Kovačić has improved drastically over the course of the past few months, and today’s display against Liverpool is yet another example of the midfielder’s utter dominance over the Premier League. Kovačić is Chelsea’s best midfielder (and player) this season, and he has earned himself the right to be in the conversation for top 3 midfielder’s in the Premier League. Kovačić always lacked confidence and this would show in his lack of significant impact on the game as well as his inability to produce in the final third of the pitch. Kovačić’s stats and his absolute screamer suggest otherwise.
- 90′ played
- 1 goal
- 1 shot on target
- 104 touches
- 60 accurate passes (80%)
- 4/8 long balls
- 4/4 successful dribbles
- 12/13 ground duels won
- 1/1 aerial duel won
- was fouled 2 times
- 1 clearance
- 6 tackles
Kovačić received an 8.4 rating from SofaScore and an 8.6 from WhoScored. If his name was Ngolo Kanté or Jorginho he would’ve gotten a 9.0+.
Grbić played a very good game for Lille today. Check out the highlights. Lille is basically not a very good team this year due to poor defensive discipline, and Lens would have put them away early had it not been for Grbić. Even in the penalties, he read every single shot correctly, even though he only managed to stop one. This guy is Croatia’s number 1 keeper right now. Livaković, Kalinić, and Ivusić can compete for the backup role. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqwCUf3qkOM
Hajduk could be getting Nikola Kalinic in the transfer window in which Hajduk’s intentions are also to sell Marin Ljubicic. Shambles.
I’ve been seeing several media talking about how well Hajduk is doing this year and the topic of conversation lately has been about players returning to the club… Kalinic & Perisic the most talked about.
Everyone here knows my thoughts on Kalinic and maybe the best place for him is back home in Split. He hasn’t had a decent season since he left Fiorentina back in 2018 and even prior to that, I’ve always felt he’s just a mid level player on his best day. When I look at a player, I don’t just look at where their playing, I also look at his performances and to be right out BOLD…Kalinic is one of the shittiest types of player I’ve ever watched. Hands down, the biggest prima donna and not worth paying any attention to. I’ve seen him play on soo many occasions and I really got sick and tired of watching him constantly flop even when barely touched. Yes, he makes some good diagonal runs but he’s weak, can’t hold up the ball very well (he’s super weak) and when he’s not in good form (like he’s usually been) he offers very little….the fact that Hajduk want him really surprises me, even if he’s probably good for the league, he’s proven to be a pussy and a “me first” type of player. I’d rather see some young kid at Hajduk instead of Kalinic for soo many reasons!
On the topic of Hajduk, can someone please tell me what all the hype was about Krovinovic? Damn, I was expecting someone that controls the midfield in each game he plays and yet this guy is nothing special at all, probably just happy to be at a Croatian club that wants him…most Hajduk players are far better than him!
Oh man, I just checked his stats….18 goals in 87 games since he left Fiorentina. Thats 0.20 goals per game…with those stats, I think Maminjo would do better than him 😉
Kalinic has flaws, but he is better than Mandzo
Whoever hyped Krovinović was just generating buzz on the chance that he would develop INTO a star midfielder. The guy has excellent dribbling skills, but that’s all I have seen from him. Not on the level of the repka by a long shot.
Oprosti me Markus. Dumb shit to fight over. My main point was not complaining about the ratings when they don’t suit you. Particularly playing the Hrvati get no love card. Hate seeing that one unless it’s truly warranted. Also stating that your opinions are always factual. Sure the stats are facts but your opinion based off of said stats is still your opinion. Again, nothing worth getting heated over on my end. Carry on ✌
ti si veliki covjek Pog…bravo majstore!
Didn’t state that my opinions are always factual, I said the stats are always factual. Regardless, no bad blood here, we’re all Hrvati. My apologies if there was any miscommunication.
evo ga…sad smo svi prijatelji!
atta boy Markus!
Let me put the argument between Markus and Pog to rest. Both of you have made some good arguments but both are arguing a bit much over this topic.
1st, its extremely rare to see a rating of 9 for any player, its also rare to see an 8 and thats going back to the old school of rating players when a 7.5 meant they scored and had an excellent game. I remember the days when guys like Platini and Maradona rarely saw a higher rating than an 8/10.
