starter no matter what DUDU care.
Jut finihed watching Ireland game i can say it will be a bore fest Croatia v Ireland is a toss up ireland showed nothing today much like croatia v norway eduardo will be difference once more for Bilic as he will score a half chance v Ireland and i say 1-0 croatia. all the build up games for us ireland italy those 3 showed nothing Spain hould win 1 place in this group and the other 3 lets see how hings play out!!!!!
Olic’s injury, as much as it sucks for him, is a blessing in disguise for Hrvatska. Sure lots of people love him, including me, for his work ethic and his occasional goal, but i think this will force Bilic to play Dudu. Dudu is the only striker we have who has consistently scored and he is the most skilled out of our forwards – being able to playmake as well as finish in front of the net. Jelavic and Eduardo up top if we play 4-4-2 will be the most successful for us.
What’s with people jumping ship all ready?
There is no need to worry cause as we have seen Eduardo can still score goals quite often. Norway is not a horrible team by any means, they threw in a goal at the very last minute of the game, which we seem to let happen here and there anyway, so don’t jump ship just yet.
Olic being ruled out is not a huge dent in our striking force as our top 4 strikers are in the same area when it comes to our attack.
I would love to see a 4-1-2-1-2 formation, huge fan of it. Was thinking about it the other day:
GK: Pletikosa
RB: Corluka
RCB: Vida
LCB: Schildenfield
LB: Strinic
CDM: Modric
RM: Srna
LM: Perisic
CAM: Eduardo
RS: Mandzukic
LS: Jelavic
Overview:
Corluka – His natural position overall, & I would like to see him back on the right wing making runs up with Srna to cross these attacks in.
Modric – I personally believe Modric can be Niko Kovac’s replacement, Modric’s defense capability isn’t as good as Kovac’s. Modric can work his magic from this position as he does for Tottenham, with a quicker winger on the left it’ll open more options for him.
Modric is known for his great passes but that alone wouldn’t make him a star player he is today. He brings up the defensive line & game in the opposing teams half. When that is done there is less pressure on our defenders. If the run/counter attack were to be buffed the ball could go right back to Modric if needed. Luka could also work with long balls into the box once the wingers stretch the defensive line and likely Jelavic will get quality service. Lastly Modric isn’t a push over type player, he fits in real well in the EPL & I’m sure he can cope with the CDM position all together.
Eduardo – Eduardo in the deep midfield attacking role? Well he has played in the midfield position before, more so near the right wing. All that aside Eduardo can pass quite effectively, as we have seen the past two friendlies. Being in this position would give us a 3rd striker in the box area on our counter attacks if the opposing line is stretched like a temporary 4-3-3 & can fold back to a 4-1-2-1-2, 4-1-3-2, 4-4-2 formation quite quickly on the defense.
It is only a dream, if I were going to put money down I would bet on Bilic using a 4-4-2 formation, he is predictable but given that he is a very good coach, his stats show for it.
Looks like Olic will stick around for 2014 since he will is 2012 hahah, thanks olic for 10 years of comedey and some good times. Our midfield needs to be strong and them the back 4 will play off them but if teams pas our midfield our obrana will collapse cross the ball to edaurdo jealvic in the box long balls to those two. i hope we beat ireland draw spain and italy i would be happy!
@Slavonac…..I do not feeling sorry when large countries get injuries. They have the ability to tap into their large immigrant populations which I think is wrong but none the less they have depth that we do not.
@ Tom- I disagree…I hope the Italians play us with all their players and we hopefully beat them…if they dont and we lose…what a shame that will be!
@Haet there are no jobs in Croatia and the state has no budget. Who will pay for these guests? BTW Israel is starting to stop its migrant problems. Croats will not take to thousands of foreigners moving in. We are to small to matter. The real concern is the mess next door called Bosnia. I think we should protect any Croats left there and micro chip all others.
@Mihovil.. This is good news if we can get past Ireland.
Barzagli, Balotelli injuries add to Italy woes

Damn you Jarac. You know me too well. That’s what happens when you’re forced to go to church every Sunday.
@Goldenchild
Is it christmas or easter already?
Kalinic gets the call up for sure. He was the last one to be dropped, and he’s been the most productive for Hrvatska recently out of all the other options. This may be a blow, but it also may turn into a blessing. I’m going to church this week, and I suggest you all do the same.
And wouldn’t Srna and Pranjic provide better crosses comared to Strinic and Vida? hence a more offensive defense.
@Ziva, I was agreeing with you knucklehead. Srna at right back instead of Vida doesn’t really improve the defense in that position, but improves the offense in that position. Would you say Pranjic at left back is an improvement offensively over Strinic in that position? Then Corluka and Vida or the ‘Austrian born Hrvat’ at CB. Wouldn’t this be a backline more adept at going forward, better able to string passes to the midfield as compared to the lineup against Norway (w/ Corluka instead of Simunic), while not really losing anything defensively? Hence, a more offensive defense.
http://www.goal.com/en/news/2898/euro-2012/2012/06/04/3147891/olic-ruled-out-of-euro-2012-with-thigh-injury
i wonder which striker will be called up next if any of them eduardo, jelavic or mario is injured now…will it be klasnic? petric? vukusic? Budan?
Hahaha I’m about 30 posts too late on that news ha. My mistake.
Sky Sports just reported that Olic is ruled out of Euro due to a thigh injury and Kalinic is being called up. Anyone know anything about this?????????????
Nepoznat – its been a long time since “killer” has been an influential part to his team…yeah he has scored some great goals and his per game is great…but there’s a reason Klasnic doesn’t get playing time…
@Nepoznat……that ws 4 years ago.
Since Bilic did not call up Kalsnic on his initial list, the only logical shoice today to call up and replace Olic is Kalinic. He was not ging to call up someone who has been on vacation for almost a month.
@jim I think Iniesta would be #2 since he isn’t on the list yet.
@ Slavonac from Canada

Shay Given may have a limp.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/euro2012/article-2154215/Euro-2012-Shay-Given-insists-fit-Croatia-clash.html
@jm……the rankings are good. No shock that Modric is the only one on that list.
@Anonymous, join the site already you punk!
” That hilarious. What Football have you idiots been watching? You guys are such homers, honestly. Look at his goal scoring record for Croatia. How many goals has this guy scored? 11 or 12 in over 40 appearances.”
do you not recall it was Klasnic who scored the goal against Turkey in 08 that should’ve put us through (had we been able to make our substitute and calm down for a second after the goal, recollect, gather up, etc)?
The match with Ireland scares me because the Irish have enthusiasm and chemistry going for them.
They have nothing to lose and can play with enjoyment. Croatia needs some guys to step up.
Rakitic is one that’s needs to set up.
@ jm
I think those rankings are just about right. In terms of Croatian players, who else could realistically crack the Top 40? Maybe Srna?
I didnt see the game against Norway but I’ve read several comments from several websites…its important to note that these games, although they dont mean much have importance in some particular areas…every coach implements and trains for certain scenarios during a game…so results dont mean everything…but what does mean something is if the players actually were able to take what they learned during their training and utilize it during the game…its like going from theory to practicum! it also allows coaches and their staff to see or identify ceratin areas of the game they work on…and none of us have any idea what those things are…these days soccer is incredibly tactical…so if the focus was in a particular area…and the team achieved what they wanted in that area then great…yes…results matter but far more when the games have meaning!
for those of you who make stupid comments about Olic…i say this…you have very little understanding of his value! not only does he put pressure on defending because of his work ethic…he is normally in the right place at the right time…not every valuable player has to be skilled like iniesta or suker…olic has his worth…hence the very reason he plays and has played for some great teams! the other part that has more values is his attitude towards his teammates…he is an infectious individual whether he is playing or on the bench…people respect him and he has the attitude of “svi za jedan, jedan za sve”…anyone in team sports knows how important that is…when your down a goal with 15 minutes to play and your teammate sacrifices his body for his team…trust me…his teammates feel a burst of energy…he’s infectious and far more valuable than you give him credit for!
Sunday can’t come soon enough…I just hope I dont regret saying that…there are several Hrvati already making arrangements for this game…we’ve organized a huge TV and I know the atmosphere is gonna be electric…i just hope we can win our first game and get some confidence!
espn is doing a top 40 players of the euro. http://espnfc.com/us/en/blogs/Euro2012top40players
i found it kind of interesting. here are the total players per country ranked their “top 40” below. only croatian is modric (number 11). spain with 9, germany 8. i know those teams are good, but are they that good? also, they’ve only announced up to number 3 so far. i assumed ronaldo was one of the other top 1 or 2 players. couldn’t think of the other
Grand Total 39
SPA 9
GER 8
ITA 5
ENG 4
FRA 4
NED 4
por 2
CRO 1
DEN 1

