NK Rijeka remain hot, winning their Europa League third qualifying first leg match against Zilina 2-1 Thursday night from Kantrida. Former Hajduk player, Anas Sharbini, got Rijeka on the board early, scoring in just the third minute of play against the Slovakian club. After poor defense from Zilina, Sharbini took the ball on the left side of the box and sent a curled shot just inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
Bosnian Zoran Kvržić would double the lead in the 59th minute, giving Rijeka a powerful advantage going into the last 30 minutes of the match, keeping his composure in the box with the ball heading back down towards the field. Kvržić found an opening and slotted home to make it 2-0. However, Zilina would pull one back in the 74th minute to earn an all-important away goal in the 2-1 Rijeka win, when the ball was easily headed into the back of the net following a deflection off the post. Rijeka are now 90 minutes away from a Europa League playoff berth with the return leg in Slovakia next Thursday. They are playing much better than their Croatian counterparts, Hajduk Split, who have staggered in every qualifying match thus far this campaign.
Rijeka-Zilina Highlights
Hajduk Split are in danger of being knocked out of the Europa League third qualifying round for the third straight year after losing 1-0 to Dila GoriThursday night. After dominating the first half with possession and chances, Hajduk would fall asleep on defense with Gori capitalizing on the blunder in the 24th minute. And that’s all she wrote for Hajduk as they would never recover.
However, there would be chances as Mijo Caktas ripped a shot from 23 yards out in the last second of the first half only for it to thump off the upper-right crossbar. Hajduk were pressing the Gori defense well in the first half, just with no goal to show for their efforts. It was more of the same after the break but Jozinovic’s sending off midway through the second would hurt their chances. Hajduk will now travel to Georgia next Thursday to try to overturn their first leg disappointment at Poljud.

Cico…? Are you there….?
Soon to be up and running Sammir blog in the near future. It’s going to a great fun and fact filled world of sambo blog. commentary, unphotoshopped images, jokes, one-liners, critiques. brazil facts, dinamo attendance figures, sammir jersey sales figures, fashion tips, some mamic related stuff too. You guys are going to love it. I’ll pass on the link when it’s ready.
well it disadvantages technical teams that play possession a lot lol thats for sure.. prolly suit england long ball teams
A poor field would have to benefit the weaker team.
i read the stats of the game, Hajduk totally dominated it seemed like and once Dila Gori got that goal on the counter, Hajduk pressed but couldn’t crack their defense
@nije bitno…..agreed. i thought they actually played OK. got a bad break on the counter goal and were unlucky not to score. As long as the kids keep playing, I am OK.
ugh were hajduk at home and lost ? : (
Now we get to listen to Tudor bitch about how bad the field was AGAIN! Shit for brains, both teams have to play on it. The sad part is, when Hajduk goes to Georgia to play, it will look like a 5 star stadium.
I cant believe anybody expects a whole lot out of Hajduk ( average age on the team is 20 years old) They are young and have no experience. They dominated tho whole game just don’t know how to score. I love them and wish them the best but I’m realistic. They need time and experience.
Forza Fiume !
crickets…
maybe Hajduk manage a hail mary esqe goal?
Panic at the Disco!
Udinese dismantling Siroki 3-0
1-0 Gila Dori
honestly, I want Hajduk to rack up all the coefficient points they can, but I don’t see them getting past this team…
Rijeka all day!!!
Easy with all the commie obsession, chill the fuck out, get a girl, get your dick wet for once (some of you), log off the computer once and a while.
please, not another commie argument……
Every club that was something in the yugo days had a commie element.
@Marko
You’re not insinuating that Hajduk have a commie connection, are you?!
Hajduk facing Dila Gori – isn’t Gori the place where Stalin was born? Let’s see if the Bili are offered a complimentary tour of the town’s Stalin Museum during the return leg…
Here’s hoping Hajduk (and Rijeka) both get decent wins tonight.
Ziva, yeah it was the “thai all-stars” Team man u lost to believe it or not, that was just before they came to AUS and spanked the Aus “all-stars” team 5-1.
I didnt remember hajduk beating inter 2-0 last year away from home – that’s pretty impressive! Im assuming it was a second tier inter team but even so its good.
anyway, gl to the HNL Clubs tomorrow morning (aus time) !
Another thing where MLS has the HNL beat is the fan experience. Modern stadiums, upscale restaurants, working wi-fi, HD scoreboards, covered seats, clean bathrooms, etc….HNL could learn a few things from MLS.
Don’t compare the leagues based on all star games. MLS has actually won something like 8 of the 12 all star games against foreign teams. They have beaten EPL sides.
Remember, Man United lost to some team out in Asia on their tour.
It’s so hard to compare the leagues because the HNL is a feeder league for the rest of Europe. MLS does send players to Europe but not at the same rate or the same level of success. MLS and US soccer, when it comes to the club system and the development of players at the academy level, are years behind the rest of the modern soccer world. But, they are getting better every year. The game continues to grow in the US and in 20 years the MLS will be ahead of the HNL. Dinamo would win MLS is they were in it, but he rest of the HNL clubs would struggle to be in the top 3 or 4.
One aspect where MLS is better, is the money. They pay better and they pay on time.
I know I’m biased but do you guys really think the MLS is that much better than the Croatian league? I’m watching Roma v all stars and it’s a pretty bad spanking. Prva liga is definitely top heavy skill wise, but if these are the best players MLS has, it’s shite. I understand its a friendly, theyre playing roma, and they don’t practice together but, this is bad.