The argument about Kovacic being the real deal is a fair argument. He’s been CONSISTENT for the past few seasons and we have to acknowledge that! Kovacic has become very relevant to Chelsea’s success and with that said, his recent performances for us are fantastic. I think the reason why many people don’t see him as a “super” player is because they expect him to carry the team but the truth is, he’s not that type of player…not even at Chelsea. At Chelsea, they know how to appreciate his value and contributions. He shares the responsibility to advance the ball forward but his greater value is his transitional play….bringing the ball from his defenders and advancing the play through midfield. He’s definitely done an amazing job with this and I’m truly happy for him.
Pog and Markus, both of you should apologize to the other….you’re both good guys and both contribute well to this site.
Markus, I think Pog is making a valid point about something in particular….don’t get mad at me for this. As much as I appreciate all your efforts to introduce and provide us with knowledge of some younger potential stars, I also feel like we tend to set the parade route a little early and we’ve done this far too many times. Sure, we have some talented young players in the mix but something I feel we do a little too much is focus on their present status and not take into consideration that there’s a HUGE difference to playing at the highest level and then performing consistently…thats not an easy task! Example…we’ve watched the entire Croatian soccer world include Roko Simic into the National team and suggest he’s ready. The truth is, he’s been “hot” playing in a weak 2nd division league and at times been brought up to the first team…only because he’s been hot and to give him some experience and well deserved confidence. That league (2nd div) is worse than the Croatian prva liga and it really isn’t a good measuring tool…at least not yet! He needs more time to deal with the real ups and downs of a professional soccer player playing at a good club in a decent league…this record he has now is great but only the beginning!
Its tough to be a solid professional. Soo many factors play into how well a player can advance as a professional and their maturity and confidence…as well as some luck is needed.
You’re missing the point though, we aren’t talking about young players right now. The article Pog chooses to attack me on is a Kova article. You said so yourself, Kova is the real deal. So by confirming this, I’m over-hyping him? Not sure why Pog decided to start spewing nonsense over an article in which I’ve stated pure facts (statistics) and only 2 hot takes (Kova is a top 3 prem midfielder and is dominating the prem) that I didn’t even state are facts, I suggested them. He’s making it seem as though I need to be strictly factual 100% of the time.
I think Pog is saying stats can be interpreted differently…not sure but thats how I see his comments and he’s somewhat right.
I’ve seen Kovacic play games where he hasn’t lost the ball, he’s made several completed passes (laterally or backwards) and he’s been on the attack on very few occasions and yet if we read the stats and didn’t see the game, it would come across as if he had the perfect game. I think his comments about those types of games are valid although I can say he’s definitely slowly changed and has done far better as far as being a relevant reason as to why is club has been successful.
His confidence has increased, his ability to be more involved in the final 3rd, especially in this past year, is far more noticeable.
Guys
Why do we argue about these things?
Kovacic while not perfect, is really picking up his play and we have to celebrate that
I for one am certainly guilty of jumping on hype trains here and there but that’s ok
We should be excited about our boys
We have legit predictions of being able to win a World Cup
It’s absolutely astonishing how good we are as a whole year In and out
I personally love the reporting these young bucks are giving us
The information I believe is worth reading
Let’s hope all our boys will continue to grow and as even laknat still has hope in the god of halilovic let’s not lose hope in our early to mid 20s guys like vlasic
Cause it really does seem if a Croat doesn’t get Injured, we seem to get better with age
for those losers who celebrate Christmas and got hype by media]
clearly, the media is easily manipulating people these days…

Loser for celebrating Christmas? Deciphering your posts are like trying to read hieroglyphics.
1. MATEO KOVAČIĆ (8.9)
Kovačić revealed after the game that he’s still not quite fully fit after his nearly two-month layoff for injury and isolation, but he certainly had me fooled. Recency bias aside, this was surely one of his best games yet, and that’s no mean feat considering that he was voted Chelsea Player of the Year in 2019-20.
Agreed markus is doing some great work and bringing a lot of interesting content to the table. Certainly far from always right and of course overhyped on the youth but generally makes a case at least. As he picks up some of my wisdom over the years he’ll be even better
Ha! Too many of you pussies live that woe is me lifestyle. “Jorginho or Kante would’ve gotten higher grades.”
