Dinamo defeats AC Milan 2-1 on the final day of Champions League group play but will miss out on the knockout round due to goal differential, finishing in 25th position on the table. Sporting Lisbon’s 77th minute equalizer vs. Bologna would end Dinamo’s dream European run where they were victorious vs. AC Milan, RB Salzburg and Slovan Bratislava. It’s crazy that Dinamo matched Manchester City on points during the 8-game League Phase but will fall short due to goal differential.
Baturina and Pjaca both had phenomenal games vs. AC Milan; each scoring a goal. Big props to new Dinamo manager Fabio Cannavaro for rallying the troops against a very good AC Milan club who were searching for a result. A win vs. Dinamo would have given Milan a bye into the Champions League Round of 16. Now the Italian giants must go through the playoff round; so they had all to play for in Zagreb. The game shifted on its side when AC Milan’s Yunus Musah picked up his 2nd yellow card of the match in the 39th minute. Dinamo played a tough game as Milan had plenty of chances — even with 10 men — and should ecstatic with the result. This will definitely be a lift going back into HNL play knowing they can play with the best. Unfortunately, Dinamo did not control their own destiny for top-24 going into this match. But they have to me happy with the result even though CL is over for them.
Truly a shame that Dinamo will miss CL knockout round matches due to goal differential. Looking back on it, the 9-2 loss to Bayern Munich and 2-2 draw vs. Monaco (Dinamo led 2-0) ended up killing them.
Once Sucic and Misic, Petkovic got injured, it was over for Dinamo.
Great result for our Dinamo. Too bad they didn’t progress, but its probably better in the long run. Now they can focus on the league full of confidence. This was by far the best CL campaign in Dinamo’s history, and we should all be proud.
2 nil at home against Monoco and letting it slip was ultimately the killer for Dinamo. Really should have held on in that game.
This was the true reason they didn’t progress. How could a team in Champions League have mud puddle in front of a goal? For those who didn’t see the game, Dinamo was up by 2 late in the game and defending a corner. Keeper came out to collect the corner but slipped in the mud, gifting Monaco their first goal. Then a pk to tie the game. Bush league.
Both gvardiol and kovacic destroyed dinamo hopes of qualification. Why are they celebrating their goals?
Statistically, there was something like a 99% chance of progressing in the top-24 if you finished with at least 11 points.
Generally, 8 or 9 points is enough.
This season was the outlier year.
Jebiga. I read somewhere that statistically there was a 1% chance of getting 11 points and not progressing.
Fuckin Munich running up the score that game. Hope they get bounced nest round.
Don’t forget the 0-0 draw to Celtic
They were never really in that game.
