It has been a long time. A very long time. Seven years to be exact, since NK Osijek has defeated GNK Dinamo Zagreb. But on the returning match from the winter break, a match that was scheduled for December but was rescheduled to today due to snow, Osijek has done something that they last did in November of 2005.
After a two-month break, the HNL has returned. The match started on time, but heavy snow blanketed the frozen field. That did not stop some 2,000 dedicated fans to support their team.
It didn’t take long for the fans to get excited. Only 14 minutes into the match, Antonio Peroševič sent in a corner kick that was met by the head of Branko Vrgoč. Vrgoč’s first attempt was saved by Ivan Kelava, but Vrgoč beat the Dinamo defense to the rebound and sent it in for the opening goal.
Dinamo dominated in possession, holding over 60 percent of it through the first half, but Osijek’s notoriously stingy defense kept their scoring chances scarce.
Dinamo’s first attempt on goal did not come until the 22nd minute when Sammir put a low shot on frame, but was easily handled by keeper Zvonimir Mikulić.
Osijek continued to flex their defensive muscles in the second half. They played a tough line that did not allow the visitors to enter the penalty area and kept a minimum of eight players behind the ball at all time.
The Modri’s best opportunity for a goal came in the 62nd minute when Fatos Beqiraj sent in a cross to Ivan Krstanović who laid out a big side-volleyed shot that was seemed destined for the back of the net, but Mikulić made a full extension save, and kept Dinamo scoreless.
Dinamo was however finally able to find themselves on the score sheet in the 80th minute of play. A loose ball sent in from a corner kick was cleaned up by Arijan Ademi, who tapped it in with a sliding kick.
The 1-1 score did not last long. A quick counter attack from Osijek found Dinamo’s defense in disarray. A lofted cross from the left side drew Kelava off his line, but Domagoj Pušić beat him to the ball and tapped in the game winner in the 83rd minute.
“Of course I did not expect defeat, but that’s football,” Ademi said after the match. “We were better, we dominated the entire match, but Osijek defended well. Football is a game of goals, and they got one more than us and that’s the end of the story. This is just one game and we need to move on. Now we turn to the next match against Rijeka.”
There were several obvious factors that could be attributed to Dinamo’s loss.
The reigning Croatian champions had just lost Domagoj Vida, an integral part of the defense and a consistently solid player for the club. Vida was sold to Dynamo Kiev during the winter transfer period. This left a noticeable void in the back line.
A new addition to the back line was introduced on Sunday. 17-year-old Croatian U-19 international Tin Jedvaj made his debut for the Modri. The young center back was not at fault for either of the goals, but had little to show for in his debut other than several blocked shots.
This was also the first league match played without the talented Mateo Kovačić. Kovačić was sold to Italian giants Inter Milan this month for a fee reported to be an upwards of 11 million euros.
Dinamo was not the only club to lose valuable players. Osijek saw the sale of their goalkeeper Ivan Vargić and midfielder Vedran Jugović this winter. Both players were sold to HNK Rijeka for an estimated fee of 800,000 euros. It is no secret that the Osijek club are struggling financially, and were in need of some quick cash.
Osijek currently sit in seventh place behind RNK Split and face HNK Cibalia in week 20. Dinamo are approaching their toughest opponents in the schedule in the coming weeks. They face HNK Rijeka in week 20, and then have to prepare for a trip to Poljud to face Hajduk, and then receive a visit from the tough Slaven Belupo to close out the season. Dinamo are currently eight points clear of second place, but have much to think about after this loss.
NK Osijek: Mikulić – Ibriks, Vrgoč, Smoje, Lešković – Pušić, Kurtović, Mišić, Kvržić (od 90. Leko) – Pongračić, Perošević (od 90. Mandić)

Alright, here is the explination behind the split schedule – “Natjecanje se odvija po TROKRUŽNOM bod sustavu u dva dijela.

