REUTERS/PRANJIĆ (L) FIGHTING OFF DUTCHMAN WESLEY SNEIJDER
Everything looked to be under control for Bayern Munich on Tuesday. The Bavarian Giants stole a 1-0 road victory in Milan two weeks ago and were leading 2-1 at halftime in their own house in the second leg. Bayern didn’t even bunker down like their Italian counterparts did to them in the 2010 Champions League Final; they kept pressing and played for the kill.
What could go wrong?
Two second half Inter Milan goals is what went wrong. Bayern couldn’t find the back of the net on numerous break-away attempts and Wesley Sneijder’s perfectly placed shot in the 63′ gave Inter life as the game stood at 2-2. Bastian Schweinsteiger made one of the poorest attempts at blocking the ball on the shot and has been requested by CSR to hand in his ‘Man Card’ for the foreseeable future.
SHAME ON YOU SCHWEINSTEIGER (#31)
Croatian Danijel Pranjić played the full match at left back for Bayern and was caught on the wrong side of a bad call in the 4′ as he was the last man back to keep Inter’s Samuel Eto’o onside in the linesman’s eyes. Replays show that Eto’o was well offside. Pranjić had an average game on the back line as many of his crosses were blocked before making it into the box.
It feels as if Pranjić is an outcast on Bayern alongside a few other players. Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Müller run the show and are on a different level than fellow teammates, speaking respect and not skill. It makes Pranjić look like a one-dimensional player. He plays defense and crosses the ball into the box when on the wing. Simple as that. With Bayern’s exit from the Champions League this season, it makes you wonder what kind of impact Ivica Olić could have made for the Germans this season, both in CL and the Bundesliga.
PRANJIĆ (#23) LOOKED TO PLAY THE TRAP CORRCTLY
Bayern Munich were a few minutes away from the Champions League quarterfinals where they would have joined Shakhtar Donetsk (Darijo Srna, Eduardo) and Tottenham Hotspur (Luka Modrić, Niko Kranjčar, Vedran Ćorluka). Instead, Danijel Pranjić will sit at home knowing Bayern will not receive any silverware this season after picking up the Bundesliga and German Cup titles last year. Soon to be Croatian starting defender, Dejan Lovren, travels with his Lyon club to Spain on Wednesday in a second leg Champions League Round of 16 duel against European giants Real Madrid. This will be Lovren’s biggest test to date in the most difficult of atmospheres- a packed Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Will Lovren and company overcome a 1-1 home leg tie and make it six Croatians in the Champions League quarterfinals?
MACEDONIAN GORAN PANDEV ENDS BAYERN’S CL SEASON
Inter denied Bayern a Champions League title last May and Pandev denied them a next round berth with an 88′ rocket into the corner of the net. Bayern currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga table, one spot behind a Champions League berth for next season. There is still work to do in Bavaria.
zoran primorac….wow, that is a name from past. My friends and I had a long night out drinking with Primorac at the 96 Olympics along with his doubles partner.