Olic’s speed will be missed for sure. He is a great option for third striker off the bench to outrun a tired defense. We will miss that advantage he brings. Sucks because who knows if he’ll get to play in another international tourney. Would have been nice to see him score on Buffon to give the papers something to talk about (10 years later….another goal!). But it won’t happen now. CS…..it’s a few days away from the tourney, first major in 4 years for Cro, you guys should be pumping out the articles to give us somewhere to go and talk since my office has no one I can talk soccer with (all hockey folk here). I know you guys reside out west so I can understand the time difference (early morning) being a factor.
Olic…YYYYYYEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!
@ The Olic news
Personally, I think the Olic news isn’t that big of a blow. I think for Slaven, Olic would of been our 4th striker (Jelavic-Mandzukic/Dudu-Olic). He’s a fantastic sub option when the offense needs a bit of a jump-start and I love what he can bring, but realistically, I’m not sure how much time he would of really gotten at these Euro’s… Of course I’d rather see him on the pitch than Kalinic, but I think we really have to worry about Mandza, Dudu and Jelavic pumping in some goals for us.
Beyond what formations or pairings on the backline and up front, I think a WAYY bigger question looms:
Why haven’t we strung together 2-3 good results in the past 2-3 years? I feel like every game is hit or miss. I’m not asking for a 20 game unbeaten streak, but can we just have maybe 5 straight games of good results? I’m fine with ties even as long as we play solid football and bust our butts. A great example is the our last few quals, the Turkey playoff games and our last set of friendlies. We go from playing amazing, entertaining football (Turkey, Estonia, Israel) to games where our offense is stagnant and our defense is like Swiss cheese (Sweden, Norway, Greece)
Now look at the teams we did “well” against. Teams that aren’t rated that highly and really not at the same level as us. Also, none of them are in the top 25 of the FIFA World Rankings, just to note (Yes, I know the FIFA rankings are flawed, but it’s a decent indicator)
Now look at the teams we did “badly against”. Teams that are either in the top 25 (Norway) or have made it to the Euro (Sweden, Greece). Teams that have the talent and can play up to or better than the level we do.
I know it’s a small sample and I know I’m also taking some meaningless friendlies into account, but can we just not hang with the ‘big boy’ sides anymore? Yes, when it mattered, we took care of business against the Turks. But is dealing with Norway and Sweden that much trouble for us? I guess I might be wrong and the boys didn’t give it their all since I’m sure no one was trying to get injured in these game, but if I’m not wrong and this logic is right, we’re gonna be up shits creek vs. Italy & Spain.
Again, I hope I’m wrong. Hopefully this just boils down to us not taking friendlies seriously and turning it on come the big showdowns…
No Olic? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 🙁
“A proven scorer/winner like Killer”? That hilarious. What Football have you idiots been watching? You guys are such homers, honestly. Look at his goal scoring record for Croatia. How many goals has this guy scored? 11 or 12 in over 40 appearances.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/jun/04/euro-2012-croatia-tactical-analysis
Bilic fails again… perfect chance to call up proven scorer/winner Killer and he goes with Kalinic aargh. Only positive about not winning this tourney is that Bilic will finally be gone (2 years too late unfortunately)
Olic out just great. How is Lovern any miracles? I swear these guys are like china dolls. Ratkic needs to step into the Dookie and perform already.
Ivica Olić ipak neće na Euro! Bilić reaktivirao poziv Nikoli Kaliniću!
http://tinyurl.com/cg487s3
Reports are the Olic is out. Kalinic has been called up.
UEFA has evidently singled out Srna as an individual for the referees to keep an eye on and not tolerate antics from.
There have been complaints about the back-line. But the only way to tell how good/bad they are is if you compare them against the upcoming opposition.
People complain about Vida at RB. But I think he and Srna can handle McCready, Ireland’s LW. And I think Strinic can handle the 33 year old Duff. Doyle and Keane lack the finishing touch, and I think Corluka-Simunic/Schifo are more than capable of handling the two forwards. Before people complain about our defense, compare them to our next opponent. All that counts is that they are good enough to do the job for this match. Which they are, worry about Spain and Italy later. As 3 pts here is vital.
49 people so far in our Euro 2012 pool. Come on, where is everyone. We had 150 in our fantasy EPL game.
https://croatiansports.com/?p=8660
.
Oh, and stop bagging Vida. Did you guys watch the Norway game? He was the only one who for some reason isn’t afraid to get dirty and make a tackle. Schindenfeld, Simunic and even Corluka are solid minded defenders who are good in the air and at reading the game, but when they get beaten it’s over. Look what happened against Israel, they broke away towards our goal and instead of tackling or trying to win the ball, our defenders simply just ran along with them until they scored. Look at Norways chance right infront of goal, Vida reacted instantly by going down and blocking the shot. That’s what we need, players who are confident and prepared to tackle, and, worst case scenario, take one for the team. If you can sneak in a dirty tackle when your opponent has the ball to an empty goal in the last minute, why wouldn’t you do it? Most of our players, even the agro Simunic, don’t have it in them to get sent off and stop the goal. Vida looks reckless and ‘stupid’ enough to do it, and that’s what we need! Our defense is too careful and soft, we hardly ever cause injuries or muscle players off the ball even though we have the players to do it. They’re a bunch of girls at times. Vida will probably get raped against Spain but at least he’l make a damn tackle instead of watching the ball go in.
whether eduardo is in form or not, he’s the only striker we have who knows where the goal is. Jelavic has been doing it for Everton but he’s yet to show he can fit into our system and replicate that goalscoring form for us, and I blame Bilic for not giving him a proper run in the Norway game. Instead, he took him out and let the lazy Mandzukic (who has played plenty for us recently) stay in and do nothing as usual. Nice going!
Eduardo can score from headers, where we are most dangerous, and he has a natural finishing for goal. Why take the risk with 2 strikers who can’t do that? I’d personally like to see us attack Spain as well, their defense is nothing spectacular and can easily be broken especially with Modric and Srna’s creativity and delivery. If we sit back and try to defend, the one thing we are the worst at, then we’l choke and get raped. That’s what we did against Greece and we hardly had a chance on goal and still conceded 2 silly goals.

