Real Madrid shocked Liverpool with a 3-1 defeat over the Merseyside club Tuesday night in the Champions League quarterfinal first leg. Luka Modrić played a solid 90 minutes and assisted on the third Madrid goal but it was the Toni Kroos show on the day as he put together a dazzling performance which led to the opening goal. ManagingMadrid.com gave Modrić an 8.5/10 on the night: “What a player Modrić is. Like Kroos tonight, once again showed why he’s one of the top midfielders in the world. Put in more of a defensive shift than others did which was a nice bonus especially as Liverpool pushed for a second goal. Assisted Vini’s second goal and finished with one key pass and three tackles.”
If Modrić and Real Madrid finish off Liverpool next week and Kovačić’s Chelsea get past Porto – as they should – the two Croatian teammates will meet in the Champions League semifinals. We are close, folks! We’re close to having another chance at making it NINE STRAIGHT YEARS a Croatian lifts the CL trophy. Still some work to do but we’re definitely a lot closer now than we were before the Liverpool match kicked off.
Modrić Assist
Suba played injured cost us in the final I think he got hurt when Vida almost dropped him on his head in one of the post game celebrations.
Playing injured is a conspiracy theory? lol
Croatians LOVE conspiracy theories
Can’t see Subasic throwing the game. The same type of comments were made against Boban when we lost to France in the semi final in 1998.
..
My belief is that Suba was carrying an injury, the coaching staff knew, but were unwilling to throw in Kalinic for such a momentous game. Staff would have seen Subasic in training and would have known about his lack of mobility
Yea, one thing to notice…
.
Subasic was trying to guess where the shot would go a little prematurely (likely because he was injured).
.
He guessed right on Tripper’s free kick, yet still didn’t even come close to saving it.
It wasn’t as great of a free kick as the announcers made you think. It wasn’t top corner at all.
Suba’s legs were just shot, and he had no lift.
A healthy keeper would have saved that shot, had they guess right, but Suba was barely able to lunge for it.
.
The last two France goals (especially the first one) were not strong attempts on goal. They were both bouncing shots, that were within arm’s reach of him. He was kind of going the other way at first, but he could have recovered on both of them. He just didn’t have enough bend in his legs to be able to lunge last minute. He’s tall enough that even a quick lunge, plus his arm length, would have stopped either goal.
.
His hamstring was just done, and that’s that. He was injured for months after the World Cup too. Didn’t play a professional match for a very long time after.
I think Luka will definitely be considered for the Ballon D’Or. He was not his best yesterday, but still had some terrific moments and set up and created that goal out of nothing. He must be tired and I hope he is not too tired when the Euros start.
Subasic was like Boban in 98, playing injured and costing us the final.
“Shocked?”
•
Real beating Liverpool 3-1 ain’t exactly a shock.
Test
Big win by Madrid
Luka with a nice assist on the third goal
Luka lining up a potential league, champions league and potential deep run for us
This would have to put him in the balon dor talks again
Wouldn’t that be something else
Would finally put his nay sayers to rest as I’m sure there are still some
Regardless lots to do for Real but the can definitely take it
No it was subas vlach heritage that held him back
Couldn’t bring himself to let croatia lift the trophy
Or maybe Prince Albert paid him off handsomely
Anyone have a stream for the game?
Danke
Serb Subasic conspiracy theory? 😉
Nah.
I think it was his Serbian side that held him back. 😉
.
Just kidding.
His hamstring was shot.
He was injured and should not have been playing in the final.
.
Playing in a final is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and he put himself ahead of the team’s best interest.
It was Dalić’s fault for letting Suba make the call, when I’m sure in practice they could see that he could barely lunge for a ball.
.
He was visibly injured in the England game too.
England had 2 shots on target and France had 6 shots on target… and almost all of them went in. He was injured and barely moved for any shot toward goal.
.
The reason why we weren’t destroyer in any of these matches was of how much we dominated our opponents.
We completely out possessed and out shot every single team we played.
With an healthy keeper, we would have probably clean sheeted every game.
I will go to my grave saying subasic threw the final.
Look very closely at all the goals and his reaction time or LACK OF.
Even the PK was actually lousy by greasy man.
Mandzukic own goal was in the 5 yard box yet Subasic just stood there instead of attacking the ball.
Don’t get me started on pogba and mbape’s goals.
He was playing for Monaco In France you don’t think someone set him up for life?
He was stuck in quick sand the entire game, even injured he should have at least TRIED!
Nah, it was four main dudes (Modric, Rakitic, Mandzo and Perisic).
.
Not one of them did more than the other. They were equally good, but people like refugee stories and star players…so Modric got all the credit.
.
Vrsaljko, Rebic, and Brozovic were the super role players…but were not on par with what those four did.
.
Subasic was great for the Denmark penalties, but was largely bad throughout the tournament.
He just came up clutch at the right moment, in one of those ‘Turkey 2008’ or ‘Portugal 2016’ style trap games, where everything seems to go wrong for the good guys.
I personally thought it was a mixture of subasic Perisic and Mandzo that took croatia to the final
That’s my view
Sorry, finals
Luka Modric is an absolute gentleman, i’ve been watching him since the early 2000s , his football speaks for itself, thanks to him Croatia made the 2018 world cup semi finals. But formost i respect him as a great, humble human being.
Can’t wait for when you come to my parents homeland Malta in Nov, Modric and co, welcome.
