Rijeka played out an impressive 1-1 draw in Austria Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round affair with Red Bull Salzburg. Rijeka were given a tough draw but drew blood first when Mario Gavranović scored a beautiful header in the 30th minute; redirecting a sharp cross from the sideline to beat Alexander Walke just inside the far post. However, Red Bull would equalize three minutes after the break when they caught Rijeka on a speedy fast break to counter for the goal. The match would end 1-1.
The two teams will play again in Croatia next week during the return leg with Rijeka knowing that a victory or clean sheet will put them two matches away from the promised land: the Champions League group stage.