Enjoy your pandering articles and good luck with your pathetic insecurities
Literally, come out of the basement dude.
Poglavnik,
Thanks for pointing out that I and others may suffer from too much feelings of self pitty and insecurity.
I will look at ways of improving my character.
In the event that you are not perfect, I will offer you the same courtesy:
Is the name Poglavnik one that was given to you by others, or is it a self proclamation -your way of creating hype for yourself?
Is it possible that you are pointing fingers at others in an attempt to create a diversion away from yourself- blaming others of the very thing that you are possibly the most guilty of?
Neka pati, koga smeta
Hrvatska je prvak svijeta
Neka samo suze rone
Mi imamo šampione
Is the above verse from the song hype?
Of course it is, but most fans love it anyways.
I appreciate the writers and contributors on this site for both the hype and the play down of our players. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. At times I need to agree to disagree.
The Vlašič headline, for example, read “Finally, Vlašič scores 1st goal for West Ham”.
The “Finally” was an unnecessary negative in my opinion. The labeling of the goal as an “easy junk Goal” in the article, and, stating that Vlašić has had an incredibly slow start this season is more proof of some play down and ultimately brings balance on this site.
Perhaps the net sum leans towards the side of Hype somewhat?
Either way, unless you are using other peoples opinions to bet on games with money that you can’t afford to lose, it doesn’t really matter in my mind.
Lastly, I doubt that the players read this site and find it to be too much pressure to live up to the hype, and if so, perhaps it’s one of the reasons they get paid as well as they do?
Pog has always been a clown. The veliki hrvat as I like to call him. Typical self-righteous keyboard warrior who wouldn’t say any of this crap to someone’s face
Yea let’s crap on Markus who is helping grow this site and gives us content so we can have a place for discourse. The fact of the matter is this site would be worse off without Markus. And is better off without pricks like Pog
Pog has no clue so its best to ignore him. Reminds me of some of the anti Croat losers in some other boards who wet their panties with glee whenever we (Croatia) lose so that they can say they “told you so”…lol
Markus-if you are reading, keep up the great posts…love the enthusiam and passion for our guys….
Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words
At this point I think its pretty clear that Poglavnik has never played nor does he understand the game at any decent level.
Spot on.
keep an eye on sleeper pick Algeria in the Pot 2 race. The African conference is playing the Africa Cup of Nations and ELO rankings have them scooping up a whopping 94 points before the next ranking comes out! Still Ed @ Football-Rankings has us coming out of February ahead of them (slightly). Still it would be nice if Algeria dropped some points in their tournament this month!
http://www.football-rankings.info/2022/01/fifa-ranking-february-2022-probable_2.html
I would like to see Croatia play some decent teams in freindlies, do well and pick up some points as the result. No announcements yet about freindlies to my knowledge -has anyone heard anything?
Modric was the closest man to scoring on two occasions, denied by Soria first and then the bar. He was exquisite at times, on a day in which his teammates completely failed in so many ways. Modric deserved better from the rest of the XI. He gave his all, whereas so many, especially the forwards, gave zero.
Rating: 7.5
Kovačić has been maligned by his lack of goal scoring over the years.
He has been playing great for years and has assists and hockey assists(key passes) to prove it.
He scores a Puskas award winning volley from 25 meters and we are over reacting?
This dude starts banging in goals and we win the World Cup this year.
Plus their will be life after a Modrić.
Please enjoy Kovačić and his level of play NOW and years to come.
It’s fascinating how recency bias dominates this site.
Vlasic finally scores a goal in the prem and he’s all the rage on this site for the last week.
Kova does the same and here we go again.
What have you done for me lately seems to be all the rage!
On the Markus vs Pog argument on this thread about Kovacic:
I just want to point out to Pog that 6 tackles won in a premier league match is huge. Apart from his injury this season he has been the best midfielder in the prem.
However, he gave the ball away cheap a few times today in midfield, 1 of those nearly resulted in a liverpool breakaway goal…..
But, he is not back to his best yet after the long layoff. what really impressed me was the way he really drove his team forward at times. really aggressive pressing, big character.
