#27 Borna Ćorić upset #4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in an imposible four-and-a- half hour 5-setter at the US Open in New York late Friday night/Saturday morning. Ćorić was down two sets to one when he found himself dead in the water in the fourth set, trailing 5-1. Tsitsipas only needed one more measly game to wrap up the match and head home. Instead, Ćorić rattled off six straight games while facing SIX match points to win the set 7-5. He would eventually win the fifth and final set in a tiebreaker. It was one of the most amazing tennis comebacks you will ever see — against a really good top-10 player as well. Ćorić just wouldn’t go away.
The Zagreb-born Ćorić will now faced unseeded Australian Jordan Thompson in the 4th Round with a ticket to the quarterfinals on the line.
Petra Martić is absolutely cruising at the US Open this year. The 29 year-old Spličanka has only dropped one set in her first three matches and will now play #23 Kazakh Yulia Putintseva in the 4th Round Sunday. On Friday afternoon, Martić defeated Russian Varvara Gracheva in straight sets to clinch a berth in the Sweet 16. #18 Donna Vekić will take on Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova Saturday in the 3rd Round.
#31 Marin Čilić will face #2 Dominic Thiem in the 3rd Round on Saturday and will be a huge underdog as he has already played nine sets in two matches at the US Open. We will see what the former US Open champion can do, but the rule of thumb at Grand Slams is to keep your court time down in the early rounds.