Any video from Alpine Village Saturday ?
From a more optimistic and less cynical perspective, I was listening to some non-biased analyst take on the game. The gist of what they said was this…
the game, though having a disappointing result for Croatia, was still positive in some respects. Norway, though not a good team, is a very tough team to break down and score on. Croatia accomplished that without key players like Modric and Corluka playing. England barely did any better against Norway in the previous friendly.
You have to accept that it was a friendly, and the entire team wasn’t playing, or for that matter, going full out (except for Srna giving 100% to his antics). Plenty of teams have crappy friendly performances prior to tournaments, then blow up when the real game time comes. If it wasn’t for Kranjcar’s statue impression instead of marking the guy at the back post, we would have had a win (though not a convincing or necessarily deserved one).
I’m not saying everything is great or I’m super optimistic, but there’s reason not to be purely cynical and negative based on the Norway friendly.
Caught the replay. Guys, fucking relax. Kaj vam je? You can tell when our players’ heads are in it and when they’re not. Rest assured you’ll be able to tell within the first five minutes against Ireland if our boys came to play or not. When the lights come on and our backs are against the wall, we always show up. You guys are over analyzing like a bunch of fucking babe. Chillajte vec jednom. Mi Hrvati!
He missed an Ivica Olic “crap” goal.
Prediction:
Italy-Spain 1-2
Croatia-Ireland 2-2
Italy-Croatia 2-1
Spain-Ireland 3-1
Croatia-Spain 1-1
Italy-Ireland 0-1
Spain- 7
Ireland-4
Italy-3
Croatia-2
@ mali HRVAT
For sure.
Considering it was Canada’s first and only game prior to the WC qualifiers it was not a bad showing at all.
If Junior Hoilett and Jonathan de Guzmán ever decide to play for Canada they could have a decent side. They would be much improved if that were to happen.
I would really like to know how Simeon Jackson misses the net on that awesome play and setup by DeRosario??
Not bad for a 36 year old MLS player!! He and DeRosario looked good, although Jazic made a lot of runs that his fellow Canucks ignored.
@ mali HRVAT
“I prefer Corluka at RB, but I know he was sparingly used as a defensive midfielder at Man City.”
He was good at the role when called upon with Man City.
“Ante Jazic had a solid 86 minutes for Canada’s unfortunate draw with the U.S.”
He was solid!
@Denis:
I prefer Corluka at RB, but I know he was sparingly used as a defensive midfielder at Man City. I don’t think centerback is a good position for him.
I agree about Vida and the distractions. He probably still has Bundesliga money burning a hole in his pocket.
Petrovic was a DRIVEN PROFESSIONAL. He wanted to play to his potential and wanted to represent Croatia. Vida appears to have talent, but time will tell if he escapes Zagreb.
Croatians Around North America:
Ante Jazic had a solid 86 minutes for Canada’s unfortunate draw with the U.S.
Vida is the one of the few options we have for our defense. As we are a little short in this area. Vida can do the job against Ireland.
Ireland have a few key players: Given is dependable. O’shea is solid. Duff and McGeady pose the main attacking threat. Keane plays in the MLS and is no longer the player he was.
Ireland still lack quality in the attacking third. They are going to look to impose themselves physically on the Croats. I still reckon Vatreni will beat them. Croatia drew Ireland while playing at only half their ability. And this time around Vatreni will show up.
@Horvat,
My sources tell me that Vida is not an alcoholic, but he just likes to have drinks with the boys way more than anyone else on the team.
Being from okolice Sibenik, I remember people telling me about Drazen Petrovic and his days in Sibenik. Dude would go out with the boys to celebrate the new year sipping on mineral water. Somewhere between 12:30- 1:00am, Drazen would take off, turn in, and be up in the morning for a training session.
So many distractions for Vida in Zagreb. Dude has money, friends and family calling him for drinks-parties… and did I fail to mention the little purgerice ?
Vida needs that german discipline to develop into a Niko Kovac type player.
@Josip B,
If Olic goes down, Bilic will pick up another striker. No way he goes to Poland with only three strikers. My guess is Kalinic.
@Mali Hrvat,
Yes, Toure is tall. But my point was that you can only name a couple of 6’3″ or taller defensive midfielders. Corluka is 6’4″. I still like him as a RB or LB and if needed a CB.
@Mihovil,
Im pulling for Vida. Hopefully, Stimac can see this and give him a shot. However, dude needs to leave Dinamo. Hopefully, he shines at Euro and gets a look from a team in a top 4 league.
It’s a shame if Vida has a drinking problem. I think he has potential to be a very good CB and possible DM.
@ mali HRVAT
“Drawing a yellow card out of those players (DeJong, etc.) isn’t always easy. The officiating is a huge variable in that strategy.”
It is a massive variable in that strategy and a massive variable in general when it comes to outcomes of games. Great point!
“I hope you are right about Vida and the CDM position.”
We need a better solution @ that position for the future and I hope it pans out.
@ Denis Svirčić
“Vida has the talent, but he also has a drinking problem.”
I like him already!
“Vida has the potential, the only way to test this potential is with a transfer out of Dinamo.”
He needs that and the process of moving him into the CDM role has to begin. Hopefully the powers that be try utilizing him in that role.
Call up Vukusic
What are we going to do if in fact Olic is hurt? Call up Kalinic? Maybe somebody else like Kovacic? What if by some miracle Lovren is doing better, do we replace Olic with him and lose a striker to try and shore up our terrible back line?
As for the formations/lineup:
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Bilic try experimenting (with negative results) with other than 4-4-2 formations during the failed World Cup 10′ qualifying ?
None of our strikers (other than the old pre-injury Dudu) seems to be able to function effectively as a lone striker. Also, our lack of defensive mids further hurts us in a 4-2-3-1
@Denis….correct on Vida. He and his boys beat up some guy at a bar/club. I think it was less than a year ago. Who knows what took place. Not really a big issue.
Someone made the comment about playing Simunic at LB…..I don’t think he can play there anymore at this stage of his career.
@Flegma…..you make it seem like Bilic is at fault for the lack of goal scoring. Bilic can only use what is available to him.
Yaya Toure 6’3″
@Mali Hrvat,
Mark van Bommel is 6’1″ and Nigel de Jong is 5’9″. All short comparing to the 6’4″ Corluka.
@Mihovil,
I agree with you on Owen Hargraves. Hell of a player.
I also agree with you on Vida. Dude has CDM written all over him. Some “Ziva Istina” type of people in Croatia have told me that Vida has the talent, but he also has a drinking problem. Vida already got in a little bit of trouble a few years back by being “in the wrong place at the wrong time” at a bar with friends. Also, I think that Vida isnt tested at Dinamo playing against mediocre opposition day in day out.
Vida has the potential, the only way to test this potential is with a transfer out of Dinamo.
@poglavnik,
I agree with you. I’m a big fan of Yaya Toure.
Yes i think vida at dm would be great! But debilic doesnt have a clue 6 years under Bilic Eduardo 21 goals thats all i have to say. The rest of the strikers that played under DeBilic Olic Klasnic Budan Petric Jelavic Mandzukic Kalinic combined 36 goals Eduardo alone 23.
@Mihovil:
I agree about Hargreaves. Javier Zanetti is also impressive, although he is over the hill. I also agree that DeJong is a hack, but sometimes coaches want the physical presence in the midfield.
Drawing a yellow card out of those players (DeJong, etc.) isn’t always easy. The officiating is a huge variable in that strategy.
I hope you are right about Vida and the CDM position.
@Denis Svircic
Yaya Toure is the new Vieira.
I think he’s one of the best players in the world right now.
ya srna was terrible but still he should play rb and ilicevic rm like how ive been wanting for a while. still waiting hope ill see it happen come nxt sunday. also rakitic and modric in the middle would be great instead of dujmo
@ Denis Svirčić
“Vukojevic was nicknamed the Croatian pitbull, dude can run around all game like Ivica Olic, but he commits silly fouls and finds himself out of position all the time.”
His positional play and passing efficiency leave alot to the imagination to put it mildly.
@ mali HRVAT
“Good DM vary in size. Nigel DeJong,Von Bommel etc. are on the bigger side. DeJong and Von Bommel can be brutal but are terribly effective in that role.”
Agreed on the size variable.
DeJong is a somewhat of a hack and Von Bommel can be dealt with although he can be quite effective as you said. The best way to deal with them is go @ them early in the game to try and draw the yellow card and then they are neutralized from the game they normally play.
Owen Hargreaves was simply amazing at the CDM role as he could do everything! Shoot, score, run all day and all night, take away the passing lanes like there is no tomorrow, and shut you down defensively. Those players are hard to find as he was super technically gifted for the role he was asked to perform. If you get a chance refer to the England Portugal game from WC 2006. England was a man down and Owen was by far the best player on the field.
Corluka can play any defensive role if need be as he is utility personified. He is more valuable on the back line but I would like to take the Denis Svirčić route and agree to the correct me if I am wrong theory as well.
Vida has the CDM position written all over him as a wave towards the future.
I know our Obrana is not strong why not just move joe simunic to left back since pranjic sucks and peple hate strinic i dont know why, play Vida Carli Scifo SImunic back4 have 4 cbs play the back line?
@ Horvat its not the formation it the players are not just good enough we praise them too much and for what some players are not NT material, and Bilics lack of calling young players like the under 21 CBs Kelic and Pavlovic the fact is i these two played for dinamo or hajduk they would have gone to 2012 Jurica Buljat i not a good player. We are always wrong we needed to rebuild after 2010 fail, we ad an ok group and it wa time to rebuild where wc 2014 our group is strong and i dont know if we will go, thats in september,
Euro 2012 i hope we play fine and our 11 should be Srna Carli Scifo Strinic Ilicevic Vukojevic Modric Perisic Eduardo Jelavic. Srna should just play at rb i dont care hes the captain work at defending.
@Denis:
Good DM vary in size. Nigel DeJong,Von Bommel etc. are on the bigger side. DeJong and Von Bommel can be brutal but are terribly effective in that role.
I agree with your assessment of Vukojevic. Sometimes, his passing lets me down.
Corluka is a smart player, and his defensive positioning skills are good. Even though he is slow it takes a skilled player to take him on one on one. Marin and Ronaldo come to mind during CL play.
I’m not an expert in soccer tactics and never will be but tell me what you think.
I think the formation Bilic is using has not been working for a long time now. It appears as though he plays with two defensive mids, two attacking mids and two strikers. It may be better for him to try having two defensive mids (Rakiic/Dujmovic/Vukojevic/maybe even Badelj), Modric behind a lone striker, and a winger on each wing. What good is it to have two strikers if they stand up front all match, bareley touching the ball because they have no service.
What happened to the days when we used to see Srna, Pranjic, Rakitic, Corluka etc.making beautiful runs down the wings, making crosses and scoring opertunities for the strikers. The fact that Croatia has good midfielders but create so few chances for the strikers is an indication that something is seriously wrong. I don’t know what it will take Bilic to see that this formation is not working.
Having two strikers may have worked when Cro had decent defense and Niko Kovac in front of them. Because they had a strong back end they were able to attack with Modric begind the two strikers and a winger on each wing.
Playing with one striker may not be the ideal formation in Bilic’s sight, but he has to work with what he has.
It not just one game it been like this for 4 years.
Offensive back line??????? Well, their play is offensive.
With who???? Let’s be realistic here. These are the best players we have. We are not Spain where we can control possession the entire game.
LB has been an issue since Jarni sopped playing. Look at our three options for the spot. Strinic (that is his natural spot), Pranjic (can play out it, but not his role) or Corluka (can play, but not his role). I know Corluka played well against Turkey at that spot, but I really doubt he can play it every game. Maybe if Lovren was available we could afford to play Corluka at LB, but we don’t have that option or luxury.
Vida and Simunic have not played a meaningful match since early December.
Schildenfeld has been average
@Mali Hrvat,
Correct me if I am wrong, but most good defensive midfielders are short and quick. Defensive midfielders probably run the most out of any position. Mauro Silva(Brazil), Edgar Davids(Netherlands), and Didier Deschamps, Lothar Matthäus, and Dunga(Ante Kvartuc) come to mind.
Patrick Vieira is the only 6’4″ great defensive midfielder that I know. Dude was a rock for Arsenal for so many years.
We need that Gattuso, pitbull type of player as a DM and I dont see Corluka fitting that description. Vukojevic was nicknamed the Croatian pitbull, dude can run around all game like Ivica Olic, but he commits silly fouls and finds himself out of position all the time.
Corluka is great for long sprints up the flank like a galloping gazelle. However, I dont see him as a player to break up the opposition’s play and cover for the defensive wings when they go into attack.
.
I agree, the way to deal with the defensive deficiencies of the back line is to deploy an offesive back line.
@ ziva & vlad…..agree with you both. allowing in that late goal will hopefully force bilic to make a chance like you are suggesting (srna to right back….illicevic to right mid…..vida to right bench). if the only goal conceded in the two friendlies was that deflected free kick against estonia, bilic might have been content with his d. but i hope the poor sequence at the end of the match that led to the goal might force this change.
@Vlad…..agreed, I rather see Srna at RB and Ilicevic ahead of him at RM, Vida is not a RB, he is a CB.
I agree ziva a game to forget for the fans and the players but not bilic!! It was just a friendly but bilic has to really think about srna playing in the back and take vida out for two reasons 1 vida cant be counted on and second we need more from that right side offensively, all we need from srna is his crosses and that wont be diminished if he plays back.
Also i dont think we need dujmo or vuko shit we don’t have a niko kovac replacement so dont force one just put rakitic and modric in the middle. Also eduardo must start, he has a goal every second match ratio enough said certain players play better with national teams than club. Also im not ready to give up on jelavic until i watch a game where he gets some decent service and plays shitty than fine make the change.
Olic is heading to Munich to meet with his doctor on Monday.
It’s a game to forget and move on. Our best defender and most creative player were out. We have no depth to begin with and when you factor that with the start of the actual competition being 7 days away yesterday’s game and the way we played was not a surprise.
No surprise we have issues with this backline. At times they are serviceble and at other times they panic. I can’t stress this point enough…….if we have two dinamo players starting for us, we are in trouble. Simunic (at this stage in his career) and Vida can not be counted on during the Euros. Because they play in the HNL they have not played a meaningful match in months. I just don’t see how playing zero quality matches prepares them for elite competition like the Euros.
Everything at this point now focuses on the Ireland and hopefully a win. If that happens anything is possible. Lets hope none of these three guys gets hurt: Modric, Corluka and Pletikosa. Last thing anyone wants to see is their replacements on the field.
Kranjcar would be a great football player ( wide receiver ) he would be excellent if the QB called the statue of liberty play see him fucking just planted during that corner kick whare the hell are his soccer skills fucking guraj se in the box during a corner no? Im ashamed -U-
@ mainzfeldski…..wow! when it rains, it pours for the english. i can hear the excuses being prepared already! no rooney (for 2 matches), no barry, no lampard, no cahill. i won’t shed a tear if they fall apart (but i might have to change my fantasy picks…..i have them finishing 2nd in the group)
Cahill is out!
http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/newsid=1805988.html#england+lose+defender+cahill+broken
i think eduardo should play a role in the first match…but he should not play the entire 90min…it is too risky for a injury prone player who is not match fit too..He offers something which other strikers dont…
As for the striking partner, I have no objections as to who will start….be it jelavic mandzukic olic…None of them is indipensable..
walking out of oslo healthy is most important. adding corluka to CB and modric to CM will make a big difference. also, let’s hope srna is ready to focus on his game rather than arguing with the opposition and refs…..i agree with those who thought his play/antics were ridiculous. friendly or not, he acted like a douche. that stupid kick he gave the norwegian player (where he earned a yellow) was moronic. a trigger happy ref could give him a red for something like that (if the ref had grown tired of watching srna’s antics all match). our captain needs to be smarter than that.
good news about olic…..some might bash him on here but we need him out there, even if its only for 20-30 mins at the end of the game when the opposition’s D is tired. he scored many a goal like that.
@golden child – i have been harping on that eduardo point before. this will be his first chance at a big tourney and he deserves it, based upon how well he played in 08 qualifying (up until the injury of course) and how he has played pretty well in these 2 friendlies. it doesn’t seem like bilic will start him against ireland but if he listens to us on here, it looks like he should start!!
Eduardo should start
Does anyone know if Ilicevic is naturally right or left footed? He seems pretty good with both.
Major over reaction going on to this game. It was just a friendly, I’m sure most of the guys were half assing it,includin srna.
@AZ,
You go with players that are in form, jelavic is in great form, out top three strikers without a doubt are super mario, jelavic, and eduardo. The first two being in the best form, but eduardo is the most technically skilled and versatile striker, which in my book makes him a must start.
Seriously I have no idea why many people give jelavic the thumbs up for the starting 11 role, based on his performance in everton….What has he contributed to NT? Time and time again, he is given several chances to shine, but has not shined in any matches…He also played poorly against georgia in 1st half and got subbed off at half time..
I personally think the team style of play does not suit jelavic..hope i am wrong though…
For me in this euro 2012, my strikers ahead of jelavic are eduardo (1st choice), olic (2nd choice)…If i have choice, i would go for petric, klasnic, mandzukic, kalinic and lastly jelavic…because all of them have proven in NT..
Unless jelavic can prove to NT in recent friendlies he is important to the team
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but this would be Eduardo’s first big tournament for the repka. I know everyone is jumping on his nuts, but he’d be a great pair with Jelavic.
I’d like to publicly apologize to Jure i Boban….
If Srna keeps playing this way, I’d rather have Vida and Illicevic handle the right than Srna anyway. He was an embarrassment.
I found this on some attempts and the goals, I was training today so I missed the game. Keep in mind, this is a FRIENDLY.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDEQD2HsH6g
Also, Portugal lost 3-1 against Turkey.
Tomorrow will be interesting because Spain plays China.
What’s funny is you guys get so worked up over this. The most important thing is that NON of our boys got injured. I know that Olic took a knock but I don’t think it’s serious.
Srna;s antics were a disgrace today, the captain of the NT should not be diving and moaning at the referee all game
@Denis:
I agree, we don’t have central midfielders that are natural ball winners including Modric. What do you think about Corluka playing as our defensive midfielder?
That goal was a joke. We lost to the Greeks in a similar manner. We let a Greek skulleted midget have an open header and we let this Norwegian do the same at the back post. At least Modric would have been at the back post (most likely).
todays game has just put me in a sad state. i was disappointed with the play all day long, especially cause i couldn’t notice jelavic or perisic were on the field (who i had high hopes for) , but i could’ve walked away feeling decently good with a 1-0 victory thinking you don’t always play well, we didn’t have two of our better players, we were away, and the players were probably playing with some restraint. but to have the game won and give that last minute goal leaves such a bad taste even if its just a friendly. it worries me that the mental focus that is going to need to be there to compensate for our weak back line, just isn’t there. hope i’m wrong
Im happy they played liked shit. Now go out and correct those mistakes, or glitches that we had. Having said that, its only a friendly Im not overly concerned on todays game. We never show up for the lighter teams.
@ Dennis, I agree with you 100% on our forwards. Im afraid that we might have some difficulties putting the ball in the back of the net. Even with our weak backline we need to produce a lot of offence to take the pressure off the defence. I see us conceding goals in every group game and therefore need the offence to klick and play defence responsibly.
Im a big Stipe basher but will give the man props on his performance today
Vida will do well….stop all the hate!
Hi everyone,
this is so seriously when midfilder get stuck for their performance. obviously deffense so hard to do to keep their line. and like Simunic pranjic pletikosa. . so suck with their anticipate. get true for starting line up especially in midfilder.
@ Mihovil,
Yes. That or ScubaSrna.
@ Igra,
Correct!!
With the Olympics coming up, Croatia can sure use Srna on the diving team.
Seriously though, I’m worried if he keeps it up he will be booked for simulation in the tourney.
@ Ante Kvartuč
“Srna needed a snorkel for how much swimming he did against Norway.”
Should we now refer to Dario as Dario Srnork?
GO KINGS GO!!
Easy everybody. Nobody is showing their cards one week before the tourney. Portugal lose to Turkey. We half ass past Norway. England 1-0 over The Belgian Waffles. Spain is playing China??? Mahhh daj!
Don’t take this too seriously. Our boys will show up next week. Srna needed a snorkel for how much swimming he did against Norway.
Now let’s focus our energy on the Kings winning game 2 vs the Devils. Hey NY Hrvati, you guys have been quiet since the Rangers lost. Whats up?
Corluka will be our most important player this June!
He’s the only quality we have on the back line, and he seems to be a real leader lately.
The last two games hes scored in (Turkey@Istanbul, Estonia@Pula) were easily our best games in the last 8-10 months.
He went out early in that Sweden game recently and they totally dominated us too.
Fuck I never thought I’d miss Lovren so much.
And I don’t even like Lovren!
He totally needs to develope that potential already!
Everyone is quick to bash our thin backline, but I don’t see our offense clicking at all. If we lose 2-0, don’t blame our defense, blame our offense. total ball possession. midfielders coming back for support. Midfielders disrupting the opposition’s attack.
Our midfielders are great offensively, but defensively we have a problem.
I hope Jelavic isnt just another good club player..who doe’s nothing for the national team!
@ Igra i know such a mess of a game the time zone in norway day time all day th pitch was not good at all for both teams, and in the end of the day Bilic still has not learned Jelavic Eduardo up front Olic off bench thats it. and i hope sveti Ante blesses our back 4 plu Stipe. Kranjcar one more time that is why he is the bigget flop in craotian football
@ Siroki: You are so right! What the hell the Kranjcar just doing there standing through out the play. He didn’t cover the back post. He didn’t pick up Elyounossi, the scorer. Niko was responsible for that goal.
Wasn’t impressed with Simunic’s attempted back pass which led to a series of corners resulting in a goal.
@ Quentin Jelavic hasnt had good service into the 16m box at all so cannot judge him and no chemistry at this point we are limited team if one or two players are down we are not good Bilic needs to work on the back 4.
Also do you guys think Stipe Should have done better for that goal like came out and boxed it away?
And i would bench kranjcar for that shit just standing there fucken DEBELINA CICO JR
@Toronto Croatia
I feel that jelavic has done very well but ive never seen a performance hes put on in a Croatian jersey? what do u think?
I would take Eduardo over Mandzu based upon what I’ve seen recently.
Even after his injury, he still has that uncanny ability to position himself in the box and poach a goal. A fox in the box so to speak. Mandzu works hard, but we need players that can convert their chances.
Wouldn’t worry about the Norway game too much. Croatia wasn’t giving a 100%. This is the penultimate game before the Euros and no one wanted to get hurt. This was a light match, which was more of an experiment for Bilic to try out different tactics and players. If they lost 3-0 like Italy did, then I’d start to worry.
Stipe Pletikosa: Vrlo siguran u prvom poluvremenu.
U 20. minuti ostavio samog Braatena, no uspio blokirati njegov udarac, a pri izjednačujućem golu “asistirao” Elyounoussiju.
Ivan Perišić (do 63. minute): U prvom dijelu utakmice u nekoliko navrata prošao po lijevoj strani terena i ubacio upotrebljive lopte u kazneni prostor.
One of my buddie sent me a text ahah
Eduardo mora igrat ili neka ga uopće ne vodi. Najbolji naš igrač. Samo naravno otkad se zamjerio Zdravku odmah je preselio na klupu. E moj Slavene kolko ti je puta Dudu spasio dupe
He is one of our best strikers…..that is true, that’s also like saying the 250 lbs chick is good looking compared to standing next to three chicks who are over 325 lbs.
The Brazilian-bron Hrvat is more skillful than the other forwards, so I would be in favor of him getting PT.
Bolan reka boanac We are not good we need to open our eyes and look at it that way its not just this game it the lat 4 years we have played like crap mega crap ultra crap, i bothers me that Srna cannot stay on his feet Risse was laughing at him and his disgusting dives Asshole.
No matter all you rasisti hrvat and herceg hate eduardo He always shows up for Croatia game and his techical abilitiy is great. Good job stipe looked good not at fault for goal, i reallly dont know all i know is Lovren will be missed no matter how peolpe bash him. Mandzukic and Jelavic attack is a no no, for me EDUARDO ALVES DUDU DA SILVIC !
Yes, thats a great statement Ziva…..he is not the same player since his leg was practically amputated by a vicious tackle.
The point is, he is still one of our best strikers.
Olic & Modric Update
http://tinyurl.com/7t6n8t8
some good news…. or bad news if you are not an Olic fan…
“Obavit ćemo sve dodatne kontrole, ali prema sadašnjim saznanjima, Olić bi trebao biti spreman za Irsku. Vidjet ćemo sutra nakon detaljnjih pretraga”
“We’ll do all the extra analysis, but at present, Olic should be ready for Ireland. We’ll see tomorrow after a detailed analysis(of the injury).”
~Croatian team doctor, Jurica Rakic
@Ziva
So do u start eduardo or not? I don’t care what u base it on what decision would u make come ireland?
I agree with you our backline looks much better with lovren in it. That back line will be our biggest handicap, nice to see pletikosa make some good saves.
I still stand by what I said about the Brazilian-born Hrvat. He is not the same player anymore. I don’t think anyone will dispute that.
However, I will also go by what I constantly preach……I can only judge players based on what I see from them. If we are to base the starters just on these two friendlies, then the Brazilian-born Hrvat should get the starting nod up front with Jelavic (assuming he is the other starter).
Lovren being out is going to be the biggest handicap for us because either Vida or Simunic will get minutes. Neither deserve to start.
Ziva, what is it you were telling me about Eduardo?
As I’ve said….Eduardo and Jelavic are our best strikers.
Heck now it seems Eduardo even moreso. Jelavic is a great striker but he hasn’t really ever performed for our national team yet.
I’m HOPING on the big stage Jelavic will start to light it up.
Sure the game could have been better but lets keep in mind, we didn’t want anyone going out there and killing themselves for a friendly.
And for the guys earlier talking about a scenerio of throwing bananas on the field at Balotelli. Yea great idea morons, lets make all Croatians look like backwards racists.
When you wear your Croatia Jersey during this tournament, you want to wear it with pride….not with having to defend your people for being accussed of being “a bunch of racists”
Lets hope nothing stupid like that happens during the tournament and anyone doing it would make us all look bad.
@ AllenOutraged
Great post Allen!!!!!!! I am with you on the Srna not being a good captain initiative. That was embarrassing today and it was not the first time. He flops way too much for someone that wears the armband.
I would give the armband to Corluka after the tournament. This guy leads by example and for all intensive purposes it was his MVP performance in the first game against Turkey that got us here in the first place!
Corluka takes a back step to nobody and shows great character on the pitch. Prior to the Olic goal against Germany in Euro 2008 @ the 60 minute mark Podoliski is tugging on Corluka’s shirt on the sideline and Corluka is not facing him but protecting the ball. As the rat keeps tugging on Corluka’s jersey Charlie cannot take anymore and he turns around as to say buddy not today! The look he gives Podolski when he turns around to face him is just awesome. Podolski takes a quick two step back because he knows what is coming next if he does not watch his next step. When Charlie wore the armband against Estonia because Srna sat, it shows that the coaching staff think of him as captain material as well.
Vida is not a RB as he is a liability going forward and his coverage is suspect. He is more of a CB but someone should really try to make him our next CDM during the WC 2014 qualifiers. The guy is an animal and does not stop!
Eduardo and Jelavic up top please for the next game and it was quite evident today how much we missed not having Corluka and Modric in the lineup! Massive!
Ireland you are going down! One way or the other!
🙂
@Ziva,
who do we start brazilian born hrvat or mandzukic?
@Mickey……..do yourself a favor and never pay attention to what coaches or players have to say in press conferences before and after games. 90% of the time what is said is politically correct nonsense. What would you want Bilic to say??? We are here to play a match, screw around, hopefully not get hurt and hope that Corluka doesn’t pick up a STD with one of his female conquests from the night before??
This team is what it is……..good enough to qualify for a major tournament and with a few breaks maybe make a decent run. We are also prone to going three and out. We had two dinamo players in today’s starting line up…..I’m not ripping Dinamo, I’m ripping the league. We saw what they did against Europe’s elite this year, what makes you think players like Vida or Simunic are ready to play at the Euro Cup stage.
don’t get why bilic is so stubborn with the 4-4-2 with our defence just plug the midfield we dont have a team for 4-4-2,
Its only a friendly so lets not get to panicked, with the magician in our offense will open up, i would say start jelavic and brazillian born hrvat, mandzukic seems like he has a tough time with ball and can’t play outside the box, eduardo is a finisher and creator, I think we gotta start him. Anyone else see jelavic completely miss that ball in front of goal?
Very poor showing!
But its what we have come to expect from this inconsistent bunch, havent we. Even though this was a practice match, it would’ve been nice to see more urgency, awareness and fluency before the big dance.
It was hard to watch, and naturally there are concerns if this bad form will continue in the euros.
The bright side is, modric to be included in the line-up and pletikosa looked sharp. Hopefully he(pleti) can replicate a similar performance he had last time around when they played poorly against austria, which kept us in it.
Also lets hope bilic gets the formation right, now that he knows what doesnt work.
Dujmovic and Vukojevic do not and have never played defensive midfield in a proper way. Leave them both out. Go with the most technical team you have. This should be our starting lineup, without doubt.
Pletikosa,- Srna, Pranjic, Corluka, Schindenfeld, – Perisic, Rakitic, Modric, Kranjcar, – Jelavic, Eduardo.
We cannot bunker anyway – this lineup makes you go for it.
I agree with the friendly being meaningless and in most other situations would scoff at the result or way we played. But again, if you read Bilic’s comments prior to the game, he was putting a greater emphasis on this game because it was supposedly an opponent which comes close to playing the way Ireland plays. Therefore, it was important for us to come out and play a “real” game. Perhaps, we are hiding our cards a bit for next week but I think though Bilic is smart he’s not that smart. Therefore, this could be the way we play in the tournament.
I tend to look at from the point of view of okay……what are we like when we are at our best and when we are at our worst……and in what situations have we risen to that level and when have we not. The evidence is clear, we rise against teams the general public believes are better than us and we fall vs teams that are below and we tend to be 50/50 or maybe 40/60 vs teams that are about even with us. So if we take that evidence and look at the current form of our team, I think we are in for a rude beginning vs Ireland who, mark my word, are gonna come out playing 110% from minute 1 to 90 cuz they have something to prove in a major tournament esp after the france debacle. Realistically, we can hope that all 4 teams draw in the 1st game which would then give us better odds to advance again judging by how we tend to step up vs better competition.
The defense looked panicked at times; they lack that stability of years past. Plus we gave up a stupid goal in injury time – – we make mental mistakes. I still think that goal Turkey scored in the 119th minute at Euro 2008 was due to mental lapses, rather than any Turkish resilience. Poor time management, poor marking.
Any word on Olic?
I laughed so hard at Kranjcar standing like a statue on the other post. He did not seem to budge one bit. Allen19 doesn’t approve of this!
@Ante B….i would join them.
Vida is not ready for prime time. We have two HNL players in our backline. That just speaks volumes how bad our D is. Having Corluka back there helps and having Modric in the middle opens up the wings. Corluka should take the spot of Simunic or Vida. Pick you poison which HNL all-star you want in there.
Not an encouraging game, but we have seen this before by many other teams. Half-assing it in the friendlies and then waking up and showing up when it matters. Only question is if our team can do that. We get to find out in 8 days.
I think this was more of a practice game. No need to worry. But Jelavic and Eduardo should definitely start.
I am an actor and in theatre we often say that a bad rehearsal means that the real performance will be great. I find it often true.
we had the same issue in 08…the game before the euros we tied and had a bad performance…I remember Niko Kovac saying afterwards not to worry and the real Croatia will be at the euros.
I’m not worried yet…I’ll be worried if we lose against Ireland.
Bilic said the result was inc inconsequential compared to the plan on how we were going to play this game which was supposed to have been aggressive, bold and fast………none of which we showed today which alarms me. Yes…missing our best player makes a big difference but if that is what our hopes are riding on, we are going to be sorely disappointed once again. I saw noone else step up aside from Pletikosa and Eduardo when he came on. I try to be optimistic but the proof is in the pudding. Aside from the 1st Turkey game, how many times can anyone say we played like a team capable of being a top 5 team?
As bad as this game was, our weaknesses in this game should be fixed just by starting Corluka and Modric.
Rakitic was ineffective in Modric’s place, and by replacing Simunic with Corluka we will have significant upgrade in stability back there.
I was never pro-Eduardo as a starter, but I think replacing Mandzo with Eduardo in that starting lineup with be another plus for this squad.
But just the Modric and Corluka change above would be huge for us.
Perisic adds some pace, Rakitic has done very little for us over the years. As much as Kranjcar gets slagged on by most, he has still been more productive for the National team than Rakitic has.
That was absolute garbage!! you can change the line up all you want…NO ORGANIZATION at all.Simunic is done!!! Italy looked ok in the early stages yesterday. We are LUCKY to have a draw today. We looked hopeless…
Let’s hope this was all about a light run around, as opposed to going 100%. Regardless, the running, passing and general play was crap. It improved a bit with the addition of Dudu and Niko. Where was Modric? Rumor has it he was meeting with his manager/potential suitors………….which if true, is BS. I expect more against Ireland.
BTW, there is no way Kelava our Suba can play ahead of Stipe, at least we know that.
I just don’t see this team winning a game in our group……..slow and ineffective ball movement, very slow defense which is prone to make unforced errors, inability to make in-game strategy changes from our coaching staff. Our best player BY FAR today was our keeper. He’ll have to stand on his head for us to have any shot out of our group.
I’m not going to be a jackass and be happy about Olic’s injury. I may not like him very much as player, but I want him to make the tournament at least. This is his last tournament ever probably and it would have been cool for him to see experience. Hopefully its nothing major because he could play a role in the Euros for Croatia even though Eduardo-Jelavic should really be the starters even though knowing Billc it will be Manzo.
I didn’t really catch the friendly only glimpses and pieces. Other than Olic, nobody got injured so that’s a plus. The main thing was to get out healthy at least. That being said, do you guys think Srna is the worst Croatian captain ever? Absolute joke at captain, its amazing how things changed. I thought he was the perfect guy in 2008 to take Kovac’s spot but boy did that end fast.
for me vida was okay…i don’t mind him back there.
Simunic scares me
Mandzo and olic must come off the bench…they are just ridiculous!
@ivica
perisic didn’t show anything today, so why exactly MUST he start? ill take rakitic over him and make him come off the bench.
@ Rob in T.O.
You nailed it right on the button with that lineup.
This was a bad friendly, but it had some takeaways for Bilic to ponder about:
1. Simunic should not set foot on the field the entire tournament. Corluka must start in the CB position.
2. Mandzo, when paired with Jelavic, is redundant and provides nothing we don’t already have with Jelavic up front. Trying out a more creative Eduardo up front with Jelavic would be better, with workhorse Olic as a sub. Mandzo should be our 4th striker.
3. Try and sort out that right side with Srna and Vida. Vida needs to stay back. I still like Ilicevic off the bench though in case we need some juice, if our flanks go stale.
4. Perisic must start on the Left side. Looks like Rakitic heads to the bench for the tournament.
okay it wasn’t just the back four. when will people realize we don’t have anyone better to put back there. with lovren out and corluka not playing today that is the best we got. going forward we were shit too.
@Josip B
Good eye. It’s not just the goal, though. I see this happening many times during the second half, which allows Norway to spread out and extend their dominance on all sides of the pitch.
our defense looks bad no matter who plays i know its a friendly but i dunno doesn’t look good!! eduardo nice goal ,nice cross by srna, still would like to have seen srna play at least a bit at right back, vida looked a little suspect but at the same time no one played well!!
@DinamoDennis,
Agreed whole-heartedly. That is why this is an average side.
In all honesty, I wouldn’t be that surprised if Ireland takes second place, they are fully capable of taking points off of Italy and Croatia.
kranjcar needs to start, form or no form he needs to start. eduardo is a definite starter, perisic needs to come in off the bench, vida is embarrassing, mandzukic is a joke,
Who was that standing about 5 feet from the Norwegian goal scorer on that corner? Kranjcar? He wasn’t marking anyone (with the guy that scored wide open), and stood there like a statue when they took the corner!
a sign of a good team is when they pull out wins even with a poor showing…….that’s why this upsets me.
I think Simunic is done….last good game was against turky…
Vida is an inexperienced player, to put it kindly. Thank god this was a friendly and thank god for Eduardo. Norway was the better team today, without a doubt…
wow. what an awful game for croatia. i hope this was them taking it easy and amply not looking to get hurt. between some stupid plays (pranjic, corner kick give aways), croatians getting hurt ( mandzukic, rakitic, olic), srna flopping everywhere, and absolutely nothing created on offense (did they even have a corner kick!?), this was just awful. hope its not a sign of what is to come
very frustrating
that was disappointing, some terrible touches and sloppy play at the end, definitely need some changes in the lineup for our opener
That was pathetic. -U-
Pitiful….giving up consistent goals in injury time is a sure ticket to land your ass on the couch at home.
vs Turkey, vs Georgia, disgusting….
sloppy d costs the victory. corners given away by simunic and vida in that sequence led to the goal. oh well….maybe conceding that late will help bilic take a closer look at those back 4
When our defense concedes two corners in a row by accident, something must be wrong, and look… Norway scores.
that was retarded
That guy has nice hair
If we insist on 4-4-2 (which I’m sure Bilic will), just go with the following and be done with it:
Jelavic
Eduardo
Perisic Dujmovic Modric Srna (or Ilicevic)
Strinic Schildenfeld Corluka Vida (or Srna)
Pletikosa
Out of our current options, this is the best that we can field at the moment, IMHO.
I agree rob… i think jelavic and eduardo are a must
x3, start Eduardo, fuck Mandzukic.
He has the technique, class and nose for goal…JUST PLAY HIM, fitness be damned!
Too bad we didn’t give Eduardo and Jelavic a trot out together.
Nice cross by Srna
Bravo Eduardo -U-
Eduardo starts. No more question about it. 🙂
srna finally did something today….bravo!
That’s why you start Eduardo.
eduardo!!!!
Great goal! Well done vida srna and dudu!!!!
God forbid Croatia attempts to drive down the wings or win a 50/50 ball
Olic out Ilicevic in
haha and he’s only been on for a few min…and hasnt touched the ball…
olic leaves for treatment to the dressing room
Finaly!
Dudu in Mandzo out
Kranjcar in Perisic out
Finally..
whats with all the long inaccurate passes
oh boy pranjic…….wtf?
Oh Pranjic….
Srna…calm down.
holly crap here comes the hustle from the hrvati
Its just a friendly people. Lets not throw the tele out the window just yet. Pletikosa looking sharp in goal. We are in trouble if pleti goes down.
As far as waterpolo………
Ante B and Fisto were heard loud and clear. I even saw the water polo players crack a smile during a couple of the chants. I was tempted to go up in the stands. We will post pictures, videos, and summary in the next 48 hours.
Major props to Ante B and Fisto along with the others in their group.
Srna’s dives make me want to puke!
Olic in…jelavic out… i think
Vuko in Dumoj out
Pranjic in strinic out
Strinic and Vida both never learned how to pass the ball. Mandzukic is useless unless it’s a cross to his head five yards from the net. No way he should start in front of Eduardo, who is now a better creator/passer than goalscorer. Poor Rakitic is the only one trying to create something. Need more from Perisic.
Gotta take Manzo out and some others…take your pick who…throw in Kranjcar, ilicevic eduardo…mabye even badelj later on
Very disheartining first half I really fucking hope we dont play like this next week or were getting SMOKED -U-
Dosent matter that it’s just a friendly that was bad really bad!!
Theres zero play down the right side no one on one play with srna, the defense looks terrible, i know its just a friendly but that was really bad! pletikosa is playing well!! corluka and modric is missed. all our play is on the left side i would put illecivic in second half eduardo and corluka.
hahahhahah me to! I was hoping he didn’t get up!
Yea, not much of anything happening really…nice save by stipe…highlight of the half
Also…is Rakitic playing in the middle in place of Modric?
Why didn’t Bilic just go with Kranjcar instead? Kranjcar’s a better fit there and we could see how “out of form” he is.
corluka is definitely missed out there.
also, hate seeing our guys roll around on the floor like they have been shot. if it was the tourney and we are trying to get a guy sent off….maybe. but not this friendly. we don’t look sharp out there….they should focus on their passing and not their rolling
I hate to say it, but I was hoping Mandzo was injured (not a serious one) so we can see if Eduardo is good enough up there with Jelavic.
Also…who the hell is playing RB? I know it’s supposed to be Vida, but it looks like the guy is playing further up than Srna. Srna’s barely making any runs, and I don’t tell me it’s due to that so-called great defense being played by that ginger Norwiegan.
Mandzukic’s touches and passes have been disgusting
@ Ivica
I agree…we need corluka in there….and Mandzu makes me sick!
Without modric we are creating nothing
@Dinamo Dennis
Ugh. Norway almost scored. How does Simunic allow a pass like that get made?
I said it before, and I’ll say it again. Simunic and Schildo better not start together as our CB pairing.
Corluka is heavily missed.
Corluka is not starting, its simunic instead