On a slightly different subject. Nothing to do with football…This isn’t aimed at anyone. Just had a thought then realised it might come in useful for someone reading this site.
A conspiracy is a real thing. People get together, they make a plan, but they keep it secret because if they don’t keep it secret it won’t work. It’s called a conspiracy. Happens every day.
OK. If anyone ever labels you a conspiracy theorist just explain that to them. Conspiracies are real. What people really mean, when they say you are a conspiracy nut, is that your interpretation of events isn’t the same as the conventional or official one. But we all know that things get covered up by the media and governments so why shouldn’t we try to work it ourselves right?
Great. “Occams Razor”. Is one of the most important scientific principles. It basically states that in the absence of conclusive evidence you should always assume that the simplest explanation is in fact the correct one. Simple
So for example: Some people say the moon landings were faked. OK, how difficult would it be to fake them? probably more difficult than actually going to the moon. Think about it. For one thing the Russians and Americans were in global competition to promote their way of life to the world, so if the US had faked the landings, the russians would simply have supplied evidence to the world and made the US a laughing stock. The only way that the moon landings could have been faked is if the US and Russia actually weren’t enemies at all and it was all just for show. You know, like if both countries are actually just puppets of the illuminati for example or whatever…OK…Occams Razor: How are we doing on the simplicity?
Conclusion? The moon landings weren’t faked.
If you try using Occams razor sometimes you’ll get interesting results. Often Occams razor will tell you that a “conspiracy theory” is more plausible than the official story. I’ll leave it there for now. Thanks guys
His opinions are biased fanboy shit. I realise 6 tackles is a fair amount but this was also a really fast and frantic game at times. Wonder how many other midfielders had in that match? Also how great was Kova against Brighton last week? I’ll save you guys researching the stats and tell you he was not very. Again nothing against Kova just don’t like people pissing in my ears.
Biased fanboy shit? Lol.
I think you’re exaggerating. As a Croat, yes I hype up our players and of course I have bias towards them. I hardly think I’m so extreme by saying the things I said in this article about Kova. Of course he was shit against Brighton, but why would I write an article about how bad he was? You make no sense. Again, great point by Crnkovic in stating that 6 tackles is a lot. If you don’t know basic things like that then how reputable is your football opinion? Maybe you just don’t know shit about the sport so you’re misinterpreting my analysis? LOL, put yourself in check pal.
I believe 6 tackles was more than any other player in the game. also kovacic had more touches than any other player. the pressing in the game was unreal. so very difficult to get on the ball in midfield. definately top performance. leave markus alone Pog, if you don’t like people “pissing in your ears” you’re on the wrong site 😂😂
Thank you, finally some common sense. Don’t know how showing impressive stats is overhyping.
Apologies. How dare I question The Irrefutable One. Nothing but facts in those fanboy postings. Sounds like he’s a shooin for Prem team of the year and he’ll definitely be nominated for the Puskas because that goal was a potential winner of the award. I definitely don’t come here for honest journalism. Doesn’t mean someone’s writing is above criticism
You’re getting out of hand, this is just ridiculous now. Did I lie to you guys? How’s this not honest? When did we say this was pure journalism? I’m allowed to have an opinion. I never once say in my articles that Kovacic MUST win the Puskas and that he IS a top 3 Prem midfielder. I’m simply suggesting it because it is a possibility. I don’t mind criticism but when it isn’t constructive and just simply wrong then I won’t accept that.
Have a great day, Pog. Thanks for demonstrating your intellect and 20+ years of football knowledge that mustn’t be questioned.
You too Mr Irrefutable. Can’t wait for the next Croat to have a great game and then have those achievements put way out of context. You’ve become a real pro at it.
There you go! Did I forget to mention Kova is the second coming of Jesus Christ?

here…
I give you a replay _o)!|
@Crnkovic, fake or not, who cares? What’s it gonna be this year, 50 years since man last walked on the moon? Why is it so? Would you argue, because NASA was more advanced in ’69 and ’72?
