The Croatians at Southampton have been having a disastrous 2023 in England…and it only got worse Wednesday night in the FA Cup 5th Round. It was supposed to be an easy day at the office as Premiership club Southampton hosted 4th division side Grimsby Town. A spot in the FA Cup quarterfinal round was on the line and Southampton expected to be there, even with their Premier League hopes dangling by a thread; currently sitting in last place.
Both Mislav Oršić and Duje Ćaleta-Car got the start for the Saints in what was supposed to be a 2-goal win. However, Grimsby Town went up 2-0 through two penalty kicks within the first 50 minutes of the match. But check out the highlight below. In one of the most penalty kicks ever awarded, DCC appeared to gently slap a Grimsby player just seconds after his goalie collected the ball in the box. I don’t remember ever seeing a penalty given while the ball was not in play. However, that’s the kind off season DCC is having at Southampton. He was sent off in the Carling up semifinal against Newcastle a few weeks back after picking up two yellows.
However, DCC did atone for his dumb aggression in the box as he scored a cheeky tap-in from a high, looping corner in the box. He was absolutely unguarded in with the goalie frozen. Why didn’t he head the ball though?
Oršić received the start and played 59 minutes in the match. The guy went from scoring goals against Spurs, Chelsea, West Ham (and Morocco in the World Cup) to not being able to score against a 4th Division English side. Just a shame.
With Southampton slated to be relegated in three months time, Oršić’s move to England will more than likely be considered a ‘katastrofa’. The Grimsby game would have been the ideal time to score his first goal for the club, but it wasn’t meant to be. Southampton is in trouble and will very soon become a sinking ship that can’t be repaired. Oršić and DCC would then have to make moves this summer instead of having another season in the English top flight.
Maminjo, you left out Igor Bisčan. Had a descent career for Liverpool.
He’s actually got James Bond legend status with a lot of Liverpool fans ha ha. Some good stories posted about him online.
But in terms of his play, yea, they kept playing him out of position…until they decided to play him in his natural role, and the guy killed it during that amazing Champions League run. His EPL career could have been a lot better if he was allowed to play his game.
But I barely consider him a National Team player. He played a few games, got in a fight with Baric, and that was it.
I wouldn’t put too much stock into this game, as it was likely fixed.
10 to 1 payout for a Grimsby win, and the ref blew his load twice to give Grimsby two ridiculous PKs.
There was a good payout even for a draw, especially with a goal. A win was even better.
I wonder what Ante Šapina is up to these days.
When’s Dalic going to release the squad for the March fixtures? We got two matches at the end of the month. Utilize every young player you can. All of our veterans are retiring for a reason. I’m also puzzled by Dalic boycotting the awards. FIFA had to showcase a player from every team to make it even. Although I do disagree, that’s the way it’s designed. I personally think Livakovic had a better tournament than Courtois. Gvardiol had an expectational tournament besides the semi final match. KDB, Cancelo, and maybe one other didn’t belong. I see where he’s coming from but be humble and swallow your pride. Participate in the awards. In other news, did anyone see the Welsh team complain that they will feel “unsafe” playing in Split. Somehow it’s not suitable for them. Stfu and play us you bums. Maybe you should focus on playing better in the qualifiers after witnessing a disastrous World Cup.
Wales is cooked (now that Bale retired) and they won’t qualify for another tournament for many years.
They know the only way they get in, is if they can beat out Turkey for second place and whichever of those two teams can take points off us will be the winner of second place.
My guess is Wales is setting things up for a ‘racist chant’ or ‘fan violence’ card. Wales puts this all out there in the media that they do not feel safe, and try to walk off the field when the Splicani start chanting ‘U boj’ or lighting flares.
Maybe get some sort of suspended result in their favor. Who knows.
I think someone on here, before the World Cup, mentioned that the teams are supposed be selected two weeks or so prior to the tournament. So that being said, I would assume somewhere around March 9th, ish. If coaches do not send the selections by that time then they would need to do so close to that date I think.
I don’t think personally Croatians prosper in a league like the English and it’s been prevalent for several years. I don’t know why but somehow we succeeded in every league other than this one. Kova, Perisic, Orsic and CC aren’t having good years.
I agree, ven though I thought they might have some success earlier on it is turning out to be the opposite. We do still have to count that Kova won a Champions League with Chelsea so it’s not all for nothing. But the Premier League has not been favourable to Croatians it seems.
Not sure if it is the style of play or what it is.
It’s kind of a mixed bag.
Balaban, Kalinic, Silvio Maric, and Filip Benkovic were busts (but Benkovic can’t seem to play anywhere). Krama and Vlasic were simply not given a chance at all. Same with Orsic right now.
Modric, Kovacic, Perisic, Kranjcar, Prosinecki, Klasnic, Jelavic, Corluka, Asanovic, Stimac, Boksic, Zivkovic, Suker, Stanic all did pretty well (despite many of them just being average players to begin with, and some of them playing there during the tail ends of their careers).
Lovren did well at Saints, and was mixed at Liverpool…but that’s not an EPL issue. He’s like that everywhere. Dudu was good…until he broke his ankle.
Seems like all the good players did well, and the average players were either decent role players or just didn’t do well.
I just don’t like the EPL because they have no urgency to play you, even if they drop crazy money on you. No plan for your development at all. Disaster move for young players trying to take that next step (hence why Krama and Vlasic got fuct over there).

Well said. This is the core of the problem with the EPL and our players. Look at what Chelsea’s is doing right now. They’re splashing money all around and buying player with absolutely no plan.
Please, no more Croatians in the prem
I agree jo
Stay the fuck away
This ref was absolutely shocking, I don’t know what the first penalty was and the second one was a disgrace of a penalty regardless of the reaction from Caleta-Car.
Yeh I dont know either. I watched the game. Absolutely baffling!
DCC and Orsic can’t be having a good time. Woulda been better staying put at Marseille and DZ.
