Phoenix Suns point guard and future NBA Hall of Famer Steve Nash caught up with CSR in the tunnels of Staples Center after a 108-99 win over the Clippers on March 20th, 2011. Nash talked about the Croatian coastline, the legacy of Dražen Petrović and Luka Modrić’s impact on the Tottenham Hotspur. Nash is a huge Spurs supporter as both his parents are from North London. He is also a minority owner for the MLS expansion Vancouver Whitecaps.
Nash didn’t have time to sit down with CSR, but he was kind enough to answer a few questions as he walked to the team bus- all while sippin’ on an ice cold Miller Lite.
@ Tom,
Poutine, fries with gravy, whatever you wanna call it, was DELICIOUS!!! My question to you…what else could JP have offered us in the Canadian cuisine department that night?…we were more thirsty than hungry and this was the best plate of bar food I've ever had…
Haven't heard the word Quebec since the Nordiques were in town.
@ JP,
You forget to mention that it was served by the Edmonton trucker girl too. She was cute 🙂 Any luck?
I love Barbosa
@Tom in WPG
Ante had poutine on his mind, saw the poutine on the menu and went straight for it 🙂
It was actually a bad introduction for another reason… it was unlike poutine that he'll ever have again… made with truffle oil!
Designer poutine out here on the left coast 🙂
It was damn tasty though!
Poutine is very much a Quebecois thing. Tasty, yes. But not exactly high end cuisine. JP, surely you could have introduced the guys to something better than that?! lol
hey anonymous what else do you call a teammate who sleeps with your wife? and what else do you call wife who sleeps with your teammate?
@anonymous,
wow, you really dont give up do you. I am a "blog administrator" along with Ante Kvartuc.
We both agreed that we frown on racist, religious, and political comments. This is not a place for that. As far as "whore" and "nigga" we frown on this as well. However, a word like that here and there we will let slide.
your comment about Malcom X and Muhammad Ali have nothing to do with anything on this site.
We welcome you if you would like to talk about soccer, croatian soccer, and croatian sports.
We are not agreeing or disagreeing with your comments, we are just saying that they dont belong here. Hopefully, you understand this.
Who is the blog administrator? "nigga" and "whore" are permissible, but saying that Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and the million man march were/are against miscegenation is not? What's going on here, blacks are allowed to be against race mixing, but if whites are it's considered "racist?"
The race comments are getting very annoying and are quite immature, but it was an interesting interview. If you guys interview someone like the Bogut interview (an international player, you'll probably get more info.
@anonymous,
I cant believe I am even replying to you.
"There are many many streets in the U.S. named after Malcolm X, who was against race-mixing"
good take. Your comment is irrelevant to this post. We are not here to talk about race or race-mixing. For that go to racemixing.com
I wouldn't say the cro media dropped the ball. Actually, the cro media did have some comments from her a few years after the accident. It was one of the dailies. This was before the internet explosion so there is no online record of it. She has been asked by multiple media outlets for interviews, but she refuses. I would too, there is nothing to gain by talking about the accident.
@ziva
Interesting. I hope for Bierhoff's sake, he doesn't let her do the driving when they go for groceries.
Had it been the British media, the paparazzi would have chased her down. The Croatian media dropped the ball on that one. We never got to hear from her publicly about what happened that day.
"Franjo Tudjman said…
1) Regarding the internet rumors about Nash, they appear to be just that….internet rumors. The last story is that the kid is as white as everyone here:"
But is the reason for the divorce because his ex wife is a race traiting whore?
@Franjo….Pertovic's girlfriend who was driving the car that day is now married to Oliver Bierhooff. She is a professional jersey chaser.
Regarding the Nash rumors….who knows?
Lebron's mon and Delonte West…..It as going on earlier but LeBron never found out until the Boston series. The team went out after winning game 3 of that series with ease. LeBron came back to the hotel and he went to check on his mom. When he knocked on her door he saw West in the room and was able to put things together.
@Dukic
I believe the LeBron James/Delonte West rumor much more than the Nash one.
LeBron was totally out of it in two of those playoff games and distracted. I could tell something was wrong while watching the game.
1) Regarding the internet rumors about Nash, they appear to be just that….internet rumors. The last story is that the kid is as white as everyone here:
http://www.terezowens.com/steve-nash-black-baby-revealed-its-white-all-right/
2) Regarding Petrovic, one thing I've found interesting is that no one has done an interview with the driver of Petrovic's car (at least, not to the best of my knowledge).
I'm not into conspiracy theories that were suggested at the time (and not suggesting CSR do one) as it seems he would have survived with a seat belt, but I've always found that part of the accident a bit of a mystery.
3) I'm glad that Ante picked up my typo earlier as I obvously meant Croatian "players" on Vancouver and not Croatian teams 🙂
ante you can legally block that stuff i think just how lebrons mom was doing it delonte west that wasnt all over the tv.