Costs money to go to the moon. There is no political point anymore. My point is that some people believe it was faked. Some people think elvis is still alive. Some people think there is a communist plot to destroy american values. Some people think covid is a hoax. Some people believe there is a conspiracy to destroy the “white race” etc. Simple logic shows all these conspiracies to be absurd. However there are other conspiracies which if you apply the same logic are completely believable and indeed much more so than what the official explanation is. So use logic instead of bending the facts to fit what you want to be true. Money is power, control is everything, excuses are needed. Sometimes the excuses come from the “left” sometimes from the “right”. Who benefits? Few. Who suffers? Everyone else. The US didn’t want to enter WW2, some say that british intelligence was aware of the Japanese plan to attack pearl harbour but didnt let america know in order to force America to join the war and thereby win the war. Is that complicated? I dont think so. It makes perfect sense. Some say american business interests were funding the nazis during the war? Is that complicated? No. It’s called investment. What is better for the banks? Communism? Or capitalism? It’s not rocket science. Think carefully about who your friends and enemies really are.
@Crnkovic
Germany and Japan had a treaty under which if either Germany or Japan were attacked by a third power, the country which was not attacked by the third power automatically is at war with that third power. Of course the U.S knew of this pact.
In Henry Stimson’s diary he wrote how Roosevelt wondered how he chould maneuver Japan into a position of firing the first shot without allowing too much danger to themselves. A little later Pearl harbour happened.
I think it’s silly to believe that America didn’t know that Pearl harbour was going to happen with all we know now, in fact in Stimson’s diary Roosevelt is shown to know that an attack from Japan was imminent, but let it happen.
Great stuff by @Markus!
Great goal, it’s one of those moments where you take what’s on offer, and a goal like that was offered up and he took it well, good for him, I’ve always liked the player!
Do you guys remember when Jean Pierre Papin would be on a breakaway, one on one with the keeper but he’d still smash in goals from outside the box when others would take on the keeper to try make sure of it?
Drmic making Croatian hip hop videos with turbo serbo, coke sniffing types.
So much for Rijeka winning the league.
Looked like the karate kid doing the crane kick!
Nice goal. Better celebration with the Sign of the Cross.
Good things come to those who wait. Kovacic played many years in the shadow of a number greats at Real, never got the opportunity to shine. Now that he’s getting some time in the light he’s really starting to blossom.
I wish all these pundits and psychics would shut up about us winning the WC. They’re gonna blow our cover and mess up all the betting odds.
Ajmo dečki!!’
Bog i Hrvati
100 % Stari,
I also loved the combination of the goal as well as the celebration.
Great goal delivery that required huge confidence to even attempt, and certainly elite skill to execute.
How unselfish of Kovačić it was afterwards in the celebration-waving the finger in a no, no, no manner to the huge celebration of the fans, and followed by the sign of the cross – saying don’t give me the credit, but rather to God for my gifts and opportunities, and lastly, waiving to the fans and sending kisses to them- saying thanks for the compliments and love you guys for your support.
So WhoScored are against Croatia but giving Kova the Puskas and 9+ is not a biased opinion
If you can give me a good reason why Kova does not merit a 9+ rating I will gladly eat my words. Just one reason.
Also, I’m not the only one calling this a goal of the year candidate. Just scroll through social media a bit and you’ll see everyone else shouting for it (including Liverpool fans).
As for the WhoScored and SofaScore ratings, Messi once got a 9.5 after a game in which he got 1 assist. Many of these platforms are very biased since the rating system isn’t even for everyone.
K. I’ll bite. How about that measly 80% passing accuracy? Luka regularly surpasses 90%.
So does Kova, 80% is still an above average stat. Also, he had way more touches and passes than almost anyone else on the pitch, which means he has more chances to mess up a few. Regardless, I’ve seen players put up 9+ rating matches with way less than 80% pass accuracy.
How about those 12/13 ground duels? 4/4 dribbles? An absolute screamer to bring his team back in the match? I don’t know what more he needs to do to get a 9+ rating and to please his “fans”.
You guys are way too critical of Kova even when he puts up a near perfect performance. Nothing pleases you.
Seemed worthy today of at least a 9 from the naked eye. You quote these rating systems when they show that he’s better than than Jorgonho or Kante on the average but trash it when it doesn’t fit your narrative. Can’t have it both ways.
