Darijo Srna scored the winning goal in a 2-0 win over hated rivals Dynamo Kyiv in the quarterfinal round of the Ukrainian Cup Wednesday night. Srna slammed a bouncing ball into the back of the net after making a fantastic run down the right flank.
Listen to the crowd after he scores; they go absolutely nuts! Now we know why he never left Shakhtar to begin with. Srna’s goal in the 23′ was the winner for Shakhtar, but Fernandinho added another one with only seconds left to really rub it in for Dynamo fans. Just look how the Shakhtar Donetsk attackers play with the ball before Fernandinho insures the win off the post.
Ognjen Vukojević played the full match but couldn’t help Dynamo get on the scoring sheet
THANKS TO ZACH G. FOR THE VIDEO
Ante Rukavina scored two stunning goals in Panathinaikos’ 3-0 win over third division Greek side Eordaikos. Granted the goals were against a club stacked with nobodies, they were still difficult in degree. All Rukavina can now hope for is a call up to starter status for Greek and Europa League games. The coach can’t keep sitting him if he keeps scoring goals like this.
Nikola Kalinić scored his first goal on English soil in the 74′ of Blackburn’s 5-2 Carling Cup win over Championship side Peterborough United. Kalinić converted a meaningless penalty to finally get himself on the board. Hopefully this goal can spark Kalinić to some much needed confidence while playing in the Premiership.
Mate Bilić scored the equalizer for Sporting Gijon in their 1-1 draw against Recreativo Huelva in Spanish Copa del Rey action. Bilić went up for a ball in the goal box with the goalie out of position and headed it home. Good to see Bilić on the board. Let’s see if he can stay consistent. Sporting Gijon have started the season well and are in early position to grab a Europa League spot for next season.
GOAL 1:52 INTO VIDEO
IN OTHER CUP NEWS AROUND EUROPE…
Eduardo played the entire match for the Gunners as Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 4th round of the Carling Cup. Eduardo needs to stay healthy if he wants to prolong his career at top-flight level. I haven’t thrown in the towel on Eduardo, but any more injuries that keep him out three weeks at a time and it’s going to be hard for him to compete for a spot.
Ivan Klasnić played the full 90 for Bolton in their 4-0 defeat to Chelsea. No shame in not scoring a goal against arguably a top four team in Europe- especially after scoring the game winner earlier in the week.
Bayern Munich, Schalke and Hoffenheim all reached the DFB Pokal (German Cup) quarterfinal round with large margin wins over their opponents. Pranjić came in for Bayern with 30 minutes left to play while Rakitić was left on the bench for Schalke. Šimunić was given the day off as Hoffenheim crusied by Koblenz 4-0.