@ ziva,
Probably not the best way to build rapport with a future NBA Hall of Famer. We'll get Nash again. Not here to throw anybody under the bus. He was a good sport to even 'walk and talk' with us. He was out of it after the game and just wanted to chill and have a beer.
@ DinamoDennis,
CSR visited Vancouver for New Year's and met up with JP. He took us to an upscale bar/restaurant where he insisted on us trying poutine. We did and we liked it. Thought it was a Canadian delicacy. I mean, what other cultural culinary dish does Canada have? Seriously?
@ JP,
Special? Did you booby trap my poutine when I went to the washroom? 🙂 YOU MADE IT SAME LIKE POUTINE WAS GOD'S GREAT GIFT TO CANADA!!!! It's all good. You win Round 1. Fool me once… 🙂
@Tudjman,
So little time with Nash. A total of 3 minutes….we'll get him again next season and hopefully talk more soccer in a sit-down. Good idea….

Nash is a philanthropist, a guy's guy and a future NBA legend. If the Barbosa rumor from ziva is true, that means all of the writers in the NBA knew about it, but never reported on it. That's how much credibility and respect Nash receives. Imagine if this was Kobe, Bonds, Lebron, Ray Lewis…..the media would ROAST them…a teammate impregnates your wife….OUCH!
they dont know if its barbosa or j rich. they just know its a nigga. kurveeeee.
@Ziva
or both names… keep Croatian Sports Report for non-soccer stuff, and Croatian Soccer Report for futbol stuff… either way it's CSR 🙂
Win-Win 🙂
@ Denis……that is the story I have heard, so who knows how much of it is true. The dots somehow connect is a strange way. Barbosa is from Brazil, so is Nash's wife/ex-wife, Suns traded Barbosa for nothing, strange timing for a seperation….
Have you guys ever considered changing the name of the website to Croatian Sports Report. You might have an easier time getting credentials with that name. I am sure the Lakers/Clippers do a double take when they see a request from Croatian Soccer Report
@Ziva,
Wow, thats crazy. They got rid of Barbosa for nothing. Starting to all make sense now.
@Franjo,
Good question. I enjoyed writing up a pre-interview post asking CSR nation for questions for an upcoming interview. However, for the most part, we dont know who we will get.
check that….I saw I had a typoo…Barbosa is the father to the kid that Nash's wife gave birth to a few months ago.
@ Denis……the rumor I heard is that Barbosa father is the biological father. That is the reason he was traded from the Suns in the offseason. Nash and his wife both agreed they would divorce once the pregnancy was over.
I just noticed that Nash looks a bit like Modric with that haircut.
Ante, my only "criticism" of the interview would be not asking him if Vancouver looked into signing any Croatian teams for their inaugural season. I know he's "just" a part-owner and he's not the GM, but it still might have been worth asking.
A dificult interview to do on the run like that. Unfortunately, I was at Indian Wells that weekend for the tennis tournament.
Excellent job under the circumstances!
@Ziva,
The you have any details behind the divorce? I was shocked when I read that on yahoo sports. This was announced a day after the birth of his son.
What about Barbosa?
@JP,
Last year, I made the trip to Phoenix with a couple Lakers fans for game 3 of the playoffs. A couple hours after the game, Nash, his wife, and about 6 or so Phoenix suns(medical staff, media guys, etc etc) went for sushi. Us three lakers fans were outside the restaurant in lakers gear. Steve looked at us and said "whats up guys." Class act guy, like most Canucks.
Ps. the poutine that we had was very special, and not really a West Coast/Vancouver thing! Good try though 🙂
You also could've asked him about his favourite NHL team (the Canucks), Nash's sister is married to one of the Cancuks players (Malhotra) who just suffered and pretty severe eye injury…
Awesome work boys, Nash is awesome!
I agree with Ziva, he totally opened up when Tottenham was mentioned, Stevie loves nogomet more than basketball… If I remember correctly his old man played with Tottenham. I was at the MLS opener for the Whitecaps (which was awesome!!). Nash was there too as part owner.
I wasn't aware about his divorce…
He opended up when asked about Spurs, but was spewing crap out of his ass about Croatia.
You know what would have made that interview great or a disaster (depending on how you look at it)….ask him about Leandro Barbosa and nash's wife, well ex-wife now, and the kid she gave birth to a few months ago. Nash filed for divorce one day after the birth.
Whats up with the poutine question ? Pretty chessy ….
no pun intended.
I forget that Modric needs to be responsible for everyones performances…
I think this last year has been an experiment of how to use him with others…the fact is we have seen Modric, Rakitic, and Kranjcar can't all play together. So now its which 1 or 2 of them can we fit into the lineup with him.
You can't point the finger at one player when the ENTIRE team has not been pulling their weight…
wake me up when Modric actually steps up for the NT