Chelsea goal of the year, or Prem goal of the year, possibly. Nominated for the Puskas, I highly doubt it. We’ll see
This is a site where we talk about Croatian players’ successes and the national team. Why the hell would I report on when Kova has a bad game, that makes no sense. I never said he’s always better than Kante or Jorginho, but that I believe he is having a better season than both. I don’t think he is better than Kante, but he’s certainly better than Jorgi. It’s visible by the way Jorgi slows down Chelsea’s pace and how the midfield became weak when he stepped onto the pitch.
Would you like me to write an article for when Kova has an average match? Will do next time, just for you.
It’s over the top. Much like your hype for some of our teenage players based off of the tiniest samples.
Keep scrolling that social media for “facts” though
Nobody hypes a player like you dude
At least I back my claims up with statistics and facts. You’ll never see me say things without reason. Aren’t I rightfully hyping him up? Doesn’t he deserve it? You’re giving off vibes of one of those toxic fans who will never be pleased by a player yet probably can’t kick the ball straight.
Keep bringing the “facts” buddy
I will, and they are irrefutable since I state exactly what happens. You’re not arguing with me but with literal statistics. You argue like a child “buddy”.
Good to know you have an irrefutable opinion. I’ll keep that in mind
So actual statistics are considered my opinion? You sound like a conspiracy theorist.
You’re not a scientist dude. Only parts of your opinions are based on facts. Grow up
Are you joking? How is 12/13 ground duels won and 4/4 dribbles an opinion 😭
And 4/8 long balls?
And 6 whole tackles in 90 minutes?
Oh and he drew 2 fouls too!
“Utter dominance.”
And he actually took a single shot because that ball was fucking begging to be hit. If he had time to bring it down or pass it I doubt we see that goal
I’m a fan of Kovas.
I’m just not a fan of your writing.
Do you know how much 6 tackles is? Find me someone who does that on the daily. You obviously know nothing about statistics. You can go take your great knowledge elsewhere if you don’t like my writing. You sound like a little kid. Go write blogs on the internet and be strictly factual, I’m sure everyone will love your writing.
Only kids like yourself live and die with analytics. Watch the game for another 20 years and maybe I’ll read another one of your articles.
90′ played
1 goal
1 shot on target
104 touches
60 accurate passes (80%)
4/8 long balls
4/4 successful dribbles
12/13 ground duels won
1/1 aerial duel won
was fouled 2 times
1 clearance
6 tackles
Facts:
“Utter dominance over the Premier League.”
“Top 3 midfielder in the League.”
Is that so far fetched? I don’t know what your issue is.
Also, I said he deserves to be in the conversation for top 3 midfielder. Not that he is. Learn to read and not nitpick certain words without context.
It’s not completely farfetched but it’s not a fact. Just an opinion from a Croatian superfan
Absolute Chelsea (si.com):
Mateo Kovacic – 9/10
My goodness. His goal to inspire the Chelsea comeback was absolutely out of this world and will undoubtedly go down as one of the finest seen at Stamford Bridge during its illustrious history. Outside of the goal, this was a much improved showing after one of his weakest performances in a Chelsea shirt against Brighton last time out. Getting up to speed at breakneck pace, his influence cannot be understated if the Blues are to launch a charge at the Citizens sat at the top of the table.
He has obviously been reading our posts
How old was luka when he scored his coming out champions league goal vs Man U I believe?
May this be the goal that awakens the sleeping giant
He looked like a pure goal scorer there. Proper mindset as well on the celebration
Croatia a true embarrassment of riches in the midfield
Please have a keeper step up and if it’s rebic or whoever can come in and be just a decent striker for a month in Qatar we may strike lightning again
Krama/budimir/petko anyone
I was speechless when he scored. One of the best technical goals I have ever witnessed. Looks like his “kum Modrić” taught him a thing or two (he’s also starting to use Luka’s signature outside foot pass). A few more goals under his belt, and he will be the complete package.
Croatian power.
Lukaku is a piece of shit.
Toooooooooo … Mateooooooo
Sad Znaš!!
Spremni
All these years we have been waiting for this dude to own his talent.
He STILL has the opportunity to become world class.
No accident that he stepped up for this match.
