(During the next 30 days, starting May 10th, CroatianSports will be giving “season grades” to 30 of Croatia’s most important football players: Starting XI, bench, fringe, prospects. Grades will be given on preseason expectations vs. actual season performance; not stats.)
Day 11: Lovro Majer
Season Grade: F
Season Highlight:
Scoring a junk goal in injury time against Canada at the World Cup
Team next season:
- Remain at Rennes (99%)
- Possible loan move for one season (no current rumors — 1%)
What the future holds:
Majer isn’t going anywhere as he still has plenty to prove in France. It was only last summer that Majer was dubbed the next Luka Modrić, being scouted by some of Europe’s most elite clubs in Real Madrid, PSG, and Arsenal. However, the past year has been an absolute disaster for Majer at Rennes; who are expected to finish 5th/6th this season. Majer was supposed to be one of the top players in France this year. Instead, he only has one Ligue 1 goal to his name alongside five assists. Expectations were high for Majer as he could have easily become a large fish in a small pond at Rennes. Majer only started 16 times for Rennes. Not only did he not produce, but for a majority of the season he wasn’t even getting ample playing time.
On top of that, Majer’s Croatia stock also plummeted. He only played 120 minutes at the World Cup in in 7 1/2 games. Majer only received one start (playing 66 minutes) in the 3rd Place match vs. Morocco. Luckily, he is only 25 years old and could turn around his 52-week low just as fast as it dipped.
You missed the part where he scored an important penalty in the shootout at the World Cup
If Juric is still coach of Torino next season, loan him out to them.
I don’t follow Jurić, but a lot of Italian pundits love him as coach.
Yet Torino seems glued to 10th place with him.
Tudor took a relegation caliber club in Verona to 9th place.
Curious too see what happens to Jurić in the next couple of years. He could be a candidate for us after Dalić.
I wish they would look elsewhere but we all know it gonna be biscan
What’s the overall consensus why his season was so bad in France?
I feel personally he is too slow
But love his technical stuff
He has room to grow for sure and I hope he gets there
Not sure why Pasalic would get a D+ for a lackluster season and Majer gets an F for the same. I think they both had the same kind of season personally. An F is way too harsh.
Majer contributed in our Nation’s League matches which and I believe put him on the scoring sheet which contributed to a win. That wasn’t mentioned.
And that wasn’t a junk goal in my view, it was well placed.
That said it isn’t the best season for him.
Much more was expected from Majer vs. Pasalic prior to the season.
Lovro Majer can’t really do much for Croatia if he was consistently been given 4 minutes of playing time, Dalic was treating him like he was a 17/18 year old player subbing him in that late.
But don’t get me wrong, his season has flopped for Rennes and needs a kick up the ass.