U21’s lost to the Swiss 2-1 and have now been eliminated from the 2013 Euro Cup.
Glavica equalized in the 73′ to make it 1-1. Antolic picked up a red card in the 88′ and then Drmic scored for the Swiss in injury time to take it 2-1.
Adio Mali Vatreni…
Ziva, it didn’t even constitute a full handful. I was under the assumption that once we started singing, the others would join…….wrong assumption. And if they did, I couldn’t hear it over our own voice.
Lemme axe ya diss personally Ziva…if you were to walk onto the stands before the game (they were the metal bleacher kind) where there were Croatian flags and obviously Croatian supporters, would you as a Croatia fan walk towards them and see if you could join them or walk the other way?
Shoutout to the hrvati who attended, but nothing more pathetic than only a handful of people singing. Do it as a large group or don’t do it all. Either way, I am sure they had fun.
espn3.com will have the best feed if you are in the US
Last nights waterpolo game in a nutshell:
-You can tell the Cro team didn’t give too much of a shit. They hit the stativa at least 6 times.
-30 Croatians maybe in the stands; all scattered around, no organization whatsoever.
-4 Croatians outsang hundreds of US fans; it was like Mike Tyson fighting a handicapped person. Imagine if all of us were organized and actually gave a shit in the US dijaspora. All talk, very little action.
-From our Croatian corner, we saw the guys taking cool pictures and some awesome interviews.
Out.
NO Mandzo in the line up period! Just my 2 cents
http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/newsid=1805604.html#all+latest+build+euro
modric tidbit about his status. hopefully, this report is true and he has sat out as a precaution and all will be well. he has played virtually every match for 90mins this year (was he ever subbed off this season?) so i hope this is just “recharging his batteries” so to speak.
Where can I watch the game online or even on tv if I can find somebody with cable?
Links people, links
regardless, not good for the game but still would be funny if someone threw a banana and he blew up. would even be funnier if it came from the wops side;)
Modric not playing not a good sign. would like to see him play at least 45 mins before a tournament.
@ Salinovic

