SkySports.com has reported that 26-year old Wolfsburg center-back Marco Russ has applied for Croatian citizenship and has intentions to play for Slaven Bilić’ Croatia squad in this summer’s Euro 2012; should the paperwork go through. Russ is eligible for Croatian papers through his wife, Janina, who is only half Croatian. Russ is German-born and started his Bundesliga career in 2004 with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 13 goals in 163 appearances. The 6′ 3″ Russ was bought by Wolfsburg in 2011.
“He said that he has been hanging out with Croatians all of his life and that he and they understand each other well,” wife Janina said.
We can only pray that Slaven Bilić does not let this guy play for Croatia. What a shame that would be. Croatia might be light in defense, but there is no reason in the world that we should be letting Germans put on the checkers because they married a half-Croatian.
Dear Slaven Bilić,
Do the right thing. Just say NO.
