No HNL this week due to the international break, but news still surrounds the league during its time off.
Hajduk Split has been under a lot of financial pressure lately and fear that they will be forced to file for bankruptcy no later than November 1. No one, including the city of Split, want to take the financial burden of the club and and have left them looking for an answer on their own. If the club cannot resolve the issue, it will be forced to file for bankruptcy and be punished by the league with a deduction of 10 points.
Dinamo Zagreb has cancelled its scheduled friendly with third division side NK Grobničan due to a video released by the players of Grobničan. The video mocks the recent video made by Dinamo’s Mateo Kovačić and teammates urging fans to attend the game against PSG by bribing them with a large sum of prize money. Dinamo was going to visit the club and play a friendly against them to help celebrate the club’s 80th birthday, but decided to cancel after the video was released.
RNK Split has named Hajduk legend Zoran Vulić as their new coach. After failing to obtain a better record by this point in the season, the Split chairman decided to fire Tonči Bašić from the position. A number of coaches were considered for the position, including Robert Prosinečki. Prosinečki declined the offer. RNK face Vulić’s former club in two weeks.
“The aim of Split is to play in Europe and the Croatian Cup finals,” Vulić said. “I know that the schedule is tough, especially the match against Hajduk, but I do not shrink from the fact that I am a Hajdukovac, but I am a professional who goes into every game wanting to win. I want Split impose any opponent, even if it was Dinamo. “
KHL MEDVEŠČAK
KHL Medveščak has taken a maximum four points from their last two games. The first two points came from their win against Orli Znojmo from the Czech Republic. Kyle Greentree scored the game winner in the game, securing the points. The game also marked the debut of the newest member of the Bears, Dustin Jeffery. Jeffery comes from the Pittsburgh Penguins and plans to play for the Bears during the lockout. Jeffery is a product of the Pens’ AHL affiliate from Wilkes-Berry and has played 66 games for the Pens, scoring 12 goals. He was also part of their Stanley Cup winning team in 2009. Jeffery got an assist in his debut.
The Bears also defeated Dornbirner EC 4-3 in overtime on Sunday. Jeffery scored two goals in his second game for Medveščak, including the game winner in OT. The Bears are now in fourth place, only one point out of third. They face last-place HC Innsbruck on Friday.