DOES ANYONE HAVE AN INTERNET SITE WHERE I COULD WATCH THE CROATIA VS NORWAY GAME?????
Any place i can watch this game online? >
@Poglavnik…..as is usually the case……often-imitated but rarely replicated.
@Ziva Istina
There’s a new Cirque du Soleil out called “Ziva”
Any relation to your life story 🙂
Post stuff from the waterpolo game
Big Vida fan here too!
He’s very athletic and has a big heart.
Lots of potential there I think.
disagree Vida is a great young player he should def play.
ESPN3 will have it too if you don’t get Desportes or if you like me don’t get Desportes in HD
@Mihovil and Mali – De nada. Figured it’s gotta be better than huddling over a laptop screen watching a choppy feed on the internet in Norwegian.
podemos fingir que somos mexicanos y ver el futbol en espanol!
i agree that we should cheer for an italy loss in their first match. to echo poglavnik’s comment, they might try to chase a victory against us and open up a bit in our game with them if they lose to spain.
as for eduardo, he has skill and would be very interesting to see with jelavic but how effective can he be and how good can his conditioning be? he has barely played this season. not sure if bilic sees him being more effective as a starter playing 60 or so mins or coming on as a sub for 20-30 mins….i would guess bilic will use him as a sub in the first match.
@Colin:
Thanks for the heads up about ESPN.
I’d like to see an Eduardo/Jelavic pairing.
Would remind me of Cahill/Jelavic.
Eduardo is our most technically gifted striker.
Put him beside a big workhorse like Jelavic and watch out!
@Tom
1st half Italy actually looked dangerous. 2nd half was a different story because their subs were in.
Those last two goals were gifts by a second string keeper and a guy not starting on D.
I wouldn’t say they got steamrolled, but there is definitely a number of things Bilic can take from this game.
@Andrej
Game might not mean anything in terms of standings, but it was Italy’s only warm up before Euros.
You should be taking a lot away from the first half, beacuse they had a majority of their
starters playing.
@Poglavnik
Great question. Not too sure yet. I don’t know how the Italians woud react if they won against
Spain. Overjoyed that they beat them, which may lead to a little overcockiness or they could
steamroll us after knowing they’ve just beaten one of the best.
@Siroki
Another great point. Last time a betting scandal hit the Italians in the media, they went on to
make the finals I believe.
Also if Russia actually had their scoring shoes on, this game would have been ugly for Italy.
matchups and chemistry are what matter…I dont think we were better than some of the teams we’ve beat in the past but our spirit and competitiveness attitudes may have pulled us through…at the same time…we’ve lost or tied far less superior teams!
I don’t care how good Spains 2nd team is or if they are better than us because I still would rather play their 2nd team. The problem is if Italy ties or wins(always possible!) than it really makes all 3 games for us crucial! Ireland basically would be a must win for us. This group is so difficult that we basically are in a must win in the first 2 games and a bare minimum of 4 points before we play Spain.
With the competition in the group there will be yellow cards and we will be missing players by the end of the group if we go into stages. Its just a matter of how we are able to cope with it if the case arises.
Worst case scenario is if we lose vs Ireland and Italy beat Spain! It will be almost impossible for me to see us going through but never say never.
Ziva,
That is correct in regards to Eduardo he isn’t that same goal scorer he once was but I simply think he is a better fit for a player like Jelavic up top. He is going to be a unselfish partner who will drop deep and do the work of picking up balls deeper and linking up play better. Whether he can score like he used to is up to him getting a chance again but honestly do you see any of the strikers reading a pass better than Eduardo?
For me its not my dislike for Mandzukic its the fact that with him and Olic on the bench we have two options to bring on for speed and to run at the defensive line in the last 30 minutes if that goal is needed. I think all of our strikers serve a purpose if they are used correctly. I think none of the strikers are top class but they do have a work rare and thats where they make up for there lack of skills in certain areas. Regardless of who is played up top they will score if they are given scoring chances and that is something we have not created to much of consistently for them.
http://sportske.jutarnji.hr/ocajna-generalka-azzura-uoci-eura–rusija-u-zurichu-deklasirala-talijane/1031990/
You guys know spain second team i better than our first spains econd team would have qualifyed for euro without problem.
I think Id prefer an Italy loss too because then they might actually open it up a bit when they play against us.
Also letting Spain get their 6 points from their first 2 games would be great for us.
@ Ziva id take the Hrvatski Zet any day over anyone else regarless.
Also Give Russia credit they play some modern Football Dick Advocaat has done a great job with them wing play counter in 10 second italy countered and missed Russia come down the pitch and score, italy have 2 african american on their team wow.
@poglavnik……I rather have Italy lose. One of the things that could work in our favor is playing Spain third and having Spain win their first two games giving them 6 points and possibily resting players or sitting them against us to avoid yellow card accumulations.
Controversy works in different ways to teams/individuals. Sometimes it can bond a team (Italy 2006 after the scandal), but it can also drive a team into bad performances (France 2010) when the pressure is on. Lets say Italy loses to Spain making their game against us almost a must-win situation. We go up a goal early on and Italy begins to implode sensing the end is near. Balotelli goes nuts and everything falls into place for us.
@Andrej……I agree with much of what you said except for one thing regarding the brazilian-bron hrvat. He is not a proven goal scorer any longer. I can only go by what I see and what I have seen from him in the last two years are injuries. I’d love for him to regain his Dinamo playing form, but I am not expecting it.
Spain win…leaves Italy looking for a win against us regardless of what our result is! That way Spain then goes out and can potentially beat Ireland as well leaving them resting vs us and giving there 2nd team a run out in our 3rd game.
Chiellini dint play and when buffon is not in goal thats not italy, and also these friendlies are jut to get the leg going when the tournament starts anything goes, For croatia look at this, Euro 2004 They beat denmark and look at what happened 2004, 2006 we beat argentina and played well in all our game no luck 2008 we beat a moldovia 1-0 and 1-1 with scotland hungary and got crushed 3-0 by holland,
@ Poglavnik i would like for a draw by those 2 teams
for Italy I want lose lose lose
Here’s a question Hrvati;
Would you rather Italy win lose or draw with Spain in their first game?
Italy game just finished: Russia just whooped on Italy 3-0… Italy has now lost it’s last 3 matches (all friendlies) and had 1 friendly cancelled earlier this week due to the earthquake
@ HAET
I would recommend taking a look at some of these books. It very much helped when I wrote a research paper on “Soccer and Sustainability.” The banana instance is mentioned in Foer.

