It’s official!
Croatia’s Luka Modrić will go up against former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah for the FIFA Player of the Year award, formerly named the Ballon d’Or, Goal.com reports.
Modrić has already captured the Champions League title with Real Madrid this season, the Golden Ball – best player at the World Cup – and the UEFA Player of the Year award, to go with his second place finish at the World Cup with the Vatreni. Will he beat out Ronaldo and Salah one more time to be crowned the best player in the world for the past season?
With Modrić making the final three this year, it bounced Barcelona’s Lionel Messi out of contention for the first time in 12 years.
Also on the list, Croatian manager Zlatko Dalić has been nominated for the Coach of the Year award alongside France’s Didier Deschamps and former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.
The award show takes place September 24th in London.

He is gone another traitor.
I didn’t bother reading this article since I saw this all the way through the World Cup but someone please tell me this is fake?!

it a criminal how they fucked our national team..france has serious power to manipulate.
Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch! Let win this first.
sorry part of modric wining is france runs fifa and it like giving a dog a bone to keep us true hrvats quiet as they pull the wool over our teams eyes (cro fans)orechesrated planned fifa imo..make sure croatia ntional soccer team loses ..no matter what!!
lika joey is totally drunk ..when he posted
If Modric wins this award…he becomes the SECOND player in history to win both The Best FIFA Men’s Player and World Cup Golden Ball. The last (and only) time that happened was 24 YEARS ago, when a certain Brazilian named ROMARIO won the awards…..
But wait…it get’s even better….(drum roll please)…if Modric wins this award he becomes the FIRST player in history to win the World Cup Golden Ball, UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, and The BEST FIFA Men’s Player in one season.
A clean sweep and a remarkable feat! Highlighting just how awesome he was in the UCL and WC competitions.
@Anonymous
Modric will win this award, he can’t lose seeing he’s already won the UEFA award and the world cup shouldn’t have been taken into account when choosing the winner for that one.
So, how can he lose the FIFA award where the world cup is taken into account? He can’t, he’s already won!
Well to be fair, i think Cilic cried because he was upset about having the blister during a Grand Slam final. (could be wrong, i dont really follow tennis).
Modric win this…he is the king of global sports for this year!
Razbijac, Iggy sucks off Cilic like he is a Croatian legend…Cilic cried on national TV over a blister…Kostelic…Ivanisevic…Davis cup…water polo gold…Olympic golds…are nothing compared to this. The serbs would shoot Djokovic for this award. This could be our time!
Josip Stanisic to represent Germany?
Can someone explain to me how he can beat out those same 2 players for uefa, then lose out to them for the FIFA award????
Lika Joey is right, The Best FIFA Men’s Player award is the “Holy Grail” of all individual accolades, far surpassing Olympic Golds and Grand Slam Trophies.
And supposedly Luka Modric is the favorite to win it. Doing so would represent a major evolution in Croatian Football. There are two things a footballing a nation can achieve, one is winning a major tournament, the other is producing a player of World Class Calibre that can win the Best Player award.
Apparently Modric was open to the jdea of going back to Tottenham but Levy dudnt want him because he couldnt sell him again if he got him dud to his age in the future.
Go to Zagreb and order yourself some “Štrukli”.
You won’t care for Burek ever again.
I am keeping the ćevapi and burek.
@ iVO
That crew east of us can have the rest.
Will take all rightful Croatian land to boot.
@ Lika Joey
All good.
Actually to beat out a decade of Messi and peder is quite amazing.
When is the last time a player from Germany, Spain or England won it?
Could you imagine the next generation of dečki growing up and feeling that we are world class and have the best players on the planet.
I used to have a subtle fear that we may slip into a Hungarian type obscurity.. talking about Prosinečki like he was Puskas.
Luka Modrić and this run was the breakthrough we have been talking about since this site came into existence.
Bust to Ballon d’Or!
hr
Soul champ, my point was the Serbs…Muslims etc can’t match this achievement if it happens. 25 grand slam titles…20 Olympic gold medals can’t top this! I get what your saying soul champ and respect bro.
Please leave Balkan for the Serbs, Albanians, Greeks,
And Mujos. We are not Balkan.
Be your Self and let the world catch up to you!!
@ Lika
I’ll keep the ćevapi and burek but drop the rest of the Balkan identity.
@ Toronto
Well said.
His positive impact on the teams he plays for is big time.
Funny how Bale and Benzema are banging in goals at Real Madrid and Mandžukić for Juventus.
Messi is the man but I am sorry when Diego Maradona drags Argentina to a World Cup victory and you get embarrassed in Russia then you simply can’t be walking home with individual awards.
Toronto Croatia, I agree 100% this is a Fifa award the world cup is a huge deciding factor. Luka was incredible in the world cup. UEFA is a club award…Ronaldo doesn’t deserve it this time around. Playmakers are so often overlooked for goal scorers. This could be the biggest single achievement for an athlete from the Balkans ever…gold medals…tennis trophies are all second to this!
Well if Modric doesn’t win it then its bullshit.
Mo Salah …good player but thanks for coming out.
Ronaldo had his time ..his attitude towards Modric winning UEFA player of the year should sour any chance of him winning the Ballon d’Or again.
Modric deserves it and should win it hands down.