Ah, thank you!!! That’s CroatianSports.com teamwork right there. Good catch. I wonder why they have the season split like that. Did I miss a format change this year? Do they start over or something on March 9?
Forgot to sign name in above post.
They are playing 33 games this season. I got this from
http://www.prva-hnl.hr After week 22 the schedule will be this:
23 24 25 26 27 28
1 – 12 11 – 1 1 – 10 9 – 1 1 – 8 7 – 1
2 – 11 10 – 2 2 – 9 8 – 2 2 – 7 6 – 2
3 – 10 9 – 3 3 – 8 7 – 3 3 – 6 5 – 3
4 – 9 8 – 4 4 – 7 6 – 4 4 – 5 4 – 12
5 – 8 7 – 5 5 – 6 5 – 12 11 – 9 8 – 11
6 – 7 6 – 12 12 – 11 10 – 11 12 – 10 9 – 10
29. 30. 31. 32. 33.
1 – 6 5 – 1 1 – 4 3 – 1 1 – 2
2 – 5 4 – 2 2 – 3 2 – 12 11 – 3
3 – 4 3 – 12 11 – 5 4 – 11 10 – 4
11 – 7 6 – 11 10 – 6 5 – 10 9 – 5
10 – 8 7 – 10 9 – 7 6 – 9 8 – 6
12 – 9 8 – 9 12 – 8 7 – 8 12 – 7
I’d be surprised if it cut their salary by 25%, but that seems like they’re missing a lot of games. Like I said, the original plan was for each team to play the other teams three times. It looks as if it is each team will play every other team twice, making it a 24 round schedule. As of now, it looks as if there are three games left. I need to confirm that. If you see anything, post it on here.
Yes it just seemed odd to me cuz that would mean 8 games less would be roughly 25% of the season. From a players perspective that would mean 25% less of the players salary? Also it would not benefit the players mostly from dinamo, hajduk who are on the national team cuz they would be out of form for the match vs Serbia,
There are four less teams this season than last season, so that may have something to do with it but the original format of the season did call for 33 rounds of play and end on May 26. The schedule on the league site (as well as various team’s sites) stops at round 22 and ends on March 2, but leaves enough space for 30 rounds. So it looks like there will be 22 rounds of play, baring the league itself has any idea how many they are playing.
Either way, I will continue to report on the league for as long as they play. Check back for updates.

You wrote “Dinamo are approaching their toughest opponents in the schedule in the coming weeks. They face HNK Rijeka in week 20, and then have to prepare for a trip to Poljud to face Hajduk, and then receive a visit from the tough Slaven Belupo to close out the season ”
Does that mean the hnl is over after 22 weeks? I thought they play 30+ games a season? Last season was a 30 game schedule.
I’d like to see a pimped pope mobile http://qkme.me/3syxyh
Apparently a black Pope would have to hand over his pope-mobile to “Pimp My Ride”
A French-Canadian dude is the 2nd favourite according to some English betting site. Let’s go Frenchie!
That African guy sounds pretty qualified. Has done a LOT for his region. I’m pulling for the first American pope, though. Not that it even matters.
@Colin.. oh my GOD (get it), that is just embarassing..
why dont u want a black pope ? What would be so wrong with that ?
TBH i dont care about their skin colour it’d be nice if they were a bit progressive but i know that’s not going to happen in my lifetime
@cOLIN
A BLACK POPE WOULD CAUSE ANOTHER SCIZUM YO!!
If we get a black pope, I’m totally blasting this jam all day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di9_zOaEneo
@IGGY
If the next pope is an affirmative action apointment I will refuse to acknowledge him. Bad Enough with Obama now a black pope.
I was actually surprised to hear Ratzinger was 85.. i thought he was 185 by looking at him
I was hoping the last pope would be black and not Ratzinger.. it’d be nice if it wasn’t someone already on their deathbed for a change although that is probably asking too much
Doubt it Elvis but I did see a link on drudge that there will be a push to make the next pope black. God help us if that rumor is true.
Halilovic is training for Jihad…..BTW have you mooks seen the pope is stepping down. Any Croats up for promotion?
Great job, Colin!
I still think Dinamo will win the League but they sell way too many players to build a decent team for next season. Badelj, Kovacic and Vida left during the season, when will Sammir and Halilovic go? It looks like only the old and average players stay at Zagreb.
I’m pretty excited to see Lee Addy play. Heard good things. Jedvaj will be fine. I’m sure he’ll be playing back on the youth sides. He’s young and will be back up soon. Addy will be here to help for the winter.
I’m still holding my original league prediction; Dinamo will win the league, but by single digits. They have one of the weaker squads in recent years IMO.
Good Job Osijek !
Dinamo have signed Ghanaian interational Lee Addy on loan (he is a defender), so looks like Jedvaj will get less playing time, though apparently he had a good winter camp for Dinamo
Dinamo will still win the title, but it won’t be smooth with this squad
He’s injured. Should be ok by next week.
where is The GOD of Halilovic ?