@Mate yes Balo is the key. We need to rattle him. Did he not get a yellow today for a stupid foul?
3-0 final… Italy showed more creativity than I thought they would before the submania began in the second half. Also Italy seems content to let balotelli do whatever he wants with the ball on the offensive side.
The game meant nothing to the italians, there was more passion in the Paris hilton sex tape than the second half of the game and it showed
Defense with Buffon in goal looked
Organized but susceptible to speed on the wings
Many offsides for Italy, and Russia have a very strong defense with Akinfeev reacting immensely well against many Italian shots on goal.
I laughed when Rai Uno decided to pull up a commercial during the replays on Russia’s first goal. So. Much.
The days fly by!
I don’t get it, I wouldn’t be upset in the least bit if I saw someone acting like a monkey (it’d be funny), why would Balotelli? Can someone please explain this to me?
@Maki
Balotelli is such a thug ugly loser.
This Italy vs Russia friendly means nothing! More players are looking to avoid injury than they are looking to win the game with 1 week till the Euros nobody wants to miss out. Can’t take much away from this besides it was another friendly. Italy didn’t look awesome but Russia looked good but when it comes down to the tournament its a completely different competition.
Italy look awful but thats because russia are playing well?
If you guy dont live in croatia bet way if your at work or the game i not on HRT radio the commentor are great i love listening to games on the radio when at work.
Also balotelli said if fan do moinkey noises he will injure an key player for the other team.
Guys Italy looks awful. They had some nice plays today but never connected. Spain will eat them alive and Croatia needs to take it to them for the win. We can do it!!!!!
Again, can someone please explain to me how throwing bananas at Balotelli is “raaaciss”?
“Murder”? over name calling and banans??? LOL! yeah okay, and he thinks he’s got a right to live in a White country and chase White women?
Just saw this from @GoalUK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=c_ut5S1c77Y
Yes Russia Scores!!!!!!
The Croats in the stands should sing the Day O song.
@HAET he said something like he would murder someone if they threw bananas at him or said racist things and that he would walk straight off the pitch immediately
Hey I would wear a Bannna suit in the stands if it means getting him off his game.
Why would throwing bananas at Balotelli be “raaaciss”? Can someone please explain that to me?
That NYT article is about trying to soften us up, get us to read our own press-clippings. The war hasn’t even started, and you are getting all giddy cuz some english guy “wrote nice things about us”.
hey Tom,
i’m more worried that our fans will start throwing bananas at Balotelli lol
goran prpic
Guys this is off topic but is anyone worried by far right violence against Croats over there. I don’t think Poland would be an issue but I am not Sure about the UKR.
Yahoo uk has a livecast thing.
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/international-friendlies/2012/italy-russia-502899.html
if I was in the stands I would throw bananas at Balotelli to try and set him off (I am not racist at all, just trying to get him to red card himself lol)… and I would be throwing money at Bonucci and Buffon and whomever else comes out next in the betting/fixing scandal!
@Mihovil we need to upset him a little. Drag out that temper. Maybe some bumping and yo mama jokes.
@ TheGoldenChild
“Pirlo + Balotelli connection is a scary thought. Almost scored from a ball he played from half over the defense.”
Pirlo is always going to look for that outlet when given. We need to be ready for that!
@ Colin O’Haravić
Cuatro cervezas por favor!
@ Tom
He’s an animal out there and he is very hard to cover.
Balotelli worries me. We need to rattle him.
Hope everyone has been brushing up on their espanol. The match against Norway tomorrow will be on ESPNDeportes live and in HD!
Russia is putting on that high pressure, which the Italians are doing so so against it. They are getting chances when they break that high pressure though. Pirlo + Balotelli connection is a scary thought. Almost scored from a ball he played from half over the defense.
Roman Shirokov with the post shot.
@ TheGoldenChild
Thank you sir!
If you guys care to check out the competition, Italy is playing Russia.

