In a rematch of last year’s Champions League Final, Real Madrid travelled to Anfield to face Liverpool in their Champions League Round of 16 1st leg Tuesday night. In one of the most memorable first legs in recent knockout round history, Liverpool went up 2-0 inside 15 minutes. However, Real Madrid stayed as cool as the other side of the pillow to score five unanswered goals to embarrass Liverpool 5-2 on home turf.
Modrić got the start and played 87 minutes in the match. He assisted on Militao’s game-winning header in the 47th minute with an absolute bullet free kick from just outside the box. Only Militao could have gotten to it as the the play looked to have been scripted before Modrić sent the ball on its way.
In the 67th minute, Modrić showed his 20 year-old legs as he stole the ball in his own half and started a 70-yard counter attack by bringing the ball up field at full pace before dishing it to Vini for the assist to Benzema. Modrić with the hockey assist!
Lukita received a 9/10 grade from Goal.com as he “Comes alive in these games. Absolutely masterful. What’s in those legs?”
Modrić looked a bit tired and stale after the World Cup for Real Madrid. However, this performance tonight negates all of that. Rumors of Modrić signing one more 1-year deal at Real Madrid are currently being whispered in the Spanish capital.