@ Nepoznat
Thank you for the New York Times article!
Favorite part of that NY times article
“When you are born, the first thing your father gives you is a football,” Corluka said. “It’s in our blood.
Modric will drop deeper and play deeper naturally probably even deeper than Dujmovic or the other holding player. He will make runs forward but he will always be a deep lying player.
This same thing applies to Eduardo who is almost a supporting striker who will drop into midfield and pick the ball up in wide areas as well and make runs.
To me it makes no sense to play a formation that will not be balanced as we did the 433 vs Georgia with Rakitic, Modric, and Kranjcar and during the game you noticed all 3 vs moving central and similar positions.
Have you ever watched Rakitic play on the right? I don’t see why in the world you would want a player who never crosses the ball or makes runs to be your wide player and out right his biggest strength is taken away and thats his shot. He has the ability to shoot but out right he is forced to cut left to his weaker foot and he will never be as good of an option as Ilicevic would be. Its not that Rakitic isn’t the better player but for that position it would make no sense to play Rakitic as he wouldn’t be as good as Ilicevic.
Not this media outlet…
You know why? Because it’s not news. They’ll give Modric an IV drip, clean up his system and he’ll be fine by Tuesday.
He does not need to play against Norway. Let’s not panic now boys and girls. He had a loooooooooooooooong season in north London.
With those players selected the only formation is a 442 whether you want to think it is a 4132 or a 4312 ect…its really just a 442.
I like the 442 vs weaker sides you can afford to have a balanced attack and take a midfielder out to play the extra striker. I am not calling Norway weak but simply they are a team that will not kill us with speed so its a team you can play a balanced attack in.
I still think Bilic should give a 4231 a shot because we all know that is what we will be using vs Italy and Spain without a doubt. 442 vs Ireland…unless Bilic wants to be a little more cautious.
I personally just am not a fan of Mandzukic starting over Eduardo. I don’t see any part of Mandzukics game that is better than Dudu. Eduardo has a goal scoring track record for the NT…the end! Proven and still to this day is our best striker! He may not be the player he was but he is still the most techincally gifted forward we have and he will make the runs Modric can pick out better than any of the other strikers.
If he does play the firendly no more than 20 minutes please.
If Modric feels alright he will play if not he will be kept on bench as a precaution. He is feeling ill thats all and who the efff knows whats going on because we all know how all the media is that they love to make a story out of nothing…
Why call it a 4132 when its a 442…haha
Luka isn’t hurt he just has a virus…
well my Croatian stinks but from what I picked up from Mihovil’s article is that they are holding him out of training today as a precaution. he isn’t in the best of shape after Spurs season, and medical staff believes it doesn’t appear to be a virus
WTF Luka is hurt?
@Nepoznat
Fantastic article by the NYT. Just read that this morning.
@Mihovil that sucks about Luka… Fucking Loserham Cold Spurs! Let’s hope it really isn’t serious
As for your second link, here is the original article:

Jarac,
I called the director yesterday and she said its sold out. I would think there might be some standing room tickets but I’m not sure. If I was you, I’d go just to try. The only thing that sucks is that the traffic might be bad depending where you live. I’ll be flying in at 4 and heading straight to the game to set up. Even if it’s only for me.
Zbog “lošijeg općeg stanja” Modrić će propustiti trening

@Bosanci
Who cares about Bosna, this is Cro sports.
@Ante B.,
U think people will be selling tickets at the gates?
Ah, I erred in saying that “both Modric & Rakitic started in Central Midfield with Peresic & Srna on the wings” – against Estonia; it was against that 4th div Austrian side – as reported by Croatain Sports in English (the language that 99% of all CS articles are written in) under the headline ‘Bilic names starting 11 for Ireland?’
What of the other questions I asked in that post at 11:58am, 5-21-12′?
And what’s the hang up some of you have with talking about the Spain game? I’m sure Bilic has all sorts of contingency plans ironed out for that game.
Would be funny if Italy pulled out. I guess UEFA could replace them with Estonia who finished 2nd in Italy’s EURO Qualifying group ahead of the Serbs! Would never happen but would be funny.
Piss, just play attacking versus Spain, don’t sit back. This squad would never be able to absorb all their pressure anyhow. No one would expect a result against the mighty Spainards so just go out and play.
Remember what the Swiss did to Spain in their opening group game of South Africa WC 2010. Anything can happen
Kung Fu Pandza!
So far my ‘2012 Smotan of the Year’ goes to Stojan Vranjes of BiH.
Did any of you guys see him completely shank a clear-out attmept and then attempted bicycle kick, which he also shanked, that led to the Mexico goal for their friendly in Chicago?!
Then the great Boris Pandza was apparently daydreaming and let Chicharito set in front of him and tap it in for an easy goal

I was reading some of the Italian websites this morning and to me it Prandelli said that out of frustration. I doubt Italy would pull out unless the italian federation is aware of some news that is really damaging.
Remember the last time they had this around them, Italy went on to win the World Cup. So, anything can ahppen once the get on the field.
Heck, what is even worse, within the croatian federation we still have individuals involved who have been involved in fixed matches in Croatia. Croatia is a small fish in the international soccer community, so nobody cares.
Insanity Mate! The excuses are beginning early from my Italian friends and family
Does anyone have any info on what the hell is going on with the italian camp, all the info coming out has been cryptic at best, and now theres reports of prandelli saying italy could pull out of the euros for “the good of the game”

as well as buffon being implicated in a betting scandal???
does anyone have a link for a replay of the croatia-estonia game?

Modric will go to the L.A. Galaxy
Lanpards out does that mean Chelsea is gonna want modric even more now
we will crush spain and kick them out of the tournament
don’t mind the line up but in the end i think bilic will change nothing, i think his mind is made up for the first game and it will be
pletikosa
vida corluka simunic if healthy strinic
srna dujmo modric rakitic
jelavic mandzo
i don’t like it, if this is the way he goes then i predict bad things!!
My fat ass will be at the game. Anybody else from this site? Tickets are sold out.
Frank Lampard out of the EUROs! Feel very sorry for him.

@dukic it’s a friendly we should save him for the real thing. Smotan
@ Dukic
It’s a friendly, in regards to Vukojevic.
I know its a friendly but I think its huge that our team puts up a shutout against Norway just to boost our confidence a bit. For f-sake we couldnt keep a clean sheet against the Estonians on our own turf. Was it just me or did Estonia look dangerous and have some really good looks in and around our box. Any team in the tournament would bury 1 or 2 of those chances and we need to really tighten things up in the last 30 yards on our end. Seems like teams are having way too much time to dictate what they wanna do. I’ll say it again, Niko Kovac, why cant you be 10 years younger?
i would rather do a 4-3-1-2 so we can have niko playing his natural position behind strikers.
Any bosanci i hercegovci going to the mexico game v BIH in Chicago
@dukic shut up
@Ziva,
I was thinking were lucky to get about 10 people, but 50, man u set the standard high, haha. And I’m not being sarcastic.
@ Ziva
Last time Croatia came to play water polo in southern cal we loaded up the stands buddy. We won in the final against serbia in 07. It was a festa we had a drummer an accordion player the whole 9 yards. We were deep and so were the serbs but it was a great feeling celebrating in front of them. Just youtube JWC 2007 water polo: croatia vs serbia
@ Ziva i agree about eduardo but he did get them to 2008 o he deserves to be on bench the the staring 11 is Russian Pletikosa Vida Scifo Carli Strnic “Uzeir” Srna Dujmovic Lukica Modric Perisic Mandzukic Jelavic, subs Eduardo Kranjcar Rakitic Ilicevic
@Toronto…….the brazilian-born hrvat has not proven anything since his injury. I hope he can, but there is nothing in the last year based on his performance on the field that indicates we can rely on him for big minutes this tourney. The brazilian-born hrvat appears to be broken down.
@Jarac……it would be an accomplishment if you guys can get more than 50 hrvati in the stands for that game.
I dont agree with bunkering either.
Look at that line-up. Clearly our defence/goalies are the weakest part of our team.
Our midfield and forwards are the strongest part of our team.
We need to PUSH our positives and in order to take the pressure off of our negatives.
We can’t sit back in this tournament…if we dont push FORWARD and apply pressure up front, we aren’t going to go anywhere.
Luckily I’m confident that our forwards like Jelavic, Eduardo, and Olic have PROVEN that they can score on a world class goalies.
@HAET………I am beginning to wonder if you can read croatian. Srna and Modric did not dress for the Estonia game. Don’t know what you read to make you think that they even played. Hopefully there is a croatian language school near you.
Too much focus on the Spain game right now by some of you. Long time before that game is played, plus the first two results and yellow cards will have a large role in determining what we do for that game.
Plus, the Spainards have their own issues. They play Italy in game 1 and Spain has not beaten Italy in an official tournamant game in over 50 years. They beat them in PKs in 08. I personally don’t think that has any role, but I know some of you believe in that since you have used the same line on Italy (Italy has never beaten us in an official match). So, we’ll see what happens.
An update on Croatian Waterpolo, they beat US 7-8 match at a packed newport beach highschool. highlights could be seen below. Lets hope we can get some checkers in the stands for the big game tommorow, I’m assuming it will be televised.

Quarterfinals
Russia-Germany
Poland-Holland
Spain-England
Croatia-France
@ HAET: A great tourney would be reaching the Semifinals. Whilst beating Ireland, and drawing against Italy and Spain would be respectable. And with a good goal differential, this might just be enough to get out of the group.
once agian Bilic said thi 10000 times in every newpaper the back 4 are vida carli joe/scifo strinic
The lineup listed in the article is a good one.
Against Spain though, I would like to see a 5 man midfield. This will help fight Spain’s possession game.
So a possible lineup can be Pletikosa-Srna, Corluka, Schifo, Strinic–Modric, Dujmo–Ilicevic?, Rakitic, Pranjic–Jelavic
Pranjic’s natural position is an offensive winger. That’s the position he played in Heereven. He also has defensive qualities and can help out Strinic.
I haven’t seen too many game of Illicevic. Can he defend? If so, than he can help out Srna. I anticipate wave after wave of Spanish attacks. We need people that can defend and create chances.
Guys M’Vila is down for Fance today and Lampard is hurt. Should we rest Luka againist Norway?
What would you consider a sucessful tournament for Croatia? One victory? Would you rather one victory – two losses, or three draws? Strange, I have a good presentiment, but at the same time don’t expect much; ain’t worried either.
somebody said vukojevic should start…. boze sacuvaj.
I didn’t see the Estonia friendly, but according to Croatian Sports – both Modric & Rakitic started in Central Midfield with Peresic & Srna on the wings? And nobody has a comment on this? Two mobile inter-changing pivots is better than one, no?
Also, isn’t “bunkering” against Spain playing right into their hands? Aren’t they used to playing against that style? Some ethnic-English guy (I think he’s famous) once said something like ‘the boldest path is the safest path’ – somthing like that.
@ ante
Typical Dinaric Mountain people attitude.
@ nije Bitno,
Yes! Well said.
The one x-factor Croatia has always had is heart and passion. If we can play with those two things and play without fear of losing, I see good things in the near future.
Leave it all on the field—the only way to do it.
I would like to see Vuko start instead of Dujmovic for the next friendly, just to see how Vuko would react in the beginning of a possible Euro tension game. The formation seems good to me.
Can’t wait for the EUROs, time’s ebbing away…
@nije bitno….well said! heart must be evident from all 11 guys on the field….or we are in trouble
@jelic…..i am in the GTA as well. if nothing else from these euros, i hope for no celebrating on college and st. clair after our match with them! HRVATSKA!!!
I agree wholehartedly with nije bitno, tempo and heart…..none of the slow game we played for much of the qualifying.
We need to play like spurs play when they look good, breakneck speed, all out going for goal but with a killer bite from someone like Dujmovic or whomever are in the middle of the park to snuff out chances.
We need to go out against Ireland and set the TEMPO that we want played right when that whistle blows. We can sit here and talk about what players should play in the front middle and back all day and talk shit about our weak defense but the bottom line is that who ever is going to play middle or upfront in any of those games needs to suck it up and come back and help at all times! So yeah we need talent but we need heart and no laziness as well.
Ever since I was a little kid growing up in Toronto, with all the Italians mocking me for “not having a country” have I despised the Azzuri!
Man will I be thrilled if we can guarrantee moving on from the group stage by beating them. I read with glee every new revelation re their implosion……yee haaa!
Uvijek Vjerni!
@ante…..looking forward to seeing the italian team fall apart….their loss is our gain!
as for spain talk……we got to talk about something, right? work is kind of dull today!
“If we need points from the Spain game, we’re in deep do-do anyway. To me the only bunker mentality to be considered is if a point gets you through and as we all know playing to tie is a fool’s game anyway.”
@jelic – agreed. bunkering back makes more sense if we only need a draw and is usually not a recipe for success! to try and earn 3 points playing greek bunker soccer is not a smart move. in that case, we need to try and attack a bit and see where it goes.
but we also have to be realistic. if the top teams (holland, germany) play a lot of men behind the ball versus spain…..i think its simply realistic to assume that we will have to do the same. i mean….we are still the team that lost 1-0 to georgia recently so, by no means, are we world beaters! we need to be realistic about our team’s ability. besides, +/- could be a tiebreaker in deciding who advances so we need to be ready to protect a potential goal differential advantage in that last game and not get shelled by spain.
@armada87 – i agree that our defence stinks! that part of the team makes me the most nervous. that is just the reason why i say bunkering against spain will probably be the order of the day. i get the idea of “the best defence is a good offence” and we need to push out and attack to try and take some pressure off of our d. however, its our defence we are talking about. i think we will get counter-attacked to death! with all due respect, i don’t think our d is ready to control spain to 1 or 2 goals if we push out hard on attack.
the italy and irish games are winnable games where i think we can do a good job in possession and chances. however, spain is a different beast. they are not invincible but they are definitely the class of the group.

@ Ante Kvartuc
One game at a time.
Why are we talking about the Spain match? That’s the last thing we need to think about.
We need a W vs Ireland and at least a draw vs. Italy. Spain should become a friendly match at that point; whether we’re already in the quarterfinal or Spain already has 6 points.
I’m liking how everything is lining up for Croatia and they are my unbiased dark horses for this tournament. It’s all about flying under the radar. Italy is in shambles right now and Balotelli has even said that he will walk off the pitch if any racist comments are directed towards him. So he’s on edge before the tourney even begins.
I have Germany winning it all but I think we can make some noise. We beat Ireland and Italy and the Spain match is a scrimmage.
You heard it here first!
First time I heard the details that Bonucci was officially named, but not informed, and under official investigation since May 3:
http://www.football-italia.net/19430/bonucci-named-betting-probe
What does Prandelli do now? Don’t think he can play him, they are getting bad press in US, UK and Italia so prob everywhere! And I don’t think legally they can replace him on squad, right? Only due to injury confirmed by UEFA drs too? Am I correct? In that case they have a 22 man squad and can’t bring Ranocchia
If you want to stream the game ladies and momci, go to wiziwig.tv.
Just another awesome thing I am doing for Croatians worldwide.
@ Armada87 So all guns a blazing then. If we win the first two and have enough to advance then Fuck yeah lets make a game out of it with three strikers up front.
To the people saying we have to bunker, we don’t have the defense to bunker!!!
I could see if we had standout defenders like years past (Robi Kovac, Dario Simic, Igor Tudor, a younger Joe Simunic, etc.) but the fact of the matter is, even if we do bunker and keep most of the boys behind the wall, we don’t have the defenders to really keep up with the Spanish and I have a feeling that if we bunker, we’ll start resorting to fouling them like crazy (and probably picking up stupid cards in the process). Even against Spain, especially if we need points, we have to go guns blazing and hope we can crack their defense for 2-3 goals and pray that our defense plays the game of a lifetime and holds Spain to 1-2 goals.
If we sit back and bunker, they’ll shred us for 3-4 goals easy and we probably will score one if we get lucky.
To say we need to bunker against Spain to me is premature. If we get max points from the first two games, the match against Spain is more or less irrelevant so why bunker? I can’t stand negative Greek soccer, play to win! Yeah, sure Spain is excellent and would no doubtr make you pay but I say play the game and play to win.
If we need points from the Spain game, we’re in deep do-do anyway. To me the only bunker mentality to be considered is if a point gets you through and as we all know playing to tie is a fool’s game anyway.
Looking forward to Euro, especially starting off on the right foot against the Shamrock Army…..
Uvijek Vjerni!!!!!!!
I would like to see that line-up as well. Just two possible tweaks:
1. Pranjic vs Strinic at LB? Strinic better defensively, but not as good offensively. Maybe play Pranjic against Ireland, but Strinic against Italy and Spain. I would worry that Pranjic would get schooled against Italy and Spain.
2. Eduardo vs Olic. I’d rather see a Jelavic-Olic partnership, with Eduardo subbing in for Jelavic (if he is underperforming) and Mandzo subbing in for Olic. In no way would I want to see Jelavic/Mandzo starting.
I would take a risk with Iličević over Rakitic, but not just based on the Estonia performance. When healthy, Iličević has played very well (although in spurts), whereas Rakitic has not had a good season. He also seems hungrier than most other guys, which is what we need in this tournament. This was evident against the Estonia game. The first half remined me of Croatia during the Euro 2008 qualifying — hungary, quick and great to watch. Second half seemed like more of the WC 2010/Euro 2012 qualifiers — slow, boring, lacking energy and creativity.
spain match is the third and final match of the group…..saying that we need to bunker against them is obvious. hopefully, we can do well in the first two matches and play for a draw against spain. for the first two matches, this formation is one i like.
i agree with the emphasis on speed, vida on the bench and two strikers up top. not sure if eduardo is in form enough to start but, maybe he plays 60 mins and olic comes in for 30 (or vice versa).
what do you guys think….if simunic is healthy, does he play or ride the pine?
Spain eats up 95% of the formations thrown at them…. No matter who we throw on our backline, I’m sure they’ll still have their way when it comes to possession and chances. Our defense will have to hustle and play hard for 90 minutes against them and have no mental gaffes.
We need to bunker vs spain just like Germany does. Focus on Ireland and Italy and Bunker Spain you fools.
Spain would eat up that formation!!
Like the lineup, wouldn’t mind seeing a 4-1-3-1-1 tested with the same lineup except Kranjcar on for Eduardo and Jelavic in front of Kranjcar.
I like your lineup… He’ll I like most lineups without shithead in them… Aka unsuper Mario
